So let's start with the good: The service was top notch and the restaurant was super clean! The decor is definitely hip and I love to see places like this popping up in small towns. Now the food: As far as food goes it was good and the prices weren't bad, at least going rate for bbq joints these days. As far as bbq, there is better out there. We don't live in the area so we wouldn't be regulars anyway. If we did live in the area, I'd eat there again but as far as bbq goes, it's not my first choice. The ribs were good. The brisket was a bit dry and a lean cut rather than the fatty cut we asked for. The collards could use a bit of vinegar/pepper sauce, not sure, just missing something to make them hit. The Mac n cheese, I think maybe they were trying for a gourmet flair with some specialty cheeses, not sure. Had I expected that, like something in the description on the menu, maybe I would've enjoyed it more. I'm open to new and fresh spins on classics, but I was expecting traditional baked mac-n-cheese. The Brunswick stew was good but a bit flat on flavor. I added salt. The baked beans... they actually did hit. I can certainly give em that one. The kiddos got chicken tenders and fries and while I didn't try them they did look good. The tenders looked like they would make a delicious sandwich too. The sweet tea was perfection. My unsweet tea stayed filled thanks to Rhonda, who was serving tables while also managing the restaurant. We learned that Hot Rod's started the evening with three servers scheduled. Business was slow, so one server was sent home. Naturally, that's when things picked up. Even so, Rhonda and the remaining server kept everything moving smoothly, and we never felt neglected during our visit. The Brunswick stew was excellent and gave us an unexpected opportunity for comparison. Earlier in the day we had Brunswick stew at Fresh Air Bar-B-Que. Hot Rod's version was chunkier, with larger pieces of meat, more noticeable vegetables, and a slight kick of spice. The Fresh Air version was smoother and more finely blended. Both were excellent, but they were definitely different styles. The hamburger steak was flavorful, the green beans and collard greens tasted like proper Southern vegetables, and when the Texas Pete hit the table there was only one thing to say: "My man, Texas Pete goes on the collards." Then came the surprise ending. We learned that peach cobbler was half price today. Unfortunately, they were out. Or so we thought. A fresh cobbler was still in the oven. For the next several minutes, the suspense reached maximum peach. Finally, the cobbler emerged from the kitchen and was served à la mode. The French gave it a classy name. The South perfected the application. Warm peaches, a buttery cobbler topping, and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream that immediately melted with a purpose made for the perfect ending to the meal. It was absolutely worth the wait. Hot Rod's continues to be one of our favorite stops in Social Circle, and after another great meal, I have no doubt we'll be back again the next time we're in town. Don't make the mistake I did and order a la carte. Go for the tasting menu. They say that the difference is that the a la carte portions are bigger, but I didn't really find that to be the case. The tasting menu is more of a prix-fixe menu as the portions are pretty close to full-sized if not actually full-sized. I mentioned the mixology earlier, and they really know their stuff in that area. Just asking for a classic cocktail, they asked the questions that most bartenders wouldn't think to ask.
