    BBQ Sampler
    Albert T.

We don't normally eat at large chains like Sonny's BBQ - I'd much rather support small businesses and local shops, but the choices were lacking given that it was two days before Christmas and we were traveling. I'm thankful at least Sonny's was open. It actually did seem decently promising since it seemed like they mainly specialize in pork, which is my favorite to get in any BBQ establishment given my NC origins. There weren't too many customers on this day; the restaurant was perhaps 1/4 full, so we got seated immediately and placed our order. Service was generally very friendly and quick. BBQ Pork Egg Rolls ($8.69) - The eggroll crust was fried well and crunchy. The interior was a bit of a soggy mess. The cole slaw was mixed inconsistently into the pork, rendering some parts soggy, but some parts drier. The seasoning in the interior needed some work - I was glad they had the side of Ranch because this desperately needed to be dipped. BBQ Sampler ($15.99) - This came with three ribs, a bit of pulled pork, three wings (choice of Alabama White or Florida Citrus), a choice of cornbread or garlic bread, and two sides. I went with the Alabama White, cornbread, coleslaw, and the BBQ dirty rice. The ribs were smoked decently, and dusted with cajun seasoning. The meat was very tender and fell off the bone well, but somewhat dry and required BBQ sauce to liven it up. For some reason the restaurant leaves the pleural membrane on the ribs, which leaves a chewy, almost plastic-like layer on the bottom of the rib. Most places take this membrane off as it interferes with the seasoning, so it's kind of strange to see Sonny's leave it on. The wings had very tough and rubbery skins, as if the pitmaster had cooked these on far too low heat so the fat wasn't able to render out. There were no brown or crunchy bits on the skin or any sign that high heat had been applied to them. The interior meat was also quite dry. I haven't had white BBQ sauce before so I can't comment on that other than to say it did complement the wings well. The pork was more South Carolina-style, with a mustard vinegar sauce on top. It seemed like it was only pork butt, with some fattier and some leaner bits. Even though Sonny's claims to smoke these in house, for some reason the pork was quite mushy, as if it were steamed or boiled for some time. It was very disappointing and it's quite sad that I actually prefer grocery store pre-made pulled pork over this... The cornbread was served as a corn muffin. It was standard American BBQ/Steak chain style cornbread. Basically super sweet like a dessert. Still, this had a nice crust on top from all the sugar, was studded with actual corn kernels on the interior, and was generally pleasant to eat. The coleslaw was pretty standard industrial coleslaw. A bit frothy and watery with cabbage and vegetables chopped very finely. Finally, the BBQ dirty rice was cooked with way too much water and was very mushy. It had a good amount of corn kernels mixed in and some chopped up sausage as well. Strangely, the sausage had a distinct lack of saltiness and flavor, as if it had been boiled and all the flavor had leached out. Sonny's has 4 types of BBQ sauce on the table: Original, Sweet, Sizzling, and Smokin. They use the same sweet tomato sauce base for all four types and then add some additional herbs and spices. The main base flavors are very similar between the sauces. The differences aren't big enough if you like variety. Everything was way worse than I expected for a large chain. Given the relatively high ratings for Sonny's, I wonder if we just caught them on a bad day? Perhaps they had staffing issues (since it was two days before Christmas after all) and/or were serving leftover food instead of freshly cooked items? I'm not sure the reason, but I wouldn't eat here again.

Sonny's excuse for banana pudding! Its half empty, no waffers or cool whip.

the food was not hot! the meat was crammed in 1 box. my meal was 98.00 and the containers were not full and the banana pudding was 1/3 empty,no cookies or cool whip and they left it out of our bags. i had to check my bags then ask for the pudding, then wait 10 minutes for it. the okra was ordered crunchie but was given half cooked. your waitress refused to bring it curbside because i had not added my tip but said it was because i ordered on line which i didnt order on line i had used your app instead. so i can only assume it's because i had not tipped yet! she lost a tip i pay that in cash usually. i went to drive through at that point. why have an app if they dont want to work! maybe if night shift would stop their smoking in the lot at their cars they could work! night shift is lazy!

There was a wait with it being Father's Day. However we decided to sit at the bar and were seated immediately. The food was so good. We ate it ALL! We didn't wait to take a pic.

The Fourth of July and a vacation brought us to this area. And of course, we searched Yelp for restaurants with good ratings. It turns out Sonny's was a good choice. We got lucky and arrived before the church crowd. When we left, there were quite a few people waiting for tables. The menu is extensive so I had difficulty choosing my meal. Hubby had difficulty too so he went with a sampler plate. I chose the pulled pork sandwich which was large and tasty. Of the meats on the sampler plate, hubby's least favorite was the beef brisket (which we are big fans). He really enjoyed the ribs, chicken, baked beans and coleslaw. I tried both the baked beans and slaw and have to agree they both were very tasty!!! And the cornbread was definitely a good way to end the meal. If you were in this area or near another Sonny's, I suggest giving it a try. We would again!

It set the stage perfectly for what was to come. Our host was quick and helpful, immediately bringing us big cups of water, which was a nice touch. I ordered the prime rib sandwich and was impressed by its tenderness, pairing it with crispy onion rings. Nicole and our little one shared the mixed platter, which came with two ribs, two pieces of chicken (choice of dark or light), and pulled pork, plus sides of beans and mac & cheese. Everything was flavorful and satisfying. Even Floyd and Casey got to enjoy some scraps, which they happily devoured. Dessert was a highlight: two cinnamon apple bread pudding cakes with whipped cream. Rich, sweet, and indulgent -- we left feeling full enough to skip dinner and ready for a nap. The only drawback was the grease factor. Toast was overly buttered, and overall the food leaned heavy, so be prepared to grab plenty of napkins. While the flavors were excellent, the richness sometimes felt a bit overwhelming. Sonny's BBQ delivers hearty portions, smoky flavor, and a welcoming atmosphere with attentive service. It's a great stop for comfort food on the road, though a touch less grease would make it perfect.
