Sally's Burgers is a must if you're in Milwaukee. The waitstaff is super friendly and welcoming, the cheeseburgers are juicy, buttery, and absolutely delicious, and the crowd gives the place a fun, laid-back vibe. Great food, great people--definitely coming back

I grew up with weekly visits to Solly's for burgers and fries with my mom, brother, his two stuffed animals (an Odie dog and Fritzie - an orange velvet weiner dog that had been recovered so many times it was almost round). We moved north before I reached 18, and my brother and I moved even further to opposite coasts in our twenties. But we left behind great friends and memories in Milwaukee and every time we return a lunch at Solly's has always been on our To Do list. A few years ago we were there together and during lunch we visited with one of our original waitresses from the 70's - the one my brother had such a crush on. Best thing was - she remembered him and mentioned the orange dog before we prompted her! That's the kind of place this is. So, when I was in Milwaukee last week I knew I had to plan for a lunch of a butter burger with cheese (which I just call a cheeseburger at Solly's) and some fresh-out-of-the-fryer fries. As always - soooo tasty, so perfect, and a wonderful walk down memory lane. I hope they continue, with both the quality and menu, after they sell. If I were closer I would be in line to buy the restaurant to carry those memories on to another.

Get over to Solly's for there original butter burger. I love these old places that have been around forever! Probably not good for you with that much butter but it was awesome and the coleslaw had a nice horseradish kick! Pro-tip dip your cheese curds in the extra butter melted on the bottom of your plate! Nice people, service and ambiance!

I was surprised to see that I hadn't written review of Solly's in all the years I've been on Yelp! This is a family favorite location to get burgers - yes, their butter burgers have SLABS of butter ...partially why we don't eat here too often. But once in a while, my body can handle this much butter on a burger! During my recent visit, I was surprised to see that their milkshakes (and malts) have expanded quite a bit beyond just vanilla or chocolate - now has hot fudge, caramel, banana, and more. The interior has a classic diner feel with swivel chairs around both counters. They do close earlier than the typical restaurant, so double check their hours before you go.

Butter burger without onions

I've been to Solly's a couple times since my first visit back in 2015, but never during breakfast hours. I finally had an opportunity to do so before work, so I ordered a ham and cheese omelette with a bagel. Since you can get burgers during breakfast, I also ordered their famous butter burger without onions. The omelette was ok, but certainly nothing special. I didn't love that it was a little runny on the inside and, without hashbrowns, it felt overpriced at $12.75. The buttery portion of the bagel was the best part of that plate. As I commented in my review from 2015, the butter burger is small and expensive for what you get. We're talking only a little larger than a standard McDonald's cheeseburger for three to four times the price. It's a good burger and I appreciate the amount of butter they use on it, but it's heavily bolstered by its reputation.

This place looks a lot bigger on the outside. We decided to come in before a Brewers and it was already full at 11am. It's a diner counter style seating, and we had to wait about 10 minutes for some stools to clear up. Their customer service was great. The lady working there was awesome. Very cheerful and made sure you didn't leave without a smile. We started off with an order of their cheese curds and we all ordered their Original Butter Burger w/ cheese. Although I definitely should have ordered a double. They were on the smaller side but tasted phenomenal. Definitely a lot of butter dripping off this burger as well. The cheese curds were good but some were still cold inside. Will without a doubt definitely be returning.

After reading some of low scoring reviews I'm shocked! Ate here for lunch because my husband was hounding about this place. We were greeted right away and pick anywhere you want to sit. Our server was so nice and he was working alone and it was busy! We didn't wait long and let me tell you, best butter burger I've ever had, hands down! And in one of the top 3 burgers I ever had. I'm glad my husband made me come here. This place is a treasure!

Established in 1936, this restaurant in Milwaukee is still family owned and operated. I had the Solly's big boy burger, a menu stable with two 100% local sirloin patties, specialty, Big Boy sauce, Wisconsin butter, shredded lettuce, and stewed onions on a brioche bun. Messi, but delicious. You can hardly even finish your fries after eating this massive burger. The staff is very polite, and friendly. If you're in the area, this is a must stop.

Original Cheesehead Burger (easy butter)

How can you not love Solly's from its nostalgic charm to its creation and innovation of the Butter Burger. You really feel like you're stepping back into time when you walk into this place and our waiter at the counter was super patient and made some helpful suggestions on how to navigate our orders. I also have to compliment how impeccably clean Solly's is too. We went ahead ordered the Cheesehead burger with easy butter. I wish they would have given me the Solley's burger but in a double, but they said they couldn't do that. Anyway, that 1/3lb burger on the Cheesehead was a bit too tough and thick and I couldn't taste much of the meat quality on it. However, easy butter is the way to go. I could still taste the delicious butter as it slowly melted over my burger but I wasn't having a coronary at the same time either. Even our waiter said every employee gets their burger with easy butter. The steamed onions were also a nice touch. All in all, I would call this burger the absolute best White Castle burger I ever had, because that's what it tasted like. I hate White Castle lol, but this burger made it seem like this is what White Castle was aspiring to be. I

We heard about Solly's and were told it was better than another burger joint we have been to. Of course we had to try it out then, because I am always down for a burger. Solly's offers a pretty wide array of things but we were really just there to try out the butter burgers they take pride in. Let's talk seating, it's minimal. They have two wrap around counters in an open kitchen concept, old school diner. We brought a larger party so we split between the two counters and that was only inconvenient because it was two different servers so we weren't able to get one check. So if you're a larger party, expect to wait a while for seating if you want to sit together or pay on one check. We ordered the cheese curds, and a few different burger options. The curds came out in a cute little fry basket with a small cup of ranch. They were good, actually really good. The fries came out before the rest of the food, which led to me eating almost all of my fries while waiting for my Big Boy burger. The fries were really hot and crispy, but didn't have any salt. Salt is readily available on the counter, but it doesn't really stick to a dry fry as well as it does the ones fresh out of the fryer. The burgers came out. The big boy is two 1/3 lb patties with a bun in the middle. I added bacon, because bacon. The bottom bun of the three bun sections was stout, but it had to be due to the butter pool coming off the burger (not knocking it, just calling it how I see it). The bottom of my bun had a large unmelted chunk of butter on it. To me a butter burger means the butter is in the meat, but I am not positive if there is butter in the burger meat or not at Solly's. I only add that because with how the butter was unmelted I feel like it was just spread on the buns and not in the meat. The burger was ok. I had high hopes and that may have tainted my experience, but the burger was relatively flavorless and somehow both really juicy and messy, but magically so dry I had to drink my soda in large gulps to clear my throat. I finished the whole burger, so it wasn't horrible, it was just really flavorless. When I went up to pay for both of the checks (remember couldn't put them together), I was told the card reader wasn't working. In their defense, there was a sign on the door that I missed walking in. Sadly, this wouldn't have been an issue if the on site ATM was working or if the QR code on the receipt worked for paying. Basically, I had to leave my family to go to an ATM offsite to get cash. Listen, I hate writing a less than spectacular review, but the overall experience was underwhelming. The wait staff was super sweet and this isn't a reflection of them or the cooks. I think the burgers are something you either like or don't. For me it was simply not something I liked. I would have given three, maybe four stars if there wasn't the issue with how to pay at the end. If you do go here, just be ready to doctor your food up with whatever condiments you can find unless you like the burger coming out tasting like buttery cooked beef.

Known for their burgers but have you stopped for breakfast? We stopped in after golfing nearby at Lincoln Park for breakfast. Burgers are still available in the morning. I opted for an omelette. Food was delicious as usual. I always need to remind myself that this is almost exclusively countertop seating. There is one table off to the side. Lunch and dinner times have always been really busy when I've gone here. Breakfast did not seem to be as busy the weekend we went and there was plenty of seating.

Side of fries. They were over-cooked.
Rick R.

I haven't been here in many years. Wanted to see if I was missing out. I started with a cup of Lobster Bisque, which was pretty solid...good flavor and texture. I added a basic cheeseburger with a side of fries. Looking at photos, it seems they don't use as much butter as they used to, which is not a bad thing. I thought they used way too much butter the last time I went, which I felt was gimicky (is that a word). I love crinkle cut fries, but these were over-cooked and not seasoned, or under-seasoned if they were. I added salt and pepper to help, but that is best done when they are fresh out if the fryer, so the seasoning sticks to the oil before it absorbs into the fries. I will say the service I received was very good! She was attentive and friendly. I think Solly's burgers are still good, but the burger game in Milwaukee is MUCH improved, so I feel there are tastier options available now that were not available during Solly's earlier years. It's still a great place to bring out-of-towners for the nostalgia and Milwaukee institution" status.

My husband and I came in on a whim, and given that it was a Friday night we got very lucky being able to snag two seats at the bar. I love bar seating honestly, especially where bartenders are friendly, as they were. These guys knew what they were doing too, because they wiped up our craft cocktails in a flash. Moxie is kind of known for their martinis, and have a whole section on their menu for them, so naturally that's what I gravitated towards. I can't recall the name of the one I chose, but essentially it was Hendrick Gin, cucumber, and mint. So refreshing. My husband had a bourbon cocktail of sorts and really enjoyed it too. We weren't in the mood for full-dinner so instead shared the short rib medallions from the apps list. Those were tasty! Perfectly cooked braised short rib on top polenta medallions with bourbon-marinated peaches and cambozola cheese... what's not to love? We also had the caesar salad with chicken, which was crispy and hit the spot. Plan to spend a decent amount of $$ dining here, but you get what you pay for. All in all, a nice night!

It definitely seemed that the staff here were simply not prepared for the volume of people that came out to celebrate the area and support the Historical Society. Thankfully the food I had was pretty good, the grilled cheese sandwich paired well with their tomato bisque soup--I took a chance on the soup not being a traditional tomato soup fan (Campbell's? Gross!) but I found Three Lions version to be hearty and flavorful, definitely a combo that I would get again in the future.
