We had an amazing experience here when our car suddenly overheated while we were traveling. Another local shop also with good reviews was too busy to take us and referred us here to George and he took amazing care of us! He looked at the car relatively quickly (within the hour) and had it safe to drive again within another hour.... and then charged us way less than we were expecting!! I've been going to George for years and will always deal with him before going elsewhere. In fact his whole team is top notch. What I like about dealing with George? He's "salt of the earth", not a scammy bone in his body. In fact he's suggested alternate repairs that were in fact cheaper than what I initially thought was required. For example: I had a hole in my exhaust, and instead of replacing the entire pipe and muffler, he simply cut out a section of the pipe and welded another in. A simple frugal solution. I've officially changed mechanics. Went to my dealership this morning which charged me $2,000 to purchase and change a shifter cable. I called Don Valley Auto Center and the owner said "heading for coffee but come by and I'll check it out for you". Showed up, the place is busy as hell but he's waiting for me. George at Don Valley Auto can be an enigma. Some days he's all sunshine and smiles, while on other days he will be curt to the point of being rude. Hell, somedays, he's just plain rude. If he were anybody else, I'd never do business with him, BUT... he's incredibly knowledgeable, honest, helpful, and trustworthy. Plus, he will always bend over backward to get his customers great value for their money. Because of that, I keep returning and I keep accepting his mercurial personality as the price of admission for getting to take my vehicles to a local auto shop that is a rarity in this industry. He once insisted on modifying a 3rd party radiator to fix my Saab -- a $600 solution -- because he said there was no way he was going to let me pay for a $2,000 OEM replacement part for a car that was already 10 years old. You can't put a price on that kind of service. In my Leslieville neighbourhood, George is something of a living legend. If you need good work done honestly and affordably, he and his son-in-law Tom are the guys you should see. read more

I have been trusting George and Tom to look after my cars for just over 3 years. Can't say enough good things about them. I have seen a lot of mechanic in my 25 years of car ownership and have learned you need to find one with two traits - knowledgeable and honest. George has got both in spades. The fact that he and Tom are both great guys is an added bonus. I am shocked to see any negative posts. I suspect the rusted connector pipe is not telling the complete story or George's full explanation. I have recommended these guys to several people who are all now regular customers. Gotta thank the jerk mechanic (Pat) at Downtown Gas & Auto for the recommendation - he was too busy chatting with a friend to look at a broken stud on my wheel. I was buying my first used car and decided to do a pre-purchase inspection last minute. They were able to schedule me in and did the inspection for me even though I was late (due to snow). Still coming here as I have had only excellent service from George and his crew. 2008 Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Turbo. Close to 160K km. I had a coil to one of the cylinder's spark plugs go bad three months ago. Parts and labor costs were very reasonable. I had my Subaru's timing belt and all the other timing belt associated parts and oil pump changed about two months ago. I could have just had the timing belt replaced if I wanted to but George advised me that since it was a lot of work just to change the timing belt, I might as well change all the other old parts since another part would likely break soon anyway. George gave me the parts at cost with no mark-up. He just charged for labor which was reasonable. I read online about my car and it is a time intensive job to just change the timing belt. I even checked to see if I could find a better price for the parts online and in the US but I could not. He also gave me Continental parts which is a good brand for the parts I needed. My engine light came on three days ago and I went to see George about it. He checked and it was simply bad gas(gasoline that is) and he reset the engine light. No charge. Thanks again George. I was shocked today​ when I arrived at Don Valley Auto Centre and was greeted with a hostile very angry old man. He appeared to be the owner/manager. It was an emergency my brake lines had leaked all fluid while driving. I was able to pull over and get a tow. The parking lot at Don Valley Auto Centre parking lot was almost empty and the tow truck driver waited for me to talk to the manager and say where to park. Instead,​ the Manager rushed out shouting he was booked up till May​ 20 I mentioned that he had serviced my car previously​ hoping it meant something that I was a previous customer. Well,​ that set him off he got even more hostile said he didn't care and shouted in parting that my well-maintained​ vehicle should be taken off the road. The tow truck driver was astonished he had not experienced this kind of rage previously. While I did not take his out of control shouting personally​ It is not something I will never experience again. I only went to this Auto Centre because it was close to home in Riverdale. read more

Every time I accelerated my car would make a loud whirring sound and then some rumbling as if something was loose beneath it-- I was concerned about it so I called Don Valley Auto Centre right as they opened after a friend recommended them to me. I got my car there in 5 minutes and was immediately taken care of (it was a Monday morning and they seemed to be very busy) and within the next 2 hours my car was fixed! No hidden agenda, just straight to the point. He explained what was wrong, what parts I needed and the cost of the labour. I would definitely recommend George and his team! read more

George (owner) and his son in-law Tom (shop manager) are truly stand-up guys! They are super honest and transparent with pricing and what needs to be done to your car....how much are parts, how long it'll take, and the labor costs. They explain what's wrong and how they'll fix it, and they always end the conversation with, "don't worry, we'll take care of you"....which is absolutely true! I brought my BMW in there for rear shocks, and they had a very competitive price for OEM parts. After a week there was an issue with my rear-mounts and i brought in my car with no appointment and they replaced it with no questions asked. I also brought my car in for an intermittent electrical issue that was ongoing for 3 years and two other mechanics couldn't diagnose the issue, but George and Tom figured it out right away. Quality work at very fair prices. Definitely my go to mechanics and I would highly recommend them to anyone! read more

Things have changed at this go-to shop of mine. Been coming here for over 10 years and always found the service excellent and most of all honest. Very disappointed to say that things have changed. They seem to have gotten comfortable with the accolades and the service and honesty have declined. Recently brought in my car for a noisy exhaust - they told me I needed a new catalytic converter which would cost around $700-800 incl. labour and taxes etc. I took my car to get a second opinion and there was nothing wrong with the catalytic converter - a connector pipe behind the converter had rusted and was loose. A cheap welding job of less than $90 fixed it up nicely. Not saying that it wasn't possible to replace the whole thing and a welding job has a shorter shelf life, but when I called to ask George why they didn't give me the option of welding it together he waffled and told me that it all came as one assembly blah blah blah. I may be female and no nothing about cars but there is a world of difference between a connector to the catalytic converter (which can be welded) and the converter itself. I LOVE Don Valley Auto! I have never known George and the guys at Don Valley to give me bad advice or to charge me more than I needed to pay. They are always looking for ways to SAVE me money. I have been going to Don Valley for over 15 years. They are always there for me when I need them and I enjoy going to the shop where I am treated with courtesy and generosity. The person with the catalytic converter issue should wait a few months to see how long their repair actually lasts before making disparaging remarks about a perfectly reputable and honest business. Went here for some engine noise I didn't like. They said I needed a major engine tune-up. Paid $700, got in the car, turned it on, noise was still there. $700 of unnecessary work, and I don't think they even checked that they'd solved my problem. read more
