The service is sometimes not up to par but the food always exceeds. We have been getting our food to go in the last 2 years and so we haven't had recent server experience. read more

Sonora grill is amazing. I absolutely love this place. The best thing on the menu is the crispy avocado tacos. They are to die for. The reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because, the batter that the avocado is fried in has milk product in it, therefore making it non-vegan. It is very easy to make it a vegan option and I would love to see Sonora make the effort to change the batter recipe to be vegan since it is on the vegan menu. read more

We really wanted to like Sonora Grill... it just wasn't good. My boyfriend and I visited Sonora's on a slow Monday night, and immediately checked in on Yelp. To my delight, there was a checkin coupon for 50% off any appetizer-- SCORE!! I ordered the queso fundito and showed the server our coupon on my phone; she said to mark it used and would deduct it from our bill. Yeah... that never happened. The queso was (while the table-side prep was impressive) just not very good. It was very dense and coagulated so quickly it was like eating a block of cheese... which ordinarily would be tasty, but was definitely not what we had in mind when we ordered. My boyfriend ordered the beef enchiladas and I ordered the chicken fajitas. The beef enchiladas were inedible. No... seriously. The beef was SOOOOO SALTY (this is coming from a self proclaimed salt lover). The beef was so salty it couldn't be eaten... not even when we tried layering a bite of enchilada with rice or beans. I mean, how could they have even served that? Again, not borderline inedible; legit, inedible. The chicken fajitas... I think the chef just might have a "heavy hand," the chicken was also salty, but wasn't inedible due to the salt... this time the chicken was SMOTHERED in cheese. Again, I LOVE cheese, but I couldn't even taste the chicken! The thick melted cheese was like a salty thick glue that coated everything on the plate. You know, the interior of this place was clean, the restaurant was in a trendy part of the city, the server (while she must have forgotten about the discount) was super nice; but this isn't a cheap taco stand. The ends just don't justify the means here... We'd have been 1000x happier with a couple steak soft tacos and a quesadilla from Taco Bell. read more

Sonora Grill - The bill for our meal... waitress didn't deduct the 50% off or appetizer after we showes her the Yelp checkin promo and said she would. - Mexican Near Me - Ogden, Utah

We stopped here as part of Ogden's Restaurant Week and had an appetizer and entree for $10 each! We enjoyed snacking on their huge chips (size of a corn tortilla) and red/green salsas. The red was more tomato based and not my favorite but the green was a bright, fresh lime and tomatilla style salsa. It was delicious. I loved their guacamole and hubby loved his beef taquitos for appetizers. I had the pork Tinga as my entree and liked all the flavors it brought together. The pickled onions were a nice touch! Hubby had the pork Carnitas Tacos and devoured them. Great flavors, fresh tasting ingredients and fun atmosphere. Service was excellent and the prices were good. We'd definitely come back to explore more of the menu! I'd say it has more of an upscale feel inside than a traditional American Mexican place like most of us are used to. read more

It was busy on a Saturday night around 6pm. The hostess said it would be about an hour wait unless we wanted to eat at the bar bc seats were available so I decided to sit there. Starters . Guac trio: comes with guac and almonds, guac with bacon and guac with pineapple Mango salsa. I love sweet things so my fave was the pineapple salsa. If you like more of a smoky favor guac, then you'll love bacon. All guacamoles were equally delicious. Also instead of chips, they serve with fried tortillas with free refills. The guac also comes with salsa! Red and green. Neither one of them are hot but have a different flavor. Entrees: Sweet pork- comes with coconut rice, tortilla strips and pico. All entrees come with tortillas. You can choose from flour or corn. The bartender recommended flour bc he said that's how his mom served it when he was younger so I went with that. The portions are big but I wish it came with more than just 2 tortillas . If you want more than 2 they will charge you an extra 1.50. The pork was tender and delicious without being too sweet. I didn't even need my knife bc it was so tender! They don't skimp on the meat either. They load your plate up! I was able to have big chunks of meat with every bite! Pork with chili rellenos: the chili was stuffed with a creamy white cheese I forgot what it was called but it was huge and very good. Smothered in verde sauce and came with rice, black beans, pico and guac and a different type of salsa. It wasn't very spicy but had just the right amount of heat. We took home leftovers! The bartender I had for the night was Fernando and I really liked his customer service. I haven't been to Sonora for 4 years so I forgot what most of the menu tasted like but he was kind to answer all my questions and was patient when I needed time to make my final decision. We small talked here and there as he did with every customer and was super fast at making all the drinks and refills. I noticed that he didn't have to ask what refill anyone wanted bc he remembered. A lot of people would come up and set their empty glass down and Fernando was already on top of it making another. I appreciate the quality service he gave last night. Unfortunately I don't live in Ogden and an hour drive is far but if I'm ever in Ogden again I'll be sure to stop by and give Sonora my business. They were great! read more

I use to love this place not anymore. Went about 3 weeks ago asked for iced tea they were out of it! The menu has changed less variety. Ordered chimichanga you have to pay extra for rice and beans. Now you will also pay 4.00 for chips and salsa. They use to be complementary. I can't stand being nickeled and dimmed to death. Food queasy not like it use to be. I can spend 30.00 on a lunch at other places and get iced tea. read more

Per the usj: "Too Long; Didn't Read" below. -- I'm always one to "vampire away from the sun" (full scream and all) when I hear people talk about Ogden. Though I feel I have spent a pretty good amount of time in the older sections of Ogden, I never knew about the flasher, newer, more hip and fun sides of O-Town - the one that includes Sonora Grill. Sonora Grill is what I'd call an upscale Mexican Food restaurant - something that I'm usually hesitant about (good Mexican food does NOT need to be pricey), but after my first visit, and seeing all of their aspects that are SO down my area of foodie, Sonora Grill has quickly become one of my favorite Mexican Food spots in Utah. After enticing me with talk of Mexican food, I agreed to an awesome date to visit Sonora Grill in Ogden (keee!). We got in perfectly to our reservation time, but were still told we'd have to wait a couple of minutes (I was fine with this, I stood right next to the mini space heater and warmed my feet). After being seated, we dove into the drinks menu (though we both were boring and ordered beers), as well as the appetizer menu. Who could go wrong with table-side guacamole? So of course we had to order the delicious green fruit mixture to go with our selections of tasty salsas (including the habanero one.) -Aspect #1 of SG that I adored: Not often can you find Mexican food that is purely catered to the Vegan/Vegetarian population. Sonora Grill has an entire separate menu for the meat-less humans - an utter rarity. So I, of course, now having all of the options, and not being use to such a selection, took forever deciding what to order. My cute date decided to go with the Ceviche (which looked AMAZING), and the Blackened Fish Tacos (Which we were told were nice and spicy). Both of which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy, but was unable to finish as it was so filling. I, on the other hand, after internal struggle, deliberation and moments of pure life reflection, went with the Vegan Alambres - aka Vegan Fajitas. Usually I'm one to say "put cheese on everything" but this was one dish I did not want to bastardize in such a way, so I stuck with the purely vegan. It was excellent. The portobello mushrooms were cooked to perfection, and the delicious bite of the anaheim pepper very much accentuated the meal. This was one I also had to take home... so much food, but a wonderful left-over to look forward to. -Aspect #2 of SG that I adored: Everything is made from scratch in house, with no added preservatives. Right down my alley. Such a healthier, amazing and extremely fresh option. Why are all places not like this?! -Aspect #3 of SG that I adored: All the delicious, ginormous corn chips, that you can smash 'til your heart's content. Hulk smash on the chips + delicious salsas + guacamole.... have you hopped in your car to head over yet? I've learned to start speaking more nicely about Ogden, now that Sonora Grill is housed there. There is no way I would not return when I'm craving an amazing Vegan Mexican food meal. That hour drive from SLC is worth the titillating food you'll be putting into every cell of your body. -- TL;DR: Yes, Sonora Grill seems to be a very upscale Mexican Food restaurant, and yes, it deserves to be. Everything they make is from scratch, in house, staying away from all preservatives, and also welcoming Herbivores in with open arms. I really don't think it gets much better than that. Table-side guacamole is a necessity if you're an avocado lover, and ask for the Habanero Salsa for a little added heat. After looking over the menu, and if you're a true Mexican food lover, I really don't think you can go wrong with ordering anything that sounds delicious. Be adventurous. Have fun. Smash the hell out of those endless, huge corn chips. You'll feel like a kid again, while burning your taste buds with spicy salsas. read more

Sonora Grill leans heavily to the authentic side of Mexican food. Very nice atmosphere, good menu, good food. I went here a few times before reviewing in an effort to provide a fair review. Sonora has all the right pieces food, atmosphere etc but can be inconsistent. After coming here three times I must say I like the food, I especially the habanero salsa and the puerco pibil (aka sweet pork). The pork is served in numerous ways, tacos, burritos , quesadilla, etc, and it is good any way you get it. When you come in you get chips and two salsas, a tomatillo green sauce and a smokey red sauce, both good, but if you like the heat you need to ask for the hot habanero sauce it is great. The rub (and a pet peeve of mine) is they charge you for the habanero salsa, sure it is only 90 cents but with this being a mid level priced Mexican establishment why is it necessary to charge for salsa? In my trips to Sonora the service was very good a couple of times and moderate to lacking on one occasion so I am batting .666 not bad but would prefer 100%. So in summary, give Sonora a try, more than likely you will find something you have not experienced elsewhere and it will be tasty. read more

Came here with my son on a whim looking for some exceptional Mexican food, which definitely exists within Utah. First off this is not authentic Mexican, it is Tex-Mex or americanized. Inside the ambience is nice, kind of a Chili's style but with southwest touches. It is big, good for large parties, they even have specific rooms for large parties. It's in the area of Ogden near the Megaplex that has been redone into a walking outdoor mall. Chips which was mentioned are whole tortas which you break off but the quality of these and the salsa are nothing special. They probably buy this stuff in bulk. The Habanero salsa was much better. Our server was excellent very helpful, honest and friendly. The food was average, fresh enough, but it didn't feel like all sauces are made from scratch. They do cater to Vegans which is good. I had the Arroz con Pollo, it was too saucy for me and this sauce was not distinct. My son loves chimichangas, he was ok with this one. It was good enough, but not exceptional. I would go back and try more though. The distinct bar area has a nice selection of beers and $5 for a 20oz is becoming a rare find. Good service and ambiance make this a nice find. read more

Stopped here when traveling and so glad we did. It's off the highway a bit, but the area was full of things to do so a great place to stop. We came for the vegan options and they were excellent. Staff was friendly. Plenty of space inside and you didn't feel too close to others. We ordered way too much food. If you want more chips/salsa they tell you upfront it costs but then she didn't even charge for it and we actually had so much left over we took it to go. Our meals had so much flavor. So thrilled when we find vegan food when traveling. Highly recommend this place. read more

Ogden, UT We celebrated my daughters Birthday here (her favorite place) on Monday October 17, 2022 the first day Opening after being closed down for renovations. It was such a disappointment!! We were handed new smaller menus and told they are now charging for chips and salsa and reason was it's the most wasted item they throw out. Anthony our waiter said they're only $1.00 (the bill charged $3.95) Ordering has changed and almost a la Carte. No more combination plates! I ordered my favorite chili rellano which is a single now and comes on a small plate and had to order coconut rice and refried beans on the side. The rice was barely warm and chewy and beans were cold like a pile from a can. Not the normal cooked and creamy refried beans spread across the plate. My husband eats a lot and disappointed his carne asada burrito wasn't in the combo he usually gets. It came as just a single burrito on the plate..not like a Mexican dinner would be. Rice and beans should ALWAYS be included. My granddaughters order was just rice and beans. Again her beans were a pile of refried beans that looked uncooked from a can. She had to spread them out on her plate to eat them. The Birthday girl was sent the wrong item of Arroz Con Pollo put over red rice which she ordered coconut rice. The rice was hardly any like a couple tablespoons. She complained to the server and asked if she wanted a side of coconut rice which she declined because the red rice was already mixed in her meal. This experience was the worst we've ever had eating out. Even the beers were out of most popular brands. Changed to new plates which are a different size. A lot smaller. And using bowls for some Entrees to make it look like your getting more. It was just a horrible dine out celebrated experience ! We felt so bad for bringing our daughter here to celebrate her special day. And the service was just horrible. We were left forever to wait for our food and in the end our bill. Our reservation (4 adults/1 child) for 5:00 and didn't get out tip 7:30. We did end up talking with the manager and she discussed the nightmare of a day they had with mishaps. She ended up crediting our entrees and gave the Birthday girl a nice custard cause she felt bad. She was going to text us the new bill after Entrees removed but never received. We still ended up paying $90 for 6 drinks and 2 orders chips/salsa and 1 order of guacamole. We all left with a feeling of not being full... read more

I really enjoyed the food here! Recently moved from California to Utah and have been craving Mexican food. This was the best so far. Utahns have the most bland palates. Blessedly, Sonora Grill understands that Mexican food should be the complete opposite! The whole family enjoyed our meal. Service was prompt, pricing was fair. Will definitely be back! read more

Guacamole had no seasoning the carnitas was ok. Living in AZ for 35 makes this a disappointment lacking herbs and flavors sala verde was good chips are large tostadas warmed the corn tortillas come wrapped on parchment paper and tossed on the metal table so they are cold after the first one. Who thought that one through? It's ok place not one I'd go out of my way for. read more

I don't know why this restaurant doesn't get straight up 5 stars because our experience was incredible. From the moment we walked in, the service was excellent. Our waiter (sorry didn't get his name, beard, tall, dark hair, if this helps), was so informative and patient, he answered all our questions. There were four of us, and we had the Chili Verde burrito, the Carne Asada burrito, the large Carne Asada plate and the Chicken Flautas. They were all delicious, well prepared and large quantities (we took half our burritos home and ate them the next night, still good). We asked about their drinks and our waiter gave us lots of information on the way they were made and which ones people favored most (the Mojito Lime Rickey was everyone's favorite.) Prices were very reasonable. We all agree that this was one of the best meals we had on our trip, and wished it were closer to home because we loved it! read more

Went here for a "good meal" while on tour and spent $160 for the worst food poisoning of my life. DO NOT EAT HERE. Had to go to urgent care for fluids and anti nausea medicine and have a mobile drip nurse come to the hotel we were staying at. Had to book another night at the hotel cuz i was too sick to move. Ruined our travel logistics and plans. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This $20 plate of food cost me an additional $500 in reparations. Also the margarita was garbage. read more

Sonora Grill has great staff. So nice and accommodating. Willing to get what you need and knows their menu. Food is clean and not greasy. Meats are not my favorite. Meat is either over cooked or dry. It's not as juicy. I do like their coconut rice and their dips. Their dips are on point. Love their guacamole because it has enough lime juice and right amount of salt. I love their salsa. You can taste roasted tomato in their salsa which makes it super delicious. Not spicy but a more mild. The only thing about their green salsa is a little acidic. Maybe tone it down on the lemon or lime juice. Not sure if there's vinegar in it but it was a bit too acidic than most green salsas I've had. Overall a comfort place that is safe enough to go and enjoy. read more

We have been coming here for years. The food was excellent and the portions filling. We know life has changed, but portions are small, the chips were crumbs and I had to pay for them, and we had to wait so long I offered to bus the table myself so we could get seated 20 minutes sooner ( the entire wait was 45 minutes on a Tuesday evening). We were celebrating 2 birthdays and no response from the staff. I've heard the know what their doing, but for my family and several other local large families, we will be looking elsewhere for quality Mexican food. read more

Interesting place, more like an Americanized Mexican place. The chips were all huge torta chips. Salsa was a little bland , but the service was amazing. Lots of local beers on tap. Went here with friends recently for my first time. The menu was much different than I expected and it is not your typical Mexican restaurant. The prices seem a little high for what you get, especially the drinks. The drinks cost more than the entree. Disappointed with the food, it just wasn't my favorite. I don't know if it was what I ordered but my friends all felt similarly about their experience. Apparently the food here used to be better than it is currently & there were also different/better menu options. Service was good and we still had a good time. read more

We used to love this place. But the quality has seriously gone down hill! We went in tonight and the food was bland. I got a grilled Chicken quesadilla, not an app, but an actual "meal" and it came with nothing. I had to pay extra for salsa. No more free chips and salsa either. They could at least give 1 free basket! From when we started coming her to know it has really gone down in quality! read more

$13.00 order of guacamole and it doesn't come with chips? Have had their food before and it's good. But that's bullshit.

Charging for chips and salsa; rice and beans are an up-charge add-on...pathetic. It's our last time here. My wife says it's been a while, so obviously they're not going to miss my business. The chips used to be good, now they're obviously from a bag. The food is ok, but pretty soon they'll start charging per ice cube. They tried this a few years ago. It's like they think we should patronize them cause they're local in spite of the gimmicks. Nope. read more

Absolutely the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Service was terrible. If I could give 0 stars I would.

First off I want to say I LOVE this place. It would have been 5 s, BUT... I live in Orlando and was here visiting my family. Sonora Grill is one of my all time favorite places and I've been several times...all because of the Arroz Con Pollo! Now to the BUT... My mom brought me to lunch for my Birthday. I of course got the Arroz Con Pollo and my Mom got the Crispy Avocado Tacos. Since it was a vegetarian meal the server asked if she wanted cheese. She asked the server if they charged for cheese and she said no. Mom loves cheese so she said yes to cheese! The meal came with no cheese (the photo will show this). It wasn't a big deal though so she ate it without mentioning to the server. Both meals were great regardless. The issue came when we got the bill. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, they are only using their online menu right now. The Crispy Avocado Tacos are listed are $12.95 but our bill showed $13.95. We notified the server and she went to go fix it. The manager came over and explained to us that it was a $1 more because of the cheese. I explained to him that we had asked the server and she said it was free. I also said that online there is no charge for cheese and the photo of the meal shows cheese. He argued with me back and forth for a bit and said when ordering online, the $1 cheese fee won't show up until the end of the ordering process. I then went to the end of the online process and still no charge for cheese. Even though I showed him this he still argued with me and mentioned a few times that he just wanted to make sure we knew in the future that there is a charge for cheese. It such a stupid conversation that should have never taken place really... I do love this place but to have a manager act like this is a shame. Either the price online is incorrect or your POS is incorrect. Fix it, and don't disrespect your customers! Unfortunately I'll think twice before going back. :-/ UPDATE: Apparently the manager that was arguing with me is the owner? That makes this much worse. He mentioned in his response to my review that you can see shredded cheese on the tacos. I'll accept that may be the case and apologize however there is NOT cheese on the beans and the beans appear to be different than what is on their published photo. And you are correct, we came to the restaurant with a few different coupons. One was a coupon that was emailed to me for my birthday which was valued at $14.95. The second one was for free Elote for booking a reservation online. We also had a buy one entree get one free. We explained everything to the server to make sure we were doing things correctly. She confirmed that we would get the Complimentary Elote and the complimentary Birthday Entree but couldn't use the other coupon. That was totally understandable and we didn't argue. The owner/manager was not apart of this conversation at all so not sure why he is saying he denied this. Please also note on the new photo attached they have now updated their menu to now say that cheese is $1 extra. They have obviously realized their mistake and have fixed it. The additional charge was NOT previously listed prior to my original review. What a shame that the owner would try to retaliate by trying to make me look like the bad guy in his reply. Because of this I bring my review down to one star. All he had to do was apologize for the mistake instead of trying to blame it on a customer that has been loyal to his business for years. read more

Ok look. I. Love. Sonora. When I walked in for the first time I thought "oh no...this is Mexican food for white people" and it kinda is. But it's really good. Really. Sometimes you want Mexican inspired food but something fancier -- that's when you want Sonora. The food is filling and portions are generous but you won't be left feeling heavy afterwards. I'm guessing that when you arrive at the gates of heaven you'll be greeted by St. Peter, Mother Teresa, your favorite dog, and Walter Mathhau. (He was Buttermaker in the Bad News Bears for crying out loud!) But if you've been an especially good little boy or girl you'll also be greeted with the Chili Rellano from Sonora Grill. That's right, I said it, you get to heaven, you meet your creator and when he offers you your first literal taste of heaven, it's two incredible poblano peppers, stuffed with cheese, battered, fried and drizzled with sour cream and avocado cream sauce. "But Chris, I don't like poblano chilis, how can this be possible?" My answer to you is the Sonora Grill Chili Rellano is the wonderful you never knew you needed in your life. Trust me, go to Sonora Grill right now, order the Chil Rellano and partake of its gooey glory. When you're done with that return again and again. If you want to mix it up, holy smokes the Cochinita Pibil will give you what their logo promises, "You've never had Mexican like this before." The Cochinita is slow roasted pork that is out of this world and the pickled onions are on point. There are a myriad of other options to choose from but if you have only one chance to eat at Sonora (I feel terrible for you and your life decisions) please partake of the Chili Relleno and bask in its sublime savor. read more
