Belgian endive soup
Isabella B.

One of the better budget meals I've encountered in all my European travels is this soup restaurant in Ghent, Belgium. This tiny restaurant is located right next to a bridge that cross the river Lys on one side and the popular candy shop Temmerman on the right with its distinctive panels depicting the works of mercy. Being a soup restaurant they have 4 different types of soups on the menu. The 4 soups differ by day and by season though there's always a vegetarian option. While two of the flavors had similar equivalents in English that I was able to figure out easily, the other two were explained by the nice woman on the counter. The soup that my mom and I got was "witloof" soup (white leaf aka endive or chicory), which we were warned had a bitter aftertaste. Luckily the addition of toppings such as parsley, cheese and mini meatballs dampened the bitterness. And for €5 you can get a medium-sized bowl that also includes two mini loaves of bread an and apple. Indoor and outdoor seating available. While it was a little chilly even in mid-August (Belgium was nearing the end of showers), it was an excellent location for people-watching.

Tomato soup!

Great soup!! My tomato soup was delicious! The salads were great too! Great restaurant to eat at if you are looking for a quiet lunch, and not a big lunch! The atmosphere was very cozy!! I would definitely come back!!

Large to go. Only 5€

I went here on a Saturday around 1145 just before the traditional lunch rush. There were only about 6 people in line when we got there, but it did start growing as we were in line as it got closer to noon. However, the person labeling soup was efficient and friendly. There are 4 types of soup, all vegetarian. I think they rotate, but today was Broccoli, Tomato, Green Pea, or Celery. Each soup comes with 2 mini bread rolls and an apple. In European fashion, take away is 1€ less than sit in prices. Which is fine for us. We had 2 large soups to go and had a picnic down the road for 10€ flat. Those large soups are no joke! Everyone who passed us kept looking at our soups in shock. The soup itself was pretty good. They offer free optional toppings like parsley, croutons and some kind of meatball. We asked for all of them and they really made the soup something special. Great location right next to the river and the oldest candy-maker in Ghent (look left when facing Soup Lounge and you will see two old facades that people a taking photos of). So: Great location, friendly staff who speak English, good food, and cheap. What more could you ask for in a high-tourist area in Belgium?

Paprika soup

Completely fine meal for a fair price. Choose the soup of the day for €5, get two buns and an apple with it - it's quite simple and nothing to not like. It's a bit too boring for me to want to go back. And oh, getting new soup bowls would be a good idea, as most of them are have cracks in them. Make sure to bring cash as they do not accept cards here.

Fresh salad.

4€! Delicious and quick. 4 choices each day. We got three different ones and they were all fantastic. Very local feel and not the least bit touristy. Also got a salad and it was extremely fresh - cucumbers, corn, fruit. A short walk from the center as well.

Zucchini and tomato soup

Love this place I came twice. It's by the most beautiful bridge and part of the city. It's a cheap meal (5€ for a medium bowl of soup) and really wholesome. When you are tired of eating greasy fries and whole bunch of carbs this is a great healthy alternative to a nice lunch. There also wifi here which helps! I mixed tomato and zucchini soup which balanced the acidity of the tomato. Also they give you two little breads, toppings on the soup like parsley little meatballs, onions, and croutons. My favorite part is the one price of fruit like nectarine. If they give you an old one just ask to switch it with another one. Great for kids and families too!

A solid lunch!

Unless you want a beer or it's night time, why aren't you standing in line with the rest of the…read moretown? There are not so many great options for vegetarians and the gluten-free tribe, but I'm looking at menus and trying things out one by one. Soupaway is magnificent. You stand in line with an orderly swarm of students in a long, narrow space. Don't walk away. The line moves fast. These are professionals. There are crates of fresh vegetables on the floor by the kitchen. You can see the soupy goodness simmering in the kitchen. I couldn't smell anything today, but if I didn't have a cold, I imagine it's pretty good. There were maybe 10 soups to choose from. They ranged from simple vegetable ones to Super complex curry ones. Each soup is in a column of price points. You can eat there or takeaway. There are options without gluten ingredients. Just ask. If you don't speak Flemisch or Nederlands. No worries. English seemed to work. I chose a simple mushroom soup. It was the single best soup I have ever had in my life. I have had and made some amazing soups, but this one beat out all the rest. I am troubled about going anywhere else for lunch. Why are you still reading this?? Go-go-go!!

I finally timed it one of the days to make it for lunch. A few notes: -There's always a line because it's very popular. -They have the soups listed in front of the store and at the counter. -You can choose sizes of small, large, XL. -You can eat in or do take away. -Your order comes with a small baguette. -When you're done eating, you need to bring your tray up to the kitchen. Food: There were so many delicious choices to choose from that I decided to get two small bowls - tomato and courgette. The people around me thought I was crazy eating two soups but I didn't care because they were both absolutely delicious! Price: 8€ for the two small bowls of soup. Service: It's the one guy at the counter and he's very friendly. Ambiance: Super casual Would I go back? Most definitely!
