Got the car broken into on the 2nd time parking here, ever. I understand it's a "Bay Area" thing. But there seemed to be a complete nonchalant way about these types of situations with security. Nothing of value was in the car. It was a busy day and there were many cars. Bad luck, I guess. With that said, security does nothing here to prevent or deter loitering. Of course, the question becomes: "how can they?" San Leandro/ Bay Fair seems to do a good job. There's security roving all throughout open hours. South Hayward BART is really more of a connector to move around people throughout the Bay Area versus some of the other BART stations which have things to do around the area. It is heavily surrounded by housing versus other stations that have walkable things to do once you exit the station. However you could walk toward Tennyson and go toward Little Caesars to explore the area but it's too long of a walk for anyone unless you ride a bike. But it's there for the residents of South Hayward who may need to travel or go to work. read more

I love riding BART when I am in the bay...what I don't like are the stinky fabric on the seats and all over some of the carts. This station is one of the less crowded I've seen while riding the train though. The parking is small compared to the others and if you don't get early it will definitely be hard to find a parking spot so plan ahead if you need to leave your car and have to get somewhere on time. The parking is currently $1 daily until 3:00PM, and you have to pay it when you get your fare if not prepare to pay $45 for a ticket. There are also taxis available outside, and buses are fairly flowing in/from the station. Staff is very helpful. The two way fare to get to the Embarcadero or Montgomery station in SF is almost $10. Fares are very expensive on BART compared to the $6 day pass you can get to ride most of the trains or buses in LA. read more

Before 8:30am Mon-Thurs and you will get parking otherwise be ready to park far and walk. For a glittering experience go to extra BART parking on Tennyson Rd and you will find tons of shiny shattered car glass on the sidewalk. Also don't expect to get a seat on SF train, atleast not before 9:45 am. Hopefully you don't get on a coach with an unfortunate homeless reeking of body odor and urine. Also half the time AC don't work so it can turn into a hot tin can full of sweaty people especially during evening commute. But it beats traffic sure but i am glad i don't have to spend $13 and 2 hours everyday on it anymore. Good luck for. as the previous reviewer called it, an adventure!! read more

I remembered coming here a while back. Now that I've been going to Berkeley I had to force myself to learn bart. The gentelman in the booth was kind enough to teach me how to use bart. The second time I did it without anyones help except what bart to take. =) I wish that they had bart that goes all the way to San Jose so I wouldn't drive and spend so much on gas. read more

Compared to the other BART stations, this location isn't that bad. The number of seedy characters hanging around isn't too high (albeit they are present). The station itself doesn't reek of urine or feces. Lastly, I'm not in fear of my life or being raped when I exit this station late at night. So why just the 2 stars? Parking. The parking lot is atrocious. The spots are absolutely tiny and the lot fills up faster than any BART lot I've ever seen. Arrive here at 8am and you're parking on the street, buddy. Arrive at 9am and you're parking on the street, half a mile away from the station. Half a mile. On the street. Still need to pay $2.... Poor design of a BART station overall. Avoid this station if possible. The Hayward station is much better in terms of parking and layout. read more

Before I write anything more, I will say that I hate riding Bart. The interior is dirty and sometimes smells... maybe with the new Bart trains coming, I won't hate it as bad, but right now yes I do.. Anyways on to the review of South Hayward BART Station. This place scares the crap out of me. Usually public places don't but this place... I would avoid. Sure the parking is free.. but the pick up line for this place is ridiculous. It's just a long stretch with a handicap parking spot right in the middle of it, not very convenient for people who don't have handicap signs. Also sometimes you run into drivers who just leave there door open while they are waiting... not very safe. Um... when you buy tickets or load your clipper card be careful. Sometimes the BART person who is suppose to be sitting in their office isn't there. When they aren't you get loiterers just around the station coming up to you and asking for money! And they are rude too! I had such a bad experience while I was loading up my clipper. Some guy came up to me and asked me for money and I told them I didn't have cash and that I was just loading my clipper. He then proceeds to swear at me while walking back to his friends around the corner. I ran fast through the gates after that. But once you pass the gates, the BART station is relatively clean itself. So if you are a female passenger traveling by yourself, be careful ... but even if you are a male passenger, be safe! read more

Such a small parking lot in an equally sketchy neighborhood. But, on the upside, it's one of the few lots that aren't packed by 7 AM on a weekday. If you can get there by 7:30 AM, you should be good on finding a parking space and possibly getting to work on time. Sure, it's a harrowing walk in the evening back to your car, but you just kind of suck it up and go with it. If you wanted the better lot, you should have awoken at 5 AM to get parking by 6 AM elsewhere because those lots suck more. Have fun riding BART! read more

Oh BART. How do I love thee, let me count the ways I love thee for taking me to the city and back, and causing motion sickness when being ridden backwards. Making me feel obligated to purchase something from the hot dog guy, and later puking it up at the theater at the age of 8. I love thee for making me check my pockets 50 times before leaving and installing the fear that I may lose my ticket or my belongings. The white noise under the tunnel helps lull people to sleep, later to be awaken to the mocking of the people sitting across from them. Oh the smell and lack of cleanliness makes me feel right at home as I fight for the seat without the stains. I love thee for being packed during peak hours and during game season, forcing people to stand up and grip tightly onto the bars. I love thee for making people trip and fall before they find a seat as the engine revs up and starts to go. Really. It makes me laugh. A lot. I love thee for making me late because the Hayward police are chasing someone down and decided everything has to be shut down because the person might have weapons and makes you want to stay to see what happens, but at the same time are scared to get shot. Average station, but pretty bland when compared to other BART stations. I hate the design of this station - there are only 1 set of stairs and escalators for both platforms. Basically the escalators only take you up, leaving everyone else going down taking the stairs. Parking fills up quick in the mornings, so get here early. read more

I had to review this specific station because, during the chaos of the grass fire tonight and them having to suspend service to UC and Fremont stations from there, the station operator as well as AC Transit took care of the passengers despite some of them being, well... pretty annoying (like BART started the fire to tick people off... really, people?). I used to commute to work from this station 4 or 5 times a week. The parking fee is $2. The parking lot is fairly big (the station is large in general), but it quickly fills up on weekdays. The station could be designed better. As Robb J. states, "there are only 1 set of stairs and escalators for both platforms." Some of the drivers here in the morning pissed my wife and I off by driving too slowly or by not moving up enough (like at most BART stations, the passenger pick-up area is typically busy). This wasn't the fault of anyone at the station, though. One thing in need of attention, however, is how often (and well) the passenger pick-up area is cleaned. For weeks I was being dropped off next to 2 large stains (my wife was forced to drop me off at this one spot most of the time). One of them looked like Slimer from "Ghostbusters" had been zapped into pieces (as far as I'm concerned, he's just another "guy" who likes to eat). The other one resembled some red splotches or chunks mixed with blood (I initially thought that I was looking at a crime scene or the aftermath of a zombie attack- "Mmm...Brains!"). Even now, you can still see traces of the stains (I really wonder what the hell was dropped- I have an image of a klutzy nerd tripping while carrying a large science project). There's a food cart out front. When I was in high school (I don't want to think about how long ago that was), I would buy hot dogs from time to time (they were quite good). Although there's a new vendor now, hot dogs, polish sausage, drinks, chips, and other snacks are still sold. The platforms are long, and there are a decent number of benches to sit on. The platforms are old, but they're maintained well and clean (sometimes there are some leftover newspapers lying around, but that's really it). They're usually quiet too. One morning, a little girl was balling her eyes out for 5 minutes (I don't know why, but I'm not a popular guy- stealing her sucker didn't endear me to her either). In general, though, things are cool. You might see some birds in the morning. They like to hang out on the beams. They're loud at times, but usually they quietly poop (on the beams) and chat about current events ("Big Bird is getting a swelled head, and I want to have a talk with him. Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?"). I was a little nervous when I first started catching trains here. Because of how hot I am, I was worried that I was going to be felt up. o_O No, I was nervous because there are a fair number of weird people in Hayward. I got used to seeing some riders, though, and am still fond of some of them (this one woman used to catch the train with her adorable son- he suddenly wasn't around anymore, maybe because he's old enough to go to school now). The agent I always saw in the morning was rude to me one day (some agents regularly deal with stupid people, and come to think that everyone is like that). His attitude was better after that, though, and he even announced when the trains were coming sometimes (he did this for riders like me who were often running late). The men's restroom is somewhat large and not too dirty (it's better than most BART restrooms). Still, I did my business and got moving. I also kept my nose to myself (in other words, I never breathed in deeply). I agree with some other reviewers that the station is "bland" and "average." Recently I went to China and also Japan, when I came back and sat in BART, I felt aweful. I am told the BART employees make 100k and always striking. Why cannot we privatize it completely. I wish you guys travel and see some bullet trains outside of USA. They are pretty cool. They even cost less. BART officials should go and travel in those trains and learn form it. Do not use this station for single day reserve parking! We paid our $4.00 on line; got to the station well before the required 10:00 am and there was not a single parking place in the permit lot OR the entire lot! Terrible customer service and false advertisement to say the least! read more

With all the construction on Mission blvd, this Bart station can be a pain to get to sometimes. Parking doesn't fill up here as fast as the Castro Valley bart, but that may be because leaving your car here for long periods of time probably isn't the best idea. There are some characters that linger around, so I wouldn't recommend coming here at night by yourself if you're a girl. read more

This is my go-to station for the past a couple years. I love the station because it has a bigger parking lot compared to Union city. Sadly, yesterday, my 91 Toyota pickup's catalytic converter was stolen while parked during the daytime. Isn't the job of Bart police to provide security of riders as well as its property? The days of where I feel safe about my car parked in South Hayward Bart station is long gone. I am considering to move my station to Union City where it is not surrounded by the shady neighborhood. read more

Nothing bad has ever happened to me at this Bart. There is ample parking. Only downer is that there aren't a lot of trains that pass through this station so if you miss your train, it'll be another 15 min till the next one arrives. read more

The trick with Bart is well you have to take it before it gets really packed. As far as seating go it's open however be smart where you seat at. You'll see lots of crazy things on Bart such as the less fortunate sleeping or even using the restroom on Bart. Sometimes you'll see people smoking. Ideally I just walk to the next car. I feel it's not worth getting into a confrontation and when Bart police get involve it delays the already delayed commute. Always have headphones on be sure to have your clipper card or Bart ticket. With all Bart delays try leaving earlier and expect unexpected delays along the way. read more

Its Bart. Nothing too exciting. It does what its supposed to do. The staff is helpful and friendly. The facilities are fine and the trains work. Homeless people wander around, but they don't bother you so its alright. read more

The south Hayward station is different than any other stations. The Bart parking is on the street outside of parking lot. There is no building parking like other stations, so NO camera. The area is very unsafe. you can see some police cars around those apartments. Sometime Wednesday or Thursday is even harder to find parking. You may be lucky to find the ONLY one which is very far, have to walk 10 mins back to the station. I got robbed one time at the parking lot. There is NO camera whatsoever to even see what's going on there. The police didn't help much, so good luck if you ever park there. And be aware of those weird people surrounding. read more

I took Bart for the first time in 15 years. Didn't realize there was a Bart station 12 minutes drive away from my house. This station isn't very big, small amt of ticket stations. It's not as crowded as the one from Union city or the downtown Hayward one. Bart came within 3-5 mins of schedule. Got to SF civic center / UN station in less than 45 mins, beats sitting in traffic. read more

This is the bart that i take to work on a daily basis. Its really small compared to other barts, but it has taxi service as well as ace transit. And parking is free here if the Fremont bart parking lot is full, they have a limited number of bike racks though, but its a safe bart where its ideal to go to Alameda or Oakland especially if you are flying out of Oakland. read more

I take Fremont to Richmond Bart everyday and what u notice is dirty seats, tissues and food wrappers stuck in the corner of the seats in the morning which tells me that it's never cleaned. read more

It's South Hayward, Enough said hahaha! Not bad actually since I've been using this station for years and had stopped after graduating but seems the same, never felt unsafe. Only difference is that the construction looks almost complete around the street area and parking lots but IMPORTANT NOTE parking is NO longer free, it's 1$ until 3pm and free after that and on weekends. Also don't park in permit parking lot in front until after 10am if you don't have a permit. read more

South Hayward Bart is a great station. FREE PARKING! first of all =) Its very close to my house so it is convienant... Have hardly seen any beggars which is nice. The last thing I want to do is be bothered for some money on my way to work. Life is tough and everyone has their problems, its annoying that they feel its okay to ask working individuals for money. Everyone has the ability to change. Anyways back to BART- bike racks are there,and they also have bathrooms! Overall I feel safe leaving my car there which is the most important factor to me. Love BART system, I don't have to deal with 580 and 880 traffic! read more

Not a very congested BART station. They have free parking, and you can find free parking spaces even between 8-9am (as of 10/2009). I have not left later than that to work to know whether spaces are available between 9-10am. read more

one of two bart stations in hayward. it's the closest station to me, so i can't complain. although, i will complain about the price to get to the city. it seems that they keep increasing prices every time i ride bart. not south hayward's fault, per se, but still, someone has to bear the brunt of my complaint. oh and the service...i didn't expect the ritz carlton front desk, but lady, please! i asked you what time the station closes! it would have taken you 80 zillion breaths less to tell me a time than tell me it isn't your job to keep track of the schedule. kthanks. read more

I patronized this station from 1996 to 2009 (13 years) and from 2010 to 2011 (1 year); total of 14 years. The neighborhood, Dixon, is not really great. But, I NEVER had an issue at this station even coming home after dark. Hayward is a horrible station, lots of lowlifes hanging around. But, this station is pretty quiet. They have taken out the overflow lot; it's fenced off now and I'm not sure if it's coming back. But, this is a good station. If you have an appointment or want to go somewhere during the week you're best off to get there way, way early and take an early morning train to make sure you get parking. read more
