I have a senior's card that I use for Bart and I needed to charge it for my first time. So the manager came out and personally help me with this. She was very very helpful courteous and professional. I really enjoyed having a short chat with her while I was figuring out the machine. Date: 9/11/2016 Time: 12:50 PM 64° Mostly cloudy I haven't gotten off at the North Berkeley BART Station in ages...make that about 40 years ago when I lived in Berkeley. I used to get off here to catch the AC #88, heading southbound on Sacramento Street to head home. This time around I was on my way to the Solano Stroll, using public transportation. Station agent was nice and pleasant when I asked her where can I catch the shuttle bus to the Solano Stroll. In front, on curbside was her response. Even though this underground station is still in Berkeley, it is much cleaner and quieter than the stations from Lake Merritt to Downtown Berkeley. Outside of the station, you hardly see any riff raffs who seem to linger around other stations within the BART system. This station is also conveniently located in a residential community. It has a large parking lot and a public transportation stop (AC transit buses) is nearby on Sacramento Street. The only return visit to this station would be for the Solano Stroll next year. read more

I love this station. Even if I have to go to Berkeley or Ashby or Oakland, I'd rather drive here and park my car, rather than park in Richmond or El Cerrito Del Norte. I feel like my car and I are safe. The only issue is that there isn't always someone working in the booth, but it's a nice, clean station and waiting there isn't a hassle. read more

This station is one of my favorite station. It is one of the biggest station with over 100 parking spots. I heard that you need to come before 8am if you want a spot though. This station is almost always busy and plenty of people coming in and out. It feels safe for that reason. You go downstairs to enter the platform. I use this station regularly in the morning and evening after work. The bart station is in a quiet neighborhood and Sacramento street is the main street. I always see some taxi car waiting outside for people that want to use that service. I parked here on the weekend as well and never had a problem finding parking! read more

This is my hometown BART Station and if need be I could walk here from the house. This is often my starting point to events in the City or in last night's case, a trip with my son and Gayle to see the Warriors play. The station itself is functional (especially if the ticket machines are working) and it's easy to get to, get in, get down, get back, get back up, and get out! And it's a lot cleaner, more friendly, and less creepy than the Downtown Berkeley BART station. There's also a huge amount of parking available (and in Berkeley no less) and a spot is usually pretty easy (and free) to get during the off hours. I haven't had much parking trouble during prime time either and I don't mind the walk or the modest fee that BART charges. I was also informed recently that traffic requirements are being more strictly enforced at the main entrance and that the resulting fines are not kind. I figure that it's all part of the "milk the locals" strategy that our regional governments are trying to use to balance the budget. read more

This is the free ride for many of us, going back several generations. BART provides free access to the station via the elevator located in the parking lot. No one in my family has ever paid to ride BART. The Free Access elevator is located in the parking lot along Sacramento street. Paying to ride BART is stupid when you can ride for free. 100 percent legal, not that anyone would ever stop you. read more

The station itself is a city block but when getting on and off, one cannot tell because there are only a few gates in the whole station. A few people also got confused like me when we passed by Berkeley then the next stop was North Berkeley. I have a translink, but I see lots of people get their cards demagnatised all the time! Why even have a card that can be demagnatised. I had been on the North Berkeley platform before, usually because I had slept through the Downtown Berkeley stop and had to get off the northbound train to catch a southbound one, but today was the first time I ever actually made full use of the station. And I mean full use. What does John S. do when he needs to take his car to work because after work he's dog- and house-sitting in Marin? I could have tried to find free parking in Berkeley, but that's kind of a crap shoot, and did I really want to be that far from my car, which isn't a very inviting target to thieves, but this is Berkeley, and people here aren't the brightest bunch, at least in the thievery department? I could have gotten the $10 parking-garage early-bird special, but I was too late for it. So I decided to try the North Berkeley parking lot even though it was almost nine a.m. Guess what? At 9:02 a.m. on a Friday, there were plenty of spots left. So I paid $1 for parking, $1.75 to ride BART downtown, and $1.75 to ride it back. Four-fifty for all-day parking isn't half bad. The station itself is tiny. The lines for the fare machines can back up against the station agent's booth--I really want to call it an agency--but there's limited space, so I don't really know what a better solution would have been. The platform itself is very '70s and quite OK, actually. I don't mind that the up and down escalators aren't near each other; the layout of the escalators and stairs are actually really interesting architecturally. read more

I used this station twice a day, 5 days a week, for about four months without incident. Nobody asked for change, the station didn't smell like urine, and there's an open public restroom inside the station that's more or less clean. read more

I'm not planning to review the whole BART system, but the North Berkeley station is quite possibly my favorite. There's something cool about a "suburban" parking-lot station where the trains are underground. You drive by and see all these parking spaces surrounding....a neat little hole in the ground. No ugly elevated rails splitting up the neighborhood. And it seems like this one would be a pleasure to use, for those of you who live nearby. No need to dodge homeless bums and puddles of piss like at Downtown Berkeley, or look over your shoulder for robbery attempts like at Ashby. Just a convenient, quiet, drama-free little portal to SF or points beyond. That's what BART is supposed to be, isn't it? read more

North Berkeley BART is A-OK! There's a pretty big parking lot surrounding the station, so it's pretty convenient too if you're driving. Though, if you go during busy times it can be hard to find a spot. I once spent about 30 minutes circling the parking lot trying to find a place to park, only to give up and attempt to find parking on one of the side streets, only to give up because nearly all of the side streets surrounding the BART station only had 2 hour parking. It was pretty sad.... But, overall, this station is relatively clean. And it seems safe! Yay. Monthly parking is also available, though a lot of the times when I was driving in to the BART stations in the mornings at like 8ish there seemed to be a lot of spots in the regular parking area and not just the reserved area. read more

Very few homeless people waving 20 cent tickets in your face asking for change. Smells reasonably clean. It's rarely crowded and it's relatively bike friendly. If you have a long wait for the next train or a long ride ahead, discretely pull a newspaper out of the blue recycling can and enjoy two-day old comics and sudoku. read more

North Berkeley BART is a convenient spot but the operators there are not always at their station. When they do show up, they are friendly. Many new passengers have difficulty with the large gate, where you put in your ticket and it spits back out. I've observed a lot of people don't know that you're supposed to pull out the ticket to open the gate. Many times (yes MANY) this gate is not even working. I see no help at all that the BART operator gives to those people. Considering the BART strike and their greedy demand for more money, I don't see any better service from the station operators. A few nights ago there was only ONE gate open, the other six were closed. A long line to that one gate and no BART station operator anywhere to open these closed gates. Service is below par. The station itself is kept clean. The parking lot is not that safe, with people getting their cars busted into and the homeless rummaging through the Goodwill Box at the outside of the station. This station receives a lowish rating for a couple of reasons. One is the escalators. Now, I'm pretty spry. I love stairs. They keep me healthy. However, when you grow accustomed to a convenience, it can be a bummer to lose it. To wit, the escalator in NBB. Not only is it broken, it has been getting fixed for...a month (probably more **UPDATE** Photographic evidence from March 2010)? Taking steps out, putting them in, taking them back out. I'm reminded of the movie 'The Plumber'. Has the California lost the art and craft of escalator repair? Have the last exponents of this arcane science passed from this mortal realm, leaving only partially trained apprentices? Also, clearer signage about how to get on the Ohlone Greenway would help non-natives or people who don't work in the area. And then there's Joni Mitchell hanging out in front... And the infrequency and inconsistency of the bus service... Oh, NBB, you're not scary packed and grody like Balboa, but I've still got you under my skin. read more

It's a Bart station - so I don't expect too much... but this one has what I need.... A big parking lot in a safe neighborhood - free on weekends - cheap on weekdays. There's usually even street parking nearby. There's a bathroom in the station. Big points!! And once when my car keys were stolen in the city leaving my car stuck in the North Berkeley Bart reserved parking lot on Monday morning the attendant on staff made sure I didn't get a ticket or get towed away while I waited for the service guy. read more

North Berkeley is all right for a BART station. It drops you off away from downtown Berkeley, at least far away from the campus life. There's places to shop at, places to eat at and a few places to do laundry, but overall, a little more boring than the Berkeley stop. I agree that there's less panhandling traffic and maybe a little cleaner than the Ashby stop, but over than that, it's all right. read more

North Berkeley Bart Station has two bathrooms! So you can rest assured that you have a place to go if you're on the go. Besides that, BART is super convenient. It's fairly easy to park here, and that way you can get in and out of SF without the traffic jams. read more

If I'm visiting berkeley, this is the ONLY bart station i'm willing to exit at. Plenty of parking and easy for pickups. Downtown stop they won't let cars stop for even 10 seconds, which creates a lot of extra looping. But 4 stars for bart in general...12am is too early to stop and $7 + $3 parking does not provide much incentive to not drive. It's almost as expensive as driving. read more

On September 11, 2005 my housemates' and my formerly-pure infatuation with public transportation (one of the reasons I moved away from SoCal in the first place) became significantly more ambivalent. We had just left the Solano Stroll in Berkeley and were waiting in the North Berkeley Station for a BART back to San Francisco. We sat on a bench in the far end of the station comparing quarters from different states. When we got to Alabama, a black guy, about our age, gold teeth, asked us for a cigarette. We told him sorry. His eyes stayed on us a little too long and he walked away. Moments later, screams came from down the platform. The same man was attacking a small Asian woman who, despite his attacks, kept following him. Then she was on the ground and he was standing above her. A PDA slid away from the scuffle and he dived for it. Some people tried to fight the black man, others tried to help the Asian woman. Shouts for police and paramedics. Someone shouted, "Oh my God he's going to die down here." Another got on the intercom: "We need massive security down here!" A guy in a red shirt punched the black guy in the face three times. A train pulled up, and the black guy jumped onto it. Onlookers followed him and told the passengers what had happened. Passengers stuck their bicycles in the doorways so that the train couldn't leave, and everybody got off the train. The station became crowded and I heard nervous busibodies tell the newly-arrived their version of what was going on. I waited there for what seemed like ages. The train just sat there, empty. As far as I knew, the black man was still on there. Blood was splattered on the platform floor, on the wall next to the telecom, and on the outside of the train. Everybody was asking where the police were. Unobservant people were scolded when they stepped in the blood; when they realized where their feet were, they shivered and gasped. I learned that the man had stabbed some people after trying to rob the Asian woman, who was deaf. She was now crying, missing one shoe, and her finger was bleeding. He had run onto the train and thrown the knife under his seat. Then he sat, as if tossing the weapon underneath him and pulling on a smile would fool all the onlookers who were yelling that he had stabbed people. He finally decided to get off the train and run up the stairs. On his way up, a BART policeman just happened (no seriously, "just happened" -- he wasn't actually responding to our phone calls) to be coming down the stairs and he apprehended the guy. Finally one cop, who looked like a slim Brendan Frasier, came down to the platform. The entire time, the crowd had acted bravely and cooperatively: trying to protect the victim, trying to fight off the mugger, stopping the train, translating sign language for the deaf woman, putting her shoe back on, calling somebody to come pick her up... Nearly everybody at least tried to help somehow. But once the single cop was involved, the crowd thinned. He separated the witnesses from the non. My housemates and I went to the witness side, which, unlike the crowd, had thinned to mostly white people. Brendan Frasier carried the knife from the train, holding it in white cloth. The cop took down our information, and we waited as the trains flew past us without stopping. The BART announcers repeated that the North Berkeley Station was closed due to an ongoing police matter. More cops appeared with yellow tape and some numbered placards that they placed next to splatters of blood. The BART Tactical Squad came in, wearing black combat wear. Everybody except us witnesses had gradually found a way to leave the station. I was instructed by a BART Tactical Cop, hours later, not to discuss what I had seen with anyone until I had given my statement. The police were inept. It took them two hours to get around to taking our statements, and they only did so because we reminded them that they had forgotton us. A woman and her son tried to talk to me about the mayhem. Like most of the witnesses there, they seemed eager to give the police what they wanted to hear. I just grunted at them. I was careful when I gave my statement. I left out a lot of things because I couldn't remember them exactly. I never described the suspect to the cop or mentioned his physical appearance in any way. I was waiting for the cop to ask me about it. When I proof read what he had written, I saw that he had replaced each of my "suspect"s with "black male". Afterwards, the sergeant took me outside to identify the suspect. I was nervous - the responsibility of identifying someone who has been accused of a robbery and quadruple stabbing. I stood behind a cop car facing the suspect, the high beams shining on him making it impossible for him to see me. He didn't look scared. He looked sort of happy, in fact. But that was probably because he was on drugs. I didn't give a positive identification until he smiled and I saw gold teeth shining. read more

A very rude and unhelpful employee refused to issue me a ticket subtracted from the ticket I purchased so that I might get it replaced as it had become demagnetized. She said she "could not do it". That is a lie as in the years I've been riding bart this has happened twice and both times the agent was able to do this (one of those times was at this same station and the agent then was great!). Also she had a pile of tickets sitting in front of her! But apparently yelling at me was less a waste of her time in her mind than just grabbing one of them with enough on it to get me to a station where I could do a ticket exchange. read more

This is a review for the whole Bart. Bart has wonderful front office staff always. Bart is great because of its accessibility and parking as well schedule. Bart needs to massively improve its cleanliness and need to enforce non loitering. It seems that on a daily basis the seats and floors do not get wiped or mopped as you can still smell in the morning and all day trace of all kinds of body fluids. Bart would need to enforce also the ridership of patrons with valid Bart tickets and rides to ensure that seats are available legitimately as well as passenger comfort and safety. There are no Bart inspectors checking tickets. Compared to the trains in Asia and Europe, Bart needs to be massively improved hygiene and cleanliness side and ridership with valid tickets. I would pay a little bit more to make this happen. read more

Don't know how to gauge this station since this was my first ever BART station visit. I gave it 3 stars due to the condition of it. Just like most stations has trash around some graffiti etc. the only real complaint I have is if you use the elevator it is on the other side of the station kind of hidden. This is quite possibly my favorite BART station. It is always clean and quiet. I have never worried about my safety or security going to and from SF via this station. Bonus points: large parking lot for the days I'm running late, however close enough to walk from my apartment! No complaints here. read more
