My flight back home was great! I didn't know you could go up to the desk agent and have your bag checked in for free, which was a nice surprise. Love this airport!! The TSA experience was super quick and easy and I appreciated not having to take my laptop out of my bag. On the flight, I was able to connect to Wifi and watch free movies on my phone, which was a great way to pass the time. The middle seat air conditioner felt great and loved that they had a phone holder so I could easily watch my movie without having to hold my phone the whole time. I have used Southwest Airlines for years for various reasons. I just have to say I am such a huge fan of their new pick your seat in advance option. It used to create so much stress with the boarding process to be competing for a seat. I don't really find that I'm spending more money than I used to because I used pay for early bird or priority seating which was expensive and still didn't guarantee me a seat. I find that it makes the boarding process go faster and you have fewer people getting priority boarding just to be able to pick their seat, now it's really just the people who truly need assistance. I also want to applaud Southwest Airlines for listening to their customers through this transition because they've made a lot of changes as far as carry-on baggage availability that has improved the process even more. I think it's great because there's still an option of open seating for those who prefer that, but for me the ability to choose an assigned seat encourages me to continue to be a loyal Southwest flyer. read more

I fly between Austin and Pittsburgh pretty regularly, and often using Southwest for the trip. I've been doing this route for a while now, and it's just nice to have that consistency when I'm heading back home. The terminal itself has a great vibe with the local music and food options, which is a nice touch compared to other airports I've been through. It had been quite a while since I last flew Southwest Airlines, but with a direct flight to Las Vegas for a conference, choosing Southwest was a "no-brainer". This trip also gave me a chance to experience some of the airline's recent changes, including assigned seating and checked baggage fees. I paid $45 to check one bag, which felt a bit steep. The airport experience was smooth overall. I printed my baggage tag and dropped off my suitcase without any delays. When it came time to board, I was assigned to Group #8 and wondered whether there would be any overhead bin space left by the time I got on the plane. Even though we were among the last groups to board, I was pleasantly surprised to find plenty of overhead bin room available. One of the things I've always appreciated about Southwest is its friendly and personable flight attendants. They often bring a sense of humor to the experience, making flying feel more relaxed and enjoyable. Southwest Airlines or how I refer to them as the "Flying Bus" has sure changed with their new assigned seat processes. Boarding is OK as you lineup per your group number. The more you pay the lower your group number is and you get perks like free checked bags and the ability to cancel your trip. My three star review is based on our experience flying HOU to AUS. The flight was maybe a third full and I had an empty row until a woman sat in the middle seat. Nether of us could understand why she had a middle seat assigned when there was an abundance of empty rows all around us. The woman did move across the aisle to an empty row, The FA saw her and said "next time ask permission before you move". Plus One was a few rows ahead of me and a woman in her row also want to move to an empty row and was told by the FA, No. Granted when flights are full I can see them enforcing their new assigned seat policy but let's use some common sense and put your customer's comfort - satisfaction first. I came to American Airlines because my friend that I haven't seen for 10 years came and her flight was departing in a couple hours. So I decided to drive to the Airport and send her off and maybe have lunch with her. When we went to the help desk I asked for a temporary boarding pass so that I could escort my friend to her gate. The girl at the front looked at me and had an attitude and said "No, Only if she was a minor or disabled" I then asked if she would consider and then her manager came out with the exact attitude and that they will not give me a pass. I then just said that I will purchase a ticket then, I didn't mind the price. They then just told me no again with attitude. I was a little shocked why this airline had such horrible customer service, but then saw the reviews and had a better understanding. I travel constantly and even purchased a CLEAR membership. I am an officer and a veteran, and the disrespect I felt was horrible. I will never fly Southwest again! read more

Being based out of the Phoenix area, I find that Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are the most ideal airlines to fly for me. While I typically fly American Airlines, every now and then, I do find myself on a Southwest Airlines flight. While I know some big changes have just started being made on Southwest Airlines including the cost of luggage being added and assigned seating starting soon, the "no frills" concept of Southwest Airlines for better fares and the "outrageously fun" service culture intrigue me with the airlines as a customer and observer. In fact, I typically have had very positive customer service experiences whether in advance on the phone or in person at the airport. After flying through Austin on American Airlines many times, this was my first time flying on Southwest Airlines with layovers in Austin. On the other hand, I have flown Southwest Airlines every now and then through other airports like Phoenix, California, Las Vegas, El Paso, or Albuquerque. While I have never tried the A-List program before, I have membership in CLEAR and Global Entry, which help me speed through security to get to the gates. I also find myself enjoying lounges through the American Express Platinum card and/or Priority Pass program. It also provides a travel incidental which I often will use with Southwest Airlines. Traveling has become more of a hobby and habit at the same time, and using Southwest Airlines and American Airlines as two the two airlines that are most convenient for me, I can accumulate points or miles quickly for future benefits. I actually recall learning about Southwest Airlines in my business school classes way back when as it was used as a regular case study, and I loved reading books about Herb Kelleher and the early days of Southwest Airlines and its service focus not only to customers but to employees as well. After all, if your employees aren't happy, your customers certainly won't be. I recall living the Southwest Airlines experience on holidays when everyone was treated to drinks, through fun and entertaining announcements by flight attendants, and when I was younger, even being invited to pass out the peanuts (in the days well before pretzels were instead distributed). As the recent Southwest Airlines changes are so new, the jury is still out on how I feel about them. For now, I can still expect great service, which is really what we're looking for (besides safe and timely flights). I look forward to continuing to check in with Southwest Airlines every now and then. read more

My husband and I decided to travel to Las Vegas and return to Austin using Southwest Airlines. My husband got our tickets online. He used the Southwest Airlines app to check to see if our flight was on time or delayed. This came in handy when planning on leaving home to the airport and when leaving the hotel to head to the airport. After getting to the Airport we walked up to the Southwest Area and walked to the Kiosks to get our bag tags and printed out our boarding passes. Then we walked over to the next available person at the bag check to check our bags. This person working there was friendly and helpful when we asked questions. After doing this we moved through security and headed to our gate. When we noticed our plane we got in line and listened to the attendant talking about boarding. In Austin the attendant was friendly. In Las Vegas the attendant was a little weird about boarding. She allowed multiple people that weren't called yet through to the plane but then announced in front of everyone on the speaker that she hadn't gotten to our number yet and then two seconds after announcing she called us over. It was rediculous. I don't understand why she used the microphone and why she didn't just talk to us because we were standing right next to her. After getting on the plane we found some seats and sat down. It wasn't a Full flight leaving Austin and luckily me and my husband didn't feel squished sitting in our row. However it was Full leaving Las Vegas and someone sat next to us. So I definitely felt squished on the flight from Las Vegas to Austin. During both flights the flight attendants did really good jobs and were friendly. We got two small snacks (mini pretzel braids and mini cinnamon graham crackers) and and a drink on the way there and on the way back. We heard the Pilot make announcements letting us know about the weather as well as possible turbulence. Overall the flights were okay. I prefer the less crowded planes so I don't feel so squished. The flight attendants on the planes were friendly, the snacks and drinks were a nice distraction during the flight and the plane was clean. read more

Southwest has a lot of flights out of AUS and we are often here for stopovers. Very dependable airline in general although sometimes there seem to be more delays here in AUS for late flights, just anecdotal though. Southwest will be a better option in AUS once they finish upgrading this airport with more lounges, better bathrooms, etc. read more

For my most recent trip to Austin, the arrival and departure went smoothly, with no delays. They were actually ahead of schedule. The seats were well-equipped, including USB port for charging. Legroom was adequate. Service was very good. I like the wifi service now provided free, using your account login and free rewards member subscription. I walked directly from the gate to the carousel, and my checked baggage was already there. I'm glad Southwest will finally switch to assigned seating later this month, so that check-in will no longer be a game of musical chairs for adults. read more

Well let's start at buying my ticket. They charge you for everything and they are not refundable like before. Then our plane was delayed and they board in groups. I was in seat 6F with my partner in seat 6E. We boarded in groups 5. So our bags had to be put in the overhead bins in the back of plane. Why load this way? Why not front to back that would make too much sense. Oh nice work making the bins smaller that helps no one. I will be canceling my swa credit card and flying any other airline from now on. I have not flown SWA since the early 2000's (I'm a loyal Delta Airlines customer), however, I'm glad this time around I didn't have enough points for a free flight with Delta, so I shopped around for a domestic flight from AUS to SAC. SWA had the lowest fare and I didn't have any luggage to check in, so no extra fees. I was pleasantly surprised to experience their ticketing system and boarding process. Delta needs to observe it and do the same thing! I LOVE that there isn't a class system, except for whoever wants a little extra leg room and/or priority boarding. Which I ended up adding so that I could be in the front in order to get a jump on a short connection. On the way back, the system automatically assigned our seats and gave us 2 middle seats, so that wasn't something I was looking forward to. but I'm so glad I asked, because my connection from San Diego back to Austin was packed, however, the gate agent was able to get us 2 seats together! even though we were in the very last boarding group, I was super impressed by how well they managed it all. Shout out to SWA on their process! Also, while I got to experience extra leg room in the front on my way to my destination, on the return I was in the very back row of a 737-800. I was expecting to be crammed in there, but for a standard economy seat all the way in the back - it was nice! It felt like a little more room than other airlines have for their basic economy cabins. Only downside was the in-flight wi-fi. It wasn't the best, and it's "BYOD" so don't expect your own screen. However, it was super easy to connect and view any of the pre-selected live TV stations, TV series, and movies with my phone. Just above my tray table, there was also a very handy compartment where I could place my phone horizontally so I can watch my shows. Clever design! Flight attendants were also very friendly and helpful. Great job SWA, you just got a new customer for domestic flights. If you ever go international, I'd probably say goodbye to Delta - as long as you stick with the "no class" system. I really hate how the other airlines make you walk through the first class cabins so you can see what you're missing out on and can't ever afford. SWA: y'all knocked it out of the park! alright, Southwest. it's real cute to advertise "free WiFi - and it doesn't even work. but what won't sit right with me is when i pay for it and it STILL DOESN'T work. my gf and i both had a lot of laptop work to get done which we planned to do on our way back to LA. literally impossible with the lag in service. i wasn't upset that the free WiFi didn't suffice. but even after paying for it, it didn't make a difference. if you can help it, don't waste your money. side note: their snacks have improved tremendously regarding ingredients and somewhat healthier alternatives. and they were delicious! read more

Absolutely unacceptable experience with Southwest Airlines I have never had such a chaotic and expensive travel experience in my life. I was supposed to fly from Austin to LAX on Southwest, and what should have been a simple flight turned into a complete nightmare. My flight was delayed FOUR separate times before it was ultimately cancelled and pushed back 24 hours. No clear communication, no real explanation, and no real support for passengers who were stranded. What made it even worse was the complete lack of customer care. Southwest offered no hotel compensation, no meaningful assistance, and no solutions for passengers stuck in Austin overnight. We were basically told to figure it out ourselves. After already wasting hours at the airport and watching delays pile up, my rescheduled Southwest flight got delayed AGAIN the next day. At that point I had completely lost trust that Southwest could get me to my destination at all. So what did I have to do? I had to spend $100 on an Uber for an hour-long ride to San Antonio, just to catch a $600 Delta flight that actually left on time. By the time this entire disaster was over, I had spent over $1,000 just to travel because Southwest couldn't deliver on a basic flight. No accountability. No support. No customer service. Just delays, cancellations, and passengers left scrambling. At this point, I would never recommend Southwest Airlines to anyone. The amount of time, stress, and money this airline cost me is unbelievable. There are plenty of other airlines that actually respect their customers' time and travel plans. I truly feel like I should be sending a sympathy card instead of writing this review. When I traveled a ton for work and was A List Select, I ALWAYS chose SWA. Price had to be reasonable but still....always. On this personal trip I got to see the one remaining thing about SWA that I still loved go away. Assigned seating it is! On my outbound trip my aisle seat got switched to a window....just like on ANY OTHER AIRLINE. Also on those legs they were numerous empty exit row seats I was told I couldn't move to because they were premium. Silly me....pretty much ANY OTHER AIRLINE will often let you do that. Seems to me they'd want an able bodied person in each exit row aisle. The preflight always discusses how the flight attendants won't be able to get to those aisles. So if there's an emergency, is someone who doesn't understand that supposed to know to open those four exits? I didn't like the two free bags fly free going away, and thought maybe knocking it down to one would be okay, but I'm not a money hungry stockholder. Speaking of money...how is it that even during COVID SWA made money...always did...but now they aren't? Instead of tossing out the baby with the bath water, maybe looking at what worked before would have been beneficial. Oh well. My days of only going to my Southwest app to book are gone. I'll just start going to booking.com or Travelocity and search for the best price. My days of complete allegiance to SWA are gone. I'd imagine Herb is spinning in his grave. Flew SWA on a recent trip. I actually had an amazing flight experience. From the moment I arrived, the check in kiosk was quick and easy. I quickly realized, you have to make sure you read the questions before responding to save time. The SWA counter rep was very courteous, and my "free checked" bag was below the weight limit. "Woohoo!" Practically no waiting for TSA screening at 9:30am on a Tuesday morning (UNBELIEVABLE). Make sure you put all your Bluetooth devices in your bin or you may loose it. Communications at the gate prior to boarding was loud and clear. I had a B-10 boarding position so there were still plenty of choice seats when we boarded. All and all it was a great experience. Flight crew was courteous, drinks and snacks were distributed swiftly. Only one screaming infant for about 10 mins. (Poor mom, she was so embarrassed) I hadn't flown SWA for a while and I had about $200 in flight credits. A friend mentioned how they called SWA, and the customer service rep assisted her and demonstrated how to purchase miles to save money. I did the same and I was thoroughly impressed with the service I received and the knowledge of the Cust/Svc representative. If you've never tried this option, I Invite you to check it out.
