(Just a disclaimer: this establishment is kid friendly... I mean, they've got toys for kids to play with and all that jazz, so don't read this review and think- oh they're anti-kid, as it's not the case) So there use to be this guy who would come in fairly often, and he had two kids in tow, fairly often- and the kids were obnoxious as all get out, fairly often, and the guy was oblivious/indulgent... fairly often. When they showed up, they took over. The guy just didn't care or didn't understand that the patrons of the cafe weren't there to assist socially inept fathers at ineptly socializing their kids. Now I wish I were the kind of guy who had the gumption to address the situation, you know, take the guy aside and say something like, "everything about you makes me sad and angry," but I'm not, so I didn't. However, someone eventually did. And the guy, in response, was entirely self-righteous, defensive, and rude [from my understanding as I wasn't there.] Then on a different day, an afternoon when I was there, the owner called the guy out. She called the guy out, and given the context, she was polite about it. She defended the person he was rude to and stood up for all the patrons who were annoyed by his uniquely carefree style of parenting. And then the guy started to argue with her. He was dismissive, self-righteous, entitled, and rude. So she kicked him out. Thankfully. Long story short... I don't like going places where acting like a jerk is tolerated. I think that's because I don't like jerks. If you don't like jerks, this is your spot. read more

Funky is Thy Monkey, What a great place! It's hard to find anything not to like here. Extremely warm and welcoming staff, an amazing array of healthy muffins and pastries made in house, great coffee, and the sweetest atmosphere. It's a piece of Portland past here. The neighborhood coffee houses that exudes Portland spirit. I love that. Came in to meet a friend and catch up. We like to try out different coffee places and this one is special. A few small tables inside, plenty of local products for sale, and a cool place overall. We were warmly welcomed here, and I will be back for sure. They offer a few light meals, bagels, smoothies, and a good espresso menu with their own concoctions. It's super clean, super friendly, a great value, and if you love Portland , you'll love it here. I am making this review with a disclaimer. I love this coffee shop... I hate the coffee. I think it is terrible. If I liked it, I would be in everyday. There have been discussions at dinners on our street how sad we are over this coffee vs. lovely shop-ness. I am sorry. I love the owner, I think he is one of the nicest guys I have met. He remembers us even though we don't stop in often. He is always ready with really interesting conversation. There are lots of things for sale that are handmade in the area. Which is awesome. I love that you can buy things made in the neighborhood. I want to like this coffee shop. No, I want to love it, live in it, spend sunny mornings reading in the window nook. Scott, so as to avoid awkward and forced conversations with the other parents? March on over to Space Monkey. Their house coffee is french pressed and the beans they use are super dark roasted, and a tad bitter but I like my coffee to punch me in the gut. We walked in to the cramped café stood within 5 feet of both cashiers and not one of those girls said a word to us. The hubby and i stood around for about 5 mins. One cashier flirted her panties off with the guy in front of us who had one drink. Mean while her counter part walks pass us three times and doesn't say a word. After a long run one morning, I figured I earned myself a treat and decided to give Space Monkey another try since it would be nice to have a coffee shop I enjoy within a stone's throw away from home. This update is over a year after my first visit, and the little shop doesn't seem to have changed much appearance-wise. The two experiences were night and day though. The barista this time (who I am almost certain may be the same one as before but then again, it has been over a year so I could be wrong) was warm, friendly, and pleasantly chatty. I ordered an iced mocha since it was warm out, even though iced coffee beverages are not normally what I prefer. It was good, maybe a little heavy on the ice, but definitely good. While I can't say I'm a huge fan yet, I have hope that I will grow to like Space Monkey more, but for now they have definitely bumped it up to A-OK. read more

How I long to love this place. I tried it a handful of times when I first moved into the neighborhood...each time hoping my previous experience wasn't as bad as I had thought. Sadly, I finally gave up hope. There's always a hard balance to strike between supporting local business and enabling establishments that should be forced to improve to simply keep skating by with a mediocre offering. Space Monkey happens to be one of only two coffee shops in the Mt. Scott-Arleta neighborhood. This, however, should not be an excuse for producing sub-par lattes. Portland is, after all, a hotbed for superb coffee. The owner is a wonderful guy. He will chat you up and he seems to remember every one who comes through his front door. These are talents many baristas lack. I just wish the coffee beans were quality and the shots pulled weren't bitter. read more

Being a fan of the Fight Club, i nearly lost my sh*t when I was strolling down 72nd Avenue and walked past a sign that read SPACE MONKEY. Space monkies! And coffee! Brought sanctimoniously together at long last! But it's not only the name that tugs on my heart strings. It's the welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. The comfy chairs strewn throughout. The availability of the most current Mercury and Willamette Week. The organic coffee. The free Wi-Fi and house computer. The local art. The goofy postcards and locally made jewelry. The affordable prices. The always-tempting baked goods and wraps. And Tim, the barista, who you'll almost always find zoning out on his laptop, but always willing to slip it under the counter to engage in some stimulating conversation. Oh yeah. The barista is super friendly and welcoming!!!! Could read my mind to know exactly what I was craving! The lavender honey latte perked me right up and satisfied my coffee craving to another degree! So I love the idea of a corner coffee shop that I can stop in and be welcomed warmly, and as much as it looks like it, Space Monkey does not do this... My friend and I walked in this morning, and no one was even in the coffee shop, not even the barista, and then finally she came from the back, no welcome or hello, not even a smile, just a "what can I get you?" Seriously? Anyway, we had the lavender steamers, which were actually pretty tasty, as well as a pastry each, and those were good. I do love the atmosphere and I do wish this could be a comfortable place, but unfortunately, the service really brings the quality of this cute little coffee house down. Extremely fresh and tasty sandwiches. The roast beef on sourdough was yummy. Veggie sandwich on a pesto parmesan bagel was fantastic. Totally un-pretentious, cozy, and has a great little kids area - a place where one can stay for hours and feel as if they are in the comfort of their own home. I would say that it is an intimate coffee shop with the ability to work and study due to its small size and close proximity to others. Wandered in this cute little cafe and the vibe is super chill as all of Portland is. I got a Carmel macchiato, and the first thing the barista ask me is "like Starbucks?" "Ummm no not like Starbucks. Like space monkey does it?" Then asked me about milk % which was super nice of her. She didn't have to ask me about that. The older server with dreadlocks is a really judgy bitch and wants to only talk to people she knows around the neighborhood. The coffee has barley any caffeine making me wonder if they just pick it up at Winco in bulk and it's part daycare. After a class at Mt. Scott Community Center I thought I'd get a muffin and Americano and try this place out. An easy litmus test for a coffee joint. Maybe I caught them on a bad day? Friday around 10 a.m.? There was a line, and people seemed to be waiting around a lot for things. There was a lot of switching of staff to the front and back, and some people complaining about the things they got. I finally ordered, and got the wrong thing, then the replacement just wasn't very good. The muffin i got -- i kid you not -- tasted like play dough. I don't eat play dough, but i imagine this is how it tastes. My husband and son all said they hated the muffin. My son said it was the worst muffin he ever had. bummer. I ordered my coffee, waited a good five minutes, finally heard the two of them discussing my coffee, got handed my bagel and no coffee, and when I inquired the girl said "oh, I'll make right now!" I had heard them talking about it, so maybe they were just hoping I had forgotten so that they wouldn't have to make it? I was initially very excited about finding a nice little neighborhood coffee house. However, I have had a couple of negative experiences. I used a punch card and filled it up from buying milkshakes and smoothies. When I went to redeem it for a free milkshake I was told abruptly, "There is NO way you bought 10 milkshakes." I was told that I could not redeem it for a milkshake or a smoothie (I don't drink coffee). Another time a male employee sneezed into his hand (huge snot rocket) and then proceeded to hand me an unwrapped straw. Terrible costumer service twice was enough to keep me away. So coffee's not my thing. Sure, I need a cup in the morning, but it's nothing to get excited about. I mean if you're going out to drink and be social go to a bar. But I'm in Portland, and coffee is like their national drink. And I had a business meeting here and the guy suggested this place. I'm not sure how to judge coffeehouses. There not bars, so I shouldn't use the same measure. The drink was good. The staff was friendly. Well, I guess those two things matter just like at a bar. Comfortable chairs. Big windows facing the street. Lots of interesting looking people coming and going. But, this is Portland and everyone is interesting looking. Plenty of kids and infants in strollers seemed to come and go, so it is very family friendly. I don't usually see that in a bar. Or at least I shouldn't. It faces a park, which is nice. And that may explain the kids. I hope the young ones aren't coming for the coffee. But, it's Portland. They may already have java in their bottles. read more
