We were back in town and had to visit Solly's. I will acknowledge that it was lunch time and the counter was full. After being seated and having our order taken, we waited 50 minutes for our burgers. I ordered my burger on a pillow which used to be toasted french bread...it is now a soggy soft hoagie bun. Not only have they definitely cut back on butter, my husband had two burgers and only one side of each was toasted and lacking the normal amount of butter. Ok, I know Solly's is supposed to be a Milwaukee institution for being the spot to get a burger. I've been here a few times and I just don't get it. So Solly's is a greasy spoon type diner. Seating is around a counter and the place isn't all that large. So what are my issues with Solly's? So you order a Solly combo (burger & fries) that comes to just under $10. Your fries are brought out to you about 5 minutes before your burger. This might not be a thing for some, but unless I've ordered an appetizer I prefer to get all of my food at the same time. Now onto the burger. Can you say overpriced for what you get. The bun is about the size of a value burger at McDonald's and the patty is only slightly thicker than that same McDonald's burger. As another reviewer noted, the dollup of butter slathered on top is almost as thick as the burger itself. The patty itself is a delicious heart attack in waiting soaked in the melting butter. There just isn't much of it there. For the price the burger should be about twice the size that it actually is. I've not visited Solly's for anything other than the butter burger so I can't speak to the rest of the diner options. If a butter drenched burger is your thing Solly's is the spot. Just be prepared to be underwhelmed with the size. read more

I love this place. The burgers are great, but more so I am enamored by the charming mid 20th Century ambiance. It's like a trip in the Wayback Machine with Peabody and his boy Sherman, set to 1968. Only the racism is gone and the draft is Russian not American. Now I don't know how many of the underwhelmed reviewers here are old enough to know what I'm talking about but they use an old school Hamilton to make the shakes, the counter seating, the home made pies, it's all so heartwarming to this Boomer. If the restaurant is busy you will receive terrible service with long wait times for food. Also, food will come at different times. We order burgers, fries and cheese curds. Burgers came first, 15 minutes later cheese curds arrived, 15 minutes later here come the fries minus one order of fries. After we ate the burgers and cheese curds we were ready to leave but the waitress kept telling us the fries will be right out. The food was great but not great enough to wait 15 minutes for each food to arrive. I live within walking distance from Sollys but we rather drive to Culver's or Kopps for better service and for us to get all of our food at once. read more

This is a a bar/grill that serves some pretty decent food. I ended up getting the shrimp and corn chowder and the chicken tenders with fries. The chicken tender with fries were just your average chicken tender with fries nothing to make a fuss about. The shrimp and corn chowder on the other hand was some of the best that I've had besides the Creole shrimp and corn chowder I've had in my home state of Louisiana. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this place before. Granted, I've only visited it twice in the 16 years I've lived in Milwaukee. I know the butter burger is a big deal around these parts but in general, I'm not a fan. I'm especially not a fan when the burger itself is relatively bland and flavorless. Solly's allows you to choose the level of butter from a lot to light on the butter. I do appreciate that. Burgers run from $7 for a plain burger/no fries to $17 for a designer burger with all the trimmings and fries. We settled on the $12.5 double cheese burger with fries. The burgers aren't bad but they use sirloin, they steam them, and they don't really season the meat so it's a bit underwhelming. With the stewed onions, it's kind of a like a high end White Castle burger. The glorious melted cheese helps and the buns are good. The crinkle cut fries are large, the portions are large, but mine kind of tasted like stale frozen fries from a bag. Not the whole order, just a few here and there. The interior is small. There are two counters with seats and a few tables here and there. The service is good but the food is kind of slow to come out. read more

We heard this was the best burger spot in town. I tried the double super bacon cheeseburger with easy butter and I could tell from the first bite why it is an award winning burger. The wife got the super cheeseburger special with easy butter as well and after tasting a bite of her burger, I was underwhelmed. We should have ordered two of the Double super bacon cheeseburgers. I paid the up charge for the onion rings and it was worth it. They were very good. Wife opted for the crinkle fries. They were good but not sure how they won the "Milwaukee's Best" title. Ok this place has been a bookmark for ever so I thought I would go there on Saturday for a burger so I looked at the pictures on Friday and I saw some good looking breakfast pictures and since I absolutely love breakfast I showed up just before 7am. The place is small and packed with two counter stools open so that's a good sign. The place is basically old school counter stools with one small table, a blast from the past. This was a Cheers place where everyone knows you're name filled with regulars enjoying breakfast. The breakfast menu is not overly big like an average breakfast place but has enough to satisfy most people. I opted for the farmers breakfast which is two eggs, hash browns, meat and toast. My breakfast took a while because the place was slammed but no big deal, open for 25 minutes and packed already. The breakfast looked good and I noticed right away that my sourdough toast was the real deal made by bread smith, I asked. The sourdough toast was a great sourdough which was the nice dense kind with that great chew to it, thank you. The eggs were perfect sunny side up. The sausage patty was a nice big tasty/juicy one and not the bland kind. My server asked if I wanted onions in my hash browns and I said yah, I don't usually do that but I'm glad I did because they were delicious and so good. Perfect hash browns with that nice crispy golden crust with the soft potatoes cooked perfect. Tasty breakfast that you can't reproduce at home because that flat top grill is seasonal with time and all the other foods. WOW this was a great old school greasy spoon breakfast that would be great for a hangover breakfast. I never would have thought that a famous burger spot would remind me of Franks diner in Kenosha, another great old school breakfast place. You can pass, not much to see here. Service was terrible. Took forever to take our order when we sat down, and when I asked about her favorite burger.....her answer..... "I don't eat burgers, so I have never had one."Hahaha...oh your serious....WOW, ok. Clearly it is a steamed burger in butter, normally I would be a player, but this was boring, not much flavor and tiny! No bigger than a McDonald's cheese burger. Ok, so that means it's cheap right?? Butter burgers are tasty. I had a double (2/3 lb) and the wife a single (1/3 lb). Double was too big, so next time the single. The burger was very good and moist (with the butter they add), but I believe I clogged an entire artery with that one burger. As other have pointed out, maybe a little less butter. Fries are also very good, would have like more. They arrive before the burger and there is a good chance they are gone by the time the burger arrives. That may be the goal, so you can focus on your burger, but I like to have fries with my burger. Staff was attentive and gave us good suggestions. I would definitely visit again when in the area. We visited Solly's early on a Friday evening for dinner, my first time going. The atmosphere is an old-school diner, and they do not have any alcohol or beer - instead, you can order shakes and malts. The seating is all counter seating around the main grill and soda fountain, so if you're with a group or it is crowded, you may struggle to find seating. The service was okay - the server who ended up finishing our dinner with us was friendlier. It was cool to see the burgers being cooked in front of you, and although I appreciated that the servers were able to do some of the cooking as there appeared to be only one chef...please be sure to have them wear appropriate cooking attire, like gloves and hats/hair nets...because I did unfortunately suffer the consequences. Because of that, I am disappointed to say I think I would avoid returning. I was torn between one of their famous burgers and the fish fry (since it was Friday). Ultimately, I went with the fish fry, which was fine, but I would say to stick with what they're known for. The fish fry was decent, but it was breaded - I feel like battered fish fry is so much better. My significant other had the Peno Burger (jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, and onions) which was delicious and dripping with butter, as they're known for. Check your diet at the door! Walked in to kill some time over a quick bite and what a lucky find it was! I was immediately impressed with the old-fashioned diner interior and the friendliness of the owner and the waitress. Ordered a bowl of chili first and it was delicious. Then heard the waitress explain the menu to another customer and was shocked to learn that Solly's is apparently the birthplace of the original butter burger- a Wisconsin staple that I adore! Thats how my low carb lunch turned into a cheat meal and boy it was worthy of breaking the diet! Onions cooked in meat juices and butter is what really made the burger sing for me! The waitress winked at me and offered a fork so I could pick up the deliciously looking drippings, she just read my mind as I was not going to leave one bit behind. My whole experience felt like going back in time and I admire places that have that time-machine quality to them. I grew up in Glendale in the little neighborhood just behind Solly's, across from Sprecher Brewery. As a kid, I would always ride my bike over to Sprecher to get a soda and then to Sollys for a butter burger. Absolute, classic diner, sollys has the original, and the best butter burger around. My mouth is watering writing this. The staff are always quick and friendly, no bs straight to it. I've always loved the set up, it gives such a nostalgic, feel sitting at the counter, watching your burger being made from a distance, everything made front of house. One of my all-time favorites are the malts, it pairs so nicely with a burger and fries. The fries are always scolding hot, fresh crisp and salty. To this day, I make a trip to sollys at least 2 to 3 times a year. I think after this review, I'll have to go get another butter burger. I've been a few times now all during COVID. I have to preface that I don't eat burgers so I cannot judge their butter burger but the friends I've gone with have all loved it! Their milkshakes are also absolutely wonderful - just wish they had a few more flavors. I've had the bratwurst and it's similarly drenched in butter and on a fantastic pretzel roll - it's absolutely delicious. Their cheese curds are so fresh and lightly breaded - perfect in some ranch dressing. Things I wish could improve: honey mustard for their chicken tenders - it's not a current option (sad for me), enforcing masks for other people (the plexiglass every few seats is great but they don't enforce too well when people come in for pickup). Some of the food seems a bit pre-packaged but I'm probably just biased because I don't eat half the things on the menu. Overall, definitely worth a try! read more

I really don't understand the hype around the burgers here. They are highly priced compared to the competition and there is not much flavor to the meat. The flavor all comes from the stick of butter dropping from the burger if a cardiac arrest is what you're looking for. It's hard to get past the taste of butter and actually enjoy the burger. The entire bun was soaking wet and even the bag was soaked in butter. I really was hoping for it to be better based off of the good reviews. The malts here are DELICIOUS!! For the past 5 years, I have heard my now-husband tell me all about how perfect Solly's malts are. To be honest, I kind of thought his judgment was clouded by nostalgic memories of him and his grandpa having having malts at Solly's so when I finally made my way to Wisconsin and we stopped by this establishment, I wasn't particularly excited. The place itself is small and quaint and the staff is nice enough but the malts (especially the strawberry malt) are really what make Solly's unforgettable! Not bad. We were early for our tour at Sprecher Brewery and wanted some food- this place is rgt down the street. The lady that greeted us was also the cashier and our server. You seat yourself so we chose a 2 top table over sitting at the counter. My husband ordered a burger and fries and I had a salad w/ grilled chicken. Avoid their ranch dressing and go with their 1000 Island for your salad. Everything tasted good and filled us up until our next eating destination. The bathroom has the old school towel in a pull down dispenser for drying your hands- haven't seen that in years. The inside is dated but service was friendly and the food came out quickly read more

TL:DR - thin patty, stewed onions, soft bun, and butter make for a burger whose ingredients melt together in your mouth, vs anything really standing out. There's a trade off between flavor and not feeling sluggish with the butter amount for me. "Original" amount of butter tasted miles better than the "easy butter" amount, but also made you feel that much more sluggish afterwards. Service was super nice. Came in while traveling through town. It was good to see the place open and being serious about health. They had plastic boards up between each stool at the bar and all employees had masks on and changed plastic gloves several times while we were there. Had seen the place on several food shows. Wasn't super hungry, so only got an original single "easy butter" cheeseburger while my partner got the cheeseburger with the original amount of butter. The burger itself is relatively thin, similar in thickness to a mcdonald's cheeseburger but much wider in diameter. The thin burger combined with a super soft bun, stewed onions, and "easy butter" made for a very easy to eat burger that melted in your mouth. All the ingredients kind of melt together as you eat, given how soft they all were compared to larger meeat patties or burgers that contain crisp lettuce or onions. I did take two bites of my partner's burger with the original "amount" of butter. I personally will continue to go with "easy butter". It's kind of a trade off between taste and feeling super heavy/groggy. The original amount tastes AMAZING. You can really taste the butter here. It adds a great amount of fat and salt to really make it a cheat meal to enjoy. But I could legit feel the two bites I had slide all the way down and just feel the butter slow me down. The easy butter on the other hand, you don't really notice the butter flavor wise, it's just keeps the burger super juicy. But I didn't feel as heavy afterwards. We also came in early evening (430) on a wednesday, and there wasn't anyone else in, so service was great and attentive. Had good conversations with the cook and server that left a good impression. All in all, a worthwhile stop that will likely be added to our road trips in the future. read more
