OK, I love the beach. Really, almost any beach is great in my book, but there is something about airing down your tires, throwing your truck into 4 wheel drive and driving though the bumpy sand road to get to a awesome beach spot. No need to lug all your stuff to your spot because your truck is right behind you. Week days this place is pretty quiet, which makes it even better, but the weekends can get crazy, so make sure you get there early. Please note there are rules to this beach. First you need a off road fishing permit and everything required to go with it (fishing poles, portable toilet, a shovel, tow cable, etc), you need a 4x4 SUV or truck (rear wheel drive or front wheel drive will just get you stuck, honestly I'm not even sure about AWD) and most importantly, this is a carry in, carry out beach. That means take your trash with you. There is no one here to pick up your garbage. Keep the beach clean. Also, there is a big un-written rule, you see someone get stuck, offer to help them out. It could happen to you one day.

Bumpy ride! But worth it! Chill spot with white sands and clear water... Once you do the drive on beach it's hard to do it any other way... Come here on a weekend and it's jam packed but you're guaranteed to have the best time .. It's like a sick jeep and RAM party with tons of people, umbrellas, BBQ and BEERSSSSSSS ... YAAAAAAAAAAS

There are plenty of lounge chairs and regular chairs to watch the kiddos splash and play - or you can join in the fun as well! An hour or so of playing here and my toddler is wiped out. Be mindful of your own children here - obviously surfaces can get slippery with the water so running is not a great idea. The lifeguards are teenagers usually looking at their phones or chatting with one another. Hours for the splash park at 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and last day of the season is Sept. 2nd. There are also fun lawn games when you first enter like giant connect four and corn hole. If the sand and beach is more your thing, Venetian has you covered. There is a small section roped off in the water designated for swimming. The food section is fast-food esque - think burgers, dogs, that sort of thing. Last time we got a soft pretzel which, at $6.50 was a bit outrageous. And it was underwhelming. We sat at one of the picnic tables - no food allowed in the splash park area. They do have concerts here at night which is fun, and a great (free) family summertime activity. In the off-season, the playground here is awesome. Great for the 3-8/9 year old range. It is also completely closed in via gate, which always makes me feel more comfortable.

Being one of the smaller state parks in New York what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in recreation. Known for its charter fishing fleet stationed on the North side of the park which embarks daily on fishing adventures (equipment provided) on the great South Bay or North Atlantic. There are two major fishing peers in the park one on the north and my favorite that over looks the Robert Moses causeway on the south, unlike the charter boats you are on you own with equipment for fishing off the peers but the good news is that there is a bait and tackle shop located near the North peer should you need some hooks or bait. Captree offers a bar and restaurant of sorts and concession stand if you're hungry after a long day of charter boat fishing or just stop in for the occasional live music. Don't forget to take a walk or bike ride on the ocean parkway green way, the trail head begins here and ends 13.7 miles away on jones beach. Come to captree to get out in the ocean air and maybe even have a picnic if you desire, the views from the south end on the overlook beach are fantastic.

I stopped in recently looking for a medium light rod and reel combo for some fishing at Belmont Lake State Park and Southard's Pond. The owner greeted me like a regular, even though it was my first visit. Before pointing me toward anything, he asked the right questions -- where I'd be fishing, what I'd be targeting, whether I prefer live bait. That kind of intake matters. It's the difference between a salesman and someone who actually wants to set you up for a good day on the water. He walked me over to a display and pulled a rod, reel, and line combo -- all for $50. "This is all you need," he said. And he meant it. He could have easily steered me toward something pricier, but he didn't. That kind of honesty is rare and it earns loyalty. A few bobbers and a bag of hooks later, I walked out fully rigged and ready to go. The shop is easy to find -- right on Montauk Highway, about half a mile from the Robert Moses Causeway. It's not a massive space, but the selection is surprisingly deep, covering rods, reels, hooks, line, lures, and both fresh and frozen bait. The 4.8 stars on Google Maps aren't an accident. Highly recommended.

In plain view was a Park Police vehicle, so I felt safe. I also saw several people riding in a paddle boat. How fun! There are multiple clearly marked trails, which are great places to ride your bike or walk. There were several people feeding the ducks and geese in the lake, ignoring the signs that warn them not to do that. The two children's playgrounds are quite spacious, and leashed dogs are allowed. There are lots of picnic benches and huge tables. The restrooms have a lot of stinky toilets. Staff needs to clean them more often. Finally, BEWARE OF DEER TICKS! A few people said that they saw some, so bring some tick repellent.
