Nice mom n pop dinner. Aaa staff, very friendly and doing a fine job. The coffee was solid. Pass on the omelets if you are looking for the fluffy full omelets.also the biscuits were disappointing, though I was meatless and so no gravy. While there are vegetarian options it is clearly not what they focus on. Apparently the bacon is great and the chicken fried steaks. Will come back to try some of their other options. A great hole in the wall diner! We love going here for dinner or breakfast food. I highly recommend the pancakes. They are by far the best around and even better with adding blueberries. Sometimes I will even get the breakfast with pancakes for dinner! They also have very good homemade pies. The prices are reasonable and wait staff has been very friendly in all my experiences. It has a great small town diner atmosphere to it. The seating is a bit limited so they could do with a bigger dining area. With the current covid precautions, this may even be more apparent. They do carry out service so that is always an option too. Next time you have a taste for some pancakes, try out southside diner! read more

We have been here twice now. First time there was beef and noodles on special. They were pretty good. My husband enjoyed them as well. The chili was kind of bland. But for both of us to eat the special and added chili was around $20. The second time I had the Philly cheesesteak and it was great. Their fries are good. My husband had the chicken sandwich. This place was just ok. Nothing spectacular. They were pretty busy so we had to wait to be seated since they are t very big. After being seated, we we approached by the server in a timely manner. It took about 45 minutes to get our food so that was very disappointing. I was starving. I had south side country breakfast or something of that nature. Bacon, eggs, hash browns, biscuits and gravy. Everything was unfortunately bland. The best thing was the bacon and the biscuits themselves. The toast them on the grill so they had a nice crisp outside. I ended up eating them with jelly since I didn't care for the gravy. I even tried putting gravy and hot sauce on the hash browns, but it wasn't doing it for me. All the employees were kind and helpful. The food was just very blah in my opinion. My hubby and kids liked the pancakes, but I didn't try them myself. Yes Yes Yes! I have lived in Crawfordsville, IN for 19 years and have been back and forth to Lafayette so many times. I moved to Baltimore, MD over 10 years ago and continue to come back and forth to see family and friends in Indiana. During a visit this past week to Lafayette to see a friend, he took me to the diner. I had no idea it existed and I wish I had a long time ago. We walked in, were asked to sit on a specific side of the diner due to COVID. We happily found a booth, sat down, and had one of the diner servers come over, dropped off menus and quickly asked what we wanted to drink. I'm from the east coast now and am very used to quick and rapid service but wasn't ready for that kind of rapid answer. I was thrown off guard, no worries though. I was able to just quickly get a coffee ordered and thumb through the breakfast menu. I ordered coffee and a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. After about 1 minute, coffee arrived, five minutes later, here comes the sandwich, which was awesome! After about 15 - 20 minutes of enjoying quick breakfast, my friend and I paid our $5.00 for coffee and sandwiches each and headed out. BIG take-aways for me: - Quick service - COVID friendly (at that time) with masks worn by all - Spacing out of all customers - VERY cost friendly with great food! It's the little things that set the stage for a great experience or a lack luster disappointment. For starters the greeting, Southside flunks by leaving costumers waiting awkwardly by the door while the staff bustles around. The "hostess" greeted customers from the back of the room or second seating area with a menu waving come here motion. No good morning, hello, welcome to Southside. Second the booth we were sat at had a tear in the seat that was the size of a small child (picture attached). The booth was positioned where I had 24" between myself and the table edge as was my wife's side which made for an uncomfortable sitting on the edge of the booth. I'm 6'4" and 290lbs and there was room for another me between me and the table. Third, the table had a wobble that spilled our drinks this prompting a sweet and low shimming. The server was very friendly but absent minded. We asked for more cream when we were served our coffee and waters and explained we needed a little more time to peruse the menu. Server returned 10 minutes later to ask for our order, still no cream for my wife to doctor her coffee to her liking. A reminder was provided and she promptly retrieved some. I had the philly cheese omelette no green peppers with American cheese, home fries and a single biscuit and gravy. My wife ordered the breakfast platter and a single pancake. The food was not bad but nothing to brag about. Home fries void of flavor and came out cold. Omelette was cooked to a rubbery texture and the biscuits and gravy was horrible. Gravy was bland and biscuit seemed stale needing a knife to hack through it. My wife's over easy eggs were cooked well but same home fries and back was cold and chewy. Pancake was good from my wife's perspective, I tried and wouldn't order if we were to return. I salvaged my home fries thanks to the cholula hot sauce which I love. If it was food alone I would rate it a 2.5 out of 5. The booth adjacent to ours we learned as we dined was a either a previous employee or a current off duty employee. Her waitress was not ours and neither of them was capable of keeping their tone down or mouths shut as they both openly railed about one of the owners (female). It was very unprofessional to listen to. So there you have it. Despite having a friendly but absent minded waitress ourselves the remainder of the staff from my perspective was non attentive to their tables or busy flirting with the bus boy. No one seemed to be in charge. We waited but did not receive. Copy of our tab at any time to review, even at check out it was waiting to get up and not have my back side in someone's face due to the cramped setting. My suggestion is whomever owns the Southside should get a full time manager to regain control of the staff and if you were there the morning of 12/21/19 you should be ashamed of your staff. read more

I ordered the South Side Diner French Toast and I loved it. The kind of bread they use is unique and it was cooked perfectly. We would definitely come back. The atmosphere is a typical diner. Reminds me of Mary Ann's in Normal, IL. We were able to seat ourselves and the place was pretty clean. My booth seat was kind of broken though. I ordered the country fried steak breakfast with a coffee. It was good, but average. The scrambled eggs were flat and not the best I've had. I definitely enjoyed the biscuits and gravy though! The hash browns were good as well. These two were probably my favorite parts of the meal. The waitresses were nice and efficient.
