Very delicious oriental cuisine! I really cannot complain for an Asian Bistro in Jasper,Texas. However the only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is they used to have a full bar which they shut down. My opinion is due to staffing. However for this that would like to have a nice Malbec or Chardonnay with delicious oriental food..... well all you get is water, tea, or soda. Hmmmm that reminds me of my days of living in Waco, Texas. This place has huge potential if they would at least have a wine list. Liquor like mix drinks could be passed up, but why take away beer/wine from your past customers.....? read more

Very casual restaurant with super-friendly wait staff. The food is some of the best in Jasper, especially the sushi and fried rice.

My husband and I ate at Son Asian this evening. We had a full order of the crab dragons and we split the lemon chicken dinner. I had the painkiller cocktail pictured. The painkiller tasted so good but I don't think there was much alcohol content. The crab dragons were good. The lemon chicken dinner was average. The waitress was good. The only complaint we really had was that the napkins that our silverware was wrapped in smelled awful, they smelled like old cooking oil. Not a good vibe for our first time there can't even sit down and they already think we know the menu. We had a few good things the pork dumplings and wonton soup was great . The meals were AWFUL the generals chicken was just in a sauce no flavor at all the sweet and sour chicken was like chicken tenders cut into pieces with a jar sweet and sour which was awful . The fried rice is not fried at all was in a bowl and yellow just tasted like minute white rice and some yellow food coloring . Took one bite and was done . They had no hot mustard the waiter offered spicy mayo instead. Can't be an Asian Bistro and not know any Asian flavor or condiments offered . First and last time at this place . read more

If you are looking for authentic Asian cuisine, keep moving. I do not know what you were expecting to find in east Texas, but if you are looking for food that is cooked, is not unreasonably priced, and will hopefully fill you up, then this restaurant will meet your needs. Their plates vaguely resemble Asian dishes as imagined by way of the Eastex palate. Not a lot of spice and the flavors are a little off. The rice was very dry. I would emphatically not recommend the sushi. Some of my companions were disappointed at their lack of vegetarian options. The building is older and somewhat run down. The restroom is definitely run down. There is spacious seating available, and it seems very popular with the locals at lunchtime. All of that said, their single greatest asset is their staff. Their people were friendly, cheerful, and happy both to offer suggestions on the menu and to tolerate my colleagues' ridiculous requests for modifications to the basic menu. read more

I understand they have a connection to Chinese Kitchen in Jasper too, and honestly the food at Chines Kitchen tastes a LOT better than at SON, and it was a lot more affordable and the portions were way larger. read more

This was just bad. Started with a soggy, tough egg roll. Generals Chicken is supposed to be fried with batter and then a spicy sauce with it. This chicken had no batter, was not fried. It was soupy chicken in a no flavor broth with absolutely no spice. Kung pao chicken is supposed to have peanuts and other vegetables in a spicy sauce. There was no spice. The only vegetables were numerous bell peppers and some onion and the chicken were thin slices although it did have a flavor but it just was not spicy and it was not king pao chicken. I really hope this was just a bad day for the cook and anyone expecting authentic Hot and Sour Soup or tasty Asian food. This was my first experience here and it was my last. This has to have been the most bland food I have ever eaten. I have had Chinese food in small towns before but wow this was really lacking. I got the beef and broccoli special that comes with "fried rice". I use quotes because it was basically white rice colored orange with something. Nothing else added. To me fried rice has a few veggies and egg in the mix. Overall very very bland. Makes me glad i avoided the sushi. On the upside and the only thing that made this more than a one star review is the service. I was greeted kindly and served well through my entire meal. I am honesty shocked at how many 4 & 5 star reviews this place gets. I tried it a few years ago and was very disappointed but because they always have a crowd I thought I'd try it again and give them a chance. I don't think I've ever given this bad of a review but their food just isn't good, at all. It's bland, thin tasteless sauces, frozen vegetables and canned slimy mushrooms. Even the fried rice is bad. I ordered Beef Broccoli, Hunan Pork, Shrimp Fried Rice and Egg-drop Soup. None of it was eatable, not even the soup. We ate here on a whim while traveling back to Tyler. We enjoy eating Vietnamese food and wanted to give this place a try. We ordered spring rolls as an appetizer and my girls ate them up. For our meals, we ordered pho and grilled pork. My kids loved their food and I enjoyed mine. Service was great too.
