The two other reviews (I'm surprised there aren't more) are spot-on accurate. This place is worth shaping your hiking trip around. I had the tastiest gazpacho ever - no exaggeration. It had chunks of roasted garlic and lots of zest without being overbearing. I don't think it's normally on the menu but they're bound to have other specials. The place itself is something you trip over - we almost missed it while driving through the countryside with the dog. Make sure to sit outside on the charming deck and soak up some sun. We also had tasty sammies and milkshakes that were beyond TDF. Make sure to hitch your train to this caboose 'cause you can't go wrong. (Sorry, I had to make that joke.)

I'm riding a bike to every coffee shop in America, so parts of my review will reflect that perspective! It is on on the downtown strip which as a bicyclist is my favorite kind of coffee stop. Easy to bike to and I enjoy looking around at old buildings and looking for murals. This town has both and it looks like there is some effort to beautify (even more) going on It has outdoor seating, which is also a plus, as I like to be outdoors as much as possible and watch the world go by. A great place to do it here- locals are curious and friendly and had some nice chats with local old timers about local history/sights etc The server was super nice. Anybody who pats a shoulder and calls me sweetie is just alright in my book Interior feel was old fashioned homey. Very comfortable and lots of things to look at 5.0 stars for this fine little stop in Rutledge, Georgia If I ever roll through here again, will definitely stop in

Quaint place. Is actually more than just the caboose..caboose is attached to a building/dining room. The staff are friendly but there is definitely a sense that locals are the common patrons here...I am not a local. Locals floated in and out and everyone seemed to know one another by first name. Food is good and portions are ample. The prices are low relative to city locals and chains. Dining area is pretty eclectic with various table and chair styles as well as an old time feel. I am a vegetarian so it was nice to find some fare that met my needs. It looks on out the main intersection of Rutledge...a small, two block row of shops and offices. Hard Labor Creek State Park is within 3 miles so this is a nearby eatery on the way to/from the nearby park. Recommended.

    Quaint.

Even though we usually sit down and enjoy a meal together, we just decided to get something quick. The location is super easy to get to and I've been in the vicinity too many times at Costco Business center and didn't even know this place even existed. Anyways, upon walking in.... The walls, furniture, and everything you can think of has someone's name or nickname written on it. They even began to write on the TV and the owners had to put a sign up saying not to write on the tv. I definitely laughed at that because who in their right mind would write on a tv, buuuuut they did smh. There are two different windows, one to order and one to pick up. I went to the order window and decided upon a steak and cheese with just mayo and lettuce and also an Italian. From the reviews I couldn't decide between the two so I got both lol. And I also got a slice of chocolate cake. The young man who took my order was very nice and we even laughed about how much I ordered.... For myself lol. While waiting for our food, we took a walk over to Burlington. We stayed over there for maybe 10-15mins and then walked back. Our orders were done probably about 5mins after we got back, if that. I sped all the way home because I could just smellllll my steak and cheese through the wrappings lol. Steak and cheese was really good. I would have preferred more meat though and kinda was expecting more because of how big the sandwich was. Like a lot more. But it was seasoned wellll. The Italian on the other hand was extremely salty. I was surprised because everyone talked about how good it was, but the saltiness was too much for me. I ate half of a half and had to discard the rest because I could stand the saltiness. I did eat the whole steak and cheese though. That chocolate cake was bomb though. As someone who bakes cakes all the time, it was nice and moist. It was in the fridge there but it didn't taste refrigerated at alllll. I wish I had gotten two of them instead of the Italian sub, but hey you live and you learn.

So let's start with the good: The service was top notch and the restaurant was super clean! The decor is definitely hip and I love to see places like this popping up in small towns. Our server, and likely the owner or at least one of, was extremely attentive, anticipating our needs and checking to ensure we were all set. Great experience in that regard. Now the food: As far as food goes it was good and the prices weren't bad, at least going rate for bbq joints these days. As far as bbq, there is better out there. We don't live in the area so we wouldn't be regulars anyway. If we did live in the area, I'd eat there again but as far as bbq goes, it's not my first choice. The ribs were good. The brisket was a bit dry and a lean cut rather than the fatty cut we asked for. The collards could use a bit of vinegar/pepper sauce, not sure, just missing something to make them hit. The Mac n cheese, I think maybe they were trying for a gourmet flair with some specialty cheeses, not sure. Had I expected that, like something in the description on the menu, maybe I would've enjoyed it more. I'm open to new and fresh spins on classics, but I was expecting traditional baked mac-n-cheese. The Brunswick stew was good but a bit flat on flavor. I added salt. The baked beans... they actually did hit. I can certainly give em that one. The kiddos got chicken tenders and fries and while I didn't try them they did look good. The tenders looked like they would make a delicious sandwich too. The sweet tea was perfection. Overall lunch was good and I do wish the restaurant well. I just think they have a bit of room for improvement.

We've eaten here enough times that it feels less like a restaurant visit and more like part of the tradition. Tonight I ordered the Blue Plate Special with hamburger steak smothered in grilled onions, collard greens, green beans, cornbread, and a big bowl of Brunswick stew. My unsweet tea stayed filled thanks to Rhonda, who was serving tables while also managing the restaurant. We learned that Hot Rod's started the evening with three servers scheduled. Business was slow, so one server was sent home. Naturally, that's when things picked up. Even so, Rhonda and the remaining server kept everything moving smoothly, and we never felt neglected during our visit. The Brunswick stew was excellent and gave us an unexpected opportunity for comparison. Earlier in the day we had Brunswick stew at Fresh Air Bar-B-Que. Hot Rod's version was chunkier, with larger pieces of meat, more noticeable vegetables, and a slight kick of spice. The Fresh Air version was smoother and more finely blended. Both were excellent, but they were definitely different styles. The hamburger steak was flavorful, the green beans and collard greens tasted like proper Southern vegetables, and when the Texas Pete hit the table there was only one thing to say: "My man, Texas Pete goes on the collards." Then came the surprise ending. We learned that peach cobbler was half price today. Unfortunately, they were out. Or so we thought. A fresh cobbler was still in the oven. For the next several minutes, the suspense reached maximum peach. Finally, the cobbler emerged from the kitchen and was served à la mode. The French gave it a classy name. The South perfected the application. Warm peaches, a buttery cobbler topping, and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream that immediately melted with a purpose made for the perfect ending to the meal. It was absolutely worth the wait. Hot Rod's continues to be one of our favorite stops in Social Circle, and after another great meal, I have no doubt we'll be back again the next time we're in town. There was no break in my serving and it was not a traditional B&T. After giving the concise menu a look, I opted for the Fish and chips and a side of their Gouda and mac. Fish and Chips, Haddock, whole potato wedges tartar and ketchup with a lemon wedge. The fish was prepared very well, the potatoes like home style and the mac and cheese very good, rich creamy and tasty. The Haddock was a nice large filet, breaded lightly and tender. A good meal.
