I found this place here on yelp while looking for a spot close to home for a good tampiqueña. It had good reviews so we thought we would give it a try. Boy I am glad we did!! At first glance it looked a little more like one of the many "Berto's" across the valley. Don't let the looks deceive you though. The food was excellent and on par with almost any other high end Mexican restaurant. I ordered the tampiqueña and I wasn't disappointed. The meat was tender and flavorful and the enchilada was super tasty as well. I ordered corn tortillas with my meal and they were soft fluffy and tasted amazing. If I had to guess I would say they were homemade. My wife got the taco salad with grilled chicken which came in a fried flour shell. It did not disappoint!!!! Hands down the best taco salad I have had in a very long time and maybe even ever. This will definitely be a place we go to again and again. Great job on the food and the presentation of it and great job by the folks that worked there. They were friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. read more

We were looking for a new and great Mexican food restaurant to try I was actually thinking this place was going to have a bigger dine in area but it's actually kind of small inside but that's ok. The food here was super fantastic the asada is very tender and flavorful and their chile relleno's are definitely 10 stars the combos come with a choice of corn or flour tortillas with bean and rice. I honestly have high hopes for this restaurant and look forward to returning to try their tamales and cheese enchiladas this place is definitely worth the drive for lunch or dinner. read more

What a find in a strip mall!! It's set up more like a fast food or to-go restaurant, it's not your typical full Mexican restaurant. There are 6 open tables inside and 4 outside. There is a pretty vast menu to choose from, but the first thing that caught my eye was the Molcajetito. It's an individual size Molcajete and it's GENIUS!! I have always wanted my husband to try one but they are usually massive pots to share with a group and I can never split it with him since I don't eat any of the meats in there (except the chicken). So of course I told him to order it! It came out sizzling like a fajita dish with a healthy side of rice and refried beans. The pot is set up with the bigger cuts of meat displayed on top, but make sure you dig around and scoop from the bottom when filling your tortilla. There were only 3 tortillas so ask for extra if you want, but the dish is delicious enough on it's own to just eat with the fork straight out if the bowl! The guac was super fresh and he ate all of it which is rare because he doesn't usually like guac. The pot has carne asada, chicken, chorizo & cactus, topped with grilled green onions, queso fresco & Ranchero salsa. The chorizo had a bit of a spicy kick to it, but he likes spice so it was fine, and he would use the beans to mellow out the heat. I ordered the Fiesta Salad with grilled chicken. Devoured every last bite. It was a nice heap of shredded lettuce topped with plenty of chicken and cotija cheese, a few slices of avocado and cilantro. The rest of the toppings are all combined together so I had to go without since I can't have corn or onions, but it was still delicious. And the cilantro crema dressing was awesome I wanted to take the rest of the ramekin home with me! Just based off those two items I have a feeling you can't go wrong ordering anything off the menu, I'm sure it's all delicious. The place was nice and clean and they customer service was fantastic. I would say that the food is meh at best. They add a bunch of vibrant colors to make it seem appealing and be able to charge the prices they do. But the food is not any better than a Filiberto's or chain restaurant of the sort. Would not recommend purely based on the cost. read more

Admittedly, having been raised within 5 miles of one of the nation's best Mexican food communities, I've had trouble adjusting my expectations since leaving my childhood home. So what a delight to get something that felt both familiar AND different when I visited Sol Azteca. I'm not a vegetarian, but when dining by myself, it's not uncommon for me to eat a vegetarian meal. The corn quesadilla- yes! A quesadilla made on a large corn tortilla! Was filled with grilled peppers and onions and was definitely a whole meal with the pico, guacamole, sour cream on the side. Getting good veggies at a Mexican restaurant *shouldn't* be difficult, yet somehow has been (at least in the East valley)- Sol Azteca fixes this problem beautifully! You can dine in or pick up- the space is very casual, with a strong taco shop feel to it. I'll definitely dine here again. read more

We went about 5:30pm on a Wednesday and the place was busy, they were so quick at taking orders. Orders came fairly quickly and the portions were plentiful. I had the enchiladas and they were perfect! My husband had the steak street tacos and he was very pleased. I took my daughter here for dinner after seeing so many positive reviews. This place is tucked away in a shopping center and was easy to find. Inside was clean and the decor was what you'd expect. I got the enchilada trio plate and my daughter got the tamale plate. The food was hot and fresh and the plating was very nice. My daughter said her tamales were very good and she didn't have any complaints. My enchiladas were good, except the shredded chicken in the white enchilada was kinda dry and chewy. The shredded beef enchilada was good and seasoned well. The cheese enchilada was a little lacking in the cheese department. My daughter and I both thought the rice was kinda tough and a bit undercooked. All in all, we enjoyed our dinner and the positives outweighed the few negatives. The staff were very friendly and the service was prompt. This place is better than most "taco shops" and is probably a little more upscale. I think our experience may have been an outlier based off of other reviews. I'll give this place another try and get something different. read more

Having had the opportunity to eat from Sol Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Mesa recently with a large group of friends and family, I was able to try from their moderate sized menu offerings. Overall, I can say it was enjoyable. Although not what I would call outstanding - nor close. Most what I tried was tasty overall and well prepared to a large degree. Some of the items we tried included: the Chile Rellenos consisting of 2 mozzarella cheese (mozzarella???) stuffed (very small) Poblano Chiles in an batter (too thick), that was deep fried, and topped with a mediocre tasting ranchero salsa; 2 Enchiladas Plate with 2 corn tortillas bloated (really!) with cheese, alongside Crema and more cheese; their Tampiqueña Grilled steak in salsa roja cheese enchilada with some grilled scallions, alongside guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream and tortillas; and a few more dishes, and of course the all the aforementioned were served with the obligatory tortillas! My favorite of the bunch though (and not the best ever had) was the Molcajetito where the dish is supposedly heated in a cast iron vessel (which loses its effect when it is a take-out meal) of chicken, carne asada, chorizo, and cactus (not the best or freshest cactus I've tried) also along with grilled scallions (very stringy), queso fresco and I believe a house-made Ranchero Salsa, also sided with their pico de gallo (not bad), sour cream, guacamole and again tortillas. Yet again, through each of my tasting I found that although the meal was satisfying, it was lackluster and short of distinguishing characteristics or personality. I hate to say that although not bad, there is nothing here that can compete with other Valley dime-a-dozen non-regional, hard-to-identify or distinguish south-of-the-border regions or styles of Mexican-style fare. Sol is so good! From the queso to the fajita burrito to the enchilada plate to the rolled taco plate to the Azteca burrito to the kids cheese quesadilla everything is a hit! And it's consistent! There salsa bar is always full and clean nothing ever looks crusty and dry, and the staff is always on point and attentive! And there always busy! Is that's not a good sign idk what is! 20x better than fillebertos 20x Better than los favoritos this is a stand out restaurant and they do a great job! Several neighbors had told me about this place and I can't believe it took me so long to visit. Tucked into the side of the complex the parking can be a bit annoying, but worth the hassle. Absolutely amazing lunch specials and yummy self serve salsa bar with the best avocado salsa. I highly recommend the chicken chimi lunch combo that is served with sour cream, guacamole, rice, beans and a drink all under $10! I usually order a side of chips that are served warm.
