It was late in the day, just after 2pm before closing at 3pm. They were sold out of couple side items. It was a bit windy that day, so it was very chilly. We started with a cup of creamy tomato soup. That hit the warm cozy spot! We decided on the bbq brisket sandwich with the potato salad. OMG, it was the perfect pairing! The sweetness of the sauce from the brisket and the tangy potato salad. Took a day trip to Julian and stopped to try this place out based on the yelp reviews. This place is a hidden gem. Small little cafe with a lot of personality. Plants hanging from the ceiling and painting on the walls. We decided to have an early lunch and arrived around 1030am on a Sat. and holiday weekend. (MLK). Great choice since we missed the crowds. I ordered hot green tea which was served in a cute teapot. Which they also sell. I decided on the soup and 1/2 sandwich special. The BLT and the vegetable soup was so flavorful. Wished I had ordered a full order. My husband ordered the Curry Tuna sandwich with a side of potato salad. I'm not a fan of curry but if you are this sandwich is amazing. Small but mighty cafe located in Julian. We went there for breakfast and there were a bunch of locals there early. The service was quick and friendly. I wanted to enjoy our Monday motorcycle ride thru the mountains and knew it was time to get to Julian. For years, I've passed on Main Street to head into Borrego or Santa Ysabel. But, it was over due. And it wasn't for the typical apple pie selections. I wanted something other than. Something that wouldn't be quite heavy on the gut for my first meal of the day and then a hour and a half ride back home. Soups & Such Cafe was EXACTLY what nailed it. You can't miss the soft pastel green building on Main Street. Nestled on the corner of C Street, there's limited parking stalls in the rear. And towards the corner is an access ramp and at the opposite end- stairs. From the brief business photos we've seen, I had no idea outdoor tables are available. Which was perfect for our brunch visit. The two tables are specifically reserved for S&S patrons. But, walk inside to speak with staff at the register and make sure you see what's available on the Special's board. Besides not wanting apple pie- I wanted light fare and a menu that offers something different than what you'd get from majority of menus along Main Street. Once I saw the half sandwich( Classic Deli on sourdough), soup (Thai Style Chicken), and (Caesar) salad - $18. Since a website isn't available on Google- make sure to check out current menu photos for updated costs. I upgraded to Caesar salad, and there was no skimping on Parmesan shavings! The buttered croutons were light and golden. I love how a Caesar salad is coated just right with dressing. The cup of Thai Chicken- spicy, w/ coconut milk, chicken, lemongrass, cilantro, ginger, leeks, bell peppers, green peas, and hot chili peppers. Every spoonful packed flavor. There wasn't a measly crumb left on my plate. And I had some ample room left in my belly. I told our server I'd like to try the homemade flan. (Bea's Homemade Flan). And her face lit up. She was so thrilled to include she is Bea! I loved seeing her genuine smile as she mentioned she made the flan. Perfect serving that was meant all for myself. The caramel sauce was light and thin. Which was perfect. Each chilled spoonful was decadent. Thick and creamy. With lil sips of the French pressed coffee in between bites of the custard, I knew I was going home happy. It's been awhile since I've updated my review. We were in town this weekend and staying in an Air B&B just a short walk away and decided to try them for breakfast. It was at 8:30am on a cold & blustery Saturday so it wasn't too crowded yet. Lola greeted us and went through the menu with us. Though I don't normally order eggs benedict, she convinced me they are exceptional. I ordered them with ham and had some avocado added. It was a great recommendation and I would order them again. Don ordered the pancake breakfast with bacon and scrambled eggs. The buttermilk pancakes were pretty good, loved the bacon and the eggs were perfectly cooked. The coffee was also very nice as they serve a medium roasted Columbia that they French press. We love how the place is decorated with lots of art that is for sale with some lovely plants and flowers also available for sale. I've been here only once before a really long time ago and remember liking it so, I got my mom and sister this time in with me. This cafe is as cute as they come. Our server ended up having a good chat with us as she has Hawaiian heritage and we are Pacific Islanders (Samoa, Guam) so it was a serendipitous moment for us to have stopped in! The curry sandwiches were pretty hearty and generously filled, while the BLT was perfectly light (and what I was looking for on a hot summer day) and the potato salad was refreshing, light and not overly seasoned or sauced. Mom & sister enjoyed their soups and sandwiches as well, and the serving sizes were perfect for us too as we don't eat enough to finish typically served oversized plates did not want leftovers in the car since we had another hour to drive. The owner at Mesa Blooms Orchard referred us to Soups & Such for lunch after our U-Pick Apple experience. It's a bright space with homey décor and lots of live plants. The inside tables are snug, so I recommend sitting at the picnic tables outside on the patio if you want to spread out. As the name implies, the lunch menu include soups, sandwiches, salads and burgers. I opted for the soup and salad combo, and upgraded to a Greek salad for an extra $2. The Thai Chicken style soup had a nice kick, and the coconut and lemon grass helped balance out the bell pepper taste. Though they were out of sourdough, the grilled cheese on white bread still paired nicely with the creamy tomato soup of the day. I am obsessed with this little shop. Both my soup and sandwich were some of the best things I ate last year. They have a splattering of soup and sandwich options, but therein the mix are things you don't typically find at your local cafe. First, the Thai style chicken soup was fire. It's a spicy soup with coconut milk, chicken, lemongrass, cilantro, fresh ginger, leeks, bell peppers, green peas, and hot chili peppers - so basically everything in your typical Thai soup. It was sweet, fiery, and certainly unexpected. And then there is the curry tuna sandwich which is much like a regular tuna - celery, raisins, olives included - but with curry. It's textually very delightful and has a ton of spunk in flavor. While I do know that lemongrass and curry are pretty aromatic and not for everyone, you'd be pleased to know that their other soups and sandwiches are equally delicious. Both the French onion soup and BLT were giving what they needed to give. Half soup & sandwich combos will run you around $12.95. So glad we stopped here for lunch! When we first arrived in Julian for a long weekend getaway my boyfriend immediately noticed the "Soups and Such Cafe" and was immediately intrigued. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by a super nice lady who gave us a menu and said, "let me know if you want to stay." After answering our many questions (I'm currently on a weird diet) we decided to stay and I'm so glad we did! I ordered the half sandwich (veggie), cup of soup (farm green), and the side salad with avocado with the shallot vinaigrette dressing. Everything was SUPER fresh and homemade and had an amazing flavor. I could eat the soup for days, it was so good and was packed with veggies. Everything had an amazing flavor and o was totally satisfied upon scarfing down my whole meal. The only thing is I wish the veggie sandwich had more veggies on it like red onion and cucumber. That would be really good! We also ordered a pot of the Russian Caravan black tea and I also got the passion iced tea. Their teas are amazing! You can tell it's fresh and their machines are clean because the tea is clear and crisp. The Russian caravan tea was loose leaf served in a cute pot. I would order it again. French onion soup: pass! It đidn't have that umami essence that is released when onions are rendered & slowly cooked over low heat. There was a small slice of soggy bread but I don't think it was toasted prior to topping the soup with cheese. Yes, the crouton should soak up the soup but in my opinion, the texture will be different when the crouton is perfectly toasted. House salad: no complaints here!
