I liked it so much I'm considering making a return trip, even though I'm only in Montreal for a long weekend. I ordered a Tatin sweet crepe. The crepe dough was soft, pleasantly sweet, and has the perfect texture and lightness. For fillings, Spanel cooked the apples very nicely. Meanwhile, the Ice cream paired well with everything and offered a contrast in textures and temperatures. Finally, I adored the salted butter caramel sauce! Some of the best crepes I've had! Prices were very reasonable, and portions are humongous. They Chococao crepe was delicious--piled high with homemade whipped cream and stuffed with a good amount of strawberries and nutella. My partner got the Kinder Bueno crepe, which was two sticks of Bueno wrapped with crispy crepes and dunked into a bowl of whipped cream, drizzled with salted caramel. Just pure decadence. Was way too sweet for even me but the portion is smaller so that might be alright if you're craving something like that! The savoury crepes are good as well, certainly not dainty little savoury affairs. They add cheese, either emmental or a hard cheddar, to their savoury crepes which, when melted, provide such richness and flavour. They also provide some maple syrup on the side which I imagine pairs well with most of them as well. So delicious and will definitely be back again if I'm in town. This place was a delightful surprise. It was one of the few places open between Xmas/ NYE in this area, after a visit to Arsenal. How fantastic to chance upon a creperie! Savory and sweet, with a lovely variety. I had one with eggs, spinach, avocado and it was awesome. So we got some coffee 2 stores down and we were looking at other nearby options. Walked in on a cloudy morning after missing the bus and trekking 20 minutes from my hotel. It was totally worth the walk!! The cappuccino and Mike End crepe (eggs, mushroom, spinach, aged cheddar) were amazing! Delicious and not overly salty or oily. Each dish were below average. Some dish were overly salty, and some were overly sweet. Despite the great service; food made us feel sick. Spanel has the second best crêpes I've tried in town (the first is Breizh Café in the Plateau) and I'm extremely happy to live less than five minutes walk from this excellent brunch spot. The service is fantastic -- one of the chefs, from Brittany (or Bretagne, home of the best crêpes in the world) made me feel so welcome when I first moved here. On especially busy days, like Saturday mornings, it can be a bit hectic and there are usually quite a few (sometimes loud) children, so I recommend a different time if you prefer a quieter spot. The food itself is wonderful, ranging from deliciously savoury swiss cheese and ham crêpes for any time of day, to salted caramel, ice cream, and caramelized apple crêpes for an extremely decadent treat. There is maple syrup on the table, and I'm sure Canadians don't need me to tell them that you should try it on everything. Especially the savoury crêpes. The drink selection is great (I always appreciate a good, robust tea menu) and coffee refills come quite frequently. Bottom line: food sounded good, but the combination of terribly slow service and frustrated server lead us to canceling our orders and leaving. Gluten line: they had plenty of great brunch options we were sad we never got to try. Long story: my wife being celiac, I was excited to find a place that served brunch type foods during our trip in Montreal. When we arrived they were quick to seat us and we sat in the back inside area as the outdoor back area was under the potent sun. With our broken french we ordered from our server who was noticeably in a bad mood and appeared frustrated with the amount of people as she was the only one there other than the hostess. We got our drinks after 20 minutes and asking or them once more. 20 minutes after that we noticed another party getting served their food and us not having been approached at all seemed strange, so we tried asking. Our server, still apparently very frustrated, brushed our questions aside and just said "yes yes, food soon." 20 minutes later, again not having been approached at all or even having our water refilled or asked for another drink, we left. Not sure why they seemed so surprised and we never even got an explanation or apology for the food. Very disappointing experience but the local looked nice, menu comprehensive, and drink was good. Might benefit from hiring another server and/or cook for weekends. read more

I knew I didn't want a sweet crepe, and I ended up ordering the Village - eggs, cheddar cheese, sausage and caramelized onions - thinking those ingredients would have good flavor. It didn't. I was expecting the egg to be made separately and put onto the crepe. It was cooked into the crepe, making it the same consistency. The caramelized onions were too sweet. I sort of picked around mine, enjoying the crunchy edges, but overall, the flavor was boring and felt heavy and full of carbs. We enjoyed sitting outside on their back patio. This is way beyond anything I've ever experienced as a crêpe, this side of Bretagne. I had the Mile End and it was perfect. Chock full of spinach and mushrooms and gooey with melted cheddar cheese. My husband had a breakfast plate involving some delicious sausage and - of course, my test for every brunch spot - really good potatoes. And it came with a locally sourced croissant. As with all places that get my 5-star seal of approval, it was the little touches that made the difference. The fruit salad is not some kind of throwaway garnish. It's an actual fruit salad, with perfectly ripe fruit. The kind you want to eat (the kind that is not two pieces of pale cantaloupe and a cube of watermelon). And the coffee was great as well. The ambiance is awesome, although, on a hot summer day, you may end up waiting on a terrasse spot because it's just too hot inside. Know that. And know that it's worth the wait. I can't wait to come back for a cozy winter lunch indoors and sit right next to the steamy hot crêpe pans that are openly on display. Oh, and the service was really good too. Granted, buckwheat isn't everyone's jam- if you're inclined towards crêpes of the purple-grey variety this is your spot. Major pluses: they take reservations if you're a bigger group and they'll gladly veganize most of the menu. The crêpes themselves are vegan so it's all about subbing the filling for something you can eat. Just make sure you mention that's what you're up to otherwise they'll butter the crêpes.
