This was a great stop. It's inside of a gas station so don't be looking for places to sit, it's an order to go. Heard about them and decided to check them out. We had some friends over and were treating them to dinner so we got a Family feast with extra fries and large rice. (We got the chicken double fried for added crispness) So for clarity it's only tenders and wings. Not chicken pieces like dark meat and white meat. So I was a little disappointed with that. Anyhow the chicken was seasoned well, I got mild and it was crispy and well done. Fries were seasoned fries those were ok (maybe because we waited half hour from driving home to eat they weren't crispy) The dirty rice was so good. Flavorful and delicious, loved every bite. We had a creamy and delicious Mac and cheese also. On the other hand I felt like it was a little pricy for the family meals but hey... it was delicious so I guess it was worth it. They also have burgers and the sauces we tried were the jerk chilli sauce and jerk lemon pepper. Those were great choices. Finally decided to try Southern Jerks after seeing all the hype on Instagram. For some reason, I thought it was much farther away, but it turned out to be only about 15 minutes from me. Located inside a gas station, so it's easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. Luckily, there wasn't much of a line when I visited. The staff was friendly and polite. I was in and out in about 20 minutes. One thing I didn't realize beforehand is that they specialize in chicken wings and chicken strips rather than offering a full range of fried chicken pieces. They do have a few non-chicken items, though. I'll definitely be back to try the jerk burger. The chicken itself was hot, crispy, juicy, and well seasoned. Their dry seasoning has a unique flavor, but I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, my order was missing the dipping sauces, so I can only judge the chicken on its own. It honestly doesn't need sauce, but I'm on a lemon pepper quest and was reaaaallllly looking forward to trying the jerk lemon pepper. The mac and cheese was probably the best I tried anywhere. Cheese pull and everything. Better than most sit down restaurants. I was also pleasantly surprised by the dirty rice. It's the first place I've found where the rice isn't mushy. The fries were well seasoned and came as crinkle-cut fries, which I actually preferred. I noticed that the fries shown on the menu and in some customer photos look different from what I received, so they may be experimenting with them. If so, I hope the crinkle-cut fries stay. I appreciated that they include jalapeños and rolls with the chicken orders. I ended up chatting with a few other customers, and they were there for the same reason I was: they'd seen Instagram videos calling Southern Jerks "the best chicken in Houston." That's a bold claim in a city with so many outstanding fried chicken spots. I wouldn't personally give it the top spot, but it absolutely holds its own and is well worth trying. It was fun watching the chicken being freshly fried while waiting for my order. My only real complaints were the missing sauces and the price. It's a little more expensive than I expected, especially considering the location, and you have Frenchy's, Popeyes, Timmy Chans, and a few other local spots all there competing. Overall, Southern Jerks serves flavorful chicken, excellent sides, and the best mac and cheese I've had anywhere. While I don't think it's the best fried chicken in Houston, it's definitely worth visiting to decide for yourself. read more

This was my second time trying Southern Jerks. The standout is their customer service. They were so friendly and patient. The line was long but moved fast. I ordered the family pack with wings, a large side of collards and rice. Also got a whole wing special with fries. The food was still piping hot when I got home about 20 mins later. Listen, when I say this chicken is DELICIOUS... believe me! The food is cooked fresh, made to order. The flavor is so amazing. We drive from College station and it was worth every second of the drive and every penny. We will be back. We tried various chicken spots in the area- still haven't found anything to compare. My favorite Jamaican entree is usually jerk chicken, so when I found out there's a spot which sells fried jerk chicken, I was really excited to try the offerings. Southern Jerks, though not a Jamaican spot, does get the jerk flavor right. The wings (5/5) I ordered had a great flavor. This is more of a takeout-oriented business inside a gas station, so I ate a plate later at home. in regards to sides, I had originally thought of ordering greens, but instead ordered the dirty rice (4/5) and mac and cheese (5/5), the latter of the two being really good. The box comes with a roll and a pepper (jalapeño). You also get dipping sauces, which are awesome. Chef Jabril was really cool and kind, eager to explain his business and all the various offerings. There was a little wait, but honestly, that's expected when you're dealing with the hottest chicken spot out right now. The chicken is good. it's hot and fresh. While the chicken is good I was looking for the jerk flavor and it never came through. It smells like jerk but not much of a jerk flavor. Being that I am a home chef who has been creating jerk dishes I was excited to try this but the jerk flavor was disappointing. Again the chicken is really good it's just lacks the jerk flavor. The people in there are nice and it was a small wait but I have no problem waiting for freshly prepared food. The food is a little pricey but I don't mind paying for good food and especially contributing to small businesses. I can say they did get us on the price. My husband said let's get the family wing meal but when I looked up the family meal gives you one less wing than the single meal but the cost is the same price so be ware of the gimmick that you usually find in the large food chains. We also paid for the dipping sauce that was supposed to be jerk. Well again, there was no jerk flavor, It was more like a sweet chili dipping sauce.
