BUYER BEWARE!!!
I've never written an online review for a place before, but after my experience here, I felt obligated to warn people of this place. I live in Liberty Village and was looking for a close and affordable mechanic. Spadina Auto was a natural choice since it's so close at King & Strachan. I read all the reviews on Yelp and the majority were quite favorable. I figured the one really bad review by Potatoes S. was just a fluke.
I planned a trip to the states and was getting all my car stuff in order - oil/filter change, winter to summer tires, and brakes. I got my oil/filter changed in Mississauga because that's where I used to live. I didn't want to have to go all the way back to there to my old mechanic for my tires and brakes because I know I would've had to leave my car there for a few days and would need a ride back or would have to Mississauga Transit and then TTC back home. So that's why I went to Spadina Auto.
The main guy there, Wayne, is a really friendly and nice. He's very personable and buddy buddy with you - he's a bit of a long-winded talker though. He told me his goal is to educate the customer as well as take care of their car needs. So at this point, I was completely sold. He broke down the process (he'd look at my car, see what's wrong, give me options and approx. costs of each, then do the option I chose). I left my car there on Tuesday and got it back all fixed by that Friday, very quick service in my opinion considering the work it needed (new pads & discs, callipers to be reinforced but not replaced, and to optionally replace my handbrake cable), so I do commend their speed of service since I figured it might have taken at least a full week. Wayne followed up with me a few times during those days and even sent me pictures of what he saw and thought needed addressing. I gave him the go-ahead to replace the pads, discs and update the callipers for as cheap as possible (I take care of my car, but I don't need the best parts and I don't care if it has a tiny bit of wear). Wayne had also told me that while he could fix the handbrake, it wasn't totally necessary. So I told him that if it would cost me $200-300 or more, then to just not do it and I could get it fixed next time. By that Friday, I was picking up my car expecting the cost to be around $1200-1300 after some researching online - and this was my worst-case scenario high ball estimate. So I saw the car and it looked great - brakes were way better and all fixed up, including my handbrake. When I got my bill, I was blown away with the HUGE total of around $2200! I was so shocked that I kind of just went into autopilot asking what Wayne did and why it cost that much. That is a lot of money for me, so it came as a big blow. He told me that it was the usual price for what was done and that he told me so before. I distinctly remember him telling me that it would be "around $1000, probably a hundred or so more." I didn't know what to say, so I just paid and left. At that point, the damage was done, so I had to bite the bullet.
I still couldn't believe it, so when reviewing the bill when I got home, I saw that he had ordered really expensive parts combined with his already expensive labor costs. Not to mention that he went and fixed my handbrake that cost around $600 for parts and labor after I had told him not to worry about it if it would cost that much! Finally, for what was the cherry on top that will now have me assess all places by their lowest rated Yelp/online reviews - there were 98 KILOMETERS MORE ON THE ODOMETER THAN WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN!!! After reading Potato S.'s review, I figured to take down my odometer reading just in case, and Potato S. was totally right! Wayne did tell me that he test drove it to make sure the brakes were in working order, but I didn't think he meant that he could literally drive to Ajax and back for it! I was steaming! I'm not very confrontational either, so I'm just taking it as a lesson learned now and never going back there again! I'm very certain now that Wayne has his super friendly act on to take advantage of unsuspecting customers who do not know much about cars and approximate costs of services, parts and labor.
BOTTOM LINE:
Unless you're ok with overpaying way too much for service, only go here if you really need to like for emergencies or if you're in a real bind car-wise (they do have 24-hour towing service). But know that it will cost you a lot! While the service is good quality (auto-wise), fast, convenient if you live close by, and "friendly," it is VERY EXPENSIVE and will cost you! If you do have to go there, BE VERY SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT GETS DONE TO YOUR CAR AND FOR HOW MUCH YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY EXACTLY. Otherwise, you may get blindsided like I was and may have to foot a bill $1000 more than you were expecting. Also, if your car has to be test driven for any reason while it's there, don't be surprised if there's about 100 km more on your odometer when you get it back read more
