My experience is usually positive. In the height of Covid I chose to walk during rush hour, just too many people crammed together. You try to not touch anything or breath next to the guy leaning on you during every jerk of the train. Church street stop either arrives every 10-15 minutes, back-to-back, or where the hell is it, oh great, it broke down & we have to transfer to a bus. I like that they post arrival times at the boarding areas. Bottom line, I'm able to get places, usually on time, and it's way faster, cheaper, & better on the environment than driving & finding parking downtown. read more

I was on an adventure. I needed to go to an appointment in Golden Gate Park. I understood parking was hard to find and the lots were expensive. Using the BART Trip Planner I found the route there via the N Judah. I wanted to be on the Ocean Beach train. Inside the Powell Street Station, the signage confused me at first. "Outbound or Inbound?" I sheepishly asked the agent for directions. "Which way is it to the Ocean?" The agent snickered, "There's two oceans. Where do you want to go?" Fine, Outbound. Actually it didn't matter. At the platform I saw the Ocean Beach or Ball Park directions. Got it! Easy to pay the fare using my Clipper Card and I was going in the right direction. A two train car stopped and I'm on my way. I knew to get off at Irving St and 9th. The signage once again confused me. Judah and 9th is the stop listed. On this particular train, I couldn't here the operator announce the stops. Good thing I know a bit about The City and got off at the right stop. My destination was 1/2 mile away so I walked. The ride didn't take very long and it was a fun ride a glimpse of local folks and flavor. The return ride was uneventful and I proudly felt new confidence. I used to drive this thing. No seriously I did. Whether I was a passenger or employee I had a love hate relationship with this line. For as long as I lived in the Bay Area the N Line is the first thing I see in SF. It's either this or the T line. I like this line because I get access to the new trams. These trams are really gorgeous and futuristic. They are faster than the regular vehicles that many people are accustomed to. The N line is more of a backroad of SF type of line because it doesn't follow others. More what so ever this tram eventually is full of locals and students from USF during the midday hours. The bad news: despite having new tram vehicles, the seats are not what they are cut out to be. People have a tendency to slide when the tram breaks hard. Configuration is done Asian style (all sideways). Doors do not react well to some situations. read more

The N Judah train is the second best train to ride on & also I like the new Siemens train running on that line. The N Judah Ocean Beach Train takes me to all my friends house living off the N line. The N also takes you to the Ocean Beach & the Golden Gate Park. Sometimes I go to the Irving district sunset area to buy some milk teas & sometimes Starbucks. read more

The N Shuttle that substitutes for the N-Metro car is the W-O-R-S-T transport operating on SF Muni in my experience during CoVid19 SIP. The shuttle runs along Market Street and picks up denizens of that thoroughfare & Tenderloin vagrants. They ride to the Haight Ashbury commercial area to panhandle, find similar homeless. Is there a clinic they need to access? Don't know. The locals who live in the Haight, Cole Valley, Inner & Outer Sunset have to put up with the crowds of unkept people & their dogs. The hardworking, stressed out hospital staff at UCSF have to ride a crowded bus to/from BART or to get to CALTRAIN. Fair? No! The seats are filled and no social distancing is happening. Why doesn't Muni get more buses out on these key lines?? Oh yeah, we're supposed to stay at home. But people have to go to doctors, dentists and such to maintain their health. The small businesses that are allowed to reopen have employees who ride the bus too. All these folks (and you & me) risk their health riding the N-Shuttle on Muni. Does Muni care??? Come on Muni! Having moved from the 'burbs, where we had to drive to almost every destination, to the Cole Valley/Haight Ashbury neighborhood, we love the public transportation in San Francisco. We take the bus or trolley almost everywhere we want to go. Today we walked from Haight St. to the ocean through Kezar and Golden Gate Park to the ocean. Two blocks to Judah & the N Judah back to Carl & Cole. It felt so good to get to sit down and ride back! We have taken different bus lines to various locations in the City & now rarely take the car out at all. It does take a bit of experience to feel confident, but the Moovit app will outline everything for you. Morning commute hours on the N Judah are very crowded & there are a lot of people who don't pay their fare. It's sad that people do take advantage of the system, which might be upgraded even more with revenue. read more

Yuck. The N Judah is just lame. Lame to the power of 4, multiplied by 12. Seriously in the morning - this is by far the worst mode of transportation to work. Everyone is aggro. Everyone is stressed out. It's hard to find a seat. And it usually always ends up getting stuck in the stupid tunnel right before Van Ness. The N Judah's negativity in the morning has the potential to make you chew your gum a little harder (once some girl loudly even asked me to stop chewing my gum on the N - since she claimed it gave her a headache....) it can make you bite your lip a little harder, do incessant involuntary eye rolling, and can easily induce those annoying (for everyone around you) - deep sighs. Why add to your daily work stress by partaking in the too crowded, not enough air ride - that is the N Judah commute? Just say No. There are far too many other quality rides that can take you to your destination. Like the 6. Like the 71. That being said - I can't give the N Judah one star - because on the weekend - it is a sweet ride to my friend's place by the ballpark, it - as the best to my knowledge, does not prohibit food or drinks, and on Halloween and New Years - the N Judah may be up there as being one of the most unique costume viewing and potentially pre-gaming (on New Year's) rides in the city. I ridne this line from one end to the other. When I am in San Francisco I stay near Church Station and I like that I don't have to go downstairs to catch the train. From there I can go to stops along Market Street all the way to the embarcadero and over to Cal-tran when I am heading to San Jose. I also often ride it outwards, to the Haight area and along Golden Gate Park all the way to the ocean. Its a great line for a tourist. It runs frequently enough I don't feel I need to know the schedule, I just wait and know the next train will soon be there. OK I get that it isn't very clean. but usually the seats are clear of clutter and well, I don't expect big city mass transit to be spotless. N-Judah you get me to some of my favorite places in SF. My main complaint about the N Judah is that it's slooooow! Once it goes above ground, it feels like it's moving at a snails pace! I normally hop on the N Judah from downtown when I'm heading over to 9th and Irving, so the underground portion isn't too bad. It can get a little crowded after work. Especially if the trains are shorter, but it's honestly nothing compare to some other buses I've been on. Wow,...as a visitor to San Francisco, I can see why Muni is one of the worst public transportation systems in the country and why they are losing millions of dollars. The bus drivers are rude. The only way you can pay on the bus is using a clipper card. You cannot pay via cash. There is a cash slot but is enclosed by a plastic shield where the driver sits. I witnessed only 2 passengers that actually paid, everyone else rode for free. For visitors, I would suggest using ride share services or taxi, the public transportation system will scare the wits out of you, especially if you encounter a homeless person on the bus or light rail. read more

Quite possibly the worst form of public transportation I've ever been on. Taking this to work everyday and back has become the bane of my existence. The N is now commonly known to my friends and I as my nemesis, as you have to fight your way on each morning as if it's a survival of the fittest contest. Not only are the trains slow and don't come as often as they should in the "tech capital" for a morning commute, but once you're finally on the thing, no one knows how to let you on or off. How hard is it to add an extra car to each train or add a train to the morning commute schedule. This is now the third day that I've had two trains arrive full and now I'm stuck here waiting (and now late for work) SO THANK YOU muni! I had to commute on this line for my brief second job and it would take anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes for my train to show up then would habitually when coming back to Powell get stuck in a tunnel. Some of those drivers though...they see your ass running for them and they don't give a shit! If anything, I swear they press on the gas pedal (or flip that switch, whatever) just to make sure they are zipping past you as you try your darnest to catch up to them, risking life and limb just to get on board. Major complaint - due to the close proximity to the park, there are many homeless people on that thing. Morning commutes can be rough when the train is already crowded and no one wants to stand anywhere near the back because of the horrid stench coming from there. But hey - it takes me where I need to go, and that's why I'm sticking by it. And even when it's dark outside and I can't see a thing, I can tell when I'm almost home just by the movement and the hills (or lack thereof). It's my MUNI. read more

Ever since my parents moved to San Francisco, I have been taking the N Judah line from 19th and Judah. It goes from the Sunset to downtown and into SOMA. I think it is convenient. Sometimes it's frustrating to take if you are taking it to work everyday. It could be a little more dependable. I moved here 4 years ago and I still really want to use my car less by using MUNI. Sunday afternoon June 12th I waited more than 40 minutes for 2 scheduled N Judahs neither of which came, just more and more time added to the ETA and no train. I ended up paying for a Lyft so I wouldn't miss work. This isn't the first time this has happened and is a huge fiscal "F*ck you" from MUNI to to someone trying to get to work. It is not sustainable on my budget. My job doesn't allow for tardiness, if I'm not there the job isn't being done and I need my job. Sometimes the MUNI cars are so full the driver won't stop for anyone, and sometimes there are not in service cars which stop but won't open/no way to board. Today June 21st around 5:30 pm there were 5! FIVE!!!?! N Judah trains backed up from 9th and Judah westward out of sight into the sunset, maybe more than 5 because it went over the hill. MUNI, please tow the blockage out of the way, and keep it moving! Just have any functioning contingency plan, instead of this predictable dysfunction please. I love the ideal of public transit and want to participate in it fully but I cannot rely on MUNI and do not trust it. MUNI is a recreational use only option for me now, for when I don't have to be downtown for work on a schedule. NYC trains don't run on schedule either, but they keep them moving way better than this, they can divert dead trains and there are many more trains being cycled through as opposed to one train malfunction stopping the entire line. No one should wait outside for an hour for a train- I'm not disabled or feeble so I can only imagine how much worse it is for those who are. This city will not get more cars off its streets if there is no functional transit option to replace motorists driving. MUNI I'm rooting for you but you fail me regularly. But the N takes me to places I want to go. It's official. After living in SF for a year and 2 months, I can safely conclude that the N, does in fact transport the hottest people into the city between 9:20 and 10:15am every morning. Each and every time I've hopped on the N, I've fallen in love. I gotta stick up for my old ride, if only because I am delirious from lack of sleep and pining for my former neighborhood. She isn't the wretch that others have made her out to be. The N may not come by as frequently as I would like, and she lets even the most unpleasant men ride her late into the night. She may welcome too many sweaty strangers into her warm embrace during the prime commuting hours, and sometimes she turns into a J Church no matter how well I treat her, but I love her still. If you have ever experienced the N pilot-extraordinaire who amuses us all by singing, joking, and lisping Donald Duck impressions into the microphone between announcing stops with finesse and savoir-faire, then you revere the N Judah as your muse. If you too have foolishly braved the 6-Parnassus from the Financial District to Golden Gate Heights, rather than hop on the N and transfer out in the burbs (9th and Judah), then you know the comfort of basking in her (relatively) peaceful refuge. If you have ever taken the N out west to Ocean Beach or East to a ball game, you can admire the length of her legs. If you have ever gotten off the N ten stops too early because it just so happens to stop in front of Burgermeister in Cole Valley on Cheap Chicken Mondays, then you too feel all tingly at the reminiscence of the graceful and well-placed curves of her route. Like a lot people I take the N Judah from the Sunset to the Financial District and back again daily. No, biking is not a viable alternative and neither is driving. The morning commute isn't so bad because I get on at the first stop and always get to stake out a seat. The commute home is terrible. If you like being wedged into someone's armpit while trying to hang onto a metal bar then the N Judah evening commute is for you! I invented some tips to make the evening commute home better. When I say better, I mean getting a seat, so I can use the long commute time to study or get some work done. Or half-sleep. I actually live in the Outer Sunset (so unlike some people who live near Church & Duboce or Carl & Cole, I actually have to be on the train for 50+ minutes) my tips: 1) I never get on at Montgomery Station, and especially not at Powell. I always take an Inbound train to Embarcadero or further, hop off and then get on an Outbound N. 2) If I see a single car outbound N I never get on. Why are they even running single car N's during rush hour? It's almost guaranteed they will be switching it back at Hillway, 19th, or Sunset Blvd. 3) If I see an N with another N following it, I always get on the second one because the first one will, no doubt, be switching back before my stop 4) If you can't get a seat, try to stake out a standing spot in the middle accordion part of the train where it "bends" . Or if you're boarding at one of the underground Market St. stops, try to hang out near the door where you boarded because once the train goes above ground people will start boarding on the OTHER side and you can lean on the door. 5) Get rich and hire a chauffeur so you don't have to take the N Judah anymore (I'm still working on this one) read more

I really want to give the N-Judah five stars. I was about to give it five stars, but then I remembered my duty to you as a fair arbiter of fact. It probably deserves three or even two stars, but I'm not that fair. The N-Judah simultaneously represents everything that is right and wrong with Muni. As the straightest-shot Metro line, one which travels from a mainly residential area to the Financial District, it is the model of no-frills get-me-to-my-office-on-time 9-to-5ness. Yet as an overcrowded sardine can, it drives people away from Muni and into their cars. I've crammed in with the rest of the working stiffs at rush hour. It's packed outbound even at Embarcadero. People are really rude on it, and I can understand why. But it's such a joy at other times. It may be loud; it may kill people on occasion, but it literally owns Judah Street for most of the Sunset, and there's something nice about that. There's also something magical about waiting for an inbound N-Judah at Duboce Park. When the train comes out of the tunnel, it makes the whole area seem even more Mr. Rogers- and Disneylandish than it already is. Some words of advice. If you plan on not paying your $1.50 to ride the N-Judah, be aware that they do check for proof of purchase on this train, especially on weekends. I've seen people get ticketed, and it's not cheap. If you need to pay (meaning you don't already have a transfer or Fast Pass), make sure to board at the front door of the first car. read more

She's that annoying friend that you can't help but see on a regular basis. You know the one, often unapologetically late, and when she does bother to show up, she's a bit off, messy, and there are definite whiffs of alcohol. And there's almost always some type of drama going on. She doesn't care about your schedule, your time commitments, you're all hers, at least for a while. She's frustrating as hell that way. But you need her, even appreciate her sometimes, making it worth the frustration, or able to put up with it for another day anyway. It's some messed up relationship, hell, you even give her money. But those days she's on her game, no delays, no drama, you remember why you keep going back for more. You give your seat to the elderly, pregnant, trannies, and kids. cheapest way to site see SF, so what if you ride it over and over back and forth, it's cool. You are not the only weirdo on board. You get lost easily if you don't pay attention. Don't fall asleep, you might get grope, bag stolen, or worse a crazy bum ask you for money. You better have your muni pass or else you get fined! Another thing, please don't POST CRAIGSLIST- PERSONAL AD ON THE STOPs, SAVE YOURSELF THE EMBARRASSMENT! YOU WILL BE LAUGH AT! Last but not least, it's good for an hour and a half. read more

I hate you, N Judah. I hate your schedule, and how 5 trains come at once, then none at all for 30 minutes. I hate the insane woman whom you somehow deemed as qualified to pilot a LRV full of San Francisco residents from Bay to Beach during rush hour. A woman who NEVER, EVER stops screaming over the loud speaker. She screeches and hollers, she wears knock off Louis Vuitton scarves and hats to match her poo-poo colored uniform. She commands her riders to "wait for the next train! there are a lot of people on this one!" and "don't crowd the train! stand back! i can't drive!" I was not aware that driving forward on tracks required checking one's left-rear blindspot!? I hate the N Judah, and while I love my house in the Sunset, and have been very happy there, upon the recent discovery that I would have to move within the year my very first thought was: "Fuck Yeah! NO MORE N!!!" read more

Now that I really depend on this train, the rate at which it simply doesn't show up or is at a minimum the most overcrowded and least frequently appearing train, or gets stuck in an f'ing tunnel for 45 minutes on a Friday evening is absolutely unacceptable. Can't we all just pay $5 more for our passes and get some more trains running? Seriously, it's not worth my time. And sadly, the 71 and 6 don't do much good unless it's the wee hours, because between the patrons and the multitude of stops I almost always am forced to get off mid-way and have a glass of wine at UVA in order to bare the rest of the trip. read more

I feel a little strange writing a Yelp review for a piece of public transportation - after all, who yelps in order to decide what train they're going to take that day? - but since the chances that my complaints will actually be heard by SFMTA are lower even than the chances I will have a pleasant ride on this infinitely frustrating streetcar line, I figured I'd vent here (and maybe help some others who have suffered the same fate as I). I first started taking the N-Judah every day from the Inner Sunset to Embarcadero station when I got a job near the Ferry Building. I knew there were some bus options, but figured that they would get caught in too much traffic for it to be worth not walking the extra few blocks to get to the N-Judah stop. I knew the Judah had a bad reputation, but I figured it had to be the best option...right? The first few weeks I didn't see what all the complaining was about. It was relatively on time, and got me to work in a decent amount of time. But then, everything started to go precipitously downhill. Inbound delays at the Church-Noe tunnel, when the train would just sit there for 5, 10, 15 minutes with no explanation. But outbound is where it really shows its true colors. At least once a week you will stand in Embarcadero Station for 20 + minutes with no N-Judah in sight, while 3 of every other line goes by and half a dozen N-Judahs go the other direction. People start to get antsy. 5 Muni employees will be standing around joking with each other. Then when one finally does show up, people crowd into it like it's the last helicopter out of Vietnam. What happens then? Well, the train can't move because the operator can't close the doors! Why can't he close the doors? Because there's so many damn people that the train is bursting at the seams! Why are there so many people? Because no train came for half an hour during the BUSIEST TIME OF THE DAY FOR TRANSIT. So you can see the cycle really just compounds on itself over and over again. How many weekends have started off horribly because this? How many bad work days have become worse because of this? The best part - nobody at Muni seems to recognize the problem. Which brings me to my last point: payment. On the in-bound train, I'd say AT LEAST one out of three people does not pay the fare (that's being kind). I don't know what pisses me off more - the fact that people apparently think that not paying has no effect on service (I'd like to point out that my monthly pass cost went up recently, not that any of those people would notice), or the fact that Muni CLEARLY does not care about the fact that nobody pays. Not to defend Muni, but if you're one of those people who doesn't pay: Firstly, how are they going to know how many trains to send if they don't know how many people are using them? And second, every time you don't pay, the more everyone else is going to eventually have to pay, and the less and less likely it is we're going to have this service at all in the future. Anyway, I decided I needed a new route to work since the N-Judah was quite literally lowering my quality of life. I have a new route and not only does it get me to work quicker, it makes my day that much better. I'll share it with those of you who live closer to Lincoln Way and commute downtown: hop on the 16X express bus on Lincoln. Get off on the first stop near downtown (Oak & Franklin). Walk 2 blocks to Van Ness Station. Get on the first Muni that comes and head to your destination. On the way back: take whatever Muni comes first at your station to Van Ness. Walk to Fell & Gough and take the 16X home. I guarantee you'll be a happier person with more free time. I'm giving it 2 stars and not 1 because when it actually works (few and far between, but it does happen) it's quite nice. But don't count on that happening when you need it most. read more

When this line is working or shows up, it is an awesome way to get to downtown or back home in the Sunset. The key part of this statement though is when this happens. For you see, more often than not, the N line is experiencing some sort of issue, more often than not at the tunnel by Church and Duboce. I'm not sure what could constantly be causing this but at least once a week, there is always some form of delay there. Then there's the ride back outbound after work. For some reason, this line does not seem to show up as often as the other lines. In addition, it never seems to show up on the screen indicator until its moments away from arriving, which I don't seem to understand why. And due to the high amounts of people needing to ride this line, when it does show up, everyone tries to squeeze on that it's almost impossible to get on the bus, thus sometimes forcing you to wait an additional 15 minutes for the next one (only to have that packed too). While I'm sure all the MUNI lines have their fair share of problems, and a lot it could be due to budget cuts, the N line just frustrates me and my fellow riders too much too often. read more

Just moved from the outer outer sunset to outer sunset (across Sunset Blvd and up a few blccks) and I must admit: THE N JUDAH kicks the L TARAVAL several hundred times over!!!! Seriously, I fucking hate MUNI just as the next rider, but I've been forced to deal with the L for 2 years and all the glory that is west portal, and it fucking blows. The N Judah is like my saving grace! Commute to work is now 20 minutes shorter, even though I've only moved 7 blocks, and people are friendlier and you get a totally different crowd -- young working professionals during rush hour on the N vs stinky homeless guys or an abudance of pushy grandmas with bags on the L. So, the muni still sucks, but the N is wayyyy better than the L, so I'm stoked. read more
