I've been a long-time customer of SpaMD, even when they were in the disgusting cigar-smoked house on Grand Avenue. I followed them to their new location in the Cathedral Hill area. Unfortunately, my reviews went from 5-star to 2-star over the past year. I have used multiple estheticians there and have not had great experiences since Emily and Jocelyn left. I used to get a facial once a month but my last facial from Maureen microabraded my skin so badly that I was red and inflamed for days. My other experiences were that the chatting and conversation was way too much. (Don't you know when you go for facial you just want quiet, low stress calm?). Today, showed up for a much-needed facial and they messed up the schedule and didn't have me listed even though I was able to show proof by email confirmation. If you have have dark skin I wouldn't recommend this place for anything laser related. I'm African American and went in for a laser hair treatment. I ended up with burns, hyperpigmentation, and hyperpigmentation. When I first called, I was told the laser tech did exactly what she should have done and that I must have went tanning beforehand. I reached out to another skin care specialist/owner of another medspa and was notified that the use of diode lasers for dark skin is both outdated and dangerous and that I should contact Spa MD for treatments to fix the issue. Over the course of a month after my treatment, I communicated back and forth with the owner, Maury, through her scheduler. The scheduler was very patient, understanding, and professional. However, every time I tried to communicate with Maury to see how my skin issue could be fixed, I was told she was in an appointment and then once she was out of her appointment she'd communicate with me through her scheduler. A month later when I finally went back to the office for a (finally) scheduled follow up appointment, the owner was very dismiss and unapologetic. I was so distrustful through the whole back and forth that I ended up recording all communication. read more

Excellent service and results! Very friendly staff! I purchased a Groupon for two facials and the results of my first facial were great! Jocelyn was very professional and knowledgeable. She took time to understand my skin care goals and needs. In her product recommendations, she was not pushy and I did not feel pressured to make a purchase. In addition to my facial, I came back to try a custom airbrush tan and I loved the results! I have had spray tans in the past that seem to wash/wear off right away or leave a lot of streaking. My airbrush tan from Jocelyn is perfectly even, a nice, natural dark color and so far it has not started to wear away. For only $25, it is definitely worth it. Environment: Although they are located above Stogie's on Grand, the cigar smell does not make its way to the second floor where the spa is located. I regularly go here for facials, both microdermabrasion facials and regular facials. The estheticians have been really sweet: Cassondra, and Paige both have cheerful attitudes and give very soothing facial massages. Another reviewer mentioned a smoke smell from the cigar shop downstairs, and I've smelled it in the entrance, but never up on 2nd and 3rd floor (where Spa MD is). These are probably the second best facials I've received, but at a third of the price of my favorite I keep coming back. They never leave the room during treatment, they massage your shoulders, arms and hands while your face is in a mask and the microdermabrasion results are amazing. Try it. read more

I tried Spa Consultants with a Groupon for 2 facials. The office was a little tricky to locate as its only labeled via a door sign, no business sign on the road/sidewalk. While I was there, they were orienting or training someone which I found a little distracting. In addition they were late getting to me. I had a 10am appointment and I waited until 1015 before anyone asked for me. Meanwhile several women came & went & busied on their way. The waiting area is small & no one offers you beverages or anything while you wait which I found to be lacking as many other spas cater to such desires. Chairs are uncomfortable & there are only 3 of them... Minimal space for belongings & no coat rack or closet. The service is good but I'm willing to bet it's equally as good at a more comfortable place. Where you can truly relax from entry to exit. read more

Just got eyelash extensions. The gal was incredibly nice- and the lashes look okay. several are clumped / glued together and around four lash stems were put in oddly so they were raking my eyeball painfully. I might have noticed it right away but my eyes were stinging and watering for an quite awhile after my appointment. The glue stung my eyes and watered the entire process. It was incredibly uncomfortable and stressful. I had to cut the stems carefully myself at home. For such an expensive procedure and all the research I did before I expected it to be relaxing and painless. Won't go there again. It's a shame I was really really excited about them. :-(. read more

I had a great facial from Sam this week. I have never had one before and she explained each step so I knew what to expect. She was gentle and efficient and the products she used smelled AMAZING. Sam was funny and used this wonderful wand that emitted heat that made me just want to fall asleep while she massaged my face and shoulders. I highly recommend Sam and Spa MD! read more

I purchased a 60 min brightening facial with a daily deal. With a regular price of $138, I was expecting one hell of a facial. Spa MD is hidden away on grand ave. on the third floor of the building right by Stogies. If you have a problem climbing stairs, you will have a problem getting there. The space is quite small but is nice and relaxing. My esthetician, Emily, was very pleasant and gave me a very nice facial. I have sensitive skin and all of the products that she used were appropriate and did not irritate my skin (slight exception for the lactic acid mask but that's the point of a lactic acid mask and it was neutralized properly after removal). My only concern is that about 4 extractions she did were not deep enough and I still resulted in white heads for days after. It's been a few days since I had my facial and it's looking pretty darn good overall. I would never pay $138 for this facial but it seems like they offer a lot of discounts regularly and i'm not sure many people pay full price for their services. For example, after my facial, they said I had locked in a lower rate for the rest of the year. I would definitely come here again if the price is lower. I also note that they offer $14 brow waxes. I want to try those out because that's a great place for a nice spa/salon. read more

I definitely think this place is VERY reasonably priced, for facials and for some of their other skin treatments. I plan to keep returning! I have been to Spa MD for 2 facials and eyelash extensions that I bought on Groupon. I liked the facial so much I have 2 more scheduled. Kami did a wonderful job tailoring the facial to my skin needs and she went long just to finish extractions at no extra cost to me. She was also able to remove milia that I have had for years. Not satisfied. I know I wrote a review prior to this one saying my eyelash extensions looked good. But they weren't. I dealt with itchy crusty eyes for a couple weeks and the glue was yanking my real lashes/skin. I went to another place to get them done again and she told me whoever did mine previously had did a horrible job and asked if my eyes hurt by the way she placed them because they were overlapping the lashes. I told her my eyes have been bothering me feeling like they were tugging and getting red. Also last time I went in I got yelled/blamed by I think the manager because I didn't put my middle initial for emailed appointments so it screwed up there bookings. And Paige the one who did my eyelashes kept answering her phone while I was laying there wondering why she didn't just have her phone off to begin with. The entire staff was wonderful and helpful, but GET THEM OUT OF THAT BUILDING! I had a 60 min facial with Emily, who was great. After 60 minutes in the attic of the Cigar smoking establishment on the first floor my hair and skin smell so bad. I came home and my family complained my clothes were drenched in cigar smoke and tobacco. They said "did you get a facial in a bar?" Horrible building. The smoke is so bad it burns your eyes and ruins your winter coat. I simply can not return to this location. I hope the employees get a chance to move somewhere else soon. read more

Spa MD is located directly above Stogies on Grand (a cigar store). The scent is overpouring. I found it distracting my entire facial. I do not think I will return simply for that reason. If the scent doesn't bother you, I think they provide a good service at a reasonable price (with a groupon; I think it is a bit overpriced without). read more

I bought a microdermabrasion and chemical peel feom groupon. I did not get a peel. She said usually she does 6-7 layers but she will only do one because my skin is sensitive. It was my first time getting a peel so i didnt know how harsh it would be. Nothing happened my skin did not peel at all. She said i would see it peel in 2-3 days and nothing happened. I dont know why she wouldnt just do the whole service, maybe because it was from groupon and i wasnt paying full price. read more

I purchased a groupon for a platinum facial here and had a fantastic experience! My esthetician, Cassondra, was cheerful and helpful. The room I received the facial in was pleasant and well-decorated. Soothing music played. I didn't smell any of the smoke mentioned in one reviewer's post. I was wow'ed by the facial itself. Everything felt so soothing on my skin, and Cassondra would massage my shoulders, neck, arms, and hands while waiting for different masks to work. I came out of the experience feeling extremely relaxed with the smoothest skin! I would definitely recommend for others to go here. It's an excellent value for the price you pay. read more

my second microdermabrasion ever! The front desk was very pleasant and knowledgeable, my skin has been very rough and dry lately, my skin therapist was very helpful in selecting the appropriate products to use on my face, the microdermabrasion was not painful at all my last experience was painful leaving streaks across my forehead and cheeks eek! I was referred to this spa from my sister or i would have never tried this again! i really loved the look and feel of my skin after the treatment, all of the skin care products were medical grade as well as a hour long microdermabrasion to help rehydrate my skin after the treatment. I could not get in immediately and there are stairs to climb since they are on the second floor but other than that i was happy with my experience and i would recommend the Medi Spa to my friends and family read more

2 facials with a Groupon that were supposed to be 75 minutes each - one was 50 minutes and one was 55 - not even an hour long. I had been looking for a new skin care place and thought of trying this because of the special offer from Groupon. Not only did they not retain me but they are getting poor reviews. The other reviews are mentioning people that I don't believe even work there so I'm not sure who they are ..... ? They were on time, I had no problems with the small waiting room but the facials themselves were a bit ridiculous. One did no extractions but had a great massage. The other had no massage (at all) but did some extractions. The time of these were just sad. 50 and 55 minutes for 75 minute facials weren't ok. I should have said something but didn't. Would never, ever go back here. Too many other places to go to. read more

I go there for facials purchased on Groupon and enjoy the work of Emily and Stacey. I have also tried various peels with Marnie and they were good too. The only thing that wasn't good was my one botox treatment. She hit a nerve or spot or something above my eyebrow causing my brow to rise and creating a new wrinkle. I called and was told to wait it out. I should have gone back after a month to see if they could do something to relax it, but frankly didn't want to futz with the area more. The wrinkle was there for about a year. I get botox somewhere else. All in all, it's a decent place though not particularly posh. It is above a tobacco shop and while they have filters in every room, there is a subtle cigar smell. You get used to it quickly. read more
