I like that they post arrival times at the boarding areas. Bottom line, I'm able to get places, usually on time, and it's way faster, cheaper, & better on the environment than driving & finding parking downtown.

Using the BART Trip Planner I found the route there via the N Judah. I wanted to be on the Ocean Beach train. Inside the Powell Street Station, the signage confused me at first. "Outbound or Inbound?" I sheepishly asked the agent for directions. "Which way is it to the Ocean?" The agent snickered, "There's two oceans. Where do you want to go?" Fine, Outbound. Actually it didn't matter. At the platform I saw the Ocean Beach or Ball Park directions. Got it! Easy to pay the fare using my Clipper Card and I was going in the right direction. A two train car stopped and I'm on my way. I knew to get off at Irving St and 9th. The signage once again confused me. Judah and 9th is the stop listed. On this particular train, I couldn't here the operator announce the stops. Good thing I know a bit about The City and got off at the right stop. My destination was 1/2 mile away so I walked. The ride didn't take very long and it was a fun ride a glimpse of local folks and flavor. The return ride was uneventful and I proudly felt new confidence. I love public transportation and the N Judah works for me!

However, now that the L Taraval has recently returned after a 5-year hiatus from construction woes, I will say that the L Taraval is now very convenient from Parkside to wherever you want to get downtown. Living about a block away from one of its handicapped stops, it is extremely convenient to hop on with my toddler in a stroller, and head on downtown. It runs every 10 mins on weekdays, and 15 on weekends, and actually seems like more often than that. I can contest to that, since I live so close, and can hear it passing all the time. The sound of the L Taraval (and all other Muni trains) is not annoying, but rather very soothing and comforting to hear, even late at night, and early in the morning. The street cars are clean (they didn't always use to be), and from my stop in the Parkside, only takes me 27 mins to get down to Embarcadero Station, which is quite handy for $2.50. In addition, the beautification project is quite pleasurable, with dessert plants, light gravel, newly planted trees, and string lights upon its path. It can be truly charming for those who are open to it. L Taraval - stands for how LOVELY it is!

Sadly, I'm dropping a star for the L. Sometimes I wonder if Muni management is just toying with…read morethose of us in the Parkside/edge of Outer Sunset area. Just when we get used to the latest update to service, it gets changed. I appreciate that it was one of the few lines available at the beginning of Shelter-in-Place even if it switched from a LRV to a bus because I was still going to the office daily. In fact, it was a beautiful ride because of the views of the skyline while twisting down Portola. But while other LRV lines have been switched back, the L is still a bus. Which wasn't so horrible when I could still take it to the Castro/Duboce Triangle area. Then someone at Muni management had the bright idea to make it a glorified shuttle between the zoo and West Portal. So now I have to get off the bus, trudge into West Portal station and switch to an inbound LRV. Which is alright when there's a train waiting. But there are untold number of times when the train takes off just as we go through the fare gate or we have to wait for one. But the "update" that makes me laugh the most is the L Bus Special that started in October. It runs between the zoo and the Embarcadero on weekdays from 10am to 6pm approximately every 50 minutes. Yup. 5-0. Brilliant. I can't utilize it to get to work but maybe to get home? Well, in the 2.5 months it's been running, I've only been able to catch it 5 times. Tonight would've been #6 and the NextBus app said it would be at the stop 5 minutes after I got off work. Perfect since I was carrying bags of gifts home. Except after I rushed 3 blocks to make it to the stop on time, the bus bypassed the stop. Sucks. So I trudged with all my bags down into the station, got on a S shuttle to West Portal, then trudged to catch the L "shuttle". So right now I'm not a huge fan of the L. It's still gets me to work but it has gotten so má fan.

The bus goes down market and then through the Haight before going into Outer Sunset. Given the amount of stops through busy neighborhoods, I think this bus should be bigger. I've been packed like a sardine on my regular bus route, but it never seems this bad. Also, the amount of personalities on this bus is interesting. We had someone talk to themselves the whole way, a girl constantly whack me with her long hair and a guy that wouldn't move. The hair whacking was unnecessary though. Since the seats in the front are low and the girl had long hair, every time she moved, her hair would get in my face. So only one bus to catch on Haight Street at Divisadero. And since the already truncated 21's route was so pathetically short and not useful since they messed with it after COVID, what's the point of this now? And then the bus line actually came, and it's actually ridiculously convenient for me, much more convenient than the old 6 used to be. I still have my issues with it. The main one is for my Hayes Street neighbors who live west of Masonic Avenue. How do they catch the bus now? They either have to walk all the way to Stanyan Street and wait forever for a not terribly useful 33-Ashbury/18th Street, or they have to walk uphill to the 5-Fulton. That's poor planning, especially for people with limited mobility who have trouble traversing steep hills. The entire point of a bus on Hayes Street is that between Stanyan and Scott Streets, it's more or less flat--or at least as flat as a half-mile in San Francisco can realistically be. But another thing happened when they killed my line and moved the 6 over to my street; I can now ride the bus almost doorstep to doorstep both to the Upper Haight and to my brother's house. That has been super useful to me--maybe even too useful, because when I'm lazy, I sometimes take the bus to Free Gold Watch instead of doing my normal walk through the Panhandle, which is better for my health, although sometimes not for my bottomless irritation with my fellow San Franciscans. I still want to rage against the dying of the light--the light in this case being a familiar old bus line--but I would be lying if I said that this change hasn't been useful to me personally. Muni could actually solve most of this problem by having either the 6 or the 7 stay on Stanyan and then turn onto Hayes (which ends at Stanyan) and stay on that street until it turns wherever Downtown. But that would make too much sense, and the SFMTA is too busy spending its money painting huge red zones all over the city to do what's right for local bus riders and drivers alike. This should be a three-star review, but the added convenience is worth at least a Yelp star.

When I had an internship in Oakland and grad-school classes at night at USF, I used to catch this bus in the Financial District and get dropped off as close as possible to Lone Mountain. It does serve its purpose, and I do love that it doesn't pick up or drop off anyone for what seems like miles and miles and miles. But when it gets to the end of that express portion, it makes up for its former speediness with some ridiculously long stops. OK, maybe it deserves four stars, but I'm keeping it at three because the Financial District regulars are really mean. Yes, I realize that the general rule is that people who have been waiting longer should get to board the bus first, but no, there really is no line, and I don't feel bad at all for "ruining my [the angry guy in the gray suit's] entire day, you fat idiot." Honestly, I got called a fat idiot in public by a guy who had to endure the horror--the horror!--of standing on the bus exactly seven inches in front of where I was standing. They have been trained well by UCSF. They even called the UCSF Jitney (local UCSF shuttle for Mission Bay campus) to transport me from the shuttle stop there to the main medical building at 1825 4th Street. Their mobile app is also very organized and fast as well. It has all the timetables, and well as way to track to shuttles in real time, so I know exactly when they are coming. They run every 20 minutes or so. If my review sounds glowing, it is because it is true. The only negative thing I have to say is the Grey route between Parnassus Heights and Mission Bay does tend to get crowded, so there is standing room only if you board late. But you can sit down on most of the other routes. I also wish the shuttle stop at Mission Bay was a little closer to the main medical building, but they are doing construction, so they had to move it a little farther away.
