I went to Sotta La Luna because I've been to its sister restaurant, Sotto Le Stelle, which had a pretty similar menu. Sotto definitely has a different vibe. When I walked in and saw the open kitchen around it there was a sign that said it was voted the best Italian restaurant for 2024 and 2025. Although it didnt say where exactly. Was it for Queens or New York in general? I wasn't sure how official it was. I suggest making reservations if you would like dinner around 6-8pm. Our table was right by the open kitchen, and it was actually really cool watching the chefs work while we ate. Foodwise, we started with the arancini balls which were delicious. For the main, I ordered the fettuccine al ragu filetto and I'm glad that I did because it was a bit different from the usual pasta dishes I've had before. However the pizza cacio e salasiccia was a bit salty for my taste. For dessert we ordered the panna cotta of the day which was a berry one. That was really good. Definitely recommend ordering that one as it was light, creamy and the berries made it flavorful. read more

Great food and wine, I love their pizza, but can be pricey for the portion size for some items. The gluten-free items I've tried here are REALLY delicious, were also liked by friends who are not gluten-free. Part of reason for giving less than 5 stars because at my most recent visit the staff asked if we want bread, and since one in our party is gluten-free we can have gluten-free foccaccia. We were not informed that there is an extra charge until we saw the $14.50 charge for foccaccia on the bill. I do not remember if they offer complimentary bread service or if that would be for an additional charge as well. As for the regular review: It's a large space, nice ambiance and not too loud. Other than not informing us of the charge for gluten-free foccaccia, the staff was helpful and friendly the rest of the night. Tonight we (party of 2) came here for NYC Restaurant Week prix fixe dinner. Very good deal for the amount and quality of food. One of us is vegetarian the other is gluten-sensitive so we wish the restaurant week menu items were labeled accordingly. (The regular menu does label GF items.) There are plenty of vegetarian options on the menus but we had to ask to be sure since these are not labeled. We had high hopes as we heard so many good things about this place, and were finally able to try them when we had to be in that area in Queens one night. The place was nicely decorated, but tables are a bit too close together. Service was spotty but I think it's because they're understaffed. The servers were trying their best but we had to flag them down many times for different things. The food was mostly fairly good, although I'd say the pasta dishes were a bit bland and could be more flavorful (not necessarily salty). It's very homey, like something I could whip up at home, as I try to be health conscious when I cook. But that's not what I expect when I go out to eat, I expect bolder flavors. read more

One of my fav Italian spots in all of Queens. Cutting straight to the chase here. The must get here is the Caico e Pepe. It comes table-side in a cheese wheel and it is everything! I heated up the leftovers this morning for breakfast and it was just as good as last night. Thursday night and the place was well attended. The host/server allowed me to be seated before my friend arrived and gave me my choice of where to sit. I found a spot by the window and it was the perfect spot to catch up with my friend when she arrived. The service was just perfect! The place itself is so cute. Dim lit and perfect for a date night. We dined at Sotto La Luna in Astoria with a party of five. We ordered a bottle of Franciacorta ($75) and planned to order another wine to complement our meal. Unfortunately, when our server opened the Franciacorta, she spilled at least half a glass on the table and chair. There was no apology--just a shocked "oh my god." A man, who appeared to be a manager, immediately took the bottle and said, "We'll open a new bottle." We didn't want to make a scene, as we were celebrating a friend's first half marathon, but we later watched him wiping the same bottle behind the counter and he served it as if it were a new one. Living in the neighborhood for over three years, this restaurant appeared crowded every time I walked by it. I finally decided to give it a try on a Monday, and I was not disappointed. Solid Italian spot. If I lived closer this might have ended up being my go-to, but I have to say that Vite is still a cut above this place. With that out of the way, Sotto La Luna does have good food. The ambiance here really feels like you're stepping into the kitchen of an Italian restaurant (in a good way). The kitchen is out in the open, so you can see your food being prepared if you're sitting close enough. We had just come from Sala's happy hour next door so we were good on drinks. We kicked things off with the arancini which were good but really needed a kick or some type of acidity - I wasn't a fan of the white sauce they served it with. The margarita pizza's crust was good, but the cheese and sauce were a bit watery in the middle. We tried their vegan pasta which was also good, but tasted like something you could easily make at home. I'd come back and try other things here to give it another shot though. read more

If we would have known that we would have went someplace else and dined here on a different day. We started out with the arancini which was AMAZING! The rice inside was so creamy! We ordered the aranchini rice balls for a starter, then the tonnarelli cacio e Pepe and the soleluna as entrees. The rice balls were absolutely amazing, highly recommend! Perfect temperature too, as I've had rice balls that burnt the roof of my mouth. Excellent texture and flavor in each bite with the mayonnaise sauce. The tonnarelli pasta dish comes with a cheese wheel on a cart with a man that spins the pasta around and serves you the pasta fresh drenched in the cheese. Very intriguing experience but the pasta itself was too rich and heavy for my taste. Very thick and would not be good alone without other dishes to break up the taste. The soleluna is a half calzone and pizza combination, highly recommend ordering this! Excellent flavor with a balance of the red pizza and the white cheese of the calzone. The owners of this place are doing a great job of offering relatively authentic Italian cuisine, in an environment that manages to be both fun and intimate. Hard working wait staff is primarily Italian which can be rare, we found they added to the authenticity of the experience. The fritto misto was exactly as light and non-oily as we were hoping for, pizza was delicious, the freshness and quality of the ingredients was evident. We didn't have a pasta dish but the plates passing by looked delicious and the looks on the faces of the diners was enough for us to keep it in mind for a future visit. What to say? This place is amazing. I have been here several times but am only finally getting around to leaving a review. We had reservations on Mother's Day. (Pro-tip - Always reserve on any holiday and weekend as they get packed). We were shown to our table a few minutes after our reserved time. They definitely keep tables moving without ever feeling rushed and I appreciate that. I love the look and style of the restaurant, well. The floor plan and open kitchen make for a nice and airy dining experience. I already knew what I'd be ordering as I fell in LOVE with it the last time I dined in. My husband and daughter had never been so they played it safe with a Pizza/Pizza Sandwich. We started with the arancini and burrata for apps. The burrata was so creamy and paired nicely with delicious basil oil and tomatoes. Mouth watering! The arancini, which I had previously was also very good. It comes with mushroom, which I do NOT like but these were THAT good. Didn't taste the mushroom at all, thankfully! I had the Pappardelle Al Ragout D'Agnello. The Pappardelle was cooked to perfection allowing for the greatest bite. I don't eat lamb often (maybe 2-3 times a year?) and this ragout is such a delicious, hearty feel good stew like sauce. Highly recommend. A well rounded bite every single time! Sotto La Luna does Pizza perfectly so you really can't go wrong with simple Margherita style. My daughter ate this one and opted against having cheese. Basil, Sauce, Olive oil and a tasty crust was all she needed. Large portion she wasn't able to even get down half (which made for yummy leftovers). My husband had the Salsiccia Pizza Sandwich (Broccoli rabe, Italian sausages, smoked mozzarella). I didn't try it because I don't eat pork but he loved it and again the portion was so large he only ate half and it reheated very well the next day. We drank wonderful Red Sangria throughout our dining experience and saved just enough room for dessert! While we were quite stuffed from our meals, my daughter had a cannoli, which she loved. I really came here for the pizza I saw on their IG (the crust filled with ricotta and soppressata, topped with mozzarella, Gorgonzola, zucchini & pine nuts), BUT that pizza was only on the specials menu and not a regularly served menu item. I got the next best thing from the menu since I'm obsessed with ricotta, and got the soleluna pizza, which is half calzone and half regular, which was sooooo good. This particular week, we went from our favorite SoleLuna restaurant, then Sotto Le Stelle and then here. The same team manages all 3, so we know the food is good. We thought about visiting it sooner but it's hard to get a parking space around here, so we landed on Sunday, the no-parking rule day! The place is huge, vertically and horizontally. The high ceiling is noticeable. It lets me breathe better. It's important to find a place where you can breathe in NYC. There is outside seating too. The Chef is the first Soleluna Chef. We had fritto misto, tarfuto pizza, and oysters and tried Chef's favorite rice balls. I gotta say, I'm not a beer drinker but give me a nice tasting COLD beer and I'm in. We started off with the sotto La Luna pizza. Nice concept/idea but not to my liking. It's a half moon and half sun. The moon side (calzone) had ricotta and ham inside. The sun side had sausage, mushroom in a red sauce. The crust was a little flimsy. The calzone was a little burnt but my first bite was a glob of ricotta. Then we ordered the the thick ribbon pasta with the lamb ragu. WOW. The sauce... you can taste the seasoning but it's not overwhelming. You can taste the wine but just enough and the pieces of shredded lamb was perfection. We sat at the bar so we watched as the chefs prepared the dishes. I was in awe. The servers were very attentive. Definitely felt like a family. The restaurant has that home environment. Relaxed feel. Living in Sunnyside, we frequent Sole Luna and Sotto La Stelle with our daughter but for our anniversary we decided to venture to Astoria for Sotto La Luna and it did not disappoint. The staff was welcoming and the food (even our 4 year old's butter pasta) was delicious. We started with arancini, fritto misto, and the steak tartare. The chips for the tartare seemed like really thin crispy pizza dough. It was light and delicious. For dinner we had the lime gnocchi w/shrimp and the filet mignon ragout. We have a the ragout a few time as Sole Luna but the gnocchi was a totally unexpected flavor palette that we loved. So airy, so fresh. To celebrate for dessert, we got the chocolate cake and a special that was an ice cream sandwich between pizza dough with nutella. Safe to say, we did not leave a crumb behind. This was my second time here and I still loved it! The first time was at least a year ago and we ordered the burrata to start (amazing) and Cacio e Pepe pasta. The pasta was so good and cheesy and of course the presentation was great (served right out of a parmesan cheese wheel). This time we ordered the burrata again, and the pizza special ($30) which allowed us to try four different types of pizza. I went with: margherita, 4 formaggi, primavera, and sotto la luna. My favourite was the classic margherita. Next time I will definitely just order the margherita, though I loved the option to try 4 different slices. It's great for an indecisive person like me, especially when theres several things on the menu that look really good! The ambiance is nice, with an open kitchen, and not too noisy. The waiters were friendly and attentive. Tonight they gave free shots of limoncello to all the women in the restaurant for International Women's Day! I thought that was super sweet and thoughtful!
