I accidentally dropped my old school glass windowpane and the glass itself shattered, had two plastic corner attachment thingys broken, and the metal frame itself had one of the 4 sides break off. I had seen a facebook comment saying the did glass repair but due to the age and style of my window I had little hope... but Southside Hardware fixed it, good as new, for a fraction of the cost of some of the other window companies I had called. I loved this store when I lived in STL. My hood was Lindenwood Park, which is close to the South Hampton area. Being that close, made it easy to shop at Southside Hardware. When I was preparing my house for sale and getting the occupancy permit, the inspector had me get new fire and carbon dioxide alarms. Mine were connected to my alarm system and if the purchaser did not continue the service, they did not have alarms. Really didn't want the expense, but I understood. So off I went to Southside Hardware and as with any visit here, as soon as I entered an associate asked me what I was looking for. I explained my needs and he showed me what he had in stock. I was able to get 3 smoke detectors and also one combination with carbon dioxide. I was in and out of the store within 10 minutes, top customer service. Gotta love a mom and pop shop. I've been here a handful of times, and I've got to say Southside Hardware is one of my favorite hardware stores. The selection isn't as large as the big orange box, but the customer service is outstanding. Every time I've walked in, there was an employee that greeted me in less than minute asking me if they could help. The employees are very patient and very knowledgeable. They don't carry any lumber, and some items they only carry seasonally. I asked the employee how do I know what they carry, he said they carry just enough to keep the houses around from falling apart. Check this place out before you go to the big chains. This is a nice hardware store and their customer service cannot be beat. The sales associates will spend great amounts of time with the customers to make sure they get what they need. I was there on Monday evening after work to have 4 keys made. This was about $8. When I tested the keys at work the next day 2 of the 4 did not work. After I looked at them closely 1 for sure and probably both were made on the wrong blanks. I know that if I went back with my receipt they would take them back but I can't justify going out of my way to return these keys for a $4 refund. I had the keys made again on Tuesday near work and they worked. read more

Great people work there. I came in JUST before closing for some last minute plumbing issue during a project. I fully expected to sneak in, grab what I needed, pay, and sneak out without anyone really asking me about my project. Instead, the gentleman that greeted me asked me about my project, found another employee that was more experienced with plumbing. The other gentleman then asked me systematically about each part of the job, got a full picture of the issue, and helped me get the right things for the job and leave the fixture better than how I found it. NOTE TO THE OWNER: as another other reviewer have noted, there is an associate that open carries while working. He is a very helpful salesmen and always is very pleasant. I believe he has a legal right open carry. However, I agree that a sales person interacting with and in close proximity to the public should NOT open carry (at the very least, conceal the firearm or secure it someplace in the building during his or her shift). Firstly and most importantly, this can turn a situation where someone who is unarmed or carrying a knife could disarm the gentleman and become much more dangerous. This is a constant threat regardless of the person's believed ability or former training. Secondly, it obviously makes people nervous and turning people away. At least one person for sure Thirdly, the person carrying makes themselves a prime target for would be bad guys. Since he is the ONLY person openly carrying, he is the #1 target to ensure there aren't any problems. There is a good reason that you don't typically see this happening even in rural, privately owned businesses. It's because it's a really bad idea. read more

You've got anything related to a house or yard, just walk in and you'll be greeted by someone who wants to help and has the time to help. You can just tell them what you're thinking about and they'll listen and take you straight to what you need (whether you knew what you need or not). They'll offer their advice if you ask. Got more than one thing you need? They're happy to walk along with you and fill your basket with every item you need like a personal shopper. Also, unsure if they sell what you need because their shop is small? Just ask, I bet you that they actually have what you need in the back (eg. Propane, mulch, etc.). I LOVE shopping here! I have lived in the neighborhood for almost 4 years but have always shopped at Lowes on Loughborough. Lowes decided to stop stocking the line for my weed trimmer so I decided to check Southside Hardware. They had 3 in stock so I bought one. The people working were very nice, too, so I went back again a few months later for something else. Again, they were extremely nice, happy, and helpful. It's a small place and I'm sure there are some things that I wont be able to find there, but any small thing I have needed, they had; including, weed eater line, rust stripper, steam cleaner rental, and so many other things. Aside from the employees being extremely nice, the best thing about Southside hardware is that they stock a lot of items that are very specific to old south city houses. They have replacement glass door knobs, a variety of door mounted mail slot parts, among other things. This is the kind of stuff Lowes or Home Depot does not keep in stock that you can almost be sure to find at Southside Hardware. From now on, I'll be giving as much of my business to this hardware store as opposed to the big box places. read more

This is a wonderful, small hardware.store. located in south city, there is a private parking lot and the store.is always exceptionally clean. There are people waiting at the door to.greet you and offer assistance. Today, the greeter not only asked what I needed but walked me to the section and offered suggestions. When I selected my item, the same employee.jumped behind the counter and rang out my purchase. No waiting at all. Nice selection of products in a small store, but they do business in a way I find offensive. They seem to work from the assumption that I am going to try to steal or defraud them. For example, on my last visit, I ordered a ship-to store part online. When I came to pick it up, the clerk held up the small appliance gasket, which was shrink-wrapped on a card, and said that I would need to sign that I received the item in good condition. "Now this doesn't look like it's been burnt, does it?" What a bizarre question. I have never returned any item to them. I grew up in a family-run small retail business. This place is great! It really has an old-timey small town hardware store feel and smell when you walk in. They do repairs on screen doors and windows, and will also service yard equipment. The screen on my screen door was torn up and in pretty sad shape. I popped the frame out and they replaced the screen for a few bucks; it looked as good as new. I also an old black and decker hedge trimmer that they sharpened (I had no idea this was even an option!). It cut through my shrubs like butter when they were done! read more

My son and I came to the store looking for a glass for our front door. Lowe's doesn't cut glass and wasn't very helpful at all, and it took forever to get some assistance just to tell us that. Anyway, we were given a suggestion to come to a True Value store, so we did. This is the most down home old school hardware from back in the day that brings back memories, with the most informational , helpful and attentive customer service in THE WORLD!!!! They really made my son and I feel welcome and treated us like they have known us for years, the youngman even walked the glass out to our car, i really do appreciate their great service and friendliness. The history of a hardware store has long been buried in St Louis. They have killed one of the oldest heritages of St Louis. It shouldn't be a surprise by the way they have destroyed all the architecture of bygone years, that they would have no need for service and advise on the proper way to care and maintain a property.
