I've been to a bunch of upstate orchards, so I suppose it was inevitable I'd wind up here soonSer or later: So yeah... I've experienced my share of over-commercialized, overcrowded Hudson Valley apple picking spots and am so over it. 'Cause isn't there something oxymoronic or maybe just simply moronic about driving two hours to escape the mobs 'n mayhem of NYC only to encounter more of the same? This time around I wanted tranquil 'n bucolic ish and am happy to report that's exactly what I got. As others have mentioned, the actual Orchard is a two-minute drive from the Farm Market. If you put this Market address in your GPS, there is lots of signage once you get there to direct you to the Orchard. Once you arrive, you'll have an option to go for either a $17 bag or a $26 bag, and when we were there at least, they were accepting credit cards. The Orchard is on the smaller side and very walkable. The pick-worthy apples are clearly labeled. I think this was a very good season for apples, especially compared with last year, so there were plenty for us to choose from in Mid-October. Only frustrating thing was that this Orchard does not believe in using pickers for some reason, so there were some apples that were too high to reach, but no big deal. Fwiw, came here with another family and the unanimous consensus was that the sweet 'n tart, epically crisp 'n juicy Empire apples were the most delicious eating apples we picked, so be on the lookout for those. LOVED the Market, which offered a great selection of items, including some GORGEOUS beefsteak tomatoes for a mere $1.99 lb. that I snatched up to eek out a last taste of summer. The Cider Donuts were among the best I've tried and we are currently working our way through a lovely Apple Crumb pie that also surpasses most of what's out there. ($14.95 nets you a whole pie; $8.95'll get you half). Also spotted apple dumplings, cheese curds, homemade nut butters, including chocolate hazelnut, not to mention the usual jams and honeys. Stayed for Burgers, which a couple of teens were grilling up outside. They tasted exactly like a couple teens grilled 'em up if I'm being honest, but I think they were only $6.50 and in combination with the scenery and live folk music, we were happy to just hang. Am sure the fantastic (read: dry and "just like in Europe," per the charming bartender) hard cider I was sipping, courtesy of the nearby Tasting Room didn't hurt either.:) Hubby also went nuts for a canned IPA and he is usually a total on-tap snob. As others have noted there is a real (!) Pumpkin Patch here, though we did not partake. We arrived at about 11 on a drizzly, overcast Sunday and enjoyed a very peaceful, low key experience apple picking, with it getting more crowded as the sun peeked out and it got later in the separate Market area. But nothing nearly as overwhelming as what we've endured elsewhere. Plus all the chatty, friendly staff we encountered added a personal touch that really set this place apart for us. TL;DR: If you're looking for a big Orchard with all the bells 'n whistles, you probably won't be into this spot. But if you want a quality experience at a place that doesn't nickel and dime you for every little thing, you will fall in love with this Orchard soonSer or later, just as we did.:) ps Alas, the bathroom situation here consisted of Porta Potties, which I am way too phobic to ever use, but reports from those I was with is that were clean as far as these things go. read more

I've been coming to this place for many years. Haven't been here for the hayride in a few years but came back today with my friend and her two boys. They had a blast. The store did a fabulous job orchestrating how many people in the store were allowed in at a time but the line went very fast. They have added lots of new things to the agenda. While you're waiting for your hayride you can have something to eat or have a beer outside. Dogs welcome. They had a great selection of pumpkins including white pumpkins which I bought. The prices were extremely reasonable for the pumpkins. Of course no visit would be complete without getting cider donuts and lots of delicious treats that you only get when you come here. They redid the space on the inside so it looks like a lot more parts of the store have product. The cider donuts were moved to the corner of the store where now you can get three different kinds. Ok, if you want some of the best tasting fresh cider then this is your place! They have a plethora of apples ranging from hybrids to heirloom! The apple cider donuts here set the standard for all others to follow. The staff Is friendly and the tasting room is usually open if you want to try some new spirits. This drive is beautiful and we take it every three-four weeks to stock up on cider and fresh produce. Soons won our hearts this past fall and we are glad to have stumbled upon this Gem! The pies are pretty good as well and they always have fresh baked items! They have a diverse selection of squash; that alone gets me excited to go each time! Growing up in Middletown, Soons was a staple in the fall. Now that I am an adult that can enjoy the hard cider as well, it is a staple YEAR ROUND. I love this place. The staff are all super friendly. They are very helpful in helping you find exactly what you need if you have any questions. I come here when visiting my parents and fill up growlers to enjoy that weekend (12$ a fill). They even have a tasting room so you can sample all they have to offer from their own orchard! They have recently renovated the side room and it would be a lovely place for an event. I have heard they host events with local chefs too. Now that it is autumn, the place gets pretty busy and even has a guy to help direct parking. The kids at the counter are efficient so the line goes quickly, just make sure to find someone old enough to fill your growler if you come for that. We always grab some of the delicious donuts (6 for 4$) and they are gone within the afternoon. You cannot just have one. You are fooling yourself if you think you can! I also really enjoy their brownies and other pastries. I am so glad they have been crushing it all this time. Never leave me! read more

"Dinner at the farm"; what can I say it was delightful! Chef Shawn Hubbell was extraordinaire. Last night's meal focused on the local treats available in mid spring. We had a lovely wilted green salad with local asparagus and greens sourced from local.farms. Dinner was roasted chicken served with sauteed ramps, another local treasure. Finally a rhubarb tart topped with ice cream was served for desert. Everything was outstanding and Sean provided wonderful.demos filled with so many tips and ideas. The Soon's family were wonderful hosts from start to finish. A goodie bag filled with apples and cider made the best parting gift. Apples are tiny. There is a sign that says it is because of dry conditions. In reality the trees are in critical need of pruning. There are so many shoots on the trees, all the nutrients are going to shoots not the apples. Plus there is poison ivy vines in the trees. My boyfriend is from Middletown, NY, but moved to Florida to be with me about two years ago. He was always telling me about Soons and how much he missed it. No apple pie was good enough down here! This weekend I was able to see why. I loved getting to visit this sweet market. You were so busy! We were glad to see you doing well. Unfortunately we didn't get to do any picking, as we wanted to give our parking spot back (not complaining, we were in the market a long time, haha). The donuts are delicious and there was a lovely selection of fresh, juicy apples. I loved the sample table as it convinced us to buy hummus and peanut butter. We also tried and bought some apple cider (SO GOOD!) The two young girls at the cash registers were very polite and helpful, allowing me to try things and offered good suggestions for what types of apples to buy. All around I was so glad to finally experience your wonderful place and he was so excited to be back "home". :) Cannot wait to visit again soon! (P.S. First things first. The u-pic apple orchard is at a different location than the market. You can purchase apple bags, but you must have cash if you buy them at the u-pic orchard. The apple orchard is bigger than it looks upon first impression. Macouns were plentiful but some of the more interesting varieties were picked over or those available were higher up. You are not allowed to climb the trees, but my family created a little work around. If you are less cirque de soleil inclined then I suggest bringing your own pickers. We managed to squeeze a boatload of apples in the small bag ($15). The larger size seemed troublesome to carry. We had such a great time. There was a mild mannered polish gentleman who drove a maserati. That was awesome. After picking we drove over to the farmer's market. The market boasts a cider mill and tasting room. Tickets to the u-pic pumpkin patch are ($2). They give you a little instruction on how to properly detach the pumpkin from its vines without breaking the stem. Upon returning to the main market area your pumpkins are weighed and priced by the pound. The market itself is filled to the brim with every form of abundance from the farm. The tomatoes are the best I've ever seen at a farmer's market. When you pick them up you can smell the tomatoes. They are heavy and ripe with sunlight. They have a sample for everything they make. Fruit salsa, regular salsa, humus, black bean dip. They offer donuts. And, a ridiculous bounty of old fashioned baked goods: turnovers, pies, berry scones, brownies, cookies. I bought a few jars of their preserves. The plum was tart, not too sweet. Just perfect. We did the cider tasting ($5 for 6 tastes) and found all but one exquisite. I am not a big cider drinker but Soons cider has a level of almost non-sweetness it is incredibly drinkable. You can enjoy it by the growler, the bottle, or the glass. Inside the tasting room they also offer bottles of some of the best artisinal, local gin, vodka, etc. We sampled an incredible local gin. We sat outside at the picnic tables and enjoyed our provisions: freshly made sandwiches from the grill. Grilled cheese with apples, bratwurst with bacon and sauerkraut, little yellow tomatoes, cider and some homemade fudge. It was a delightful day all around. As other reviewers mentioned the valets are a bit discombobulated. The overall vibe is chaotic. Just pretend you are at a family event and you may find it lively and charming, rather than distressful. read more

Had an absolutely fantastic time here today. Apple picking, pumpkin picking, and an enjoyable outdoor lunch at the Taproom. Some leisurely tastings, charcuterie, and fall foliage. We came here last weekend for apple picking, but more so for the baked goods! We were not disappointed with either! The apple orchard for picking is just down the road from the store. The parking is free for both. The orchard has rows and rows of apple trees. Not all are ready to be picked of course, but they label each row with type of apple and which rows are ripe & ready. Nicely organized, in my opinion. The store is decently sized with a wide variety of yummy things to buy! The warm cider here is delicious! You could buy a cup and sit outside with some delicious baked goods or have a hot dog from their grill. Or buy a gallon of cider to take home. As for the baked goods, the cider donuts (powdered being my personal preference over cinnamon or plain) are EXCELLENT, as is the apple pie!! I brought the pie to work and people told me it was the best apple pie they've ever had! The apple turnover is good but nothing compared to the pie. I can't go back to try a different pie as well! Soons is quite a trek for me so I can't come up from NJ often, but it's close to Woodbury Outlet (yay shopping!) so I'm happy to make a trip of it once in a while. And I tried Hacklebarney Cider Mill closer to me in NJ this weekend, and their donuts were not as good as Soons (and more expensive at $8.95/doz - Soons being in the $6-7 range I believe)! read more

Review for the marketplace area only. We decided to come here on a whim after being a bit disappointed at a nearby Pumpkin Picking farm, and we are glad we did. While turning in off the main road you can go one way to the market or the other way for pumpkin and apple picking. Both pumpkin and apple picking ended at 4 PM so we didnt get the experience that. We were told that though pumpkin picking was finished, they were still selling them at the marketplace. Though the crowds had thinned out a bit there was still a lot of people there surprisingly. In fact we had to park in the "extra parking" lot and walk down a bit to the store. Luckily there were parking attendants directing people where to go and coordinating the available parking spaces in both lots. There was a wide vairety of pumpkins to pick from at the marketplace. The prices were very fair at $0.49 per pound. There is a seating area in the back with a little grilling station serving up chicken wings, hot dogs, beer and wine. We had 12 wings ($10), a hot dog (Sabrett Brand - $2.50) and a cup of apple cider ($2). Everything was good. I believe there was also live music there earlier as we saw a small band packing up for the day. There was a place for Cider tasting but we did not do that. We did go into the market which had lots of fruits and veggies and lots of pastries and homemade baked items. There was a line of about 10-12 people right outside of the market for donuts. The donuts are sold at a separate window right outside the market. Overall we had a great experience here and I hope to return (maybe next year) for some picking and just spend an early afternoon there. The environment was perfect. Technically you could go buy a few grill items and sit and enjoy some live music without any admission fees. I also liked that everything was well organized. From the parking lot attendants to the donut window...little things like that show you that they know what they are doing. read more

Tasting room is amazing!! Thanks for creating holiday drinks that were so good that I stopped looking at prices. Pumpkin picking? Yes please, just got off the tractor and I've got a 20 lb pumpkin to carve and toast up the seeds. I pulled mine right off the vine and was able to get some pics with even bigger pumpkins while walking around the patch. Apple picking? I got so many apples that I've never herd of but I was able to eat like 3 while walking around and then cooked 3 pies when we got back. Mixed and matched colors and textures and it was awesome. Lastly there is a Store that serves cider and cider donuts. We are now required to bring these items while traveling to family functions. What a great farm. read more

Orchard is small and down the street from the actual Soons store/pumpkin patch. It is low key if that's what your looking for. Did get good apples. Down the road is the market and pumpkins. Nice sample station set up, cider is amazing. I was VERY upset when Donuts ran out after 4pm. Other items in store seem good, a little pricey. A hidden gem tucked away in the country farmland of the Middletown/Goshen area. Great tasting room with a friendly, enthusiastic staff. Highly recommend the NY Strawberry cocktail if you're looking for something refreshing, delicious and full of taste. Make sure to ask the bartender to "spank the basil." We visited a few other nearby hotspots for drinks, but Soons takes the cake for the best drink. And they were $2-3 cheaper and twice the size! Spent some time in the store and picked up their homemade sugar donuts and a apple crumb pie. Yum! When we pulled out of the parking lot we were already planning our next trip back. Apparently every month they do a harvest dinner featuring local produce-- would love to check it out the next time around. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to check this place out after being enticed by a Groupon for a tasting. There is nothing fancy or pretentious about Soons, which we appreciated and we had a nice afternoon hanging out. We did the tasting and the gentleman who attended to us did a great job explaining each drink. We could have chatted with him all afternoon since he was so easy to speak with. We enjoyed a live band, who were from NYC and definitely gave off that city vibe. We are officially obsessed with their Ten 66 sipper cider. A little expensive, but since you drink so little at a time, it lasts.....so I say splurge if you love your tasting and are a little taken aback by paying $60 for a small bottle. I would further recommend stopping at their little market next to the tasting room and getting some cider donuts to go. I'm looking forward to returning and getting my next donut and cider fix soon! read more

What a gem! Local good vegetables and nice folks and it's picturesque to the maximum extent. The farmer's market building part is like a barn, with a lot to choose from, every kind of squash, potatoes, tomatoes (tasting like homegrown) sublime peaches and melons and corn in summer, magnificent apples now, in many varieties. If you are cooking tonight, check the bargain cart for everything that needs to be eaten now, or for "ugly" fruits and veg--they taste terrific and are indeed bargains. The fresh cider is irresistible. They carry Freedom Hill Farms kefir and yoghurt, local eggs, lots of things from other nearby farms and sources. The baked goods are terrific--I'd hit this joint for a pie if I was planning to have company for dinner, and I'd hit it for a cider doughnut simply to enrich my life. They have good gift things like decorative soups mixes and fudge and maple candy. I definitely plan to include it in my Christmas shopping. But for now, it's a staple of my weekly grocery experience. Soon to be a regular! Love this place. It was mentioned by my friend. Picked up almond butter, chocolate covered sunflowers seeds, cider donut that was screaming.. Eat me!!!!!!, apple cider and a home made baked dog treat. I am def gonna buy some fresh fruits/veges, although they had a small selection, maybe its different at different times of the year? I used my credit card but its a $10.00 minimum. They also have home made goodies, cheeses, honey, maple syrup, homemade soups, the list goes on! Theres also right next door, a wine tasting room. Disclaimer: I did not do the picking here so I can't comment about that. I did however enjoy their absolutely delicious cider and donuts. I've had a number of different apple ciders and donuts from this area and around the country. Whirl I've had better cider elsewhere, I haven't in this part of New York. I haven't hands down had better cinnamon sugar apple cider donuts. The ones here are really, really good. What is also awesome about this place is the cider tasting. There is a half outdoors, half indoors bar shack thing right next to the main store. They make their own hard cider in house and have several different varieties in addition to a great collection of different forms of alcohol to purchase. Their cider is delicious, reasonably priced and for a $5 tasting, you can't go wrong. read more

He did a terrific job talking about everything from the grafting of apple trees to which apple makes the best pie. You can tell that he's very passionate about farming. This place has the best apple cider I ever tasted. I travel about an hour and a half just to come here and it's worth the trip. I always get two gallons haha I love their donuts and almond butter! Love having this place/concept in my backyard! The Farmer's Market has a large variety of produce as well as delicious, locally made treats. The Tasting Room has refreshing ciders and cocktail drinks, but the bar is small and overcrowded/unable to accommodate tastings comfortably on the weekend, with a crowd. There are large sitting areas both inside and outside, but they should consider taking away/decrease the indoor seating and make a bigger bar area. The only reason I rate this less place less than a five is because many of staff are RUDE! The Market Place gets very crowded and although they so well in moving the line fast, the workers are never overly friendly and I have overheard a number of rude comments, which is a major turn-off. Customer Service is key and can make a great place exceptional or a great place left with a bad taste in your mouth. read more

Stopped here today on our tour of the Orange County countryside. DW used to visit here as a child to get Apple Pies and she wanted to relive her youth. I can't speak for the Orchard piece but the farm market is very nice. A great selection of local produce as well as good niche products such as locally made salsa. We picked up some apple cider donuts which were better than anything we've had at Dunkin Donuts as well as some homemade oatmeal raisin cookies which were excellent and also some apple turnovers. They have a large selection of home made pies in various fruit flavors. Not as great a selection as other farm markets and orchards. You have to determine what items are grown there and which are brought in by asking someone since they're not clearly marked. The pies and baked goods( ones we tried are the sugar free apple and the regular scones) they sell there are the worst. Dry and tasteless. They do have some decent stuff there so I can't give it a 1 and the staff is very helpful and they have good info if you ask. After leaving my review ,the owner actually replied with her number and email and explained that there was a mix-up with the tomatoes that day and that after me sending a picture of the pie said that it was obvious that the cider they use never made it into the pie. She was very apologetic and refunded the monies for the pie and scones. Because the owner is a true professional who truly cares for her customers and business I raised up to a three. We will revisit to give a second chance in the case this was just a one off experience. read more

I am not sure what has happened over the past few years but Soon's Orchard is not the same. Shopped there today. It is peach season. Hardly any peaches and the ones that were there were packed in small containers only. Had to by three instead of one large one, which I assume could have cost me less. For some reason they cut the silks off of their sweet corn. Why? Dark brown silks indicate "ready for picking". Are they hiding the fact that maybe they are picking too soon? And, I got home and looked at my receipt and I was charged for two items I did not purchase; a clementine for 69 cents and a grapefruit for $1.39. Small charge but why? Additionally, I am not convinced they are selling tomatoes that are grown on their farm. To much like those I can purchase at any supermarket. I have been in the horticulture field for over 55 years and actually teach horticulture. I think it is time to head somewhere else where I can feel more confident as to what I am buying. read more
