Greg Marks, one of the owners, walked us through what was and wasn't possible with the City of Alexandria's zoning requirements, and explained every step clearly -- a real relief for our first big construction project. His brother Drew Marks, our project manager, visited the site daily, kept everything on schedule, and always kept us in the loop. He responded quickly to every question, and his patience was remarkable. The crew was respectful and left the worksite tidy every day. Now that it's finished, we couldn't be happier. The ADU is beautiful and incredibly functional, and details like the custom cabinetry and thoughtful layout show the care they put into their work. If you're looking for a team that truly cares about their clients and delivers quality, Greg and his crew are the way to go.

In our experience, Marks-Woods Construction LLC are dangerous and dishonest contractors…read more I won't bury the lede: Marks-Woods lit our house on fire and abandoned it to burn, cut a live 240 volt wire and left it exposed in our yard where children play, mis-wired an outlet so that it threw sparks and molten copper onto our attic insulation, and allowed a gas leak to persist in our occupied house for at least a month. They exceeded their three-month contracted timeline by five months and left the project incomplete. If those facts are not enough to convince you of their unsuitability to earn your business, please continue reading. The red flags came early and often: Marks-Woods demanded a HUGE down payment to begin work, which began later than promised and faced delays from the outset. As other reviewers have noted, workers would show up infrequently (initially less than 60% of the time) and do very little work (for example, we caught them napping in our garage, watching videos, and playing with paper airplanes). Marks-Woods' work failed and continues to fail Fairfax County inspections (our deck for example, was built at great expense and not even remotely to code) and of hit-or-miss quality (we could not confirm some of their subcontractors' licenses either). They wasted time and resources via sloppy workmanship (e.g., leaky roof, broken tiles, unlevel floors), failing to follow building plans correctly, and misordering supplies etc. etc. Marks-Woods' communication was erratic and inaccurate regarding scheduling, work to be done, work completed, and invoicing. You can verify in other reviews (note the lack of historical ones on Google: Marks-Woods' business profile suspiciously disappeared for a while) and public court records that they allegedly pull financial shenanigans such as failing to pay their creditors and subcontractors. For our project, they unilaterally (and likely illegally) demanded changes in our payment terms in violation of the contract and created false invoices requesting payment multiple times for the same line items while sprinkling payments among various unrelated line items to help their "cash flow". I could continue our litany of documented complaints ad nauseum and appreciate your reading this far. My only goal is to spare other homeowners from the financial and emotional trauma our family suffered at the hands of Marks-Woods; avoid them: they do not deserve your or anyone else's business.

Granitech came to my home within a couple of days of my inquiry to assess and measure the shower. The Granitech team was very responsive to my questions and made recommendations to ensure the design of the new shower aligned with my wants and needs. They also recommended replacing the 19-year old vanities/cabinets with new 34" heigh cabinets and provided a separate price quote with two design options. The shower renovation and cabinet replacement was reasonably priced. The Granitech team showed up as scheduled and was meticulous in laying floor covers from the front door to the upstairs master bathroom to protect the areas. Granitech demolished the existing shower down to the studs, installed new insulation, relocated the drain, installed new plumbing, shower head, wet-rated shower light fixture, onyx shower wall panels, hardware (towel racks, grab bars, toilet paper holders), new luxury cabinets/vanities. Granitech also coordinated the design and installation of a customer pivot shower door with Dulles Glass. The Granitech team installed everything to perfection, patched drywall in garage ceiling once the WSSC and county inspector confirmed work was compliant with building code. Constant communication and stellar project management coupled with highly skilled home improvement staff resulted in an excellent quality bathroom renovation. I am thoroughly pleased with my new bathroom. I look forward to using Granitech for future home improvement projects. We're very pleased with the work that Ricky, Dicky, and Wilson did. They're clearly professional, experienced and tidy, which we really appreciated. We would give 5 stars for that part of the job. However, communicating with Harry Braswell Concierge was dicey at best both before the job started and after it was completed. We repeatedly had to ask for details about what to expect and the start and end dates, and final payment information. We only stuck with the effort because the team was highly recommended by a respected source. We strongly recommend the workers with this team for wall repairs and painting; hopefully, with better communications from the office.

We replaced our old rotting deck with a beautiful new room addition, designed by WISA, with a…read moresliding door and a side exit that even included a small full bathroom and closet (features that other companies told us would not be possible within the same amount of existing space that we had to work with). WISA's team was wonderful. Everyone did an expert job -- from digging the foundation (lots and lots of dirt needed to be removed!) to extraordinary architectural planning of the project to painstaking attention to every small detail that accentuated the beauty of this space. We especially like that we saw the same team members on a consistent basis (no outsourcing of labor). Everyone arrived on time for the workday and put in their full effort all day long, six days a week -- the excavators, foundation builders, plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, roofing and siding specialists, and, indeed, the entire highly skilled workforce. They found solutions to any and every issue that sometimes cropped up, as to be expected in a large, involved project of this magnitude. The design and project planning team, along with the architect and company heads, were so very helpful in bringing our vision to life. We even went ahead and had old popcorn ceiling removed from our existing living room, dining room, and kitchen and had all those walls and ceilings painted to match our new room addition and had recessed lighting installed in those areas, too (our older home did not have any existing ceiling lighting in our living room) -- so a lot of expert wiring was required to accomplish all this. Additionally, we had WISA install electrical power and lighting to our shed while they were working on all of the other wiring installation work. Our new extension with plenty of large windows to enjoy our treed back yard just adds so much more to the enjoyment of this beautiful extra space. Our back yard was so sloped previously that we couldn't fully use a lot of this additional area effectively before. The new flooring was hand-picked and hand-stained to very closely match our existing floor that this tied into. We now have extra room for family and guests to stay. Not only did the room design and the new large side deck exceed our expectations, instead of renovating an older bathroom as we had planned to do, we decided to go ahead with having a lovely retaining wall and matching pavers installed to fully enhance our new space. This is the first time we've ever had a level pathway across our backyard. It makes everything so much easier! This also corrected previous poor drainage problems affecting our yard, so that was an unexpected added bonus. Our addition turned out better than we could ever have imagined and at a far better price than several quotes we received from other companies. Our initial quote from WISA was easily only half the cost of the quotes from other home improvement companies we contacted. Also, the WISA showroom has just as much selection of products as other companies do; and they will go above and beyond to help you find just the right flooring, tiling, bathroom fixtures, and other options even beyond what they carry in their large onsite showroom. From initial design, to pulling permits, to their advanced experience in coordinating and carrying out plans in compliance with homeowner association (HOA) approval, to final completion of a beautifully constructed new room, deck, and backyard retention wall and paver layout, they are truly top-notch! We are beyond thrilled with our new space and would highly consider WISA for any other projects - like those bathroom renovations - that we plan to tackle in the future! In fact, we have already recommended them to others, as well. This was such a wise decision and a wonderful investment in both the beauty and value of our home! Our room addition is now like a bit of a vacation retreat!

Anyway, for those unsure, HandyMench handles complex/custom jobs end-to-end as a full service shop.
