Inside.

I'm sure if I reviewed this station this fall (2017) or shortly thereafter, I'd give it 4 stars instead of 3. Why? Because BART and the City of Berkeley have decided to give the Downtown Berkeley BART station a $7.6 million facelift. At the time of writing this review (winter 2017), the station is currently undergoing renovations. There will be new paving, landscaping, lighting, LED signs, and more. Construction is expected to be completed by September 2017 (they began August 2016). You can check out renderings of what the new street level main entrance will look like here: https://www.bart.gov/about/projects/dbp. As it stands now, Berkeley station is on par with the majority of BART's train stations -- dated and worn, yet functional. This is the busiest BART station in East Bay behind only the 12th Street/Oakland City Center station 4 stops to the south. Berkeley station is located one block west of UC Berkeley's campus. It's only a 10-minute walk from the station to Cal's basketball arena, Haas Pavilion. However, it's a hike from the station to the football stadium, California Memorial Stadium (about a 30-minute, 1.2-mile walk). On Cal game days, there's a free shuttle that picks up on Shattuck Ave in front of the Bank of America building. It drops fans off at the Greek Theater, which is just down the road from the stadium. After football games, shuttles pick up on Bancroft Way and drop fans off at the BART station. Traveling to/from Downtown Berkeley station to the Oakland airport costs $8.60 one-way per person and takes about 35-47 minutes. Traveling to/from Downtown Berkeley station to the San Francisco airport costs $9.55 one-way per person and takes roughly an hour.

This is a great BART station because they have a place for people to stop and pick you up and because they have lots of buses that stop here.

It was not…read more The door latch was broken and literally duck taped, causing the door to slam the entire trip--a clear safety issue. The table was jammed and unusable. For a room advertised as accessible and at a price of over $600 for a 4 hour ride, this level of disrepair is inexcusable. Also, the ticket was advertised as including meals, but there was no breakfast or snacks, and lunch was barely edible (reheated, stale food). Staff were kind, but the facilities and upkeep were not. For the price, this fell far short. I would not recommend booking an accessible room based on this experience. Save your money and just buy a coach ticket or better yet, just drive.

Did not use this visit. The kiosk/cafe that sells coffee/drinks was not opened, but they have vending machines for water/sodas and snacks. Did not use. The train was a little late, but we were adequately informed by the platform signage. No issues getting on the train. Coming back from Sacramento, the train was late and we didn't have time to even go into the station. It was directly to the bus to connect back to SF. Very quick boarding. And if you have larger luggage, they store it under the bus. Efficient service. Located on Horton and 59th Street.

I'll probably be getting on and off Amtrak at this station if I attended UC Berkeley or Berkeley City College. You are better getting something to eat and drink from a nearby restaurant, coffee shop or other eateries and use the restrooms there prior to coming to the train station. This is definitely the station to get on/off at if you or anyone you know is going to work in Berkeley, attending Berkeley City College or University of California, Berkeley! I'm more of an AC passenger if I have to rely on public transportation. Today I was meeting up with a high school classmate of mine for lunch in Berkeley. Ashby BART, 1:00 PM, corner of Martin Luther King Jr Way and Ashby. This station is okay...eerily quiet. I don't know what it is, but I had the "heebie, jeebie" in this station. It seems as though very few people use this station to ride BART to their destination. I usually can find the exit, but I got somewhat twisted in trying to get to the upper level to exit this station. Once I exited to the parking lot, I wasn't sure which direction to head to the meeting corner. I'm glad that my classmate called me to see where I was. Then there was a stranger (and a gentleman at that) who happened to be walking in the parking lot. He was headed in the same direction of my destination. I asked if I could walk along with him. He said okay. I thanked him for helping me out. When my classmate dropped me off, she told me to be careful and vigilant of my surroundings. The return trip on BART to Downtown Oakland from this station was somewhat weird. I had some guy standing about three feet to the left of me talking to himself - about breaking a leg. I did not feel comfortable because there was hardly anybody on the platform but two other people. I believe the next time I meet her for lunch in Berkeley, she can pick me up from the North Berkeley Station, which is a better and cleaner station.
