Tucked in a cute little area on the other side of the Soulard Market, we felt like we were going back in time walking into the building. We love supporting local, and they really have kept the charm of old St. Louis. It's adorable. BUT being cute doesn't matter if you suck. And they definitely don't suck. They have all the essentials you could need doing standard work on your house, plus more. I was super impressed with their selection for such a small hardware store. You're not going to find everything, but call and confirm because they are super quick to answer and help. And the service you get. Wow! Their employees are super knowledgeable and eager to help. They're super easy to talk to and don't make you feel inconvenient at all. Such a cool, local spot that we will definitely be supporting moving forward.

It's an absolutely fabulous local, old fashion hardware store near Soulard with all the essentials…read moreand much more that has been family run for generations with much of the same staff for a while who are beyond nice and helpful. The store and staff are amazing, and it just feels good going there. They're especially great bc I'm always clueless on what I need to do the job, so they help me figure it out, take me to what I need and explain how to use it. Beyond being a hardware store, they also offer rug doctor rentals and a variety of services you can't find many places, all of which come with the best quality and service: - key cutting way better than a big store - window screen building and repair - glass cutting (wish I knew this sooner bc I've been driving farther to get glass cut for side tables and such) - pipe threading and cutting - blade sharping - window glazing - lock mastering and rekeying and others I'm probably forgetting. It's way better than supporting a big box store! Shop local!

Old North Saint Louis

Outstanding old school real hardware store. Great service. Rare gem…read more Open Saturday. Cash only.

I love this place so much…read more I lived in Old North for five years, and was a frequent visitor to Marx during that time. I still stop by when I go back to visit St. Louis. There is no place like it. They still heat the place exclusively with the potbelly stove. They have hunting trophies and a roll-top desk. They still sell window glaze by the pound. Marx has been open since 1875, and has been in the same family most of that time. While their inventory may appear slightly underwhelming on the surface, ask them if you don't see what you need right away. They may have it in the back, or may have an alternate idea. If they don't have something, Steve can tell you another place on the Near North Side to get it. Several times during the renovation of my old house, I'd try going to Home Depot for something and discover that they do not sell things appropriate to an old house. So I'd go back to Marx and of course they knew where I could get an 36" chimney cap for an 1890s chimney, or where I could get push mower blades sharpened, or... really, you name it, and he always knew. Another experience I had with Marx while renovating my old house: Several times I would have a last-minute emergency, moments before Marx was set to close for the day, and I'd call over there and ask, "Hey, it's Claire on Sullivan Street. I just had a plumbing blowout. Can you please stay open for 10 more minutes so I can get the parts I need to have running water tonight?" and they would stay open for me. I don't know that they'd do that for casual customers they didn't know, but the fact that they do it at all says a lot. You can't build that kind of relationship or get that kind of service from Home Depot or Lowes. Steve even let me use the shop to film a scene of a short movie. Again, not a thing they'd necessarily do for any random person who walked in the door, but the fact that he did that says something about his generosity. Not only did he let our whole slew of actors-not-going-to-buy-anything traipse all over the store and change costumes, but he even volunteered to play the shopkeeper in our little movie. So, so nice. Worth noting briefly: Marx carries a handful of household goods. Detergent, toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, stuff like that. When I lived on the Near North Side without a car, I was mighty grateful to be able to get these things a couple of blocks from my house. They might be cheaper elsewhere, but not having to cross town and keeping the money in my community, are worth it. Obviously this is not an impartial review, but this place has gone above and beyond for me many times. Detroit (my new home) has many great hardware stores in its neighborhoods, but Marx is still my all-time favorite.

If you own a home in South City or Saint Louis in general, it's likely you'll need to repoint your…read morehouse at sometime. That being said, if you decide to do it yourself, head to F.W. Clemens! Otherwise, make sure your contractor or professional of choice uses products supplied from F.W. Clemens. For the love of god, do not buy mortar from Home Depot or Lowe's for your gorgeous Saint Louis home. The mortar they sell is too hard for our soft brick homes. This will lead to your bricks spalling and cracking. Go to F.W. Clemens and they will walk you through what you need. They are always friendly, and will explain what product is best for you by asking the right questions. They also have trowels, and raker joints available for fair price. A bag of historic mortar dry mix is about $5. They also sell plaster, and sealants for brick! This is your one-stop masonry shop. If it's your first time visiting, park on Cherokee and walk through the gates/warehouse and you'll see a sign for the "office" building. Once you walk in, you'll see the desk and they will be more than happy to help! They also load up your bags of heavy mortar in your car for you, which is awesome if you're not used to picking up 50lb+ compact bags mortar that are not the easiest to handle. One thing to note is since F.W. Clemens serves mostly masonry professionals, their hours reflect this. They open early and close early (7am-330pm), and they are only open Monday - Friday. I'm not docking their rating for this because that's silly, and they would probably lose money by staying open longer. They are a small operation that has been around for almost 150 years, and that's pretty cool consider our Saint Louis homes are that age or younger!

I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO F.W. CLEMENS!!!!!!! If you all knew how many companies I called to…read moredo what they simply dthey simply done you wouldn't believe me.. I've called a few companies before them and if the customer service didn't suck everything else went down here as well for such a simple task. The young lady who answered the phone BEAUTIFUL!!!! She listened to what I needed, guided me in the right direction and was very patient to the fact that I had NO KNOWLEDGE in what I was asking for. The way they fit me in in a timely fashion and the gentleman who delivered my order was here early in the morning before Jesus woke up. He unloaded the rock and was so professional, polite and helpful. This company really puts those 2 other companies to shame and I thank them for their professionalism, they're customer service and they're great product. Stay great!!!! Reach out to this company, you will not be disappointed. They are PHENOMENAL from the beginning to the end!!! Thank you guys
