Boone is such a charming little mountain town with a great mix of shops, restaurants, and small-town character. We stopped at South End Brewing for lunch and loved the cozy, laid-back vibe. I tried a pumpkin beer while Steve went for an espresso martini--both were fantastic choices for a fall afternoon. Since portions are usually huge when traveling and we don't like carrying leftovers, we decided to share the Tuna Poke Power Bowl ($20). It came with quinoa and spring mix as the base, topped with edamame, cucumbers, guacamole, cabbage, crispy wontons, and fresh ahi tuna. It was flavorful and beautifully presented, though I honestly couldn't find much quinoa--it felt more like a salad than a grain bowl. The ambiance is exactly what you want from a place like this--great brewery vibes that make it a cool spot to hang out. As a good local joint, the food had some real highlights. The Tuna Poke Nachos were incredible, almost comparable to the ones at Yard House, and the Flounder Sandwich was also a tasty choice. However, there were a couple of misses. The Smash Burger wasn't very flavorful and definitely needed a bit more sauce to bring it to life. I also grabbed a Caesar salad, but the croutons were a little weird and personally weren't my favorite. The service was standard and got the job done, but overall, it's a nice spot I'd visit again for the nachos alone. read more

I would not like to see this place when it's busy. They want to be good... and I think that they could be. The wings were huge and super tasty. We went for the hot honey and mango habanero (which actually had real mango). The beer was good not great. The only people really working were the manager and the hostess. The bartenders couldn't be bothered to change the channel on one tv because he'd have to walk downstairs. Even though there was not a game currently on that TV when 3 tables requested the game. But the girls he was entertaining were cute so I guess that comes first. Like I said... it could be good but, I was left wanting. read more

Great spot in downtown Boone! We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and sat outside on the covered patio. They have a great beer list and a variety of food (with allergen-friendly options). I ordered the chicken tacos on corn tortillas with mango salsa, and they were delicious. The spicy mayo had a kick, but it was perfect. The rest of our table got the pulled pork flatbread, smash burger, and wings. Everyone was happy with their food. The fries were amazing. The service was a bit slow, but would definitely go back for a laid back spot to grab food or a drink. read more

Great addition to Boone!! We wanted to go on a Saturday afternoon (not a game day for app state) and there was about a 15 minute wait. They have TV's and were showing the big games- no sound. The server was nice and attentive and the food came quick. It's a cool ambiance/atmosphere in there! My husband got a beer and I got a blackberry cider-so good!!! We got the pretzels and they were amazing!!!! SO soft, probably the best we've had in a while. The boneless wings were really good, the hot honey sauce was soooo good on them. Well Boone lucked out and got the solid Southend with the amazing vibe. We visit the one in GSO all the time, but this one is just a notch up! A group of us was walking around Boone checking out the different stores. We stopped by South End Brewing for a drink. The manager and bartender, Scott, was very friendly and constantly working. That definitely set the tone for a hard working staff. My friend and I ordered the Citrus Ranger and Blackberry Vodka Lemonade. Scott does 2 oz pours for the mixed drinks. We enjoyed the kick. If you use the same glass, there is a 25% discount on the next drink. We also spoke with the other bartender Kaylynn. She was also super friendly. First and foremost - our server was out-freakin-standing. She was so attentive and nice. As for the food, it was good but not great and it seemed pretty expensive for what it was. Beer is definitely their niche. Our family ordered wings and pretzels as appetizers. Both were quickly delivered and were overall good. Wings are ordered by weight (1/2 lb or 1 lb) but in short its six wings or twelve. A couple of different sauce options and the classic blue cheese or ranch with carrots and celery on the side. The pretzels come as order of three with cheese and mustard. The beer cheese was a little watery and simple. It didn't really taste like much more than a liquid nacho cheese. For entrees we ordered the black bean burger with fries, regular burger and a beer brat. I think the beer brat stole the show. Both the blackbean burger and regular burger were good. Fries were really good but overly salty. But I really enjoyed the brat the most. It was a simple entree but nothing that is commonly available and had the perfect accompaniments. read more

Nice staff and seemed v clean. The trout dip was horrible. Tasted like dill salmon with chunks of pink "trout" in it. I grew up working in a seafood restaurants and have never tasted trout that tastes and looks identical to salmon. The color maybe but the taste... no. It was really bad. It was a Saturday mid afternoon when visited. The place was busy but was seated pretty quickly. We had to wait 10 minutes before someone came for a drink order which arrived about 5 minutes later. We placed our food order and waited at least 1/2 hour to receive kitchen order. Our waitress did not check in with us. Another server noticed we were done and brought our check. The host was excellent and gave a great greeting and brought water to the table. The wait staff in the other hand never served me. Everything was great. Really a neat place in downtown Boone. We sat outside on the upstairs deck, but there is inside, downstairs patio and a little garden section for seating too. The crowd was nice and pleasant. Our server, Zoe, was great. She was helpful but not pushy at all. We went there twice. The first evening we had dinner of great pub food and beer. My wife got the smash burger. It was truly a hand made patty with fresh vegetables and great condiments. I got the brisket sandwich. It was other-worldly good! We had several beers and they were all good. We stopped back the next day after we had pizza elsewhere. We got the lava cake with a scoop of ice cream for dessert. It came out with 4 scoops of ice cream. What a bonus! The beer was great again. I highly recommend South End! read more

I don't know how the reviews for South End are not better. This place is an amazing. From friendly staff to tasty beer to flavorful food, I would highly recommend South End to anyone passing through the area. The location is prime and the environment is very nice for a brewpub and quite different than the other establishments in the area. It is clean inside and bright. They have a decent tv set up, this might be the once place I think they could improve on a bit. Very few brew pubs let you purchase half pours 8 oz and I am grateful! All in all my group and I had a blast at South End. It was by far our best establishment we visited in the Boone and Banner Elk area and well worth the two visits during our time in the area. read more

The Smashburgers had little seasoning, guacamole was more than half-full of huge chunks of unripe avocado, and I ordered a beer brat without a bun. The latter said it came with kraut, onions, and peppers. I LOVE grilled onions and peppers...you can see the pic of how it looked when it arrived. We visited this spot in Boone on one of the busiest weekends of the year, and were blown away by the service. Ever since COVID service has struggled everywhere (for understandable reasons), and as someone who was a server in a past life this has ruined many dining experiences. But here... WOW. We called ahead because we had a group of 7, and were told there was no wait. When we showed up 10 minutes later they had the table saved and were ready to seat us immediately. Our server, Alex, greeted us within two minutes and I swear we had drinks (flights of beer) almost immediately afterwards. Never once did we ever have to look around for him- he was always there checking in, refilling water, making excellent recommendations, and just genuinely creating a great experience. We all loved the food and great selection of beer, but honestly it was the service and people that put it over the top. HIGHLY recommend this spot! read more

First time customer. Seated promptly in an empty dining room. Service was passable. The only positive note from the meal was the Bavarian pretzel. It took around 30 minutes to receive our entrees, which would be understandable if we weren't one of 3 other small party tables, with two salads and a sandwich as our order. The caesar dressing was too tangy for me and my mom's liking, perhaps I should have gotten it on the side as it seems it was sitting in the window for too long before making it to our table. The brisket sandwich was incredibly tough, with a large portion of wet fried onions and topped with a sauce soaked bun. My partner only took a few bites of it despite being very hungry , commenting on its "wet but confusingly dry" texture. I had high hopes for this new spot, was hoping to have a new place in Boone to get a quick bite to eat, but found it lackluster and over priced. Would only come back to enjoy drinks. read more
