However, I must add that I am being very generous, since I do not take away stars for one incident of poor service. The service was horrendous, from the beginning to the end of the meal, it was an awful experience. To begin, there was no greeting, and this is a frequent problem. Customers are left to stand in the lobby with no direction or acknowledgement of their presence. The staff sometimes look your way to ignore you until you confront them and ask for a table, which they may not give you until you ask the right person. The server did not write down our order and forgot some of it. They never came around to check on us. The food came out in a scattered fashion. Eventually when we were finished eating, no server came to ask us if we wanted the check or any boxes to go. After getting their attention, I received the bill, but they didnt take my payment. They never came around again, I told my family to leave without me and maybe they will notice we are finished and I am holding the bill and my cars in the air. No service again for what seemed like an eternity sitting at an empty table with food I at one time wanted to take home, but now I was just desperate to get out. Eventually I catch the eye of some other staff, not my server, who never came back, and they flagged someone else from the kitchen to take care of my payment. Not surprisingly, even with all the food left on the table, they did not offer if we wanted any of it to go. The saddest part of this experience is that I used to like this place. We also ordered the Yuk Kalguksu (육칼국수) and Gun Mandu (군만두), and everything hit the spot. The Yuk Kalguksu came with such a generous portion that I happily finished the noodles, enjoyed some of the rich, spicy broth, and still had enough soup and beef to box up for another meal. Talk about a bonus dinner! The mandu was perfectly crispy and paired so well with the refreshing, chewy jjolmyeon. For us, a restaurant earns a spot in our regular rotation only if it checks three boxes: delicious food, friendly service, and cleanliness. Hodori easily checks all three. In fact, I came back after work the very same day to pick up dinner for the family (because one visit clearly wasn't enough ). We ordered Galbi Ugeoji Haejangguk (갈비 우거지 해장국), Galbitang (갈비탕), Tteokbokki (떡볶이), Samgyetang (삼계탕), and Yukgaejang (육개장). I politely asked the younger employee if we could order regular meals to eat at the restaurant and kids' meals to go. She said no, which was completely fine. I was simply asking a question. Then another employee came over and loudly said, "NO TAKE OUT!" directly to my face. I was shocked by her tone and how unnecessarily rude the interaction became. I immediately decided to leave and handed back the menus. As we were leaving, I noticed the same employee pointing at my children and gesturing for them to move away from the table because they had been moving the utensils around while waiting. My children are only 4 and 8 years old. They weren't damaging anything, and I would have gladly cleaned up after them. I found the way she treated them completely unacceptable. This was not my first negative experience here. During a previous visit, I witnessed the same employee and another staff member giving my friends dirty looks and an unpleasant attitude over their tip, even though they had already left 18%. With a single meal and rice costing around $35, I would expect customers to be treated with basic courtesy and respect. I don't mind paying for good food, but I refuse to spend my money at a restaurant where my family is made to feel so unwelcome. There are plenty of other Korean restaurants in Los Angeles where I would rather spend my money. Never again.
