    Stomper at Rockridge BART Station
    Carol C.

Date: 6/11/2018 Time: 1:35 PM 68° Partly sunny I seldom stop at the Rockridge BART Station. This station is one of the cleaner ones in comparison to other stations in Oakland. The good thing about this station is the numerous shops, restaurants, pubs, markets, even a liquor store within walking distance. This station is also the last stop for the 51A coming from the Fruitvale BART station through Alameda, Oakland Chinatown, Downtown and Uptown Oakland, Auto Row, Oakland Tech, College Avenue. It's quite nice to have two options of getting to this station by public transportation, AC Transit or BART. The purpose of my visit to this station was to visit Stomper, the Oakland A's mascot. There are 50 Stompers throughout the City of Oakland and I am almost at the tail end of seeing Stomper in different settings and different areas of Oakland. There is also a Stomper in front of McNally's Irish Pub, which is about seven blocks from the Rockridge BART Station. Well, after visiting Stomper at McNally's, I could not make it back to the Rockridge BART station. My "puppies (feet) were crying" for some form of relief. However, I did manage to make it to a bus stop to catch the 51A home to Alameda.

The Rockridge BART station, mostly an outdoor station, is clean, safe, and functional. It's a relatively small station that handles only one rail line: Pittsburg/Bay Point to SF Airport/Millbrae. There are plenty of parking spaces and the daily fee to park is only $1.00. The pick-up/drop-off spaces are located directly at the station's entrance, near the escalators, so it's very convenient if you have a ride. The artistic Rockridge sign you see as you come down the escalators and out onto the street is neat. Restrooms are limited (only one per sex), but they're clean enough. The Rockridge neighborhood is nice and the station is located on College Ave, where there are many restaurants and retailers such as bookstores, boutiques, and furniture stores. Restaurants I recommend nearby the station include Crepevine, Cactus Taqueria, and Zachary's Chicago Pizza. Yum!

Great Location off of College in Rockridge. There are dozens of restaurants and shops just a few steps from the station. This is also a great station to dodge the commuters coming from SF headed in the Pittsburg Bay Point Direction. a lot of people exit this station on weekdays so boarding my bike here is way more comfortable then at West Oakland. Rockridge is also among the few stations that have a clean well stocked bathroom.

A Bart station! It's my local so my favorite. By Trader Joe's, and walking distance to all parts of College Ave. OK bathrooms. Just be careful where you park, the permit parking signs are far from clear. Passable bathrooms. Walk to the West of the platform for a great view of San Francisco.

What can I say about just another BART station? Well, I like that you can get to it from whatever side of it you are nearest too. There are stairs all the way around. I also like that there are several seats. Most importantly though, I like that I happened to be getting off there the other night just as the last light of day was leaving the city, and I was treated with a view of a beautiful orange, pink, and almost dark sky over the lights of the Oakland skyline. I went all the way to the edge to take pictures and got some of the colors stretched across above the tracks. It really was beautiful. The Verdict: Must post picks at some point!

Today, I still like stopping here whenever I visit the city. It's not cheap riding from San Jose/Milpitas to this station $10 one way now. I can still remember old times when riding only cost a few bucks. Powell BART station connects riders to all sorts of trains/muni destinations. Public restrooms are always available and staffs do their jobs well. You will see lots of foreign visitors and often hear people speaking in French, Spanish, German, etc. This is one of San Francisco's best stop. It's unfortunate that SF Westfield Shopping Center lost its businesses due to high crimes, high cost of doing business here, and other city regulations. This BART station really had it all years ago, especially when it was easily accessible after stopping here and walking distance to the food court and retail stores. I think Powell Station vibes are still positive for commuters. Advertisements are everywhere. This BART station still feels safe in public and it does feel like home of San Francisco center. I'm still glad that their tunnels and walkways are spacious and can accommodate major transportation for event days. JPMorgan Chase ads are highly visible.

To be fair, the fares are decent and when it works, it's the best way to get around. However, the consistency just isn't there. Almost every day there is a new 'issue' or delay. The stations are consistently dirty, and broken escalators have become the norm rather than the exception. What's most frustrating, though, is the customer service. I've approached station agents for help only to feel like I'm 'interrupting' their personal phone time or chats with colleagues. A little professional courtesy would go a long way. I want to keep supporting public transit, but the overall experience needs to improve.

I'm more of an AC passenger if I have to rely on public transportation. Today I was meeting up with a high school classmate of mine for lunch in Berkeley. Ashby BART, 1:00 PM, corner of Martin Luther King Jr Way and Ashby. This station is okay...eerily quiet. I don't know what it is, but I had the "heebie, jeebie" in this station. It seems as though very few people use this station to ride BART to their destination. I usually can find the exit, but I got somewhat twisted in trying to get to the upper level to exit this station. Once I exited to the parking lot, I wasn't sure which direction to head to the meeting corner. I'm glad that my classmate called me to see where I was. Then there was a stranger (and a gentleman at that) who happened to be walking in the parking lot. He was headed in the same direction of my destination. I asked if I could walk along with him. He said okay. I thanked him for helping me out. When my classmate dropped me off, she told me to be careful and vigilant of my surroundings. The return trip on BART to Downtown Oakland from this station was somewhat weird. I had some guy standing about three feet to the left of me talking to himself - about breaking a leg. I did not feel comfortable because there was hardly anybody on the platform but two other people. I believe the next time I meet her for lunch in Berkeley, she can pick me up from the North Berkeley Station, which is a better and cleaner station.

Though I work only a couple blocks away, I was not aware of this station especially since I drive to work daily. Recently, while both my brother's and my vehicle were being serviced, I needed to get to my office after doing some work errands and tasks in Chinatown. This was my perfect opportunity to try this mode of transportation. I caught the train from Chinatown and arrived here in less than ten minutes. It is a bit of a walk even with the escalators that I used. There are elevators available for those who prefer or need them (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=o0jpTcz1IH4oHBq4iX3rdQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). About ten minutes later, I was sitting at my office desk catching up on my work. It's sad to see the low ridership on this or perhaps I rode it on a non-peak time. Regardless, I hope that more locals and visitors take advantage of this which would likely ease the traffic gridlock that often frustrates people in the Chinatown and SOMA neighborhoods.

I'm from DC (Daly City) and wasn't familiar with the East Bay BART stations; especially two stations with identical sounding names. However, it was a fortuitous mistake as it's in a fairly safe neighborhood with a strip mall directly across the station. There's also a good number of underrated places to eat in the area. It doesn't have a huge parking lot, or even a huge parking structure like some stations, but it's adequate enough for the area and it's easy to navigate in and out off. It has a very secluded and intimate feel to it. I also like the fact that the rails are elevated above ground so you can view the surrounding neighborhoods and area. It makes one's commute much more pleasant if you look out the windows and see the sunrise or sunset on any given day. Structurally speaking, its minimal, simple design doesn't stand out. However, the plum trees planted in the parking lot separates it from the rest. Especially when the flowers bloom in late winter. They almost rival the Cherry Blossom trees when it comes to beauty.
