Surprised this place is even still in business. Chips and salsa are less than adequate. Chips are on the bland side and salsa had a slight taste of soap on the tongue. And the kicker is they aren't even free. Our waitress had an attitude from the second my group sat down, and seemed annoyed to have to bring waters to everyone. Also had to ask for silverware and napkins as she didn't think to bring them out... and mind you it was not busy there. It seems like a good location except for the fact that there was music blaring from the place next door making it virtually impossible to hear anyone at your table. Margaritas were average-- clearly tasted like a store bought marg mix. And their 'spicy' margarita special was the opposite of spicy. Once my quesadilla came out, at first I thought there was just triangle pieces of plain tortilla on my plate. That quesadilla got 3 seconds max on that stove top. So undercooked and raw. I've been wanting to try SB for awhile. Finally made it today, but I hate to say I was a little disappointed. I ordered chicken adobo and fried shrimp tacos. The shrimp was good, but I actually didn't like the chicken. It looked good but was pretty bland. We also received a bag of tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa was good, the chips were stale. I know businesses are doing their best to keep things running during Covid so I will take that into consideration. I'll try SB again in the future and update my review appropriately. read more

Best Mexican food I've had in Charlotte. Not only were the plates nicely put together (aesthetically pleasing to the eye), they were delicious and filling. The nachos were a great starter and the mushroom burrito was excellent. Warning: if you order the carne asada tacos, they are spicy if you have a low tolerance for spice. Southbound was a great way to end our senior trip to Charlotte. The decor was so fun and there was a lot of space to social distance in this time of COVID-19. There was a great indoor-outdoor space and there was even a DJ to produce a chill environment. It was a great place to have brunch with friends and for future endeavors at SouthBoud, it was good to know that the restaurant was dog-friendly. The food was incredibly flavorful. I ordered the Hangover Hash for breakfast and the brisket was so tender and juicy. It meshed well with the fresh flavors coming from the veggies packed into the bowl. The one thing that is keeping this restaurant from earning its 5-star review was our waiter. He was trying to crack some jokes but some came off as a little racially sensitive. Meh. It's fine. Everything is fine. SouthBound is fine. I've withheld judgement until I could visit a few times because I had a hard time grasping exactly what SouthBound was going for. As it turns out, I think SouthBound may just have an identity crisis. They try to be SoCal, Mexican street food, trendy Southend and casual/rock-n-roll like Mac's all at the same time. The final product is a big, ol' mess of average food and pretty spotty service. Our first visit was about a month after they opened. We went in with rock bottom expectations because of the pitiful reviews that were plaguing them but were really pleasantly surprised! Was the "market price" guacamole laughably small? Sure! But it was tasty, too! As was all the other food we ordered on that first visit. Service was also incredibly friendly and attentive. Following visits left me wanting more. On our second trip in, we noticed they caved to pressure and did away with the salsa bar and a la carte chips and dips. They're now serving free baskets of chips and salsa. I miss the salsa bar. The food was a little lackluster on this visit but the pitcher of half-priced margaritas conveniently helped us overlook that. Service was average. My third visit pretty much sealed SouthBound's fate and crossed them off my go-to list. I met a business acquaintance there for Taco Tuesday. All tacos are billed as $2 but as soon as I ordered the tuna taco, the waitress told me that one wasn't included in the special. Ok, fine. Give me the shrimp taco instead. I had the shrimp, mahacta beef, and al pastor tacos on corn tortillas. They were worth the $2 each but just barely. The shrimp were the best of the worst. The beef was tough and dry. The al pastor was fatty and flavorless. After the meal, our waitress just disappeared. I finally flagged down the hostess to track down our waitress and the check. She brought it then disappeared again. It took her so long to come back to run the card that my lunch date actually got up and left. (She had a 2pm meeting she was going to be late for.) When it was all said and done, it took almost half an hour from the time we were done eating to the time I was signing the check. Obviously not ideal for a quick business lunch. Moral of all this is that while the food is edible and cheap (at least on Taco Tuesdays, assuming you don't want the tuna taco), there are way too many delicious, authentic Mexican spots in East Charlotte to put up with SouthBound's seemingly downward spiral. read more

~Covid review~ This was the perfect place to grab some food during the pandemic! They had the garage doors up and all the windows open, so everywhere felt safe. Additionally it felt like they were taking every precaution. All employees were wearing masks and social distancing was enforced. I really enjoyed my meal too! I got the build your own bowl, which seems expensive at $14 but was massive and will probably make around one or two more meals for me. My only gripe would be that for $1 extra, I would expect more guacamole than the amount given. The free salsa wasn't very spicy but was very flavorful! This is truly a 4.5 review but my friend Yelp doesn't allow half stars. I had a very good experience at South Bound the atmosphere was very welcoming. I loved all the airflow especially with us being in Covid and it has nice outdoor seating areas as well. Our waiter Bradley was very informative, he gave us recommendations on what to eat as well as drinks and provided great customer service during our entire visit. Even after we paid he still continued checking on our table. The food was very good the tacos were amazing the only reason that it lost that half a star is because I did feel like the Baja shrimp taco could've had more than two pieces of shrimp in it. I love the location of SouthBound and the vibe it gives. Between the restaurant and Mac's Speed shop they have a cute outdoor area they serve drinks and hold tiny concerts on Sundays. This is a great place to get a few drinks and enjoy the patio, which faces South Blvd. The food here is okay, not the best Tex-Mex I've had. My friends enjoyed their food, which they had the taquitos, chicken adobo quesadilla and the shrimp and crab enchiladas. I enjoyed my bowl but I would've loved it had it had more flavor. I had to dress it up to give it what it needed. Service here is attentive but forgetful. All in all, we had a good time, I was just underwhelmed by the food. read more

Great spot for Mexican. Got a table at a high top table and my waitress was very prompt in getting water for our party and asked if I wanted to get guac while waiting for everyone and so glad she did because the guac was really good. Everyone liked their cocktails and wine-- mine was a margarita and then the 2nd to bottom red wine were the favorites. They also have a pineapple cider, which I wanted to try decided to stick with margarita so i will have to come back. We asked the waitress what the favorite dishes were and she suggested the California burrito because it has fries in it, so obviously had to get that. It was massive and so yummy. Popped in with a big group of friends one evening. We had 15 but it didn't take long to find a table. The staff at the hostess desk was very friendly and tried hard to get us seated quickly. They did a great job and we only waited about 10 minutes. Service continued to be good from there. Sometimes waiting on a big group can be intimidating and stressful (especially with our group). Our servers really did a great job. It was later in the evening when we arrived so we had small plates. I had the Carne Asada and Shrimp Tacos. Both had excellent flavor and want to get back for more. My wife had the Nutella Tres Leche and it was strong. I am usually not a fan, but I would Order it again as it was that good. We were greeted by our very friendly waitress. She brought water and chips and salsa, which are now complimentary...which is a change since they opened. It was Tuesday so we ordered a pitcher of Margaritas, 1/2 price on Tuesday. We started we the Carne Asada Fries and Queso dip. Both were amazing, so a good start to the meal. Unfortunately the meal, tacos and quesadillas weren't so good. The meat was dry or fatty and all really lacked in flavor. Overall, great spot, decor and location. Southbound has a great ambiance and plenty of inside and outside seating with ample shade. Great frozen drinks and reasonably priced pitcher options. Salsa is not the best but everything else was delicious. It can get very busy being on south blvd. But the service team stays on top of tables and the wait is never long. read more

I come to Southbound often on my lunch breaks as i work in the Southpark area. The service is always fast and the workers are always very knowledgeable about what's being served. I also love the team player aspect where everyone looks to always be helping each other out. The food is always delicious and i like the open layout of the restaurant. In the sea of the Charlotte taco scene, SouthBound just doesn't make the cut. I might go 2.5 stars here, but certainly not 3. Pros: our server was very kind, and could handle a large table well. The chips and salsa were on point, and they would refill your chips as often as you needed. The space itself is also very cool, and I love that they have UMAR art throughout the back wall. Someone at our table ordered the southbound Rita and said it was on point for a margarita. Cons: My salad was awful. The plate it was served on was WAY too small, and it was 90% romaine hearts. It was supposed to have black beans, corn and avacado on it, and I could have counted all those pieces on both my hands. I ordered the carne asada to go on top, and in retrospect, thank goodness it came on the side. The meat was mostly gristle and unbelieveably salty. My husband ordered the California burrito, and was told there were only a few French fries for "crunch". The burrito was about 50% fries, and there was no crunch, just soggy potato. Another person at our table ordered a Michelada, and it was just flavorless, and much more Clamato than beer. Overall, I tried it, but unless I hear that it's menu/seasonings/etc have changed for the better, I don't think we will be going back. read more

The hostess were welcoming upon entry and we sat immediately even on a Friday night at 630 PM. The server immediately brought us waters and greeted us! We ordered chips and queso to start - their chips were thin and crunchy - yum! And the queso was tasty and thick - extra yum! I ordered the blood orange margarita on the rocks with a sugar rim and OMGGG I could've had 5 of them - probably one of the best tasting blood orange margs I've ever had 10/10. My BF had the tropical Red Bull vodka drink which he said was missing something, seemed flat - I think some splashed of sprite could've done the trick tho! I ordered the brisket burrias with consome and they were delicious - first time I've had them so nothing to compare but tasted great to me and my boyfriend had the brisket burrito which was huge and just as good he said. Both entrees were definitely filling and we didn't need any additional sides. Overall the experience was great and I've bookmarked this place to go back when I'm in the area! Our food came out very fast, and I questioned that to myself, but decided to see how eveeything was first. My fiance ordered carne asada fajita for one: As u can see from the picture, the rice and beans came in tester size 2oz cups... we reviewed the photos on Yelp prior to coming and none of them show these tiny size portions of sides!!! I ordered 2 tacos with a side and upgraded my side to elote (and was told it would be an upcharge to do so, however they charged me the regular price for a side of elote). 1 taco was carne asada, which was pretty good, however the 2nd was pork belly and it was extremely salty!!! I was able to replace it with another carne asada taco. I asked for to go containers and that's when I asked for the salsa that should've came with my chips at the beginning!! It was a tiny container, but what else did I expect??? Not sure if we would try this place again, the parking lot was full of young kids playing music from their cars, drinking, and dancing... maybe because of the holiday weekend but still... I was pretty excited to come here. The ambience looked like it was pretty cool, almost like a giant refurbished garage with the open wall concept. Immediately, I look at the margaritas on the menu, which i could not wait for. I noticed they have sour mix (huge turn off for me), so I asked for a skinny spicy margarita (aka no sour mix). While waiting, I snacked on the salsa and chips which were pretty good. I receive my margarita and was incredibly disappointed! There must have been more lime than tequila in the glass, it was awful. I had a few people at the table try (we had a big group of 13 people), and everyone agreed. So I asked the waiter if I can have another spicy skinny margarita with less lime (typically skinny is just tequila, some lime and a little club soda). Instead I basically received club soda with a touch of tequila and a touch of lime. I couldn't believe how AWFUL it was!! If I had to base the rating on the margaritas alone, this would be a one star review. My husband and I also said we would love to come here and sit at the bar for drinks because the atmosphere is awesome, but because the margaritas were so bad, that is no longer an option. For the food, it was good. The nachos were good and tasty. I ordered the chicken quesadillas which had a California flare to them, and they were quite good. My husband had a chicken bowl which was awesome, and honestly what saved the star ratings from the poor margaritas. The waiter was very nice, but we had to keep asking for things (ie: we weren't asked if we wanted more drinks, had to ask for plates for the apps, had to ask for silverware and napkins). Our server Bradley was very knowledgeable about the menu and friendly! He made recommendations based on the flavors we were looking for. I started with the seasonal sangria cocktail. It was a fun twist on sangria- made with white wine and pineapple juice. Then I ordered the 3/$15 tacos. They let you mix and match which is great. I had the pork pastor taco, avocado and Mexican street corn taco, and the Baja Fish Taco. All three are delicious but hands down my favorite was the avocado and Mexican street corn. Came here for dinner on a Thursday night and we were a little skeptical what it was going to be like remembering all the (not so positive) comments when they first opened. We had a beer and a pitcher of sangria to drink (yes the pitcher was for me ) and both were tasty and cold. They served us a fire roasted salsa and chips to start which were much appreciated. I got the chicken flautas and my husband got one of the steak, chicken, and shrimp tacos. He said the shrimp and steak were his favorite and he totally could've just ordered two.
