Our trip to Central California continues... The whole reason we came up here was to see Los Lonely Boys and Los Lobos at the Vina Robles Amphitheatre. At this point my wife has little to no confidence I can choose a good place to eat after a dismal lunch in Nipomo and an even worse dinner in Cambria yesterday. We made our way to Paso Robles seeking lunch. Primal House looked good and had the endorsement of my Yelp friend Randy B. who seems to be the number one Yelp Guru in the area. He was right and this place was really good. Woo Hoo! I got one of their craft beers, "Old Blue" small-batch pilsner. It was great. Our waitress was awesome. WOW. We were looking for dinner, and the Concierge at the Just In suggested Primal House. If you aren't a local, this is a combination butcher shop, cheese shop, brewery and restaurant, all in one. Farm to table, they raise the cattle they serve. We had a pianist playing for dinner, and she was quite good. As to the food, my wife decided to order their BLTA which was bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado for her dinner. It came with a dish of cole slaw, which was emboldened with some jalepeno - very nice! She said the bacon was very tasty and good on the sandwich. I ordered their filet mignon with a side of their smashed potatoes, which were covered with cheese and bacon chunks. The filet was served with a green chimichurra sauce and a combination of sour creme and horseradish. I went all in on the sour creme and horseradish sauce - it was delightful. The steak was cooked to order. The bathrooms were clean. The service was very strong. The abiance her is butchershop/restaurant/brewery. The back bar was set up nicely - they had a variety of alcohol and non-alcohol drinks. Kid friendly (keep them out of the brewery) and just a nice place to visit! How have I never heard how great Primal House is? While searching for a new lunch place near Tin City, I came upon some glowing Yelp reviews. I've seen the Primal House sign while driving down the hwy. a ton of times but never questioned what it was. First of all, if you're going there to eat, it's a regular restaurant. I thought that being a butcher shop as well that you'd order at the counter and then seat yourselves. Quite the opposite. Though it's not a full bar (beer and wine only, but a great selection) we sat at the bar. I had the smash burger and hubby had the club. Massive serving. I am so glad I got the single patty as it was totally more than enough. Great food. Nice ambiance. Service was impeccable. Fast forward a couple of weeks later and we stopped by to get some steaks to grill. Beef prices are high everywhere right now, but we got some amazing NY steaks that turned out great on the grill. The butcher shop area has a great selection of produce, bread, pre-made meals, local food products and of course, a very good variety of proteins. It feels good to shop and support local businesses. What a great place! From the outside, you wouldn't be able to tell how big it is inside. It has a butcher shop, part market, casual eatery, brewery and fine dining. A group of us girls came in for brunch/lunch over the weekend and enjoyed the food, the decor, the layout, the dining room with the brick wall and the hanging lights were just pretty and added to ambience of this restaurant/store. I had the avocado toast on wheatberry bread which was quite delicious. Melanie was our server, she was great and knowledgeable of the menu. I had my share of mediocre burgers in the past. You know the kind where it's hit or miss, or the kind where the first bite is usually just a mouth full of raw onions?! Yeah well, this is definitely not the case here at Primal House. First time visit here, which we stumbled upon just by driving around and exploring. Now this place will definitely be a "must" whenever we come back into town. Ordered the Primal Burger, which in my humble opinion is second to none and probably one of the best I've had thus far! 4oz (x2) of the freshest, most succulent, meat-forward tasting, and perfectly cooked beef (medium rare) you could ever imagine! WOW, just wow! Superb service the day we came and we were also humbled to have met Chef Marcel who just happened to come out to the dining area to say hello. That speaks volumes in my book. My daughter took me here yesterday for Father's Day. I must say that we were extremely surprised by the wonderful facility, professional staff and all around fun ambience of the place. It's a combination butcher shop, bakery, craft brewing company and eatery. So fun. Great selection of food, wine and beers. They even make their own sodas from scratch. Everything is locally source or made in house. The owners family are ranchers and they harvest their beef weekly from the family farm. Fantastic place. It's a must stop while you're in town visiting or for locals. They're pet friendly on the patio and we were greeted with music from a local duo. Can't say enough about this place. I just had to write an update to my already 5.0 star review of Primal House, for which, I only had tried their brews. A few days ago, I tried some of their food, and specifically, some of their meat. Simply, and to the point, wow. Sausage sampler. 2 grilled sausages, sliced, both were amazing but tasted nearly, if not, the same. Quality and flavor couldn't be finer. Served with a small pretzel. Loved. Primal burger. 2 x 4 oz patties, and its one of the best burgers I've had in a long while. On a smaller than usually bun, it was stacked high...and so so good. Great flavor, great grind, perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked. Loved. Along with the great beer they serve on a rotating menu, I need to come back to try a ribeye, a BBQ beef sandwich, cowboy beef nachos, and a reuben. read more

This is a terrific addition to our burgeoning foodie landscape up in the north county. They have a wide variety of meats and supporting products on hand. I recently bought a frozen duck breast that was locally produced and just delicious. Also reasonably priced. Some of their offerings are expensive but I have found that our local butcher scene really delivers astoundingly good results - I would rather eat less meat that's more humanely raised and the flavor of which is off the charts than eat cheap meat often. It's worth it, in this chef's opinion. (Sinton &Sons is also great.) Our dine in expérience could've been better - we asked for rare but got well done, etc etc. It's perhaps too much for one person to man the counter and also do waiter duty. We probably won't eat here very often but it's great for specialty shopping. read more

This restaurant is perfection! Food: we were craving meat so we got a giant ribeye to share and it hit the spot! The steak with cooked perfectly -medium rare. Meat was extremely tender and flavorful. They own their cattle range so the quality is exactly what you would expect. Drinks: We didn't try the drinks because we had our own wine. They did not charge a corkage fee. AND they opened our bottle for us and served it with a smile. Service: Perfect! All the 3 servers we came across were super friendly, welcoming, accommodating, and thoughtful. Had lunch at Primal House with a small group. The steaks were outstanding. The sides... garden salad, fresh asparagus, onion rings, and the smashed red potatoes were all delicious. The atmosphere was nice. On a Thursday, not many people in the restaurant. The meat counter stayed busy. We would definately return and eat there again. They also have a lot of usually/unusual food items for sale for purchase.... Dried beans, sauces, seasonings, pasta, pickles, etc. it was fun to walk around and look at the variety. We come to Paso Robles pretty regularly to pick up our wine club deliveries -- yes, we're those people -- and this spring trip we finally decided to give Primal House a shot. Made a reservation for seven, brought our own bottle of J Duci (obviously), and settled into the fine dining area, which was noticeably quieter and more relaxed than the bar scene. Great call. Now, we came in as wine people. But the beer? Genuinely blew us away. We did a flight just to be thorough, and my dad -- a man who loves his wine -- abandoned ship entirely and went straight for the black cherry dunkelweizen. How do I describe it? Imagine someone took a Dr Pepper, gave it a glow-up, and turned it into an actual craft beer. Bizarre. Wonderful. 10/10 would confuse my taste buds again. On the food: the artichoke dip had a nice little kick to it that snuck up on you in the best way. The pretzels and cheese sauce? We need to have a serious conversation about the pretzel-to-cheese-sauce ratio, because we ran out of pretzels long before we ran out of sauce. That's not a complaint -- that's a cry for help. Send more pretzels. Three of us went for the prime rib special and my husband got the ribeye with mushrooms. The salad that came with the prime rib was fresh and crisp, and the blue cheese dressing was legit. The prime rib itself was juicy, well-seasoned, and not overly fatty. Fair warning though -- it seemed like they roast it and then finish it on the grill, so getting a true medium-rare is probably off the table. Ours came out closer to medium, but it had this great steak-like texture that honestly worked. Would I order it again? Absolutely yes. The mashed potatoes that came with everything were also quietly excellent -- the kind of side dish you keep going back to without realizing it. They haven't officially opened yet but you can come in and get food, beer, homemade sodas, fresh produce, locally sourced meats, and a variety of locally sourced goods. Every staff member is welcoming and very friendly. If you have any questions, just ask. When you come in, it's open and parts remind you of an alley of a time back when. The ambiance is very welcoming and lively. We truly enjoyed the burger and classic Philly. Both good and came with chips. We ordered the fries as well which came with a yummy aioli. My son and I stopped in for dinner tonight and loved it! Our server Ciara was amazing, her recommendations were spot on, and the rest of the servers were so nice too (I think we talked to Troy?). There was live music which was fabulous. The house made root beer was so flavorful and complex, and my basil mocktail was herbal and fresh. We both ordered the burger which was truly mind blowing. The patty was huge and perfectly cooked medium. It was almost TOO juicy, but the bun perfectly kept the structure without being heavy. The local heirloom tomatoes and the peppered bacon added even more flavor. Legitimately some of the best burgers we've ever had! The fries were also perfectly cooked and flavored. First visit to this new popular place in Paso. Had heard so many great things. Our favorite group, the Neighborhood Katz were playing here, so we decided to go with a group of friends. Had some appetizers and some nice Pinot Noir. Our server was the best! She was very attentive and so nice, and they were very busy. Packed house which was nice to see for a new business. My husband and I decided to go for the $50 New York Strip. We were sharing it. This $50 steak comes with no sides. Sadly to say, this steak was just plain terrible. We should have sent it back. Really tough with no flavor, at all. We left most of it on the plate. Not even any sides to eat after realizing the steak was so bad. This steak definitely didn't come out of their fabulous meat market case! I rarely give anyone a rating below 4 stars, but this steak was that disappointing and definitely not worth the $50 we paid. Really enjoy this place. First of all, great vibe going in. Staff welcoming. Its a place for super high quality meats as the do inside on site butchering and source their local cattle with no weird hormone, antibiotic stuff. The have fun food condiments around the store front too, including fresh pies and even caviar from my favorite caviar source (also used by French Laundry). They are a brew house for a huge selection of freshly made beers for all style choices. They have a restaurant with great food offerings that would please anyone. They use super fresh ingredients and source their eggs from a local source which to me ranks them at a new level. I'm a water shop and enjoy that their house water is Culligan filtered water, not tap. And yes, they have music on two or three days.. Friday, Saturday afternoon for dinner and Sunday brunch. Service is great and locals love this place. It gets busy, so plan accordingly. BTW, Sunday music is very relaxing and fun, so even that day is busy. The only place I buy my meat! I have a gluten allergy & can't have anything processed. While I can't have their bacon with whatever seasoning they use they sell gluten free seasonings and bare bacon to make my own, the ground chicken turkey pork and beef make eating enjoyable again! When I walked inside I saw that there were two dining areas, neither of which looked very appealing. But I went ahead and chose to sit in the dining area near the bar. Unfortunately it was a cold night and the dining room was somewhat drafty. I ordered the French dip sandwich and the house root beer. Both were tasty but a bit on the small side. Had never heard of Primal House and my wife saw their sign on the way to Tin City. Maddie took care of us and service was exceptional. We had several staff members from Primal House check on us to ensure our visit met expectations. Food came out hot and fresh. We opted for the Mac and Cheese and Pretzels with cheese dipping sauce. Pretzels were nice and salty as you'd expect from a good pretzel. Mac and cheese noodles were cooked perfectly. The only thing missing was bacon. Will definitely ask them to add bacon next time. Was disappointed in myself for not getting a burger as the one we saw come out was amazing. We got the Amber Grog Ale and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I will definitely be coming here for the beer and service. Customer service is hard in today's world. Primal House was definitely invested in our experience which was nice. This is a 5 star review but really should be more. Primal House has been all over my social media feeds so decided to stop by and check the place out. First the place is super cute, it's clean and has many little areas selling different items. The young lady that helped me was so nice and she actually engaged in conversation. I purchased a rib eye and short ribs. I've only cooked the rib eye and immediately had to write a review. The steak was so tender, I cut it with a fork, I only seasoned with salt and pepper and that is all it needed. No steak sauce or other condiments. I will definitely go back and purchase more meat. The meat market has an excellent collection of premium cuts and the wine and beer list covers a decent selection. We enjoyed eating on the patio as the dining area was crowded and the live music made it a bit louder than our conversation. The dining area was beautiful with low lighting, high back tables with barstools and a beautiful bar area. Our meal was simple perfection. There are currently not a lot of choices on the menu, but they got it right with a cheesesteak sandwich that is tender, juicy, and melts in your mouth. The burger likewise is perfect. We have eaten lunch here on many occasions since their opening. However, they have added steaks to the menu. Game changer! I just had the filet. The best filet I have had. Cooked to perfection. I like my steak plain, I got the chimichurri sauce on the side. Wow, delicious. We have also taken home meat from their meat counter, it has all been very good as well. I debated on whether or not to write this review because as a fellow chef, I hate yelp and all of its unsolicited advice from people who don't generally know what they're talking about. But, this was our 4th time in. And our first time in since apparently their entire kitchen staff quit. We were optimistic that hopefully it would still be just as good as before. Unfortunately this is not the case. I'm not going to pick apart why this meal was bad. We were served an inedible dish. We did not eat it. Server did not take it off our check. Manager #1 apologized (male with glasses) he seems genuinely concerned. Manager #2 (or owner or whoever she was.) continued to fight with me about why my meal was bad. Continued to tell me it was "the same" as before. Had major attitude when removing this from our check. We left upset and hungry. Im sorry, but you cannot act like this when you're running the front of house. THIS is the sole reason why we will never be coming back. I've worked in the restaurant industry for 20+ years, this is not how you handle a situation like this. If she had been understanding and kind, we would have gladly chalked this up to one bad meal.
