The city of Conyers was holding their annual Fall Festival where various vendors from the metro area come to showcase arts and crafts, food, entertainment, etc. It's also an opportunity for the businesses permanently housed on those streets to promote their items. Most of those businesses had a staffer stationed outside with samples or displays, and had thick crowds around each. The Sweet Treat Depot had a single staffer packaging roasted nuts, and she was a bit reserved but not unfriendly. She offered my family and I a sample of one nut each, and we decided to purchase the full item (which had to be done inside the store). She told us that they were having a special on them as well. Inside, the store was completely empty of customers, which should have been the first red flag. Why is every other business packed with customers on a sunny Saturday afternoon during a festival except yours? Anyway, we walk to the register towards the back and see a slovenly man in a dirty white t-shirt sitting down behind the counter. He acknowledged us, coughed and wiped his mouth with his hand, and then started moving a few food items behind the counter with the same germ-ridden hand. One of my family members wanted to add one of the desserts behind the counter to her order, and I leaned over and whispered to her that not only did the guy look completely unkempt, but he was touching food with the same filthy hand he just wiped his mouth with. He starts ringing the previously mentioned roasted nuts up on the register, which has a customer-facing screen and an employee-facing screen. Once the total was tallied, one of the family members paying first asked him if the special mentioned by the staffer outside would be applied. He said "yeah you don't see it?" She was kind of taken aback and told him that it wasn't viewable on the customer-facing side, to which he replied "well it's on there". The rest of us were a bit silent at this point, realizing this interaction was going south fast. She began counting the money out of her wallet and told him that she wasn't trying to be rude, but maybe his side of the screen showed something different than her side. He then whipped the screen around to face her and (I kid you not) said "can you count?! It's right there!" And then he actually moved his hand towards her face and started counting on his fingers like he was speaking to a slow child instead of a woman in her 70s. She looked like she was on the verge of tears and was prepared to just pay the amount she saw on the screen...that is until I intervened. I said, try counting on your pudgy fingers and talking slowly to me and see what happens. He started sputtering and said he was just trying to make her understand. I said you're not going to MAKE her do anything. He was fine with denigrating a little old woman but got flustered when a young 6'5" man got in front of him. I told our whole group to leave everything they planned to buy right on that counter and to leave. We walked right next door to The SUGAR Dessert Bar while I tried to reassure my family member that she did nothing wrong and it was the boorish employee's fault. This place was the complete opposite, well lit and full of customers and friendly employees. And they had a stand set up outside that had a line of patrons waiting to support them. Was happy to spend our money with them, and even happier to share with them AND the other customers about the lousy experience with Sweet Treats. I'll never step foot in there again much less waste a dime of my money on them. Hopefully the barren shop means their on the way out.
