Easy boardwalks lead you directly to the beach and the lifeguards will watch you and yours while swimming on the waves. I want to give a special shoutout to those serving as lifeguards- during our last visit, the rip current was quite strong. Strong enough to overwhelm at least a few swimmers who were struggling to get back to shore. Within seconds, the guards sprang into action and with incredible action, saved those swimmers and got them back to shore safe and sound. Make sure to visit the food vendors and also the various booths set up for state parks or local flavor. A small parking fee gets you a day well spent

They are also decorated so cute and beachy. The back picnic tables made the perfect setup for deep conversations, games, and even s'mores by the grill. A few of us took a walk down to the water and got in plenty of steps--it was totally worth it for the views! I'd love to come back and check out The Salt Shack next time. On a quick walkthrough, I noticed how beautifully it was decorated, and the staff I met were so friendly. Even from the picnic area, we could hear and enjoy the live music, which was such a fun bonus. I was also surprised to see their full volleyball tournament setup--it turns out a friend of mine was even competing that same day! Cedar Beach really has something for everyone, and I can't wait to return.

There is a long path that leads through the Salt Shack (always wanted to eat there but it was way too early to pop in for a meal) and out into the beach. The beach was quiet but the lifeguards were out. We let Bubs run around in the sand before leaving. I did see a bit of garbage on the beach...people please clean up after yourselves. But yes, we love the beaches on LI and we have our favs. This is one of them, but if you're not a resident of the town you will pay a ton to park and for a pass. I think they stop charging after a certain time. But if you want to go for a beach day, it's worth it if you pack the car and go!

No need to lug all your stuff to your spot because your truck is right behind you. Week days this place is pretty quiet, which makes it even better, but the weekends can get crazy, so make sure you get there early. Please note there are rules to this beach. First you need a off road fishing permit and everything required to go with it (fishing poles, portable toilet, a shovel, tow cable, etc), you need a 4x4 SUV or truck (rear wheel drive or front wheel drive will just get you stuck, honestly I'm not even sure about AWD) and most importantly, this is a carry in, carry out beach. That means take your trash with you. There is no one here to pick up your garbage. Keep the beach clean. Also, there is a big un-written rule, you see someone get stuck, offer to help them out. It could happen to you one day.

Can get there by LIRR to Long Beach stop. We've only driven there. There's a toll plaza via the…read moreNY-878/Nassau Expressway/Atlantic Beach Bridge, a drawbridge. Or via Long Beach Blvd. which is around the middle of the island to/from the Oceanside area. Or via Loop Parkway which is more to/from eastern direction. By New York Ave, there's a ramp to the well-maintained boardwalk, with access ramps to the beach. Outdoor showers by the beach ramps. Clean restrooms. Snack place nearby. Please check their website for updated info. For this year, Beach passes are needed to get on the beach at specified times, $15/day for non-residents. We've gone at 5pm when it isn't too hot and passes no longer required. Not crowded the times we've gone. The sand/beach is very clean. Lifeguards only til 6pm. They were strict with the flags; will call your attention with their whistles if you swim outside the designated area.

You can rent beach umbrellas and chairs, which is super convenient. The rental stand only takes cash. We rented one umbrella and one chair and it was $45. The beach is very clean, with fine grain sand. They have green flags posted, which indicate designated areas where you can swim. Lifeguards are on duty. There are seagulls and other birds that hang around, but they won't bother you, even if you're eating. They will eat food that's left unattended and out in the open. Police rovers patrol the beach so I think rowdiness is discouraged. One party next to us was playing music on a speaker, but otherwise it was fairly quiet, except for the crashing waves of course. Lots of free nearby parking, but I imagine it fills up quickly on busy days.
