The 2 car Siemens N Judah train inbound.
Mychael H.

The N Judah train is the second best train to ride on & also I like the new Siemens train running on that line. The N Judah Ocean Beach Train takes me to all my friends house living off the N line. The N also takes you to the Ocean Beach & the Golden Gate Park. Sometimes I go to the Irving district sunset area to buy some milk teas & sometimes Starbucks.

Our public transit lifeline to the rest of the city. I ashamedly don't use it as often as I could or should, but I really like knowing it is there and when I do use it -- I love it! The N-Judah line crosses the city from west to east, beginning at Ocean Beach (Judah and La Playa) and ending at 4th and King (which connects one to the Caltrain station and the Peninsula). It serves neighborhoods: Outer Sunset, Inner Sunset, Golden Gate Park, Cole Valley, Duboce Park, Castro/Upper Market, Western Addition, Downtown/Civic Center, Financial District, Chinatown, South of Market, and the Mission.

I ridne this line from one end to the other. When I am in San Francisco I stay near Church Station and I like that I don't have to go downstairs to catch the train. From there I can go to stops along Market Street all the way to the embarcadero and over to Cal-tran when I am heading to San Jose. I also often ride it outwards, to the Haight area and along Golden Gate Park all the way to the ocean. Its a great line for a tourist. It runs frequently enough I don't feel I need to know the schedule, I just wait and know the next train will soon be there. OK I get that it isn't very clean. but usually the seats are clear of clutter and well, I don't expect big city mass transit to be spotless. N-Judah you get me to some of my favorite places in SF. For that your the best! Thanks

Just the normal commute...

Quite possibly the worst form of public transportation I've ever been on. Taking this to work everyday and back has become the bane of my existence. The N is now commonly known to my friends and I as my nemesis, as you have to fight your way on each morning as if it's a survival of the fittest contest. Not only are the trains slow and don't come as often as they should in the "tech capital" for a morning commute, but once you're finally on the thing, no one knows how to let you on or off. How hard is it to add an extra car to each train or add a train to the morning commute schedule. This is now the third day that I've had two trains arrive full and now I'm stuck here waiting (and now late for work) SO THANK YOU muni! I should also add that getting a seat on the morning commute is the closest feeling to winning the powerball that I'll ever have. And I know I'm not alone.

There's a special place in hell for people who eat smelly foods on crowded trains. Hey lady, we're all hungry here! And I truly do not care to smell your egg salad sandwich, ok? Human society is held together by lies and delayed satisfaction, so get with the program! You could do with less feeding anyway. Trust me on that. There's a special place in hell for people who grab the suddenly open seat I was slyly advancing on. I saw it first and even if I didn't, I'm me and you are most likely not. So get off the seat, bro, it's mine. It has my butt prints all over it! There's a special place in hell for that woman on her cell phone who won't shut-up about how text messages are the new thing. If you really think that, start using them more often and leave the rest of us in peace. We really don't care about that new guy you're dating, how shy he is and how he hasn't gotten any in months. By the way, looking at you, I sincerely doubt his luck is gonna change any time soon. There's a special place in hell for every N train ever stuck at the entrance to a tunnel or just before that one invisible spot that's apparently the only place they're allowed to stop at that entire huge platform. I've never seen any such spot so I guess it's only visible to MUNI drivers with their advanced training in sensing just how late you are. Oh, and thank your for that incredibly slow roll into 4th and king; there's no view I like better than my train leaving the station. Just so we end on a positive note, it's a new year after all, there's a will-call ticket to heaven waiting for all the women on that crowded metro car who subtly checked me out while I wasn't looking. It's a shame I have no ego to build (it's been demolished long ago by your sisters) but had I been in possession of one, I'm sure it would have expanded an inch or two. I thank you for your efforts.

Ever since my parents moved to San Francisco, I have been taking the N Judah line from 19th and Judah. It goes from the Sunset to downtown and into SOMA. I think it is convenient. Sometimes it's frustrating to take if you are taking it to work everyday. It could be a little more dependable. Generally when I need to get to other parts of San Francisco like the Mission, it's dependable out near 19th. The other line similar to it is Taraval.

These are the 5 trains stopped dead on the tracks today. Utter dysfunction.

If you work downtown and live in the RiDi, you better get to know these buses, or you'll just be the chump on the regular 31 Balboa/38 Geary that gets the hour-long, reasonably stinky and ghetto tour of the city on the way to work. The 31 AX ain't great (I rarely get a seat in the morning, and some broads refuse to move to the back of the bus when it gets crowded), but it sure beats the regular 31 Balboa. FYI, the 31AX starts at the beach near the Safeway and the "Last local stop" is Balboa and Park Presidio. The next stop after *that* is Sansome & Montgomery. Not bad, right? Here's the weird thing though: I'm on the morning (and often evening) 31AX buses, with the same people, almost every day. All of us are going to our jobs in the FiDi or home to our bitchin' flats in the RiDi. I know half of their names since they all wear their hoity-toity company badges. Okay, you work for yahoo/stubhub/charles schwab! you're-so-fucking-cool-and-employed. We get it! But none of us ever talk to each other, even though we often see each other twice a day. However, now that the L Taraval has recently returned after a 5-year hiatus from construction woes, I will say that the L Taraval is now very convenient from Parkside to wherever you want to get downtown. Living about a block away from one of its handicapped stops, it is extremely convenient to hop on with my toddler in a stroller, and head on downtown. It runs every 10 mins on weekdays, and 15 on weekends, and actually seems like more often than that. I can contest to that, since I live so close, and can hear it passing all the time. The sound of the L Taraval (and all other Muni trains) is not annoying, but rather very soothing and comforting to hear, even late at night, and early in the morning. The street cars are clean (they didn't always use to be), and from my stop in the Parkside, only takes me 27 mins to get down to Embarcadero Station, which is quite handy for $2.50. In addition, the beautification project is quite pleasurable, with dessert plants, light gravel, newly planted trees, and string lights upon its path. It can be truly charming for those who are open to it. L Taraval - stands for how LOVELY it is!

Just when we get used to the latest update to service, it gets changed. I appreciate that it was one of the few lines available at the beginning of Shelter-in-Place even if it switched from a LRV to a bus because I was still going to the office daily. In fact, it was a beautiful ride because of the views of the skyline while twisting down Portola. But while other LRV lines have been switched back, the L is still a bus. Which wasn't so horrible when I could still take it to the Castro/Duboce Triangle area. Then someone at Muni management had the bright idea to make it a glorified shuttle between the zoo and West Portal. So now I have to get off the bus, trudge into West Portal station and switch to an inbound LRV. Which is alright when there's a train waiting. But there are untold number of times when the train takes off just as we go through the fare gate or we have to wait for one. But the "update" that makes me laugh the most is the L Bus Special that started in October. It runs between the zoo and the Embarcadero on weekdays from 10am to 6pm approximately every 50 minutes. Yup. 5-0. Brilliant. I can't utilize it to get to work but maybe to get home? Well, in the 2.5 months it's been running, I've only been able to catch it 5 times. Tonight would've been #6 and the NextBus app said it would be at the stop 5 minutes after I got off work. Perfect since I was carrying bags of gifts home. Except after I rushed 3 blocks to make it to the stop on time, the bus bypassed the stop. Sucks. So I trudged with all my bags down into the station, got on a S shuttle to West Portal, then trudged to catch the L "shuttle". So right now I'm not a huge fan of the L. It's still gets me to work but it has gotten so má fan.

So only one bus to catch on Haight Street at Divisadero. And since the already truncated 21's route was so pathetically short and not useful since they messed with it after COVID, what's the point of this now? And then the bus line actually came, and it's actually ridiculously convenient for me, much more convenient than the old 6 used to be. I still have my issues with it. The main one is for my Hayes Street neighbors who live west of Masonic Avenue. How do they catch the bus now? They either have to walk all the way to Stanyan Street and wait forever for a not terribly useful 33-Ashbury/18th Street, or they have to walk uphill to the 5-Fulton. That's poor planning, especially for people with limited mobility who have trouble traversing steep hills. The entire point of a bus on Hayes Street is that between Stanyan and Scott Streets, it's more or less flat--or at least as flat as a half-mile in San Francisco can realistically be. But another thing happened when they killed my line and moved the 6 over to my street; I can now ride the bus almost doorstep to doorstep both to the Upper Haight and to my brother's house. That has been super useful to me--maybe even too useful, because when I'm lazy, I sometimes take the bus to Free Gold Watch instead of doing my normal walk through the Panhandle, which is better for my health, although sometimes not for my bottomless irritation with my fellow San Franciscans. I still want to rage against the dying of the light--the light in this case being a familiar old bus line--but I would be lying if I said that this change hasn't been useful to me personally. Muni could actually solve most of this problem by having either the 6 or the 7 stay on Stanyan and then turn onto Hayes (which ends at Stanyan) and stay on that street until it turns wherever Downtown. But that would make too much sense, and the SFMTA is too busy spending its money painting huge red zones all over the city to do what's right for local bus riders and drivers alike. This should be a three-star review, but the added convenience is worth at least a Yelp star.
