If you want the feel of your neighborhood bar while away visiting West Point, stop at South Gate Tavern. Food was ok, stay away from the friend ravioli. They definitely have cold beer but even better, the conversations w the bartenders. Both made it feel like I was a regular for years. Hmm, an 'Irish' Tavern? Just because you can pour Guiness, don't make it an 'Irish' Tavern. No Irish food, and no menu at all!!! Food comes from a soso joint attached to the tavern, next door. Do not go to this place for a meal as the food from the joint that supplies the food for the tavern is bad!! The good, is get a beer and walk around looking at all the things hanging on the walls. Lots of old memorabilia. Wish I could split this review into two different reviews, as the beer is cold, and the walls are great to look at and museum like, but Irish and Tavern are very Non excitant! Definitely a local hole in the wall, but in a good way. I liked the charm and owners of this tiny tavern. Old school in that they only accept cash, but find an ATM at the back if you don't come with cash. The front bar area is narrow and cramped, but the other two rooms have tables and are a little more spaced. At the front there is an old style jukebox that supplies the music for the bar. It was fun to pick out our music throughout the night. The bar has an Irish feel and vibe. The bartender (and owner I assumed) was friendly and was turning out drinks quickly all night. read more

If you love a good dive bar, you have to love this place. Nestled right next to West Point, it is the perfect local pub that is just dripping in unpretentious charm. The walls of this place are covered with artifacts and memorabilia from days gone-by, and you can hours sipping a brew and checking out the local color. This bar also boast some surprisingly good grub, and my friends and I were quite pleased with our sandwiches. However, what really makes this place are it's bartenders, no frills drink-slingers who loaded with charm and personality. Well...the night started out ok, didn't end the same though. I think it all went downhill once the bartender asked us where we were from, and we told him we weren't from the neighborhood. Sometime around closing time, I asked for another beer, and the bartender said something along the lines of me having last call, and walked away without giving me a beer. Shortly after, the same bartender poured shots for some people that JUST walked in and sat down at the bar. So, I asked for another beer and the bartender said, "where's your glass?". I thought that was odd seeing how the bartender just took it from the bar moments ago. I replied, telling him he took it and he walked off again without giving me a beer. A handful of steps from the entrance to West Point. A nice dive bar for when you are in the area. I was happy that they had a German Oktoberfest on tap. That was the most interesting thing available. Definitely a shot and beer type of place. Friendly bartender. Patrons were friendly. We were in town for a family event, and every person who walked in said hello and chatted with us. The place was pretty empty on a Wednesday night, and they closed up the bar pretty early. read more

The Hudson Valley is known for its magnificent light. Or luminosity, as we in the know repeatedly refer to it as. Painters sat on ridges and vistas gazing down on the mighty river. They yelled from the highest hilltops and deepest valleys "pick up a case of cruisers. We're going to be relaxing tonight, boys, so fire up the fire. " That's what the Hudson Valley is. A place to sit back, relax and remember that at one point long ago, this land was wild. It belonged to no one. Over the years, there were those who sought to tame it. Some failed, some succeeded. But here we are. Sitting, waiting, rotting, but most of all, having a lager on draft. Chicken Parm? I'll have that too. Even if we aren't all locals, we are all Americans. No matter what. We were going to arrive to Highland Falls late in the evening, around 930. So we called ahead to Tony's and asked if the food could be ready when we got there. We didn't know it at the time, but Tony's does not have seating area, but the establishment in the store front attached to them, South Gate Tavern, allows Tony's customers to eat food in their space. South Gate has a bar at the front and lots of tables for dining set up towards the back. After we finished our meal from Tony's, (excellent dining experience) we moved from the table to the bar at the tavern. Such a great atmosphere! Lots of West Point paraphernalia, but many other colleges as well. It's the type of place that has the original bar from over 100 years ago. Lots of police department patches and military unit patches collected all around the bar. The bartender was extremely friendly, told us lots of history about the place. They had several good beers on tap and their house wine was good as well. We will definitely frequent the South Gate Tavern when we are at West Point to visit our daughter in the next few years. Unless you are a local, or a West Point alum or staff member, don't expect the red carpet treatment. Been here twice - the first time, things started out OK, but once the bartender asked us if we were from the area and we said we were from out of town, we were treated pretty rudely. I'd get into the details, but, bottom line - we were made to feel like outsiders, while patrons that were from West Point were treated like gold. The second time I went there was OK, but, to be honest, there is nothing special about this bar. Bottom line - there are other bars down the street where you will be treated better - I'd skip this place and try somewhere else. read more

Without a doubt the best place to get a Guinness in the Hudson Valley. Great place for locals and guests of West Point. The bar itself is actually from 1939 Worlds Fair, and the rest of the place has history throughout the bar. read more

Our bartender was very attentive and polite, providing great service. This is a cash only bar. They have good selection including Stella which I drink. They have a good selection of appetizers you can order while drinking. They also have the restaurant area which you can order a meal if you really get hungry. Horrible. Ordered the penne pasta with broccoli,sun dried tomatoes and chicken - swimming in oil and grease. Broccoli frozen and mushy. Steak sandwich was all bread, no seasoning, and little steak. My wife and I spent several days in a hotel near the Southgate Tavern. Displeased with the fare at the hotel, we took a chance on lunch at the tavern. It was very gratifying. The salad was very good and the pizza was excellent. The waitress, both efficient and charming, made the experience even sweeter. Leaving, I had a pleasant conversation with a man tending bar whom I believe was the owner. We went back the next evening for supper and had another totally gratifying experience. The "owner" was there and visited our table several times as he did other tables. Contrary to the report of another reviewer, they knew we were not locals and could not have been more friendly. When I heard a song on the jukebox and asked the bartender who was performing, he wrote down the artist's name and the name of the song. Then, the "owner" assured me he would play the song again for me. I wish the Southgate was in Baltimore! read more
