The front-of-house staff were friendly and welcoming. We were seated in the back wing during a busy lunch crowd, which didn't bother us at all. The issue was that after our drinks arrived, our server seemed to disappear. As the crowd thinned, we found ourselves waiting for refills and attention. The buffet has all the classics--beef tips, chicken pot pie, fried catfish, chicken-fried pork loin, baked chicken, vegetables, and plenty of sides. It's filling and abundant, but it's a true country buffet experience: hearty, salty, and rich rather than refined. Cedar Tree clearly has a loyal following, and the full dining room shows that many folks enjoy what they offer. A little more consistency in service would make the experience even better.

Sometimes you need to get out of Houston and its Suburbs to score a fantastic meal…read more Today, 24Oct2026, my Wife and another couple we ride motorcycles with travelled one and a half hours north east to eat at Pickett House just west of Woodville Texas on US 190. Specifically, 157 Private Road 6000, Woodville Tx 75979. Todd, our riding buddy, found out about this during a solo ride from a retired firefighter while waiting for a road crew to open up a lane of traffic near Livingston, Tx. Today was the day we ventured to The Piney Woods for a spot of lunch. The place is slipped in behind a Museum/Gift Shop and does not open until 11am on the days of operation, usually F-Sun. Today, it was fried chicken with black-eyed peas, cole slaw, chicken and dumplings as well as cooked mustard greens. Dessert was peach cobbler with ice cream. The meal is served family style and everything is all you can eat. Seriously, all you can eat. The entry has a plaque (see picture of it) that is really what is expected of any and all diners that order there. I was our busser after the meal. After you get Inside look around and you will see is one of the biggest collection of Circus posters I have ever come across. Some of them are even up for adoption. But, I digress ... On to the food. The fried chicken was some of the best I have ever had. Crispy outer shell that has a distinct "crunch" on every bite. It is seasoned well and the chicken itself carries a flavor from whatever they marinaded it in. The thigh I started with was hot, juicy and tender as were the breast, leg and second thigh of my second plate. I thought I have had great fried chicken from one of the oldest bar in Oklahoma a decade or so ago ... this blows that out of the water. The sides were just as good. Those black-eyed peas were cooked to perfection and gave no aftertaste of the soil it was grown in so many of us that eat them know oh so well. Todd, who hates them ate two spoonfuls with no face making at all. The greens were tender and well seasoned with salt, bacon drippings and a hint of sugar to level out the bitterness of cooked greens. Even my Wife liked them. Cole slaw there is not sweet, so therefore I was the only one that liked that side. More for me. What really stood out on the sides was the chicken and dumplings. Normally, this is an entree. Not here. It was almost as exciting to eat as the fried chicken was. Chunks, not pieces, chunks of chicken were bathing in a cream sauce with tender dumplings that had just the right amount of flavor that carries the starch forward to greet your tastebuds. Afterwards, we all had our peach cobbler with a scoop of vanilla. The cobbler crust had some additional sugar on it that made the flakiness of the pastry even deeper in texture and flavor. Again, I have had cobblers before and this one rivals all of them. Our server was a mice young man that had a sharp sense of humor and verbally sparred with me about everything cluck. Even the nice lady collecting my dirty plates from the counter as I set them down chatted me up. Pickett House is a destination for us that do not live near it and is probably a mecca to those that do. This is going to be a return spot for my Wife and I if we are out there and it is open. Ciao, Darrell

One thing many people do not realize is that before Hurricane Katrina, I never had a New Orleans restaurant count the number of seafood items you would get in a platter. I'll save you any further reading: All in all, this is Spanish people's interpretation of French/Cajun/Creole goods. I just couldn't make myself order red beans & rice! Louisiana food is known for flavor. Let's not confuse flavor with spice. This food really had neither. The kitchen staff is Hispanic and 90% of the patrons that stopped through were of Hispanic origin. Not counting myself and my wife, that other 10% were older white folk. To a New Orleans' tongue, this place will disappoint. The staff is really friendly and attentive, so at least the service is good. The food is just average at best & really overpriced. I ordered the 3 items appetizer platter, and that was $19. The regular fish platter (5 pieces of fish with 2 hush puppies & fries) was about $11. My 3 fish, 3 shrimp & 3 chicken tenders platter was about $15 with the same fries and hush puppies. It was not much food, with not much flavor, with a pretty hefty price tag. All in all, if you need average food, stop here. I those to be disappointed trying to eat interpretive soul food (e.g. red beans and rice, gumbo, etc.). If you want cafeteria level spice for the elderly, this place will hit the mark. Great staff and average food with room to eat for about room for at least 40 people. Sadly it game out looking like a pitiful appetizer plate with 3-4 very small shrimp and the smallest tuftiest steak I've ever seen. We would have sent it back except we were with several other family members and did not want anyone to feel uncomfortable. By not complaining, the establishment did not have a chance to make it right. But I strongly feel that plate should have never left the kitchen, especially for the price they charged $$$$. Our total bill was well over $100 and no one left the table Happy with what they ordered. I truly hope they can improve their food items because Corrigan would support a nice family restaurant.
