Build your own salmon bowl and tuna bowl
Anna F.

My 2 scoop salmon bowl with zoodles and yuzu sauce was delicious, filling, and refreshing. This is one of the few places that has multiple meals I can eat while on the low FODMAP diet. If you are on the same diet I recommend these ingredients: salmon, seaweed salad, yuzu sauce, pineapple, radish, carrot, cucumber, zoodles, togarashi, and furikake. It is so crunchy and bright. The salmon was definitely fresh. I got a bad vibe however from the posted paper notice saying they were adding an 8% service charge to all orders due to increased costs. I'm not sure what the reason would be not to just change the menu prices on their digital board; the only conclusion I could think of was they wanted to still get people to start ordering by seeing the low prices, or that they didn't want to look like they had higher prices than other restaurants. This seems deceitful and I'm confused why they are the only raw fish-centered place I've seen doing something like this. Perhaps this is only very temporary. If there's more of an explanation I'd love to know more.

I love, love, love Southfin. I'd never had poké before and Southfin was the first place that I tried it years ago; I've been a fan ever since. It was my go-to spot for lunch on days when I need something quick and filling, but not too heavy. Now it's one of my must stop spots whenever I'm in town visiting family. The ingredients are always fresh and the staff is super kind and helpful. You can choose from one of the specialty bowls or build your own. No matter which option you choose, you get to pick your base (purple or white rice, mixed greens, sweet potato or zucchini noodles) and either two or three scoops of protein (tuna, salmon, shrimp, chicken, tempeh, crawfish, or octopus). My favorite is the spicy salmon salmon. It's sweet and spicy and crunchy with lots of yummy veggies (I like to add carrots and avocado when I'm feeling like a heartier meal). The honey sriracha and miso dressing work so good together and make the perfect sauce to accompany the salmon. I'm usually a sweet potato noodles type of gal, but I tried the purple rice recently and I dig it. I enjoyed that I got a better base to topping ratio with the rice; I always end up eating most of the noodles first and am left with lots of toppings.

SO DELICIOUS! the workers were so kind as they walked me through the ordering process. I was super quick in and out. The inside is precious!! The decorations and set up is top tier. The fish is fresh and all the toppings look delicious! No complaints

2 scoop with tuna and salmon, with zoodles base. The zoodles were too skinny and I could barely even find them in my bowl

Ingredients seem fresh, but they have the saddest zoodles. The zoodles were very skinny and wet. I almost couldn't even find them in my bowl! I got the two scoop protein with raw tuna and salmon and those were fresh. If only the zoodles had more life to them. Covid update: they do allow dine in

Classic - 2 Scoops in the right corner with added mango, seaweed salad, and edamame

I LOVE Southfin's Poké bowls! I ordered the Classic Poké Bowl with zoodles as my base. I then added mango, edamame, and seaweed salad--it was so good! This was my first time at this location, and it was a pretty good experience! However, they didn't look open (a bunch of chairs were stacked on top of tables in the middle of the day with only one light on), so we almost drove away.

The Luau Bowl, a mighty Poke indeed.

This original location of Southfin introduced me to the Hawaiian Poké Bowl! A Poké is a easy to enjoy dish that consists of a base, a protein, and veggies with sauces and seasonings on top. The bases range from rices and noodles to greens. The proteins most bowls involve are sushi grade fish, but there is also chicken for those who want something cooked instead. Then the veggies include a wide assortment of options. If this seems like too many choices, don't panic! There are a number of pre-planned options you can order like the Classic, the Luau, the Wasabi, the Chicken and the Spicy Salmon. Southfin maximizes the local ingredients. One of my favorites is the purple rice. This is a variety developed and grown here in Louisiana, and it is my favorite base. With a drink, your bowl becomes a complete meal. So drop in and try something new, light, and heathy! They are now serving Hawaiian Shaved Ices for desert, which is a very different thing than a snow cone. These magnificent desserts are like actual snow, topped with a variety of sweet things. They can certainly satisfy your sweet tooth, and cool you off as well.

Southfin is probably the best poke I have had in Baton Rouge. The ingredients are so fresh and delicious you really can't go wrong! When COVID began they switched to delivery or pickup only and the day after I got a personal text from the owner (got number from ordering system) thanking me for supporting local during a trying time. I have never been disappointed and LOVE the healthy zoodle option personally! I an not a zoodle person but for me, it works in poke perfectly!

Spicy Salmon-it was a great choice and I really enjoyed it. Nice big portion as well.

The first time eating Poke outside my beloved California and I've got to say I was well pleased with this place. It was clean, bright, and the food was very good. This pace is off very busy street and easily missed if you're not paying attention. Decor-ship/aquatic decor with ship steering wheels and netting adorn the walls along with their merchandise for sale. They have outside patio for outdoor dining as well. Service-was good, cant say I was greeted with a smile but hey they served me my food and took my form of payment. A smile would have been nice, not gonna lie. Food-I ordered the spicy salmon with brown rice and zucchini noodle base. It was pretty good, I loved the amount of spice on salmon(I still added Sriracha). All the toppings were perfect and I specially enjoyed the mango and avocado. I will definitely come back next time I'm in the area.

This build your own bowl place has a college vibe, and is a bit less pricey than some others of its ilk. It doesn't offer quite as much either, but still certainly wasn't bad. Their website claims it combines the Hawaiian poke bowl with "traditions of the Gulf South", but I'm quite confused as to what makes it "southern". Throw me a red beans and rice poke bowl, or some fried okra or a remoulade sauce and we'll talk. What it does have, unlike the other Poke Bowl places that have sprouted up all over, is tempeh instead of tofu for its vegetarian option, which I rather like. I never have much success preparing tempeh on my own, but they did a decent job of it. A combination of purple rice with a sauce and various toppings made for a decent bowl, albeit not a large one. There are many premium toppings for an extra charge, but the basic selection was not as good as I've had elsewhere, and the atmosphere here was pretty basic as well, just a regular strip mall fast food place, unlike some of the highbrow poke bowl spots in New Orleans. So at the end of the day, it's fine enough, but didn't blow me away.

Luau Bowl (added avocado and crab salad)

Southfin Southern Poké is a excellent choice if you are looking for some really fresh seafood. My go-to is the Luau Bowl. The fresh tuna is extremely tender and the shrimp give the bowl a great contrasting texture. I really enjoy the sweet mangos and crunch of the macadamia nuts but almost always add advocado for extra flavor. Since the onset of COVID, I miss going into Southfin because the restaurant has a great pacific vibe and is very clean. They also have really tasty rice crispy treat bites that I can never pass up! Southfin has a decent selection of beer and wine inside if you re interested in partaking in an adult beverage while dining. Definitely recommend popping into Southfin Southern Poké if you haven't already done so, it's a really great location in Baton Rouge.

Spicy Salmon Bowl!

I've only been here twice, but both times were really just okay. I've been to tons of poké places, and all of them in my opinion have been better than Southfin. I don't find Southfin's poké to have very much flavor and there aren't as many topping options as some of the other places I've been to. It's also a bit more expensive than other places and the last time I came here the service was absolutely horrible. The girl who was helping me was so rude and was rushing me the entire time. On top of that, the fish and vegetable toppings were prepared horribly. I had HUGE chunks of fish and onions, like they didn't even bother to chop them up at all. It makes me wish there were more places to get poké in BR because for me, Southfin doesn't hit the spot.

Spicy salmon bowl with a side of Holy Roller
Jeanne P.

I've been really eager to get over here to try Southfin in person, and it certainly did not disappoint! The atmosphere is bright and light, carefree much like the Hawaii islands. I was craving poke, and they certainly know how to make it well. I went back and forth on building my own bowl, but I decided to try one of theirs. I chose the spicy salmon with purple rice base. Thinking back, i would get the zucchini noodles instead, but next time, it's a go! The regular bowl was very filling and satisfying. The spiciness is there, and honestly, there was just a little too much sauce in there that it overpowered the salmon. I would have liked the salmon flavor to be a little more prevalent. The staff was super friendly and made recommendations. The line moved quickly. They even have a delightful craft beer selection. I can't wait to go back and try something else, maybe even throw together my own creation! This poke is okay! (get it....see what I did there!?) Just go get some!

I've always wanted to try this place and finally had the chance to. I went in at 10:30am as soon as they opened. I got the cove platter with the 3 meats. I chose chicken katsu, chicken teriyaki, and kalbi. I asked for brown rice instead of white and it came with a side of macaroni salad. The chicken katsu was very well fried. Very crunchy still since I made the trip to work and was able to still enjoy that crunch. The kalbi was okay it was marinated from what I could tell but I wasn't getting too much flavor from the meat. It was tender but it didn't have those grill marks or the char I was looking for. The chicken Teriyaki was a bit on the drier side for me. I was expecting the chicken to be in a sauce but it wasn't. It also didn't have that typical teriyaki flavor. They did put a sauce on the side im not sure what it was. It didn't stick to the chicken and the rice soaked it all up. The macaroni salad was a disappointment it was on the dry side with just egg and maybe a relish of some sort but that was it. I had to add a salt and pepper but still it was dry. The dumplings were the best thing, it comes with a tasty sweet chili sauce. The kimchi appeared to be old and didn't have flavor at all I didn't eat it. Unfortunately I may not be back.

We ordered the two meat plate (pork katsu and kalbi), spam musubi and the bulgogi burger. Kalbi was tender and had a good flavor, but meat was very thin. Pork katsu was ok - also very thin, but fried crisp on outside. Musubi was ok - a little dry. Burger was interesting. Not bad but probably wouldn't order again. The meat itself was marinated and tasted good. Again, the place was clean and the owners are very friendly and the food was good.

In a recent visit, my friend had them make her a blackened shrimp and blackened alligator plate as her combo and I was jealous! I recently tried their BBQ as I usually get seafood and was very pleasantly surprised. The ribs were really outstanding. While the main courses are always the star of the show, their sides need to be discussed as well. My favorite is probably the cabbage which is sautéd till crisp tender. The beans and rice could be a main course, but are excellent as sides. Cornbread tops off the meal.

The redfish was flaky, fresh, and beautifully seasoned with a proper blackened crust. It was absolutely drenched in a rich lemon butter sauce that tied everything together perfectly. The corn maque choux was creamy, flavorful, and comforting without overpowering the fish. Even the salad tasted fresh and balanced the richness of the entrée well. The restaurant was PACKED when I arrived around noon on a Tuesday, which I later learned was likely because they were serving birria tacos that day. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of crowded restaurants, but honestly, the amount of traffic speaks for itself. People clearly come here because the food is worth it. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, and the restaurant itself was clean... floors, tables, everything looked well maintained despite how busy it was. Service was excellent. My server was attentive without hovering, efficient without making me feel rushed, and my food came out surprisingly fast considering how busy the restaurant was. Drinks were handled well too ...bottled sodas available, and free refills on tea and lemonade. They were helpful with their suggestions and very friendly. I think the idea is really good. The food truck situated itself on the cusp of Tigerland, appealing to the droves of college students who needed something to "soak up the liquids." I didn't catch the location there, and honestly, I forgot where exactly I caught it the first time. The second time was over near the old Caiterie location, for those of you who know that throwback. I think I paid some where around $8-9 dollars for the Mac and Cheezy the first time I went. For that, it was....okay enough. There was not a huge flavor to it, and bread was a bit too soggy. I had to find a fork and knife to eat it. The next time, I got just a basic type of grilled cheese. I can't remember the price but it was pretty much "okay." I can see why the college kids will eat it up, especially if maybe using a method of payment from an allowance or "free money" they didn't earn. Otherwise, I would recommend just going to their dorm or apartment and making something themselves. Since my last visit, they have opened a brick and mortar spot in the old Soulshine location by LSU. That's probably a good idea so they can grow. Now, I did see on their social media for the Masters a year or so back, they had a pimento cheese special - selling pimento cheese sandwiches, as is a staple of the golf tournament. Great idea right? Ethically, no, as the sandwiches were handmade at another small business, purchased by The Big Cheezy, and then up-charged and sold with no nod to the business who made them. That's not how you do small business, guys. That's shady and dishonest, and it will come back to bite you 10 fold in some way. I have no doubt that the small bakery that made the sandwiches would have partnered with your business as she likes to support others, and wants local businesses to succeed. So, I'm sure they will continue to feed the droves of kids by campus who need some buttery bread to soak up their Saturday nights, but I will pass.

Great food, even better staff! So thankful they have a brick and mortar now and not just a food…read moretruck #growth
