Honestly- the slowest drive thru... even when youre the only one in it. Routinely will sit at the speaker box for 5 minutes without being acknowledged. Whether the place is packed or empty. Whether youre getting food or a drink..be prepared to wait. Theyre slower than the Habit or In N Out and those restaurants are actually busy. I was sad to hear that A&W closed its doors here in Atascadero. Sooo I guess Sonics is taking its place. The only hot dog/burger chain we have in town like this is wiener-schnitzel. I had the coney foot long w/onions. Got a side of jalapeño poppers & some mozzarella sticks with a strawberry cheesecake shake. All was good and hot, kids also liked their burgers & fries. One of the worst designed Sonics I have visited. Only 4 drive up stalls which is blocked by drive thru traffic. 90 percent of the parking spots are also blocked by the drive thru traffic. You can't order from the patio so you will have to walk inside to order. I had to repeat my name twice and the lady still had to come out from the back to get my name. Sonic needs to step up to the future and have a kiosk like McD's! Food came out after about 6 minutes from ordering and only one mess up on a drink. Food tasted like Sonic so no knock on that or the customer service. But it was not worth the $45 for 2 combos and a kids meal. First the food is what you should expect from a sonic. It was good and the service was friendly and prompt. It is what it is supposed to be. It was a bummer the drive up stalls were closed but I can see why as the parking lot and drive thru is a terrible design for when it's busy. Dining area seems to get neglected as most fast food places seem not to care about clean tables or floors. I was the only person inside and maybe 5 people drove thru the drive thru and not one clean table to sit at. It was weird to have the kiosk ask for a tip when paying. Finally found time to stop by and try out the newest location of Sonic - definitely visit on a week day since weekends tend to be a little hectic and the line could stretch out to the main road. I've gone to Sonic in Hayward & Gilroy before and was excited to have a nice little chicken sandwich, tater tots & my favorite Ocean Water. The staff was super kind and were great at handling such a long line in the drive thru. My boyfriend had also ordered popcorn chicken & mozzarella sticks. OKAY THE FOOD: The chicken sandwich was great, considering we didn't wait long to order & receive our food. The ocean water (and ice nuggets) was amazing as always. The mozzarella sticks were alright, they didn't have the best cheese pull but was crispy and flavorful. The tater tots were SO CRISPY, and the popcorn chicken was a great snack! True, they're in their opening days, but something they absolutely NEED to do, that they have NOT done, is display a sign showing all menu items BEFORE you get to the ordering kiosk. That way you don't tie up the line behind you trying to decide what it is you want once you FINALLY get there. Knowing in advance what the menu items are would go a LONG way in helping the line to move along more quickly. But being stuck in line for over an hour after having been only about the 20th car back was simply inexcusable, and would've proven to be no issue at all at In n' Out. Okay, but what about the food itself? Worth the wait? Got two of their butter garlic burgers, and honestly wish I could say they tasted as good as they sounded, but alas, no. We have a great experience each time we order. The crew at the drive thru window are always friendly, fun and helpful! We usually order chocolate cokes. Sometimes they are confused by our order, since I am sure not that many customers order this drink. But they make it right each time. Occasionally we order a burger and fries. Very good also. Located off the San Anselmo exit, on San Palo Rd, is Sonic. It was the old KFC. I'll give it to people that the parking lot is a little tight, compared to a lot of sonics, but no more than other fast food places. We went through the drive through and had 3 people ahead of us and only had to wait 10 mins total. The gentleman at the window was very welcoming and delivered awesome customer service. I ordered the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Combo, Lg Fry, Lg Onion Rings, Lg Coke, Med Reese's Blast. First, the Chicken Sandwich was better than BK, McD's, Wendy's or Carls Jr. My picture shows it was an actual breast and not highly processed. The brioche bun had a sweetness. I like how the lettuce and onion make a nice earthy, sweetness, bed for the chicken. The fries were salty, crispy, and yet, soft in the middle, good. Love how they do the ice in Soda's. The onion rings were a little soft, but I loved the flavor and grit. The Blast was bomb. Sonics used to use more of a fake ice cream 10 years ago, now it's more real. It was a 5/5 fast food experience, but 4/5 overall. The Chicken Sandwich was small and the Onion Rings should've been Crunchier. *Overall, great experience. People need to chill. He was super friendly and informative about the menu, as it was my first time. Ordered the popcorn chicken, groovy fries and a Diet Cherry Limeade. The popcorn chicken was decent as were the fries. Not a ton of flavor but not bad either. The ranch had a good taste to it and the groovy sauce that came with the fries had a fun flavor. I am not the person to write a review for fast food, I feel everyone pretty much knows what to expect from the big chains. However this is the first Sonic on the central coast AND was by far the worst service I've received at a fast food chain. We came up to Atascadero for the annual cruise night and anticipated a big wait due to the event. We placied an order online as we passed SLO and when we saw it was 45 mins out we felt like we made the right decision to order ahead. When we arrived, the restaurant was dead. Only a few groups in the drive thru and inside. The outside menus speaker was so low that we chose to go in to talk with someone about our order. Once we were able to track someone down they couldn't find our order and at this point we were only 7 minutes early. After using the disgusting bathrooms we were made aware that they found the order and would start to work on it. By the time the order was brought to us it was 20 mins past our pick up time and multiple items were wrong so we continued to wait for the corrections. The only redeeming part of this was that the employee working with us realized how badly they messed up and he tried to fix things. We were sent a request for feedback and gave them all the same information. No one reached out and my assumption is they know they'd go bankrupt if they had to shell out the money to fix everyone's bad experiences. The food was terrible and I wish we had gone across the street to get in n out. It would have been a million times better, cheaper and way faster. We will never come back and I tell everyone it's not worth trying even if you've never had it before. Save your money! read more

I was on my way down to la today and me and the trap queens wanted to get some breakfast so we decided to stop by sonic. The service was good but the food was utterly disgusting. We tried to order bagels and the man at the counter said "i don't cary those here" but they were on the menu in front of my face. Instead, he gave me a soggy burger bun, white plastic repulsive cheese, and the meat was undercooked. The food was so bad that we couldn't finish it. It smelt and tasted like cardboard! New Sonic Drive-in in Atascadero. I've only been to a few Sonic's in the past and the food was ok and basically what you would expect. This specific location is new and has only been open for a couple months. I have been wanting to go here from when I first heard they were coming. First item was parking, poorly designed and without thought of impact of line for the drive through. We went inside to order. To our surprise there wasn't any register or counter person. Just a big menu with a red button to start your order. Confusing to myself and the 3 other customers in line. Also no way to pay with cash, only card. We ordered a regular chili cheese coney hot dog, small banana shake, 3 piece chicken tenders combo with medium coke and groovy fries, and ched-r-peppers. When paying for our order I was offended to see a prompt for tip !!! For what !?!?! No personal contact and no tables that are clean. The chili cheese coney hotdog was okay, hotdog was small and skinny, chili had a typical canned taste. The banana shake was basic vanilla soft serve with a banana chemically tasting syrup. It was horrible and that's being nice. Chicken tenders were okay, a little bland and dry but the buffalo sauce made it a little better. The medium coke was just coke, so no real way to mess up, but it was crammed full of ice with little amount of coke. There wasn't any way to get a refill as the coke machine is in the back so no access to refills and no counter person to ask for a refill. The groovy fries were a potato like processed substance formed into a crinkle cut shape that lacked flavor and texture you want in a french fry. The ched-r-peppers are actually better than anything else we had and yet they're better at Jack-in-the-Box. I really wanted to like this place but even giving them a pass on being a new location with new staff it just doesn't make any sense to return for what is more about poor planning and below average food quality. The one person who I did see seemed nice. With all this, there's an In-N-Out Burger across the street with consistently fresh quality ingredients and actual customer service with a person in front of you, smiling and ready to take your order. Zero stars for continuously terrible customer service. On multiple instances, it has seemed that staff would rather argue with customers. They get things wrong when ordering despite customer trying to get clarification, have overcharged and when asked to correct mistake have tried to keep excess money charged. They somehow expect customers to know about their different process despite being instructed differently in-app. Wanted to give them one more shot, but this last experience marked the end for us. Food is greasy, sloppily made, and there were even outdoor umbrellas sitting on the counter where food is brought out.
