Great spot to catch a few frames or fish! Between the boat basin, restaurant, and sand beach there is plenty to do, and see. I came here for the full moon, with about 100 other photographers to catch the moon rising over the lighthouse across the inlet. 10/10 will be back. read more

Captree state park is located at the eastern most tip of Jones beach island, with access from ocean parkway as well as being a stop over on the way to Robert moses state park. Being one of the smaller state parks in New York what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in recreation. Known for its charter fishing fleet stationed on the North side of the park which embarks daily on fishing adventures (equipment provided) on the great South Bay or North Atlantic. There are two major fishing peers in the park one on the north and my favorite that over looks the Robert Moses causeway on the south, unlike the charter boats you are on you own with equipment for fishing off the peers but the good news is that there is a bait and tackle shop located near the North peer should you need some hooks or bait. Captree offers a bar and restaurant of sorts and concession stand if you're hungry after a long day of charter boat fishing or just stop in for the occasional live music. Don't forget to take a walk or bike ride on the ocean parkway green way, the trail head begins here and ends 13.7 miles away on jones beach. Come to captree to get out in the ocean air and maybe even have a picnic if you desire, the views from the south end on the overlook beach are fantastic. read more

Went on our Annual Fishing trip with the Dixie2 charter boat and had a great time. The staff aboard the boat were friendly and very helpful. My first catch of the day was a log!! Like literally a big piece of wood!! I was a little bummed that everything I caught had to be tossed back . Nonetheless the charter was great and they took us to several different spots to let our lines down. The staff was great and I would definitely recommend the Dixie 2 charter. read more

This is one of ny state parks that i never visited despite being resident for years. Glad that finally was able today. We came in to find ways to enjoy the season during this Covid time. To get back to one of his favorite things to do ( fishing), we came today as the weather forecast seemed favorable. My husband has never gone fishing and crabbing for ages . Glad he let me come today. My experience was unforgettable. On first visit , we were ate at east side fishing pier . It is long and maintained. It has a built in chair on the lower level. The upper level is likely designed for walkers . I have noticed numerous post lamps and looked that the place is well lit during dark. On second visit, we tried the west side fishing pier. It is longer . Water is shallow . The location is close to a picnic area which is good if have more company. If coming in after 7 am, the parking fee is $8. There are plenty of fishing boats for rental and accepts ticketed guests for a fee. A restaurant , a tackle and bait shop , a boat dock and a pump station are located in the middle of all. Beautiful view of the sunrise was witnessed. Definitely sunset view from this park is pretty amazing too. Swimming is not permitted along the shore line. Huge parking lot. read more

This is for the new bike way only. Once in a while NYS gets it right! This new bike way runs from Captree State Park to Jones Beach and Wantagh if you want to go that far (almost 20 miles). Flat and smooth, it runs right along the Ocean Parkway. Beware in summertime: little or no shade or water fountains. Other than that good job NYS (and our beleaguered governor). read more

Looking to chillax, get some sun, eat some BBQ and maybe do some fishing or crabbing? Captree State park has all that and more! Let's hit the beach! Not that far from the city, it's a mini getaway. Right on the beach there are BBQ grills and picnic tables. Walk over to the pier (which is not too far) and you can do some fishing or crabbing. Let's do some crabbing. There are a lot of spider crabs, so you will definitely want to throw those back. They may be the ugliest looking things to come out of the water. I've heard they are edible but not that tasty. There are 3 main species of crabs at Captree State Park: spider, blue claw, and calico. Crabbing is a waiting game. Its best to go when the tide is coming in and not at high tide. Also there are some guidelines that are posted up. Don't keep small ones (less than 4 1/2 inches), or female crabs filled with eggs. This gives them a chance to repopulated the ecosystem, so there is plenty of crabs to catch the next time around. Captree also has boat launches and a marina where you can charter a boat for excursions. Also in the area is a restaurant and a bait and tackle shop where you can buy your fishing and crabbing gear. After you drive past the admission booth and pay your toll, the road to the left leads to the marina, restaurant, stores, a kids playground and larger pier. The road on the right leads to the beach and BBQ area and also a smaller pier. Both are close enough that you can walk from one place to the other, but there is plenty of parking if you prefer driving over. After you get tired of crabbing, which is probably very soon because its a waiting game. Walk over to the beach and start up your BBQ grill. Bring a bunch of your peeps and you'll have a pretty good time! read more

My boyfriend and I I usually come here at least once during the summer. This winter we decided to pass by and walk the pier. Unfortunately, there was absolutely nothing going on. During the summer months people are crabbing off the pier and going on fishing excursions on the boats. I'm giving it 3 solid stars because even in the summer months the huge restaurant that's located onsite is either closed or completely empty. They have restrooms but they're a bit scary and if you're not going on an excursion or crabbing off the pier you really have nothing else to do here. They do have a small children's play area but like I said, it's small. There's nothing really bad to say about Captree. The problem is, there's nothing that makes it great either. Here's the Scoop: This is a fun family outing. Music, boat rides, food, vendors and games. Every year my family attends and we have a ball. The bands that play are great. They sing a variety of songs and have audience participation. The food is delicious! Many different food trucks are abound. There are tented tables as well as untented areas to sit. There's a boat ride that goes under the double span bridge and back about a 20-30 minute ride. Cotton candy, pretzels, hotdogs of course are available too. Vendors there have a wide variety of toys, jewelry, clothing and other unique items. Plenty of port-o-potties. Parking fee is what you pay to enter. Every year I've attended it's a little cool so a hoodie or sweater is needed but the breeze is lovely. Check this event out next year, it's really a nice event. read more

I came to captree once for fishing and crabbing. Just a disclaimer, I am very new with this fishing hobby. I have yet to catch a fish, but I did have some luck in collecting crabs with a crab cage. There is not size requirement for any of these crabs except if you catch a blue crab. I was told that catching a blue crab is extremely rare and if caught the requirement is 4.5 inches and it cannot be a female with eggs. I believe if you break the rules and get caught it's 50 dollars per female crab that has eggs. You are allowed to keep 50 crabs, again, follow the rules of face the consequences. It's also wise to follow the rules because you want there to be enough crabs for the days, months, and years to come. If you do come here and if fishing is a hobby for you, you won't be disappointed. Every time I come in always see somebody catch something, that itself is very exciting and the anticipation that you might catch something is exiliarating. Have fun fishing. read more

I love Captree! I always come here after hours to get in free, I believe it's 6pm. Either way I highly recommend this place for some stunning Photos of sunsets and the Robert Moses Causeway. If your coming for sunset shots then you'll want to go after 6:30 pm anyway so you won't have to pay. I don't fish but this is a popular fishing spot as well. This is also a great spot to come and have a bbq or just hang out with friends or even just take a stroll along the water under the causeway. It's usually pretty quiet and there are a lot less people around even in tourist season in the evening. The only down side is that there are a lot of gnats and mosquitoes in the evening. I had several photos with tiny black dots in them and once I had to pack it all up and leave because they got so bad! I won't take off stars for that though because you can't help nature and if your getting in free then it really isn't that big of a deal. During the day they aren't an issue. Also FYI the gnats tend to get the worst closer to the tall reeds that are near the water. So bring some bug spray and a hooded sweatshirt because it gets cold here quick and very windy! On clear nights there are spectular views of Fire Island and a good place for quiet time or just talking while sitting in a car. My former love taken me very few times which he asked me the biggest question that changed my life here. After sunset darkness dwells this park which makes it entirely impossible for beachgoers to see a thing. I would NOT highly recommend swimming at night as lifeguards are off-duty. However, a walk on the boardwalk or sitting in a car for star gazing into the ocean for life's reflection are highly recommended. As humans we all need to re-charge! read more

Captree, still the pretty much the same as ever. It's been about 3 years since my last visit. The last time I came, there were no blue crabs. The people then really didn't care for the rules. You are not suppose to keep the female crabs that have eggs!! Unfortunately, many older Asians, they all use to keep them, hide them in the bottom of their coolers or have their kids or grandchildren hide it in a different cooler in their car. I'm glad that the EPA and local police has started to enforce the rules more strictly here at Captree. They'll show up randomly and do an inspection which is great for the blue crab population. We didn't catch that many blue crabs this time but the good news is that they're back. When I was in college, you can catch blue crabs here by the dozens. Now, you're lucky if you can catch 2. The pier has not changed. The staff do the best of their ability to keep it clean. It's the people who come here and do not clean after themselves. From what I was told from one of the cleaners, most of the mess that is left behind are from the folks who have night fishing permits. Every morning, there's an abundance of trash, beer cans, fishing lines left behind on the pier and often gets blown into the water. So please, when you come to Captree, clean after yourself. There are plenty of garbage cans on this pier, there no reason for anyone to litter here. I walked over to the beach section over on the end of the parking lot. The beach is a little bit cleaner than before. Still a lot of pebbles, rocks, and seaweed. Not the ideal spot to lay down and relax. The restaurant is currently being renovated. However there is a sausage truck that is parked by the boating dock. The bait and tackle shop is still open. Verdict - Still a great place to be for crabbing and fishing. There are sea robins at the pier now. Before, there were just flukes, small blue fish, and blowfish. I caught a northern kingfish here once, had no idea what it was at the time and wasn't sure about the size regulations so I tossed it back into the ocean. My only complaint would just be the cleanliness of the pier. The pier could use a good pressure wash. The wood looks so heavily stained and dirty. read more

Captree is a really nice state park because its smaller size makes it more relaxing then the bigger parks. They have a really nice pier that is great for fishing or just hanging out, enjoying the views of the water, Robert Moses causeway and the Fire Island lighthouse. The marina area is huge and home to a large fleet of fishing charter boats. There are picnic tables, play areas and plenty of space for a picnic or BBQ. There's also a nice beach area and again the crowds are nothing compared to Jones Beach. If you're looking for some quiet time to commune with nature then this is the park for you!! read more

Bring some chicken legs and the cage thing to catch them, they have blue crabs and sand crabs, the second one being easier to get. However if you come after 6Pm its free. The only thing I did not enjoy in my trip here were the mosquitoes that came swarming us and ate us alive after 7Pm. You guessed it, This was the time we left. So many great memories fishing out of Captree State Park over the years. First time I ever fished was with my Grandpa, Dad and Uncles and I was about 10. I fell in love with fishing and it's been a tradition ever since for my family. Lots of charter boats to choose from at Captree, we've been on several different ones, the Laura Lee Fleet being our go to. We go for fluke or sea bass and for the most part we have a lot of action when we go out. Even when we have to throw fish back because they're not long enough, it's still fun to catch. Super family friendly, you don't have to be an expert fisherman (or fisherwoman) do go out and do some fishing. First timers will have no problem catching on quickly as the boats usually have great staff that will help you. This is no fancy place though, bring your wet one wipes, bring a towel for the pole to wipe your hands free of fish guts, bring your dramamine, the boats can get super rocky and if you're like me, bring your own soap dispenser because it's hit or miss whether the bathrooms on the boats will have any soap available. Pack your own lunch with a cooler, bring a coffee to sip and enjoy while you head out into the ocean and don't bring your cigarettes. Plenty of parking, plenty of fun, it's a great way to spend a day and the half day or full day options are nice for people who have never fished before and don't know if they'll like it. I came here several times during the summer. It's a nice day out, so we headed to Captree to catch some crabs for dinner. We got there around 5:30 PM and paid $6 for the entrance fee. If we waited till 6 PM it would've been free. We had a huge cooler with wheels for easy handling, packed with drinks like Mike's beer, snacks, and raw chicken drumsticks as bait for the crabs. There's a huge parking area, so there's plenty of parking. My friend and I put the baits on our ring nets and had it setup (we had like 10 of those) and we were ready to catch some crabs. Make sure you set it up in the direction the water is moving. The easiest way is to look at what other people are doing. Once everything was ready we opened a bottle of Mike's, sat down, and enjoyed the sunset. You can see a pretty amazing sunset over here. There's lots of space so spread yourselves out. When it was time to pull up all our nets, we threw back the crabs that were too small, the female ones (they are funny looking, you'll know it when you see one, if you don't throw it back and you happen to get check, you will receive a fine) and we kept the one blue ones (male) with the right size. We fished also but didn't catch anything. Nighttime came and we caught enough crabs and we got ready to leave. You can actually see a lot of stars in the sky. read more

I've come here a lot when I was a kid for BBQ'ing and picnicking with my extended family for several years - and this often included some fishing and crabbing. Suddenly, my family, for some reason, decided to stop. Years later, I came back only to realize that erosion had taken most of the picnicking area, but it had not stopped me from seeing why I liked coming back here. It's always been a nice, relaxing place to relax and have some fun with whomever you bring with you. I've even managed to go on the fishing boats a couple times, which was fun as hell. Today was a special tribute in my continuing Birthday saga. We made more festive with The bottle of Johnnie Walker Swing scotch. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! If you've never seen Johnnie Walker Swing, the bottle has a rounded bottom so it can rock back and forth on the boats without tipping over. Perfect, for the occasion! My friend Mike and myself made numerous toasts on the water's edge to our recent milestone birthdays that we both had accomplished this year. Planning our next fishing trip and Getting The remaining few of our "Band of Brothers" together again. The seabirds screeched, took wing and soared. And we raised our glasses to Friends.. No More. Went today from 6am-7pm. Only caught extremely small sea robin, crabs, fluke, along with a blackfish. None of our target fish were caught by anyone (6 family members) and the amount of SEAWEED was insane. Every time you cast your line you immediately thought you had a deadweight fish because the amount of weight that the seaweed added. Not only that but the water was shallow. Had 2lb weights and as soon as you dropped your line, you were practically at the bottom already. Was really excited for this trip but it was a let down. read more

Spending quality time with kids sometimes requires going to a place where all can just hang out and enjoy doing something fun such as fishing and crabbing. I will always remember when my son and I caught our first batch of crabs and giving each other high fives. I guess kids all love the idea of catching something. In my son's case, he loves seafood. So he had the patience to just wait and hope to catch more crabs to take home, cook and eat. Captree State Park is definitely one of those places to spend time with family either to fish/crab or have a picnic/bbq. You can go fishing or catch crabs off the pier or pay a fee to ride on the chartered fishing boats. There is also a picnic/bbq area and a sand park in the vicinity. There is no charge for parking before 6 am so early starters save $8 for parking. For crabbers, you can't take home crabs that are less than 4.5 inches and crabs that are pregnant. You'll be fined if you're caught b/c inspectors do walk around and will check. I added a star because my time there with my son was very memorable. read more

Ok park right in the middle of the Great South Bay. It's very small but it has a playground, docks where you can fish off of and a restaurant selling over priced fried fish and burgers. On the opposite side of the parking lots are small out coves where you can have a picnic. Just watch out for poison ivy along the trails. There's a lot of it. I also recommend not wearing sandals or flip flops due to ticks. Bring bug spray too if staying for sunset or you'll get eaten alive by mosquitoes. read more

This is such a beautiful place for some summer fun. When the weather was nice over the summer, I used to come here fishing or crabbing. There' s a tackle and bait store in there so you'll have everything you need there, even rental equipments. There is also a parking fee which is only a couple of dollars and you can park there the whole day. It's right near Robert Moses Beach so you can decide to go fishing on one end and then swimming/tanning on the other end. There's a charter boat that sails out pretty often and it's not bad for about $25pp for 2 hours. I heard this place got destroyed during Sandy and I hope it's ok now. read more

There are lots of boats that you can board to take you deeper into the Atlantic. Or go on their long wooden pier and sit on the many benches to go fishing or crabbing. The pier goes out pretty deep into the ocean and it's well maintained. People catch blue crabs and fish like flounder/fluke. Can get busy during summer weekends.
