Pretty empty on a Thursday night ~8:00pm, which was a fairly ominous sign right off the bat. I would've liked a more extensive drink menu considering the size and emphasis of the bar in the restaurant, but they had the standard beer variety for casual tapas place and a free mango martini for signing up for their club. My sangria tasted like the wine was a bit too overwhelming without enough of the fruity hints I was looking for. So overall the drinks were weak but not disastrous. Service very friendly, but also on the slow side considering the place was 75% empty, and there seems to be heavy employee turnover even for restaurant standards. For our party of 5, we had 4 small plates, along with a couple of the large entrees to share. Which was a very appropriate quantity of food, and each dish brought a positive twist especially the steak w/ Chimichurri (we asked for more just for the bread, it was that good). Only critique on the main cuisine would be that I would like to have had them brought to the table in waves instead of at once for the food to get cold. Also the dessert made my knees weak it was so good (tour of Spain highly recommended), definitely a great way to cap a nice meal with family. I totally agree with Danielle L. For years I stayed away from Solun because of the low Yelp ratings, but this is definitely not a 2.5 star place, it is a 4 star Tapas place and a find for Foodies. The food is consistent, creative and flavorful. The mojitos are always good with a smart wine list. Last night I went there for my fourth time in the last year and Solun continues to be a reliable choice. We had the Enslada Nevat which is always excellent and we tried the Quail tapa and a delicious tapa Mar y Tierra Crudo. My first quail experience may have made me a convert because it was perfectly cooked with a very yummy sauce. We also had the Lobster and Avocado salad which was fresh and full of lobster pieces. Overall, I have always had very fresh and well cooked seafood at Solun and this seems to be their strength. For service, I do not agree with low Yelp reviews. A casual, not-rushed tapas meal is consistent with Spanish culture. In Spain, they will not rush you or push to turn over the table. Instead, they let you relax with your friends and truly enjoy your night out. If you want a quick meal, this is not your place. I feel it is necessary to update my review based on recent experiences at Solun. I was a regular here, going several times per month for tapas and wine. First of all, the staff changes constantly- which is a problem, as you will be charged differently based on who serves you that day. The menu is also changing frequently- and the additions aren't great. The risottos can be described as bland, mushy white rice with minimal flavor. The seafood is never cooked consistently- the sea bass often comes out rubbery and dry. Even the fried foods are inconsistent, the calamari has also been served undercooked and soggy. The tapas are overpriced for the poor quality of the food and the drink prices consistently go up. While a happy hour is offered daily, the tapas will be half the size as they normally are for the discounted price, so beware if you are trying to get a full meal. I will be taking my business somewhere else, as it was convenient for me in the past but the recent changes to the menu and the staff haven't made it worth my time or my money (and it was a lot of time- as service is slow and unreliable). read more

A couple next to us at a wine dinner recently was from Woodbridge. Since we had a voucher for Solun, we asked if they had been there. They had and said it was just ok. If you want great tapas, they said, you should go to Ibiza in Hamden, which I can say is quite good. Since we did have that voucher and were in the area, we decided to try Solun anyway. There was a bit of a crowd at the bar and we were quickly seated by the friendly hostess. We sat in the dining area closer to the bar, which is nicely decorated with primary colors with black trim (kind of like Ibiza). Instead of plain tables, there are table cloths and a leather table cover. That's different, but it works. Before we get to the meal, a few quick things. I asked the waiter if he had any recommendations or any favorites. He said something like if you want to know what's good, just point to anything on the menu. I'm being picky, but I think the wait staff should be able to come up with some suggestions or diners' favorites instead of the 'everything is wonderful' line. After asking for bread, a saucer was filled with olive oil on the table and one small, cold slice of cracker-sized bread was dramatically served to each of us from a basket with tongs. The bread was actually fine, but it would have been much better warmed up. Plus, we had to ask for salt to put in the olive oil. Warm a bunch up, put it in a basket on the table with salt and skip the whole presentation thing. Our first tapas was a salad with frisee lettuce, white truffle oil, dried figs and cranberries, goat cheese, and a Parmesan crisp. It's very nicely presented and all the ingredients taste great together. The second tapas was grilled shrimp served atop a guacamole and sliced beets (a bit of a riff on one of my favorite Ibiza tapas). The shrimp was excellent and again all the ingredients came together nicely. So far, so good, but maybe we should have stuck with the tapas. Lamb chops were a special tonight and were ordered medium. Instead they arrived fairly well done. The waiter did offer a new serving, but we declined. To make matters worse, the mashed yucca and berry puree did not taste nearly as good as we imagined. Sea bass, however, was nicely presented and tasted fine. Based on our experience, I would recommend Solun for its tapas, which would rate four out out of five stars, instead of the entrees, which would probably rate about two stars. Service was helpful and very friendly and the bottled wine prices were quite reasonable. With the design and presentation of many of the tapas and other dishes, clearly there is talent in the kitchen. With a bit of tweaking, Solun could become a solid choice in the area. read more

Where to start. My friend and I ordered the daily drink special of half price martinis. My friend's was bitter. She sent it back. She ordered an appetizer and a meal. Our wonderful server put the orders in to be staggered. Less than 5 minutes of being served her app, my friend's dinner arrived. It went back to be heated (the kitchen's fault). Fast forward to the check. We had a $10 coupon. The manager (Christy) refused to honor it. The daily drink special is considered an "offer". The coupon cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. A daily drink special is not an offer. Buy 1 dinner and get one 1/2 off is an offer. I understand that coupons cannot be applied to alcohol. We ordered meals and an appetizer. The manager finally agreed to accept the coupon if we paid full drink price. We saved $4. Her attitude was off putting. She was unyielding. I will not return on principle. Good customer service would have been an offer of a free dessert, or a complimentary drink. Customer retention should be the goal, not souring a customer's experience further. P.S. I got an eggplant tapas to go. It was the size of my palm for $10. Absolutely wonderful dining experience! Moms had been raving about this place for a few months, so it seemed like the obvious choice for her birthday dinner on Saturday. Four of us rolled up right around dinner time and were seated immediately in the dining room closest to the bar. Service was attentive from the get-go: from Carlos (the owner) inviting us inside and welcoming us warmly, to Neil the multi-tasker, to Edwin (apparently mom's favorite waiter) to everyone in between, we were treated like very special customers. It turned out that mom loved this place so much she didn't even have to open the menu. We ordered a full gauntlet of tapas (albondigas, empanadas, potatoes & pork just to name a few) and every dish was better than the last. Our entrees, too, (two paellas: one seafood, one meat, lamb, and chicken) were delicious. To end the meal, we ordered dessert (tres leches cake and the fondue bites) which was the perfect end to our incredible meal. Everything was prepared and presented with care. Flavorful, satisfying, and just about anything you could want in a tapas experience. It's disappointing to hear other diners' experiences were not so stellar because as I said before, the service was out out of this world. So I will make this quick. Service - very slow, saw a waiter twice, took our order and gave us our bill. No option to reorder drinks. Was told at end of meal that service was slow because of a lack of staff. I would think you would tell your guests this in advance and let them have the choice of staying or not. Food - was just ok. Very expensive for the quality and quantity. Yes I know this is a tapas restaurant, but tapas should not be a small portion at the price of an entrée. It cost $80 for two people, for poor service and so-so food. This place is cute, and a good addition to the Woodbridge area. The tapas are very tasty. The vegetarian options (all that I can really comment on) were all very good - except for maybe the ravioli, which really doesn't seem to belong (maybe a butter or oil splash instead of the simple tomato sauce, just a suggestion). Many are made with local ingredients, and the bean dishes and grilled artichokes in particular are delicious! The service is very friendly, the owner is very accommodating and aware, which is nice, and the hostess has been very pleasant on each of our visits. Came here with a deal from Groupon, hadn't heard about this place till seeing it listed there. It's always nice picking a bunch of small plates to try so we were looking forward to going. We were greeted once we walked in and immediately seated. We were sat in what seemed like a smaller side room from the rest of the dining area which was a bit on the loud side (baby crying pretty much the entire dinner, boo) everything is wooden so noise traveled annoyingly well, it looked like they tried to prevent this with something along the bottom of the wall but it didn't work well. Mauricio was our server and introduced himself once we sat and took the time to explain the specials and the rest of the menu, the dishes he likes and could highly recommend. Very friendly and zero complaints at all, appreciated his great service ! Sangria came with our deal, we got a glass of red and white. I think the white was one of the best I've had and the red was very good as well. I can't remember exactly all the dishes we tried but the duck special was delicious and one of my favorites. Solid spot for Happy Hour, date night, or a nice family meal. It's located in an easily accessible area just off Rt. 15, with ample parking. The interior is bright and fun, with lots of color. The food was excellent - we particularly enjoyed the roasted artichoke tapas, and the tuna ceviche (I'm a sucker for a good ceviche, and this did not disappoint!). My rack of lamb entree was also cooked to perfection and accompanied by a very nice goat-cheese risotto. Wine selection was decent, and priced at very reasonable levels. We had dinner on a Thursday evening, and the place was busy, but the service was excellent - everyone is very attentive, from the hostess right through the chef himself. We made reservations on a Saturday night and then when we got there they sat us in the bar area. The bar area would have been fine other then the giant TVs playing, which made it feel more like a sports bar than a fine dining restaurant. Not exactly what you are looking for on a date night out. Out of the six tapas we ordered about half of them were pretty good. We enjoyed the crispy calamari salad. The lobster and avocado salad was more of lobster in guacamole which over powered the lobster. Don't ever go here. Ever. I am seven months pregnant and could only stomach two bites of my meal. I left starving because the food was so disgusting I couldn't eat it. I ordered carne asada and it was atrocious, the rice was clearly out of a microwave bag, and the beans were cold and most likely from a can. The room was hot and the service was terrible. Super watery with tons of beans is what we were served. CK Enchiladas were also sub par for $17. Server was nice but for the second time in a row visiting your place, we had to ask for utensils after our food was served. You need to revise prices down or enhance the food quality to keep locals like us loyal. You have a great location but we'll drive to west Haven just the same. FINALLY - A nice, upscale dining option close to Woodbridge, without having to drive all the way into New Haven. Solun was perfect for an after-work meetup; the tapas were delicious (highly recommend the calamari salad, mushroom ceviche, and octopus tapas dishes). The only dish I was not crazy about was one of the specials. There are ample choices of tapas, meaning really anyone can find something they like. The ambience was classy and relaxed. Most importantly, the staff were incredibly friendly and nice, which is often a really make-it-or-break-it factor after a long day at work. I have eaten here 3 times in the past 4 months. All 3 times have been for lunch on a weekday so I can't comment on what it's like in the evening as far as service. We were one of only 3 or 4 tables of people at lunchtime. The waiter (same guy all 3 times) is very attentive and helpful. There were only 2 tapas I wouldn't order again. One was the stuffed eggplant which was kind of swimming in a puddle of marinara sauce; the second was cheese ravioli (a special) that had the same problem. I reported these to the waiter and he laughed and said "yes, when we first started serving them, the only had a little sauce but people complained so we had to accommodate what everyone requested" ... sad, but true, I'm sure Notably good tapas: * Roasted artichokes * Charcuterie plate (cured meat and cheese plate) * Chorizo and wine * Beets and avocado * Brussel sprouts * Mushroom risotto Be sure to order from the full menu, not the lunch menu. Stopped in for a quick bite. Happy hour is 7 days a week, with discounted tapas and drafts. Sat at bar. Staff polite but not what I would call friendly. Area where I sat was not cleaned from whomever ate there last, another staffer did clean it for me. Got my draft, but there was dirt around the rim. Had to get new pour. Not sure if it was bad tap or poor dishwashing. Food was ok, what I would call "one off". Guacamole was good but no jalapeño or heat. Some chips were stale. First mussel was bad, rest were ok. Chorizo would have added more to them if crumbled or sliced instead of 1/2" squares. Sauce had coconut in I think a tomato base- better sauce would have been to either be a curry with the coconut or a traditional tomato base. Did not have a main dish so cannot comment on that. I must start by saying that I don't normally complain about much, however, when I am treated this way, I must let New Havener's know to beware. First we stumbled upon this establishment a few years ago, and we loved it. However, I purchased a Groupon for my husband and I as our 15 yr anniversary was approaching. We visited on Monday, August 26, 2019, only to be embarrassed on our special week of celebrating by the Manager Glorie (or Gloria, wearing a white polka dot blouse w/black pants, couldn't really catch her name). We sat down to have appetizers as we normally would, and had reservations for dinner afterwards in order to use our Groupon, which we have always done, with no complaints. Well this evening Glorie, the manager had a problem with this, she had a wait staff which was off duty come over and tell us that we could not use the Groupon, after having appetizers. She was not Woman enough to come and explain to the customers herself. When she finally came over the manager that is, this was to pick up the check, then she proceed to tell us that we can contact Groupon and have them extend the expiration date, because we could not use it that evening(does she really think that I am coming back to this place after being treated this way). As a manager, in my opinion you have the discretion to make your customers happy. She could have used the Groupon, and simply stated that it could not be used in the future in this manner, and we would have greatly appreciated that. However, she choose to ruin our anniversary dinner. We simply paid the bill, and went to another more welcoming establishment. People work too hard these days to go to a place and made to feel like dirt!! Mr. Carlos Hernandez, if you want you hard work to continue to be as nice as it was, you should beware of your manger, Glorie. She does not have your best interest at heart. Your customers make your business a success, and you treat them with respect. This Manager that you have, needs lessons on this procedure or she needs to go. I stumbled upon Solun Sunday afternoon. I ordered the crab cake special & the seafood lover guacamole to start with. I ordered the Paella Valenciana & my girlfriend ordered a steak flatbread. Plating & garnishes were a bit excessive but the food was truly delicious. The paella was one of the best I've had. The guacamole could've used a bit more freshly squeezed lime & the steak flatbread was a bit heavy on the gorgonzola. The service was great, I believe our server was Kristine but she was our bartender as well. She was great from the start & even brought us fresh utensils after every course with out us asking. Brunch was great! 6 girlfriends and I went to Solun for brunch this past Sunday. We were 1 of 3 tables between 11-2 pm and I felt bad for the staff! Nonetheless, our waitress was so sweet and very attentive. Bottomless mimosas and bellinis are an option for $14 and their Bloody Mary was loaded with treats (and very good)! Went for the first time a few weeks ago with friends who had been there several times before and LOVED it. My boyfriend and I arrived about 1 hour earlier and sat at the bar. The bar tender was great and recommended some very good tequila for a $14 Margarita. Ok was awesome, didn't mind paying the price for something good. Then our friends showed up and we joined them at the table. The service was AWEFUL. Waiter took forever to take our order, while people who came in after us, had started receiving their food.,ate and actually left!! They eventually took our drink orders which took forever and then brought our tapas out in 30 min increments and had no regard or sense of urgency over it. I will not bore you with the details. Here's the icing on the cake: One of my friends complained politely to our server - and that's when all service to us seemed to stop. Another friend called the manager over and complained to him - did not seem to care. Another friend went over and spoke to the manager - at this point got even worse, maybe he didn't understand English. Then I went to the rest room and caught him on my way back to the table. I explained how the service was awful and would never come back again. He proceeded to speak to me in Spanish (which unbeknownst to him) I understood every nasty word he said to me! He then starts speaking (yelling) in English telling me that we were arriving in shifts and a bunch of untrue BS. The final straw was when he told me "well you get what you deserve." What amazing customer service.....not. At this point, we were served only one of the tapas that we had ordered (which was disgusting and disappointing) . My boyfriend and I left after the owner had spoken some choice words to my boyfriend who confronted him and told him how disrespectful he was to me. I would not waste my money on this place at all. What little I had to eat was disgusting. Drive a few short miles and go to Barcelona - a class act place, amazing food, amazing service and have never had a bad experience at the New Haven or Fairfield Barcelona's. By far the best Tapas restaurant in Southern CT. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Do not waste your time going here. read more

Don't go on a Monday. I did yesterday and regretted it. When I walked in the bar was closed, with all the stools up on the bar. Then they started cleaning the carpet in there, which I could easily smell in the main restaurant where I was seated (and I don't have a very good sense of smell). So It was like going to a closed restaurant where they let you in anyway. The bathroom (men's) needs repair... the wall paper is peeling off and has graffiti written in a section, and the pipes coming out of the wall under the toilet are rusty and gross. The food was good. I had the chickpea tapas and the guacamole tapas. I could have easily had just one, as I prefer a smaller lunch. Overall, the food was good, but the ambiance was awful. Who shampoos the carpets in a restaurant while it's open? Really bad judgement. Maybe the moral of the story is don't go on Mondays, but regardless, things like the bathroom decor need attention. Great service, food and drink selections. They have outdoor seating, as well as indoor dining and a bar area. It's not the fanciest option given the New Haven options, but a great casual to a bit dressy occasion without getting too stuffy. The food is great - a nice range of tapas and main courses, with rotating specials (almost always highly recommended). They keep the menu fresh ad updated. Solun is one of our most favorite spots for a quick drink and tapas or for a full lunch or dinner. We have twice attended Solun's Easter brunch and the food was delicious and the atmosphere lovely. We have never been disappointed in anything at Solun; I especially enjoy the grilled artichokes. Before Covid it was a special treat to walk in and listen to some lovely music by local, and not so local musicians. Afterwards, we were still able to to so, distanced and wearing masks, outside in the parking lot which had become a safe and distanced alternative to indoor dining. During the height of Covid, Carlos, ever the forward thinker, supplied his customers with the freshest produce I had seen in months: the fresh fruit and vegetables were outstanding! Now Solun is offering family style meals to be taken out and my friends and I highly recommend the paella. I can't say enough about the efficient, friendly and informative waitstaff; they are always ready with a good recommendation and an excellent wine pairing. The ambiance was welcoming, particularly the room away from the bar. Tristan, our host, was friendly and helpful. The drinks and the list of wines were very satisfying. The tapas, just right. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. I had the Segovia suckling pig, as tasty and tender inside and crackling outside as I remember it when I was in Spain. The owner, Ramon Hernandez, visited us and was hospitable and welcoming. Ihe should be proud of his restaurant. In short, we had a terrific dinner. It will not be the only one my wife and I will have when we visit Connecticut again from Boston, which has not overall place about tapas Spanish place combining such many features just like this one to my knowledge. read more
