The staff at Spadefoot Nursery is very knowledgeable and easy going. They focus on native and non-invasive plants that will not only survive our climate, but nurture it and help the entire ecology thrive. The selection is never ending and you can find many native plants that are difficult to find, elsewhere, and impossible to find at the large chain nurseries. I've ended up taking so many plants back to larger places (that I won't name, but we all know) because, even when buying them at whatever price, at the time, I already know that they won't last the year that they are guaranteed for. It always seems like such a waste. Built from the ground up, it's nice to go somewhere that you know isn't just a gear in the big box monster machine. Gardening was one of the things that got me through a cancer journey, and yesterday, as I put my hands in sand and soil, I watched a hummingbird light on one of my favorite flowering bushes, that Jared, the owner, helped me pick out, near the beginning. It was little when I chose it, but now is almost five feet high. I don't remember it's name, but if I were to show anyone who works at Spadefoot, they would know what plant it is, where it can thrive, what care it will require, and when it will bloom. With some thought and planning, one can literally have a rotating buffet of blossoming food for all the critters, without adding any dyes, sugars, or plastic feeders. Nature does it all. I think of this nursery, every single morning, when I see this particular bush, which feeds the bees, hummers... Offers shade and shelter to those without wings, and other wonders, and remember how all things are connected. If you want a peaceful, lovely way to spend some time, skip the bustle and take a stroll, through this unpretentious garden space, and take a bit of that home, with you. Been meaning to try Spadefoot forever and finally ended up nearby. Such a sweet outdoor space packed with a variety of native plants (lots of herbs, greens and bushes/trees this season). I picked out some herbs, a sun gold tomato plant and a large Mexican oregano which I haven't found anywhere else in town. I love how accessible this spot is and that they house the freedge out front as a means of mutual aid for community members to support each other with food. A perfect combo run by great folks! read more

Spadefoot Nursery is my favorite nursery in Tucson. They grow the plants here which really makes a difference in the survival rate of the plants. They are very knowledgeable about the types of conditions the plants will do best in too which is super helpful. They carry a lot of different native varieties too. read more

Lots of knowledge, lots of plants. Spadefoot is super helpful and available to assist with plant ID, care, and which plants to choose, with a narrow focus on natives and useful or edible plants. The online store is such a helpful thing and it makes up for them not being open all week. Some folks aren't into the vibe, which seems to be a common thread among negative reviews. Sure, they're not the cheapest, and sometimes you'll get opinions along with your information, and it won't always be perky customer service; there are other nurseries and box stores if you want that. Spadefoot fills its own ecological niche in the Tucson nursery population: responsibly grown and purposefully chosen plants, provided with information, to help protect and nourish the Sonoran Desert and its inhabitants. read more

What a Tucson gem! So very knowledgeable about native plants, how to grow them! I had some non-native milkweed with lots of queen butterfly caterpillars, needed more food for them, and found several native varieties here! Learned that my particular non-native, when trimmed back at late fall, isn't so bad after all. They grow their own plants, no pesticides. Bonus: one of the milkweed I bought today came with caterpillar eggs, so now I have even more mouths to feed! read more

Over the last couple years, I've made a concerted effort to focus on bringing in native species to my garden. Spadefoot was recommended as one of the few nurseries that specialized in native plants. My experience in person was great. The person I spoke to had some helpful recommendations for plants that would fit what I was looking for, and I appreciated that both employees were masking. The problem was when I got home. The desert hopbush I'd purchased couldn't withstand having the container gently laid on its side with the entirety of the pressure on the plastic pot, and when I reached out to Spadefoot to see what my options were, I was accused of mishandling the plant and that since the top had been "sheered off" I must have dropped it on its head. Since that didn't happen during or after transport, that indicates a quality issue to me, which is unfortunate given the prices they charge. I'll be sticking to Desert Survivors from now on as I've never had this problem with anything I've ever purchased from them. Whoever responded to my messages would have been better served just saying they don't offer refunds or exchanges rather than respond with accusations of things I didn't do. EDIT: After seeing another yelper's note about the owner throwing a tantrum, I suspect that was the same person I dealt with via text (their preferred method of communication per the phone message). He sent me several blocks of texts blaming me even after I gave up trying to get a replacement. He was very adamant about his expertise and my incompetence, and that's fine. The customer isn't always right, but sometimes the owner or employee is still a jerk. read more

I love buying native plants for my yard from Spadefoot Nursery and I'm so happy they are now easy to find in Tucson! I have been a fan of owner Petey Mesquitey and his radio segment "Growing Native" on KXCI. Petey has been selling plants and sharing knowledge at the Bisbee Farmer's Market for a few years but now his daughter and son-in-law are bringing their awesome selection of plants to the big city. For now you can find them selling at the Mercado San Agustin ANNEX on Saturday mornings and at 5 Points Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings, but I believe they hope to have a storefront in Tucson soon. The best way to find out where they will be selling and to learn about their plants is by following on social media. The plants are beautiful, well-cared for, and they have a big variety including hard to find species and plants you rarely see being cultivated for sale. Definitely ask them questions about how best to care for your new plant friends and if you have the right spot for them to thrive. I love growing native plants because they are much more likely to make it through our extreme desert climate and can eventually survive with very little watering after they get established, plus they make a good home/food for native critters amongst our urban landscape. read more
