This restaurant was just when we were there. The Sunday brunch crowd meant a line, having to wait for tables and busy restaurant. We waited by the door for about 10 mins before a table opened up. Servuce were fast and staff friendly. Our food took a little longer to come understandable since it was crowded. Kudos to kitchen. I ordered a chicken Caesar wrap with a side of fries. My toasted spinach wrap was slightly crispy, the Caesar filling was tasty, not drenched with dressing and the fries were hot and crispy. All tasted perfect. I always prefer a lighter hand on salt and this place did it perfectly. My dish was too much for me and took half the wrap home My husband's crispy chicken sandwich with side salad was huge too. He thought it was good, not blown away but good. Definitely a place to come again when we swing by this little cute city of Madison. read more

Ate lunch here Saturday for first time. I had the classic breakfast plate. My eggs (scrambled with cheese) were good as were the potatoes. The bacon tasted good but was a tiny bit overdone. The biscuit was too done (very crunchy outside, almost couldn't bite through it). But I would return & try the food again. Maybe just an off day for the kitchen. However, our server seemed quite anxious to get rid of us, even though they had open tables. She even cleared my friend's plate when she said she wasn't yet finished. So she kind of ruined the lunch a bit for some old friends trying to catch up. We actually left & went elsewhere due to her rushing us out the door. Super CA YUTE place! Back to the Future vibes, we loved our brunch today! Place is super clean, retro decor. Server was great, efficient and friendly. Menu has something for everyone. We had the Fried Green Tomato BLT with a side salad, and the breakfast special. Crisp bacon, tasty home fries, big portions. Came in with my wife for lunch, about 30 minutes before closing at 3 pm. We had eaten at the place before it moved and liked it. Nobody else was in the place - bad sign? We ordered a Cobb salad and an omelette. 25 minutes later still no food - even after having signaling the waitress across the room and 3 or 4 staff looking at us the whole time - saying nothing. As we were leaving at just 30 minutes the waitress said they had forgotten to place the order. When I ran back to get the sunglasses I left on the table, they wanted to know if Id take it to go. This place had been open less than two weeks when our group of four arrived a little before 11am on a Sunday morning. The wait was short, maybe 10 minutes or so. Let me start by saying the place is adorable! It is homey, welcoming, and comfortable! I opted for the french toast, which is generally served with maple syrup and whipped topping. I opted for some butter, powder sugar and a bit of maple syrup. The french toast was an entire plate-sized portion and very tasty. The bread was thick, a brioche bread perhaps. The only other item that came with my meal was an orange slice. I would have preferred to have a smaller bread slice and perhaps sausage or bacon. I felt my breakfast was not quite complete. That being said, this place is great! It's very popular. The food is good. Highly recommend. Conveniently located in downtown Madison, behind the post office building. read more

One of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had. So glad this place is here. Pretty affordable, really delicious, and offers something else you can't find in this area. Mid century diner vibe with southern-tinged breakfast and lunch. Fries are good with the sandwiches but you can also ask for a salad, which is surprisingly satisfying. I will never eat here again. The place was swarming with flies inside. The chef was killing them with an insect killing gun and wiping the dead flies off the window sill with the same gloves he was preparing the food. The lady at the table next to us actually asked the waitress to tell the chef to change his gloves. We had breakfast and the food was cold. The grits bowl was hot but the grits were cold which leads me to believe it was just heated in the microwave. The omelet does not have the ingredients cooked into the eggs. The eggs are cooked separately and just folded over the cold ingredients. Very expensive for what you get. read more

If you go with the expectation of slow service (which the hostess even told us), you'll be more forgiving of the fact it takes a really long time to get your food. Breakfast foods are great - French toast with the lemon curd on the side was amazing. Neighboring patron's breakfasts looked good. But....the burger was very disappointing. It's way overpriced with a patty so tiny. Add pimento cheese and bacon and the cost of the $17 burger really stings when you lift the bun to reveal a silver-dollar size patty that was probably frozen. Service was okay - friendly, but left some drinks glasses empty. This place needs to solve a few problems and they'll be firing on all cylinders. read more

I was so excited about visiting this place after reading an article. What a disappointment! First of all, what self-respecting Southern restaurant doesn't make their own iced tea? We ordered tea and received "tea", which was really water. After telling our waitress, she commented that "it comes out of a gun" do she couldn't do anything about it. So we drank water. My friend chicken Caesar wrap was so overdressed the whole thing was dripping with dressing. That took care of any crispness that could have come from the fried chicken. And the menu was very limited as compared to what I saw online. No chicken salad or tuna salad. Would never go back. So disappointed! read more

Sorry, I really wanted to like this spot but it's a definite no for me. I'll start positive, the place is absolutely adorable and cozy. The over medium eggs were cooked well. It's all downhill after that. The food was bland and they apparently have a smaller breakfast menu on the weekend, so don't expect what you see hanging on the menu in the window. The service was not great (small water glass and the server never came back to refill). The sausage was room temp so I couldn't really tell if it was cooked properly. Hopefully they will make some improvements. I'll stay tuned for other reviews in the future. read more

Went for lunch, friend got veggie plalate which she said was so salty she could not hardly eat. I got hamburger which turned out to be a knock off Bubba burger. seemed precooked days ago and toppings were not cut so you could eat them. Maybe breakfast is better but I wont ever know. read more

Great location, okay service/food. I spent a long time standing by the wait to be seated sign. Waitresses passed me by several times never acknowledging me. A simple someone will be with you, would have been nice. Finally I was seated by the hostess, service picked up after this point. The same waitress that ignored me took my order quickly once I was sat and the food didn't take long. I had a veggie omelette, it was okay. We came on Friday morning between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., which is just in the changeover between breakfast and lunch, so it was not crowded. We were interested in getting breakfast. First the good. The food was above average but some caveats need to be mentioned. We had two complaints, my wife and I, the first being no bread of any kind with the omelette. There were potatoes which were quite good but this was not strange oversight considering the price. I chose to have the buttermilk pancakes. What I got was quite good but after spending $10.99 for two medium size pancakes about 3/8 of an inch thick each, this was surprisingly and unacceptably stingy, again considering we're spending $11 on this. For this price one would expect a stack of four fluffy pancakes not two flat pancakes. The coffee was okay, not bad, not great. Now for the service and dining experience. The service was non-engaged and the servers seemed to be more interested in talking between themselves and arguing, than serving us. Maybe they were switching over to lunch. Of the two days we spent in Madison, Betty Gene's was the worst dining experience we had. Two stars. read more

We went to Betty Gene's for the first time this Sunday for brunch. The interior is very cool. It was busy but not packed and the service was great. Our waiter was attentive and friendly and checked on us often. We ordered the chicken sandwich and fries, biscuits and gravy and the lemon curd pancakes with blueberries. The chicken sandwich was absolutely delicious, one of the best I've ever had (I saw another review which claimed that and was skeptical, but it's seriously awesome!) The pancakes themselves were good and even better with the toppings. Good classic biscuits and gravy. All in all, I'm glad Madison has a good new breakfast spot. My only problem is that if I ever eat there by myself I don't think I'll be able to choose between the pancakes and chicken sandwich read more

Cute place. Went there with friends twice. Both times the server announced they were out of coffee. That was disappointing as it is cold out and people want coffee. Service was okay. No one asked us if we needed refills or checked in us after putting our food down. The prices are rather high BUT the most ridiculous pricing was for a "bowl of soup" for $12! My friend ordered it thinking it would be a huge bowl of homemade amazing soup. It's called "pulled chicken" soup. I promise there were 2 tiny cubes of chicken in the entire bowl. We saw on advertisements that they served breakfast and lunch every day and ASSUMED we could get breakfast all day but breakfast was over already. Bummer, but that was our fault for not understanding so I'm just giving a heads up. We arrived & were given the option of eating inside or outside by the manager. We chose outside & waited while they cleaned a table. And waited and waited and waited while it sat clean. Then a server ran by and said we could go sit down so we did, but she never came back. I went inside and asked the same manager who greeted us if we could get waited on and he asked "were you actually seated out there or did you just sit without asking", I answered that he was the one who cleaned the table for us and showed us the outdoor table. Strange. He just said ok someone will be there soon and hurried away. Once we found the server again and ordered, we waited so long for our food. We watched everyone arrive after us get their food before us, pay, and leave before we even got any food. All of our orders were wrong when they arrived and when we asked that they be fixed they came back wrong again. 3 sandwiches took almost 2 hours. No one cared and the manager left to take care of another restaurant while we just sat there. When he came back he didn't even acknowledge that we were still sitting there with no food. I realize this place is new so we expected small issues, but this was truly one of the weirdest experiences and the food was just ok. The atmosphere is adorable inside they did a great job with the decor. I just wish they had more to offer in terms of service and food options. When we were leaving, there was only a few other patrons inside the restaurant & it was very empty. A gentleman sitting outside with a small group was pretty upset at the lack of service and said to us, as we were leaving, that he should have gone somewhere else, & had to be back in the office in a half hour. We walked in and thought it was a cute, quaint little place. The decor is nice, but most everything not so much. Our server was pleasant, but she seemed overwhelmed. We put our order in and while waiting for our meal, the table next to us got their food. The kitchen totally made one's meal entirely wrong. Ok, hoping that was a fluke. It being our first time, we ordered country fried steak with mashed potatoes and a side salad, a burger with pimento cheese and bacon with fries and a biscuit with sausage gravy to share. The country fried steak was very small and bland. Mashed potatoes were also needing seasoning. The biscuit and "sausage " gravy... was lacking...sausage. We found only a few tiny pieces in it, but there were mushrooms in it? Very odd! The biscuit was nice though. The burger was very small and seemed to be previously frozen. I took my first bite, and it was extremely cold. Finally got the servers attention, and sent it back. A fresh hot burger did return, but it wasn't that great. No seasoning on the burger either and it wasn't worth the $12-$13. One thing to mention, the manager was standing at the kitchen window and the food would sit there while he waited for the servers to pick up the orders. He could have simply brought our meals over, but chose to just stand there doing nothing but waiting for one of the two servers covering the entire restaurant to come get the food. That is most likely why the burger was cold. I think there is potential there, some small changes would go a long way. read more
