Overall a very good experience. We purchased our home 4 months ago and found out the chimney was unusable and that the siding was rotting and leaking where the chimney meets the roof. We had Pat come check out the siding. He told us the siding was in good shape, but we agreed that it was the chimney that had to go. The price he quoted us was very good and included taking the old prefab chimney out, removing the siding around it, re-siding the house, repairing the soffit and roof, and rewiring the exterior light and outlet. We were happy because it's a relatively small job that another company might not take. It took a while for him to squeeze us in his schedule, but he kept in contact so we would know he didn't forget about our job. They came out two weekends ago and knocked it out in three days. The house looks amazing. You wouldn't know we had a chimney if it wasn't for the foundation. They did a really good job matching the old siding and paint. Great work. We're also happy because they finished the weekend before hurricane Harvey; no moldy chimney for us. I would definitely recommend SW Exteriors to friends and family. read more

I called Southwest Exteriors to get a quote on putting Hardiboard on our garage that currently has wood siding. They actually advised me NOT to do that because the garage wasn't strong enough to carry the weight, the cost was high and since this wouldn't match the rest of the house it would hurt our resale value. He then went on to give me advice on how to properly install the replacement wood siding to insure that it would last as long as possible. This is a company with integrity!! Anybody that has tried to get remodeling or repair work in Austin can probably attest to how difficult it is to get people that either: a) do good work, b) complete jobs when they say they will, c) charge a reasonable price, or d) stand behind their work. Southwest Exteriors is one of the few companies that does all of the above and more. We have a house that was built in the 1970s and was made with cedar plank siding and old casement windows. After 35 years of Austin weather the outside had taken all it could take and we had to have all of our windows replaced (over 40!) and completely re-sided. This was a big enough job that I voted for knocking the house down and starting over. Pat, the owner of SWE, came over and took a look at our project and gave us a reasonable bid to do the job. We did the project a little over a year ago. It took them about four weeks because the project was so massive but they did a superb job and it made a big difference in the way the house looked, smelled, and our electricity bills (no more drafts). The reason that I'm writing this now is that we had a problem with one of our windows recently - a part of the frame broke. Maybe it was a problem with the installation, maybe it was one of our kids damaging it, maybe it was some other worker doing something - we didn't know. Didn't matter to SWE. They came over and fixed the problem and didn't charge us anything. THAT'S customer service. I heartily recommend these guys. I can't say enough good things about the Southwest Exteriors crew or the job they did. I've got a small, older fixer of a house and dealing with contractors/repairmen has been, by far, the worst thing about owning my home. But this company was a pleasure to work with. The owner Pat understood that I was on a budget and didn't put any upsell pressure on me at all. Instead, he showed up for the initial estimate early (what contractor does that?) and recommended window models to me based on my neighborhood and the house itself. When it turned out his supplier couldn't get the exact model of window in time for the job, Pat had them upgraded to the next level of window ... at no cost to me. His crew was also great. Day of the install they called me an hour before time to let me know they were tracking to be on time. When they got to my house, they were polite, professional, and cleaned up after themselves. As a gal who lives by myself, I never once felt uncomfortable at having any of these guys in my home. Pat came by as well to check up on how the job was going, which was a nice touch considering that I'm sure my little house was no where near his biggest job of the day. Long story short - I'm just sad that I don't need any more windows done, and that these guys don't do other jobs! I'd go back to them in a heartbeat. read more

When asked a simple question about work done and costs, as well as schedule, Pat pretty much refused to answer my questions and started arguing with me, then said he would get me on the schedule when he could. In the past my husband and I had Southwest Exteriors do a substantial hardy plank job on our home. The job was exceptionally well done. Recently we had Southwest Exteriors do an extensive window replacement job on our home. This involved replacing 8 large windows, some on the upstairs level. This job also was exceptionally well done in all respects. For example, even though the particular window installations that we required were difficult, Southwest Exteriors made the installation promptly and the finished product was such that the overall appearance of the house was greatly improved. The owner, Pat Ekstrum, personally was involved and kept up with every phase of the installation. He is a delight to work with. I am very pleased with the work that Pat and his guys at Southwest Exteriors did installing all new windows in my home! I got estimates from 3 different companies I found on Yelp, and Pat's estimate was about $1000 dollars cheaper than the others. I now have 7 brand new double paned vinyl windows that look great for a very fair price. Pat came out twice to talk to me and then sent his main guy, Joe, to do the measuring (I didn't even have to be there for that.) The only reason they are getting 4 stars instead of 5 is because it took almost a month for the windows to come in, rather than the 2 weeks he said it would take, and I felt like I had to chase them a bit to get info about when they were coming. However, that may have been legitimately out of Pat's hands, and I'm sure their prices are cheaper because he does all the phone calls and office work himself. Joe and (Brad, Brian...shoot, I should have written his name down...nice guy!) got all of the old windows out, new windows in, new trim painted and up, and their mess cleaned up in 2 days. They were both polite, professional and thorough. They were not in a hurry, but got it all done in the time they estimated, which I appreciate. I have had bad experiences with working with contractors, so I am very cautious (especially as a female home-owner). These guys made me feel comfortable and did what they said (and more at no additional cost to me). Highly recommended! read more

We had some repairs to our roof from a previous hail storm and some additional siding work that needed attention as well. Southwest exteriors provided a timely competitive bid and was able to do all the work at one time. There were some delays due to holidays and weather but the job was done and done well. A five star outfit if the promised follow up occurred but since it did not they lost a star. The good part about working with Southwest was the personnel and product. The 13 Marvin Infinity windows that Southwest installed are a nice piece of American manufacturing. They are well constructed and work smoothly and look great. Working with Pat Ekstrum, owner and chief salesman, was a pleasant experience. He was very responsive to our needs and schedule and willing to meet competitor pricing. He was able to quickly respond to window selection changes and installed the more expensive tempered glass only where demanded by the building code. He kept us informed about the schedule and met our pre Thanksgiving time line. The installation crew was quick and generally cleaned up the area fairly well. There were only a few small pieces of broken glass left behind and that is to be expected. The window openings had been measured quite accurately and the replacement windows constructed to specifications so everything fit well with a minimum of prying or follow up foam and weather stripping. With all the activity no thing was damaged inside or outside the house. The only downside was the abscence of a promised follow up call to clean up some of the mortar around the brickwork and to install upper handles on the double hung windows. But this is a small inconvenience compared to some experiences with Austin contractors. read more

We got some moisture in one of our windows. We thought we needed to have it replaced. We read the good reviews about this business, we called. Pat called back and offered to come out to take a look at it first. He did come out as he said he would and looked at the window and said "you should not need to replace the window". I was like "what? can't you see it's got moisture in there?". With his professional knowledge, Pat explained in detail why we didn't need to have the window replaced which would safe us about $400. That is what you'd expect from a reputable business. They don't push something that doesn't need to be done just for the sake of making a few bucks. Although we didn't end up with doing any business with them this time but would definitely go back to them again in the future for any other needs we may have. read more

I had Southwest Exteriors do an entire home re-siding project for me in 2011 for my 2-story house. They were quick, professional and reasonably priced. They had replaced the cheap pressed board 1978 siding with OSB (which really firmed up the structure, and added sound insulation) and then Hardiebacker planks. They even replaced rotted fascia, and re-painted the entire house (patio and shed included). Truly, the house is better than new. I appreciate their work even these three years later. Steer clear of this company. What a nightmare for us from beginning to end. The unskilled crew they sent out made so many mistakes and never seemed to understand the proper way of installing the tyvex or the hardiplank. They tried to cover mistakes with caulk . I chased the crew off my property several times until I could get a supervisor to check the job. Supervisor just kept telling us they would take care of it, sent crews out to fix mistakes and they just made more damage. I'm in the business and tried over and over to get them to do it right, but they would just act like they understood and continued to screw up. Overall I give this company an F-. Final straw was after several months of no contact from company and several things left undone, they sent a certified letter for final payment and tried to upcharge us for things that were originally included in the contract. I happened upon Southwest Exteriors when looking for 'window repair' on Yelp and saw they had high ratings. We purchased a house that the seller said were Magic Windows and there was an upstairs window that needed repair. Coincidentally after explaining the situation to Pat at Southwest Exteriors, he determined they were actually the ones that had installed the windows 12 years ago. He explained his schedule and said he would be out to take a look that week. He called and came as scheduled and looked at the windows. He explained the correct way to use the Magic windows and was thorough about what was needed for repair. The fix needed some parts that we did not have so he was going to check his stock to see if he had the part and he needed an extra person to help with the job and it would take a few hours. He also helped put the window back into the frame so there was no safety issue and seemed genuinely concerned to make sure it was safe before they could come back and fix it. They came back to fix the window a week later and then found another piece was missing and offered to call the company to get the part. They did all the work they could do for the repair and Pat said he would call back in about a week when the part would be in. Again, they called back and came during a break they had between jobs and fixed the window. Overall, they were great about communicating their schedule, the work that was needed to be done and followed through on their commitments.
