We arrived in time for the lunch menu but had to wait until after the lunch menu had expired. The girl who seated us arranged for an exception to be made in our case and we could order off the lunch menu. Thank you. The food was good but not exceptional. Our waiter was very attentive and didn't rush us out like other places which we appreciate. Very big portions here so be mindful when ordering. We were a little nervous about the reviews but came with no expectations a little before 10 am on a Saturday and really enjoyed our experience. Our wait was 20-30 mins. Customer service was good, our server and the bussers were friendly and attentive. The bacon was thick and cooked perfectly, the scrambled eggs were fluffy, and the French toast had the perfect flavor and texture. The boysenberry/apple pie crumble was amazing and the best way to end my meal. The cinnamon roll was huge and wasn't too bad, wouldn't order it again but got it for the experience. The butter on top was unnecessary and the frosting was excessive. We sat at a table near the front and could hear the wait times and the later you came, the longer your wait. The average wait became 1 hr 20 mins, then 1.5 hours. This restaurant is good but not amazing to wait that long... The one thing I noticed was that the path to the restroom is the same path where the food sits when it's finished and is waiting to be dropped off to tables. Stopped by with my fiancé for bunch and we got the cinnamon roll French toast and country fried steak. It was great! The french toast was as sweet as we expected but even bigger than anticipated, lol. The country fried steak was perfectly crispy, gravy was flavorful, and the fresh cider hit the spot. Place was packed too but the food came out pretty quick maybe a 20-30 min wait. Always a fan of great service too so I'll add our server was super nice and welcoming. It's a small spot inside but the oversized food portions make this place bigger. If I'm in Julian and want more than just pie, this is definitely one of my go to spots. read more

We loved our time at Julian Cafe. It is such a cute spot. We visit Julian a lot but it's usually impossible to get a seat here without a long wait on the weekends. We ended up coming here on Sunday afternoon and the place was very quiet. We enjoyed the food a lot - everything was delicious and exactly what we expected. It has a warm home-cooked & cozy vibe. Our server was wonderful. The only negative is some of the employees aren't very nice, but that was minor compared to the rest of the experience. Don't eat too much so you have room for pie! Decided to take a drive out to Julian on a Friday afternoon and had lunch at this little old-town restaurant. Our server Matt was really friendly and efficient. My family was pretty impressed by the food! We couldn't resist ordering the Hot Cinnamon Bun and oh boy! It was the best cinnamon roll we ever had!!! After picking up a few pies at Julian Pie Co in Santa Ysabel, found our way back here in neighboring city of Julian. The Farmhouse was sadly closed on a Tuesday, otherwise that's where we would have dined instead. I'm so glad this was right in front of Mom's Pie across the street. Rebecca was our wonderful server who checked on us many times to ensure our experience was nothing but impeccable. At first glance, the fried chicken caught my eye & Hubby ordered a bowl of chili with the onions, sour cream & cheese on the side, with corn bread, of course. I counted about 13 table in this cafe that could seat two to four each, some free standing, some booths- which could easily accommodate 6 small adults. Our food arrived shortly & it was hot & fresh. After the customary photo ops, we dug in. It took all of my courage to NOT ravage it coz I was hangry! It's 4 pm & it would've been our first meal of the day. My fried chicken was scrumptious--oh so crunchy & full of seasoned flavor, the meat inside was tender & moist. The mashed potatoes with gravy were the perfect partner to offset the richness of the fried chicken-- Hubby loved it, too! Hubby's chili was pretty good, good amount of spices but we've had better. It was so good, though to be thick & hearty on a cold, rainy, fall day. The cornbread was a bit dry, nothing to write home about. The best part of this meal? When Rebecca dropped by & we were about to settle the bill, she said that it had already been taken care of.... What!? She said one of the customers had already paid for it. I've been coming to Jullian for over 40 years and I've been to this place before many times and I've always really enjoyed the environment and how it was built in 1872 It was the original apple pie Café here in Julian. But I do have to say, the service was horrendous. Patti, our server was one of the worst waitresses I've ever been helped by. I told her that I thought that she was extremely rude and she said she didn't care and if I wanted to, I could just leave, as I was leaving. She does not represent this. This place has it. I had the liver and onions with extra, extra onions. There was a lot of onions on top and a lot of bacon. The liver and onions was delicious, but needed a little salt. With the extra little bit of salt, it is some of the best liver and onions I've ever had. The mashed potatoes and gravy was delish too. My husband had the chicken pie turn over. He said it was effing good!!!! The stacks of fries coming out of the kitchen were hot and high and I wish a couple had fallen on my table. But, I had to finish my lunch fryless. I was drawn in by the sign. It said built in 1872. burned in 1957, and restored in 1978. Imma like oh my it's an old building and got a lot of history in it. So my friend and I walked in and it looked cozy and inviting. We sat at a big booth, very spacious. To go to the bathroom you have to pass the kitchen area where waiters pick up their food. The toilet had a pull string to flush. Pretty neat. My friend and I decided to share our food, giving each other our food. My friend ordered chicken and waffles which was tasty and the only reason for the 3 stars. I ordered the mushroom, spinach and feta cheese omelette. Didn't like the look of it. And the taste was even worse such a strong taste of feta. It looked like the cook cooked the scrambled eggs then layered ingredients on top folded the scrambled eggs and made it an omelette. I've seen it done like that before but never this bad. I like my omelette eggs and ingredients mixed in. Feel like iHop did a better job. I didn't touch the potatoes because I'm here for the protein. I don't usually do that. I always packed my food to go but it was that bad I left majority of my food behind. Went here for Pie Day and decided to eat brunch. Was not disappointed at all. The zucchini was yummy and crisp, complemented by the requisite ranch dressing. Also got one of their specialties, the chicken pot pie. Tasty and satisfying. Finally the apple burger which was good, but the blue cheese overpowered the apples so I cant thoroughly comment on its synergy. We ended it with an apple boysenberry pie with ice cream, which rounded the meal perfectly. We got a nice sized booth and were given our extensive menu shortly after sitting. So many choices it was hard to decide but my go to is usually Fried Chicken if its on the menu and made from scratch in house. My meal also came with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans, the potatoes were okay just a little to glutinous for me but the green beans were amazing. When we decided to try this place out, I didn't have high expectations simply because of the stars, but I was pleasantly surprised that everything was really good. Our server Cara, was super busy, but took the time to explain the meaning behind the stained glass window and made sure we had our coffees topped off. The pancakes were huge but had great flavor. The butter on top of the pancake wasn't melting, but it is cold out, so maybe that's why. The omelette was really good and you can tell that the Ortega chilis are fresh roasted in house (there was still skin on them). Stopped by Julian Café during a day trip and had a nice overall experience. It was pretty quiet when we walked in, but a small rush followed right after us. Even with that, the service was great. The two ladies on shift were friendly, attentive, and handled everything smoothly. I ordered the liver and onions, which isn't something you see often served at restaurants, so I appreciated that it was on the menu. The liver was cooked well, it was tender and not doused in oil. The mashed potatoes, though, were a bit bland, and the bacon bits I added tasted kind of stale. Still, the liver made up for it cause the health benefits I suppose :3 My friend ordered a burger and really enjoyed it. It was huge and actually juicy and cooked just right. He devoured it and wouldn't stop raging about how juicy it was. We finished the brunch by splitting a slice of apple pie with cinnamon crumble topping and boysenberry sauce. He loved it. Was touristing the area for a couple days and we had to come back to Julian Cafe. The first day we went I got the chicken and waffles and my wife got biscuits and gravy with ham steak. The second day we shared a giant buckaroo burrito. The chicken and waffles were amazing, the chicken breast was juicy and the crust was crispy, the biscuits and gravy had an amazing peppery taste with a soft buttery biscuit, the ham was pan fried to perfection, and the burrito was great, we added bacon and ham to it and it was perfect. I am fair when it comes to reviews. So let's start with the positive. Our server was polite, courteous and checked on us when needed. On to the negative. My wife ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. That should be easy to make. They burned it twice before they delivered a proper specimen. It was hot in the restaurant. Would it kill them to turn on the AC? It is very loud in there so good luck having a conversation without yelling. When we checked in, we were told it was an hour wait. They texted us just before the hour mark. The chairs are made of hard wood. They were very uncomfortable to sit in. The area is very small and you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathrooms. We were hoping to have breakfast, however that stops at 1130. I would not return even if they offered a free meal for my family. Absolute trash. read more
