This is one of my favorites stations since this is the one I pop out of the most because of work. And its especially lovely because, with most of the construction done, I can see fnnch's finch just up Market St. read more

MUNI - Castro Station - Public Transportation Near Me - San Francisco, California

Muni transportation in SanFran is pretty affordable, $3 per ride, with a decent number of stations and hitting major tourist spots. But if you catch it during rush hour, be prepared to be packed in like a sardine and standing up. If you're sitting in the back, I'd recommend getting up and starting to walk toward the door or ringing the bell early so you're ready to get off. Luckily or at the beginning of the ride, I got the experience of semi empty bus...but at each stop then by the Financial District area, it was pretty much packed that it was also suffocating! It's an experience that everyone should try. Hahaha read more

I successfully tried out MUNI - Castro Station in San Francisco, CA for the first time on Thursday, 02/19/26, and I absolutely loved the experience. I was able to take the MUNI train from the Castro District to the Embarcadero Station, where it conveniently connects to BART. The ride was smooth, efficient, and made getting across the city quick and easy. At about $3 for a ride, it's also very affordable. The train itself had plenty of open seating, and the ride felt comfortable overall. Moving forward, I'll definitely be utilizing the MUNI system more often to get around different neighborhoods/districts in San Francisco. read more

as Metro stations go, this is a pretty nice one. It's usually immaculately clean. You don't see too many crazy vagrants wandering the platforms. Conveniently located on the corner of market and Castro. read more

This review is for MUNI in general not only this station. I wish they can put more security guards around the stations. Also if the system can be more on time. I have experience buses coming at same time right after one another when one of them was not on time. The system is far from being running as efficient as possible. The GPS tracking system is not very accurate at times. There should be accountability when the bus is late or delay. read more

I frequently use BART & MUNI to navigate the Bay Area. The MUNI has grown on me as it is sometimes late yet often not & gets me to where I want to go. The Castro MUNI station is clean & gets you right into the heart of the Castro. The most endearing quality of this MUNI station is the black & white photos paying homage to the patron saint of the Castro none other then Harvey Milk. One particularly poignant photograph is of the street flyer used to commemorate Harvey Milk's assassination as 40,000 people gathered w/ candles across the entire length of Market St marching somberly from the Castro to City Hall to pay honor Harvey Milk. read more

A clean and super convenient underground metro station. Trains come quickly between my neighborhood and here. It takes between 2 -3 minutes to travel between stations, way faster than even driving. Station agents always willing to help. Cleaning people are on the job! I recommend 100%. read more

Great transfer point to: F Market & Wharves, 24 Divisadero and 35 Eureka. I do have to admit this station is clean for the most part. Rossi's Deli is a few doors from here and a cookie store is right across the street. read more

Coming from a traveler's perspective, I'm sure most of the MUNI stations are super busy on weekdays, but when we were here during Thanksgiving weekend 2016, they were not. And it seemed like the Castro Street Station was the least crowded of them all. After experiencing the beautiful stations of Washington D.C., these can't compare in terms of cleanliness and architectural design, but, they get the job done. On a positive note, the stations are more easily accessible because they're not as deep underground. This station puts you in the heart of the Castro at Castro & Market streets. A huge rainbow flag flies proudly above. Nearby sights include the Castro Theater, shops, bars, and restaurants. MUNI pricing was cheap, around $2 I believe. Inside, the trains were in good shape, pretty clean, with loud and clear announcements. read more

This is the only Muni station with a green belt on Market St., San Francisco, CA. Approved by the planning department in 1973, this significant site was designed and built during Harvey Milk's last year's of his life. Milk was a transit advocate and the station needs to be preserved, not demolished and replaced. read more

I use this station on a weekly basis to get to my gigs. It's so easy to get to the Castro. Sure, the F runs on the street, but there's too many stops and you know how it can be riding the bus. It's only 4 stops from Powell, which makes this a zippy ~10 min commute. It is a very busy station, but can handle the crowd well. But the best part about this station that has earned it 5 stars? The brand new shiny RAINBOW escalators on the North end! So you can strut in your stiletto heels up a sparkling rainbow walkway into the wonderful world that is the Castro. Get your Snapchats ready, or else you'll find yourself running downstairs to ride it again. (Not that I would really mind). *Check my video out for proof of the awesomeness!* read more

Out of the downtown muni stations, this is probably one of the cleanest and calmest ones. Smack dab in the middle of a rainbow, it's close to the bars, restaurants and just 30 seconds away from the F-line. read more

I really like this metro station. First, it's actually easy to find. Second, it's neither too big nor too small. Some stations are needlessly cavernous; others just don't have enough space. This one has just the right amount of space for rush-hour traffic, but it's also comfortable (and not scary) when it's empty. It gets a bonus star for having the smell that Disneyland rides have. read more

MUNI - Castro Station - MUNI turning into a dog park - Public Transportation Near Me - San Francisco, California

I've been to better. I've been to worse. I'm certainly not going to compare it to Taiwan, Hong Kong, or multiple cities in Europe that have amazing public transportation. America is simply bass-ackwards in some areas, despite what Fox News would have you believe. That said, at least this station is smaller so there's not 100 homeless people laying around as you try to exit the train. And let's face it, us gays are a tidy, cleaner bunch. read more

This station is starting to show its age, with its silly "Castro" signs that resemble giant silver dildos in between the inbound and outbound tracks, and all that red-orange tile everywhere....egad, who chose that color! Time for a face lift, Mary! read more

These are going to my viewpoints from the perspective of a traveler/tourist. I live in Las Vegas and our public transportation system are horrible and very unreliable. San Francisco has fantastic public transportation. I frequent the Castro Muni Station since I stay in that area when I'm on vacation. Day or night I always feel safe, in which case I'm always a sole traveler. For the most part it's clean and nice. Trains run on time and are frequent. And there's always that nice voice overhead that tells you of an upcoming train. So if you're going to the Zoo or heading to Embarcadero this makes it very easy. read more

What a nooby station. The intercom is broken and will probably stay that way forever, so it sounds like the incoming trains are either heading to Embarcadero or Mission BUHHH. On the other hand, the location is great, and the little plaza that leads underground is named after Harvey Milk! Plus Hot Cookie is right nearby and opens very late. Overall, I guess I'm glad to take Muni to the Castro. read more

As far as Muni Metro stations go, this one isn't bad. But that's judging it among a pool of losers. It's in the Castro though, which gives it a few default points. The orange color everywhere is either 70's fab or drab, depending on your aesthetic sensitivities. The fairly easy access to downtown is commendable, when there are no kinks in the system... And as much as the kinks irk me, they don't irk me as much as one other characteristic unique to this station: from this geographic location, I have at least two modes at my disposal for going downtown, the metro or the above-ground F-line historic streetcar, but the two are not very well coordinated. It's quite annoying to pass by the waiting streetcar, descend to the platform of this station thinking the trip will be halved by being transported underground, to find that there is no train coming for a while (sometimes up to 15 minutes) or that there is some kind of major delay further up the route, when I could have hopped on the F waiting above, which in the meantime has just left. In those instances, I'd like to be informed AS I approach the station (it doesn't take much... just a simple LED display would do the trick), so that I can quickly turn around and hop on the streetcar before it leaves me to rot on this station's platform or in the tunnel further up the line. But this is just one of thousands of ignored opportunities throughout the Muni system that are hindered by the SFMTA's glacial and often backward pace towards "improving" service. And we San Franciscans sigh in acceptance of the fact that our transportation network continues to operate at a primitive level and undertake significant financial investments at taxpayer expense without any substantial improvement to rider experience (new faregates and Central Subway, anyone?). An investment of a couple hundred bucks could really jazz up the functionality and ease of using Castro as a transportation "hub". But who am I to question the intelligence and motivation of our highly paid public officials? It still gets 3 stars because, hey, it's better than what Muni has going on almost anywhere else in the city. read more

This review is not so much about this specific station. No. This is about MUNI in general. Actually, no. This is about public transportation in San Francisco at large. No, NO! This is about public transportation in all of Northern California! Public. Transportation. In. NorCal. Sucks. Seriously, people. With as much in taxes as California residents pay (which maybe goes to the highways?) I think it's due time to start appropriating towards more reliable and comprehensive municipal transit in San Francisco and JUST PLAIN OL' BETTER transit in the Bay Area as whole. Or at least between major cities. Case in point: it's a Saturday morning. I walk to the Castro station MUNI after leaving my beloved for the day. I desperately need to reach the Caltrain station at 4th & King in an hour to catch my train, for the next one leaves about an hour later. The difference is between having a comfortable amount of time to make a meeting in Palo Alto and a frantic, hellish ordeal trying to call ahead and explain why I'm late and what time I'll be there. - Time in Castro MUNI station before ANY train comes: 20 min. - Time in Castro MUNI station before MY train comes: 27 min. - Time on T-route MUNI towards Sunnyvale before hitting the first Embarcadero station: 22 min. - Time spent getting from the Embarcadero Station to 4th & King because of an unexplainable delay on the tracks, for which the conductor would not let people exit the car: 20 min. - Time my destined Caltrain was scheduled to depart the station: -9 min. ...and that's only my latest frustration. The list can literally go on and on. Dear San Francisco in particular and Bay Area in general: please do better. -East Coast Transplant read more

The station was obviously done up in the early '80's when hints of the 1970's color palette lingered and mixed with the mirrored silvery "Castro" signs that must have seemed so ultra-modern and futuristic back then. The station spills out onto Harvey Milk Plaza and is fairly easy to navigate if you know what "inbound" and "outbound" mean - still surprised at how many tourists can't figure it out. read more

The station is centrally located and is clean and safe compared to other stations. Train operation can be sketchy, so pay attention to the times. There's poor cell coverage at the bottom platform, so my advice is to use your cell phone at the top platform and then walk down once your train arrives. read more

MUNI - Castro Station - LOVE! - Public Transportation Near Me - San Francisco, California

Why are you so warm in the mornings? And it's not me, it's you. I know it's not me since I walk DOWNHILL to get to you. Soon as I get down your stairs, I feel like I'm crawling into the depths of a sauna. But not a 120 degree sauna. One that starts off relatively normal then increasingly gets warmer as the seconds go by. What's my typical routine when I'm in you? I stand on the edge of your platform, my eyes fixed on the tunnel coming from West Portal, hoping to see the white lights as they bounce against the side, letting me know you're about to pull up. For all intensive purposes, you're an average MUNI Metro station. It would be cool if the platform was in the middle so I could mingle with the folks heading out to the depths of San Francisco. But until then, I will stay on my side and wave like a stranger, metroing in the night. read more

I love this station and it's not because of the GREAT hospitality that I receive from the MUNI employees here. Nevertheless, if I want entertainment on a Friday night, I can come here and get it for free. First, the crowd here is so diverse. You got the young folks that reside in the Sunset and Richmond coming out here to party on a Friday night. You have the local happy gay men strolling with their partners clad with this season's Bloomingdale runway goods. You have the tourist taking the rail over from downtown LOST when there's really only two directions - in or out bound- and you got a lot of suburban folks visiting and saving themselves the headache by not driving into the Castro. Second, I love the location. It's a well positioned station. I can get lazy sometimes too and LOVE that they have WORKING escalators to get up to the main floor of the station from the platform level and another one that takes me to the street level. It's so convenient and a stone throw away from great eateries, the Castro Theater (beautiful work of art inside!), late night diners, a super cool 50s style barber shop, and many small businesses along the main drag of the Castro. Very cool bars and late night hangouts as well. Third, all the lines run through here. It's so fast. I timed a trip from Embarcadero Station to Castro Station. TOTAL time= 8 minutes. That does not included a 1 minute wait time. So fast! I was amazed and I love that it's so convenient. Fourth, pretty clean station compared to some of the other stations in the system. Staff could be friendlier, but perhaps this part of town is just too gay (too happy all the time and friendly) and it bothers them. Cmon now, MUNi workers, you want to smile don't you=) Lastly, I really like the advertisement at this station. Whenever I am waiting for a train, I love looking at the various ad campaigns in and around this station. From HIV prevention, to Proposition 8, to the next underground dance party, you would get all the ads here! I loved taking this for the then annual Halloween Party at the Castro. HOW I miss it! =X read more

For the most part, I will say that the employees here at this station are very nice. I have recently run into the nasty older gentleman that is an attendant there, and was treated so badly by him, that I wrote to MUNI management and Beaven Dufty! Up until that, it is muffled and just not understandable. read more

I like how friendly the station agents generally are. They usually always have a smile, and are happy to share information with you when they have a moment. The weekday mornings are definitely crazy but I do love how social people can be while they wait for their train. read more

Eh, it's a Muni station...a little grubby but not significantly worse than most others. My primary complaint is actually one that applies to most Muni stations...why can't they put any information about incoming/outgoing trains outside the gates, where they can actually help you before you've made the decision to burn your money and head downstairs? I don't know how many times I've gotten there on a busy weekday morning and gone through the gates only to get downstairs and find a few hundred people waiting for a train that won't be coming for another 20 minutes. Update, November 2012: The hobo-benches are gone! A handful of the extras from "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" still linger against the concrete walls along Hocker Alley, but their public bedroom has been stripped down to its brick floor. This should reduce the need for frequent powerscrubbing and eye-contact-avoidance. As the wife walked passed and rejoiced at the new cleanliness, some yuppie Castro-nik called her a fascist. Hopefully that's the last time she'll be insulted on her way through the walkway-which-until-recently-was-named-"Hocker Alley". Thanks, Muni! * * * * Previous one-star review: There is a street-level walkway above this underground muni station. The walkway provides access to the escalator from Collingworth street (one block west of Castro). This path is one of SF's best places to encounter and interact with the dregs of humanity. Here, convenient concrete benches offer free-range homeless creeps a chance to relax while hocking loogies (sp?) all over the sidewalk, smoking dope, sexually harassing my wife, and disciplining unlucky dogs kept prisoner with hemp-rope leashes. Of course, they only do this between naps on said benches. As an homage to the bums' preferred outdoor sport, we affectionately refer to this monument to our City's tolerance as 'Hocker Alley', as in: "Honey, I'm taking MUNI home from downtown, can you pick me up at the Castro Street MUNI Station?" "Sure sweetheart , I'll meet you at our usual spot at the end of Hocker Alley." "Awesome! I can't wait to dodge some flying hobo-phlegm! See you soon." read more
