Best Mexican food I've had in Arizona by far. Coming from San Diego, I've had lots of great Mexican food, with Mexico only 20 minutes away. I liked that there was options here rather than your typical tacos or burritos. I tried the Guajolote and it was a burst of flavor and texture. It is basically a Mexican breakfast sandwich, absolutely phenomenal. The Tlacayo was another great one I tried and it was only $5.50, definitely a nice addition. The tacos were very greasy and the meat wasn't good. The birria didn't taste like birria and the meat in the tacos de lengua were cut into big chunky pieces and had no flavor. We didn't like the fact that the soda fountain had all the hoses and soda containers all exposed. The lady at the register wasn't friendly, nice or welcoming. Didn't even bother smiling at us. The first impression matters a lot when you arrive at a restaurant, and this one wasn't a very good one. Even though there were no customers, several tables were dirty, as was the entire establishment. I was looking for a place that sold Pozole, and I saw that this place had almost 5 stars, so I decided to give it a try. Honestly, as I said at the beginning, the first impression matters a lot, and second, obviously, is the food. Once again, I was not at all happy with the Pozole. Very happy with this place and look forward to returning soon. At the counter, I asked if the pastor had pineapple in it (I'm not a fan). She said it could be made with or without, so I went with the pastor burrito. I sat down and she came over to clean my table, asked how I found the place, and if I liked Mexican food (it's my favorite). A few minutes later she brought out a tlacoyo plate for me to try for free. The burrito came out with a selection of salsas. I try to hit the small "hole in the wall places", they're usually closer to homemade, authentic & better portions. Not here, $10 for 3 tacos. The carnitas is smokey & juicy, the asada was ok but little bits of fat. The interior smelled a bit off, but hey I gave it a shot. read more

Since I fell in love with them in an awesome mexican restaurant in old town San Diego while on a family vacation I have been looking for their equal ever since!! The tacos were pretty good...the problem is nothing else is acceptable! The place is in a ratty run down strip center. The place is ugly inside and out. But even worse is how filthy it was inside. As for the tacos, you get onions and cilantro and sickly limes with no juice. You can choose from green or red salsa. No pickled red onions, cabbage, other salsas, jalapeños or any of the many other condiments available at other places. While good tasting meats, at almost $4 a taco, there is no way to even consider dining here. read more

Not my first time here. But my first time since Covid hit. Forgot how GREAT the food is, the staff. The owner and his daughter are lovely people. You know when you want something good but simple, uncomplicated? That was me tonight. Pork POSOLE to the rescue!!!! It was easily two cups of meat and hominy in a light and delicious broth. The cilantro I added was so fresh, not stemmy either. 5/6 corn tortillas were a great addition. I drank the broth at the end. My husband had beef street tacos - no photo as he made no haste. Delicious beef and nothing spared on quantity. Cheese quesadilla was simple and great. They use the GOOD CHEESE here. Before I've always had the chicken dorado tacos and can attest they are AMAHZING but best eaten there on site. Since they are from over near MX City you'll see things on their menu you've not ever enjoyed - ASK them and they'll happily explain. Worth a drive from another end of the valley? We love this place. We discovered it in 2020 when we were looking to find good street tacos. We went and we asked the owner what he'd recommend and he made us a Pambazo (hope I spelled that right lol) so we ordered that and some chicken tacos and carne asada tacos. He ended up not charging us for the Pambazo. Tacos were AMAZING! SALSAS were AMAZING! Now the Pambazo .... FREAKIN' DELICIOUS!! So grateful the owner let us try it! We have been returning ever since! We try different items as often as we can when we go and we never regret it. The woman(I believe is the owners daughter) who rang us up a couple months ago let us try a Tlacoyo made of chick peas (the have chick peas or potato) and let me tell youuuuu... IT WAS AMAZING. We just went yesterday to get food from them and I ordered one of each tlacoyo and I was in heaven. We eat here at least a few times a month lol. So tasty! We love this restaurant. The staff is nice. Excellent food. Owner introduced himself. Left for a minute; returned with complementary dish they are known for: Tiacoco. Well, they're known for alot of other dishes. But the tacos (birria, barbacoa, etc.) were delicious. Met a friend and her son to enjoy our Saturday breakfast that turned into brunch... a late brunch and almost through lunch. This place is a hidden gem. The quality of the food here is outstanding. I tried the tlacoyo potato. Stuffed potato inside a sope type, drizzled with salsa verde and cheese. There was no meat on it, but it was beyond delicious and filling. They were nice enough to give me a free chickpea version while I waited. I ordered the red pozole. The pozole was pork and probably the best pozole I've had in AZ. It's rich with flavor and the hominy and meat were tender. They have it every day, so no waiting just for the weekends. I also got 5 tacos. The carnitas, asada, chicken and pastor. I'm not sure what they do to their meat, but it was high quality and really flavorful. It's not your average street taco. Make sure you try the red and green salsas. They make everything in house and you can tell. The brown salsa has a smoky flavor, the red is intense. But the chunky green has to be the best. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food in Mesa, this place is it. It is tucked away in a little strip mall, but it is larger than it looks on the inside. The menu on the wall above the cashier is in Spanish. As we walked in, I knew right away we were in for a real Mexican food experience. The cashier was friendly and offered to explain anything we had questions about. There were a few things on the menu that we did not recognize, and we ended up ordering familiar items: carne asada burrito, quesadillas & pastor tacos. A nice man delivered our food to the table a few minutes later, along with a complimentary item, tlacoyo. He explained what it is, and suggested we try it. It is a thick, oval, blue corn pancake with mashed chickpeas, queso fresco, sour cream, cilantro, and spicy green salsa. It was absolutely delicious. The burrito was very good. The carne was tender and crispy. It came with beans, cilantro and onions. The quesadillas were also great. Tender, fresh tortilla, filled with white cheese. The pastor tacos were excellent, with little chunks of pineapple mixed in with the meat. The man who brought our food came by as we were finishing our dinner to check on us. I asked what style food they serve, and he clarified it is Hidalgo style, which is state near Mexico City in central Mexico. He recommended trying their specialty, Guajolote next time, and explained it is a sandwich with enchiladas as the main filling. So intriguing! Glad we found this little gem. The owner came to our table and asked how we liked the food. He was friendly and informative. As a generous act of kindness, he brought out a free Tlacoyas( I Dk how to spell it) made with blue corn and chick peas. It was delicious! Decor is simple and cheerful. Tables could be cleaned faster but the staff is very friendly and helpful especially to us "gringos" who don't know anything about eating authentic colloquial delicious Mexican food! My family and I found this place about 7 months ago when we took a drive through Mesa on the search for authentic Mexican food. We saw a sign that said Grand Opening and decided to stop in and give them a try. So many Mexican restaurants say they are authentic but don't deliver. I am a chicken hater and never order anything chicken because I love carna asada better. However, my wife and kids ordered the chicken tacos so I decided to take a bite to try it out. I was had a craving for Pozole, I did a search and La Casa del Guajolote among other restaurants. But this restaurant had a 4.6 rating, so I chose to come here! Well now I know why it has such a great rating! There food was EXCELLENT! I was greeted immediately by Ramon. I believe he was the owner. Ramon was very helpful! He had great recommendations and explained what items that were on the menu that maybe as common in other places. We had the pozole and the Torta Guajolote asada!
