    enjoying nature

Hi Friends and Yelpers! Welcome to Beautiful Osprey Park, on the water in Shirley, Long Island. I remember coming here 20 years ago, it was a little bar where my friend Mikey and I used to go for cocktails. When the bar went out of business, we would walk down here and hang out near the abandoned bar building and enjoy the ocean views. Mikey half joked that he should buy the place. Now, he's glad he didn't. He bought property a few blocks away. So now stands a spot of beautiful solace and peace called Osprey Park. And yes, there are osprey here. And if you're really lucky you'll get to see them go fishing. It has been many years since I had walked down here. Imagine my surprise when I found the park that was just an idea back in the day. Now a most beautiful reality. One of the most scenic fishing spots on Long Island, the bait fish get pushed into this little cove and are chased by (waiting to be caught)..cocktail Blues and other Hungry Fish. The fishing dock goes far out into the water and is almost as good as having a boat. Many folks launch their canoes and kayaks from this spot. Now there is a beautiful children's playground here. Admist the well tended flower Gardens, Osprey nests, fishing docks and the so wonderfully restored statue of little Annie with a bird in her hand. She gazed out on the ocean for years welcoming visitors to the entrance of the Smith points Park. I remember seeing her and other statues every time we would go there. One day the statues were gone. I learned that has been horribly vandalized by heartless people. The statue had both of her legs broken and it took a skilled feat of artistry and love to bring her back. Now she looks out on the waters once again and welcomes home birds that journey here from across the seas. Just last week she was officially commemorated and unveiled. She's now named little Annie after John the caretaker's wife. Osprey Park is such a wonderful, beautiful and peaceful place to come and contemplate, relax and enjoy nature. John and Annie are looking for volunteers now to help with the maintenance of beautiful Osprey Park. What a dream job I would almost pay them! I would be there to help in a moment if I didn't live so far away now. To all young adults what a wonderful experience this would be. Volunteer! Wouldn't this volunteer work look great on your college application resume? Come on, give John, Annie and the Ospreys a helping hand. I dedicate this review not only to the story of the perseverance of the statue little Annie but also my dear friend Carol B. Carol lived just a few blocks away and was a member of the Brookhaven Town Council. She worked hard to preserve nature and spots like osprey Park. Carol was also the wife of my best friend Mikey. She worked her whole life to preserve the beautiful nature of Long Island. The Long Island plastic bag ban was one of her most Noble efforts. Sadly, Carol passed away 3 years ago almost to this day. She passed of the horrific cancer that has taken so many of my female friends who live on Long Island. Carol had told me of a dream she had once in which all the trees no longer had leaves but only plastic bags in their dead branches. She fought hard for the rest of her life so this would not come to be. I think of Carol often and especially when I come to Osprey Park. Located just blocks from where she would smile, live and laugh. Thank you so much to John and Annie. Thank you to Carol and the Long Islanders who worked so hard to make and preserve this beautiful place of nature.

I can't believe you can just rent a boat here with no prior experience at all, but honestly this…read morewas pretty great. I booked a day boat here for an afternoon with four of my girlfriends. Upon check-in we'd learned that the limit is typically 4 people (700 lb maximum), but since most of us are pretty small we were well under that weight limit even as five people, so they allowed it (and I lived to write this review so, all good). After signing my life away and a very quick motor tutorial by a kid who looked like he couldn't be older than middle school, we were on our way. The motor on this boat took a little getting used to, but once I got the hang of it I was a pretty good captain (I'd like to think). We put down the anchor and got out to explore Bird and Gull Islands, then headed over to another beach with a hill to climb up and get a bird's eye view of the area. Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the harbor, but we kept the party going with some drinks and food (will review that separately). Jay (who I think is the owner or manager?) told us we were only allowed to rent a boat if we took a picture and it turns out he was serious (see the photo shoot results in my photos which turned out pretty cute). He took these on his phone so not sure what else he plans to do with them.

Beautiful spot with an outstanding staff to ready boats and life jackets for boaters. Early on…read moreSaturday is quiet and calm then things get busy as boaters show up. At noon the food stand opens where you can get a beautiful lobster roll as well as many other foods and drinks. Ice cold beer and lobster roll was superb. Gift shop is fun. I highly recommend this spot for a lovely day in East Moriches.

The park trails need maintenance as there are overgrown trees, and laid over trees across paths. Some of the trail access have planks of wood for soft ground that is rotting away. Trails are not marked and website map is difficult to read. Some of the docks on the water are inaccessible from shore.

Everything will look the same and there's a lot twists and turns. It has happened to me and I'm pretty well versed in hiking and trails. My swissy loves it here. He's not really a runner, so trails and lots of stuff to sniff and check out are his thing. It's pretty busy in the on season and relatively desolate in the off season, but it's nice either way. If you don't mind bundling up, doing some off season walking and hiking might be for you. It's very beautiful and extremely quiet, almost too quiet. I have always felt safe here. As a lady, it can be off putting to be in a large place alone but I always see rangers here and there even if other people aren't around. Many people bring their dogs to run and hike- most are good but as with any public place there are always some bad eggs. I would deff check this one out if you haven't. I often find that we stop and just watch nature. It's a really great way to get out and do something that feels different each time you go. Most of the photos are of my dog but you get an idea of what it looks like!
