Came here before a show last week and was able to get a seat before having a reservation. It was nice because even though we walked in during Trivia, we were seated in another section so did not have to hear that. We started with the espresso martinitis, and although they had a good flavor, we felt they lacked a serving of alcohol and ending up ordering a well shot to add it in. We shared a Caesar salad and a brisket sandwich. If you want to order a Caesar salad, please know that it has a very strong anchovy taste. The bread that accompanied the salad tasted like just toast with not even a butter flavor on it. The brisket sandwich was slightly cold. It was cubes of brisket that we do wish was more tender. Ok while the place is delicious and really cute from the inside, the only reason I wouldn't go back was the manager who went to take our order but did not have customer service skills. We asked for recommendations since it was our 1st time, & she was not helpful I let her know I was looking at the appetizers for happy hour & asked which she recommended, her answer was: "so your not really going to order a meal?". I asked for my time, and eventually we got a younger guy to take our order, who definitely had a better personality for his job. The rest of the staff was helpful thank god she didn't return to our table again because I was able to enjoy my meal with my family, I would say the only reason for her rudeness was because of the color of our skin. So no I wouldn't return unless she's out, but for the food part of it I would because it was delicious. Went last Sunday about 6PM. It was easy to get in. It's a casual place, with inside and outside seating. Service was good, except the women's bathroom needed to be stocked. We ordered the chicken shawarma wrap, and beef brisket sandwich, both with side salads. We didn't order drinks. The shawarma was tender and had good flavor, but it was a bit salty and greasy (soaking my wrap and upsetting my stomach), and came with what tasted like jarred pickles and an aioli. The side salad was lettuce topped with tomatoes and pickled onions. There was an upcharge to get the salad instead of fries. The brisket sandwich included cubes of meat. My husband said it was good. So, in summary, the food is good, not great. If you're looking for a casual place, with good service, and drinks and/or food a bit better than bar food, this may be the place for you. read more

I got the hot chicken sandwich, and no lie, it beats out my previous #1 in the country I had in Denver. It was flavorful and so juicy, not to mention a huge portion! Top notch drinks! This place is has the best cocktails! The Lime in the Coconut drink was refreshing and delicious. The Flowers for Baby drink was delicious. We had a party of 7 and we were sat quickly, the food was delicious, and the drinks are the cherry on top that gets us to make the hour drive to visit again. Teresa was our server, and she was funny, attentive, and very welcoming. Between the 7 of us we ordered 3 appetizers deviled eggs, hummus, and baba ghanoush. All of it was delicious. The hummus came with veggies and soft, fresh pita bread. I ordered the wedge salad with steak and I was extremely happy with my decision. All of us loved the food and drinks and vibe here. Took a ride up north today, ended up eating at the SB Kitchen. We were nicely greeted at the door, and we picked this spot because it was pet friendly and we had our dog with us. Our waiter was polite, took our order, delivered our food; she was great. Our food was good, fresh, and all of us really enjoyed the food and the place. We ate outside, and we know the space is exposed to the elements, that due to weather, it might be a bit different to maintain. The outside definitely needs a bit more care, as this is what customers see even from the sidewalk. Someone needs to clean the partition wall--it's dirty and dusty. Again, yes, it's an outside area, but it still needs to be cleaned properly. Also, PLS change your water carafes, they are plastic and old; not very appealing. Would we go back? Maybe, but without our dog, so maybe we can enjoy the inside. (By the way, next block, not too far, the Rustic Root was pretty crowded... and while both businesses are different, they both have an outdoor area-- and next time we will definitely visit here!) read more

An absolute gem in our childhood neighborhood! The food, cocktails and service were absolutely incredible. I ordered the salmon, and honestly, it was the most delicious salmon I have ever had at any restaurant anywhere. That's impressive! It was seared to perfection, and the sauces and sides were DIVINE. We also ordered the kebabs. Holy. Moly. Again, incredible. Layering flavor and texture with fresh herbs, pita, pickled onions etc onto each bite. The owner and chef is of Middle Eastern descent, and that rich cultural history is delightfully woven throughout the menu. We were too busy throughly enjoying the moment and our meals to snap more than one photo. The cocktails were luscious and well-balanced. And, our server was absolutely excellent. Her knowledge of the menu was extensive. She is also the Lead Bartender and was filling in for a server, all while wearing a beautiful smile and 'happy to be here' attitude. I feel badly I have forgotten her name! Our one and only little suggestion would be to place some small tea light candles and a single flower on each table. It would add so much to the ambience. I ordered the cauliflower bites which were tasty but I personally felt like they had too many other components with it. We also had the Mac and cheese with bacon and my brother said it was quite tasty. I had the truffle mushroom risotto which was much better than expected! It was super flavorful and the portion was heftier than I anticipated. I can't speak to service or ambiance as we did take out but we walked by it the next day and it looks so cute with indoor and outdoor seating! We went in on a Friday around 5pm to grab a drink at the bar before heading to dinner someplace else. We had been in a couple times before for lunch and it was fine. We sat at the bar and ordered two Grey Goose martini's, one dirty, one regular. The dirty martini was so-so. It was only filled up about 2/3 to the top. The regular martini was sweet and we asked the bartender why and she said that's how they make "regular" martinis. They put some kind of liqueur in it, which we have never heard of. It was terrible. Some people entered and were waiting to be seated. The same bartender came out from behind the bar to seat them while holding and shaking a martini shaker. It was so unprofessional for her to be walking around the restaurant with menus in one hand, and shaking a martini shaker in the other. Two different parties came in for happy hour and the bartender told them there was no happy hour on Fridays, only on week days. Apparently there was a sign out front saying it was happy hour. The bartender told them that none of the restaurants/bars in Solana Beach have happy hour on Friday, which is not true. Both Rustic Root and Lana have them, which is probably why both of those places were packed and there was hardly anyone in SB Kitchen. Seemed like they were short staffed and the bartender was doing everything, so maybe that's why the experience was bad, but with new restaurants opening recently on Highway 101, they better get their act together or they will be out of business soon. read more

This is a relatively new restaurant in SB right on PCH. Very large space, mostly indoor, with fairly large bar. Some outside seating (maybe 7-8 tables outside max). Have eaten here twice - first time the place wasn't crowded at all. Both food and service were very good. Second time we went the place was full - food still good and came out in reasonable time. Horrible food. Honestly the worst lunch I've had all year. 2 kids meals and one sandwich was $75 (with tip). The oil was clearly rancid. We let the server know but she didn't seem surprised or concerned. We left all three meals almost entirely uneaten but not a single word from server (even after mentioning the oil had gone bad). Was similar to a Knotts/six flags meal which is crazy for a place this expensive and supposedly higher end. Chicken had a ton of gristle and it was paper thin, so really a fried batter sandwich. Our first table was wobbly. Moved to another that was uneven and dirty. Walls need paint as there's scrapes and dings all over and entire place seems unkempt. Really looks like a place that takes no pride in the front of the house. Who knows what's going on in the kitchen out of the sight of customers. After reading the good reviews on Yelp, I'm realizing that a lot of the people are from out of town and staying at nearby hotels. Explains why this place isn't rated a lot lower as it is not comparable to any of the staple restaurants in the area. read more

First , let me start by saying that our server was great! However, it was freezing inside. Colder inside than it was outside! I asked the waitress if they can turn on the heat and she said they don't have heating but if you look up you see these huge ducts and vents! I'm sure it wasn't her fault but the owner/management is just trying to save a few bucks not realizing how uncomfortable you are making your patrons feel. Randomly heard this place opened and couldn't wait to check it out! The space is large and welcoming, perfect for a date night or larger party. I got there early enough (happy hour) to snag a seat at the bar, but they also have communal tables which could come in handy during busy hours. I started with the hummus which was on the happy hour menu. It was delicious! It was paired with a little tzatziki and pesto as well, along with lots of tasty pita, grilled & pickled vegetables and olives. Portion was a generous size (too much for one). I was dying to try an entree so even though I was full I ordered the Shrimp Pasta (blackened shrimp, holy trinity, fettuccine, cream sauce, Parmesan) and while only took a couple bites, it was divine. I cannot wait to have the rest for dinner tonight. I met a couple men at the bar who ordered entrees as well; both were large portions and they said were quite delicious (the Mac & cheese with chicken and bacon and Not the Whole Bird). Walked in on a Saturday at 4:30, ambience was OK, in my opinion very dead for a saturday but I digress. Orded "The Hot Chick" sandwhich and had a few bites before I realized there was a long hair laying under my sandwhich across my fries, we told a staff member and he silently took it back to the kitchen to bring out a new plate. We then told our server which felt like she tried brushing it off. The staff member that we had previously told brought out my plate after my entire family was done eating but id say thats more at fault with the kitchen. After my meal I headed over to the restroom, I tried washing my hands but to my surprise the soap turned out to be hand sanitizer which felt pretty gross. A couple of weeks ago on a Thursday evening in December, my friend and I finished an art class in the Cedros District of Solana Beach. We were a bit hungry and wanted some wine, so we looked on the Yelp App to find somewhere to go. We saw that the Solana Beach Kitchen was a short walk away, and one of the only restaurants in the area still open. Anyway, we started the walk and on the way, I called the restaurant to ensure they were still serving food. They told me that the kitchen closed in half an hour and the. bar closed in an hour.... perfect! I looked up from the phone call and we were already there. We were welcomed and offered to sit in the bar. We grabbed a seat and a server walked up and told us that the kitchen was closing and they only had entrees. I told them that literally two minutes ago I had spoken to someone on the phone, and was told the kitchen would be opened for half an hour. I was told "They were misinformed". That was pretty annoying. I can understand a misunderstanding, but I would have preferred, "I'm so sorry, we just didn't realize....". Anyway, we were there so we decided to split an entree and get a couple glasses of wine. I would have ordered the Austin Hope Cabernet, but at $20 per glass, which it really too much. So we both ordered glasses of Pinot Noir. We also told them we would split the shrimp pasta. The wine came out quickly. The pasta also came out quickly. It was a bowl with shrimp and pasta in a cream sauce. They then gave us an extra plate to split it. It was such a mess to put half the pasta on the plate with a cream sauce. It splattered and was not very pretty during this process. We had been very clear that we were splitting it, and since they only were serving entrees, they certainly could have split it in the kitchen to save us the awkward mess. There are some good parts. It is a clean and spacious area, and despite the issues, the shrimp pasta was delicious. Our primary server was very friendly. Maybe if you do not come at night and you don't split a dish, this might be a good place. As for me, I will not return. read more

Bright, upscale and slightly antiseptic, Solana Beach Kitchen is that uncomfortable southern California phenomenon of bourgeois beach vibe set in an ungainly and overgrown strip mall. Its patrons match the interior color scheme of this establishment, something between a bar and a restaurant. If you're just coming off the back nine or have been shopping along Cedros avenue for things you don't need, SBK is likely to appeal. For me, it didn't. There was something just a bit too plastic about the place. Even the staff, although friendly and helpful, seemed just a touch artificial. All that said, it is a pleasant and open space, and you could certainly pick worse spots to have a beer or enjoy slightly elevated bar food. In our case, we ordered a couple of sandwiches and drinks during an uncrowded lunch hour. We had the chicken schwarma wrap (marinated chicken, pickle, garlic aioli wrapped in a flour tortilla) and the grilled cheese shorty (braised short ribs, melted cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and horseradish aioli on white bread). Both came with a reasonable side of fries. Both dishes turned out to be fairly good. It was clear they were using quality ingredients and the portions, while not massive, were generous. My wife and I felt more than satisfied at the end of our meals. Each did, however, suffer from opposite problems. While the grilled cheese lacked a lot of flavor, the wrap was overpowered by too much of the garlic aioli. Still, we ate and enjoyed both. With tip, our bill came to $50--a bit high, but par for the course given the location. One last small, annoying thing. I paid with credit card and got an electronic receipt from Squareup--an increasingly common occurrence. The next day, however, I got an email from SBK via Squareup's marketing services, asking for my personal information so they could "help me celebrate my birthday." Poor form. I recognize that there are all sorts of ways to drum up business, but spamming a customer is not it. Their food, drink and service should be their biggest advertisement. I recognize I have been kind of hard on Solana Beach Kitchen. Much of this review was based on personal preferences. Objectively, it's not a bad spot. But there are a number of eateries in the area I would rather be. read more
