We were visiting a friend's family in Fountain Hills. He'd been raving about his favorite fish taco place, so we had to stop in. I decided to try the bruschetta (I get fish tacos at Rubio's a lot). You can choose 4 of 10 options. Loved the chicken salad and brea and apple bruschetta. The red pepper and salmon were good but the first two made me want to go back the next day. Lol. I also got refried beans and cheese. The best we'd ever had. So glad I opted for something different. Cant wait to try some other Bruschettas! read more

We have been here several times over the past few years. The food is not really Mexican, more Latin American but always delicious. The service is generally pretty good, but in keeping with the relaxed atmosphere, not intrusive. We try to eat outside when possible; it's a bit cramped inside. One of our favorites. read more

08/05/11 I went during happy hour. I had two mini-margaritas, which were good. I also has the rum soaked puerco tacos. They were very good. The serving "rack" is a nice gimmick, but I'd prefer a normal plate. The coconut flan was delicious. The service was fast and friendly from beginning to end. Upon entry to the location, I could smell something very pleasant, although I could not determine the source. It was not a food type smell and was not overpowering. I'd like to know what it is, so I can use it in my house. read more

Establishment was moderately clean and cared for. Nothing to be concerned about. Food was inexpensive for brunch and food came quick and servings were large. ...for the most part the food was thought to be lacking spices. My issue was....I ordered two items for brunch, a small taco and a nice side. Only when the food was placed on the table was I told that half my order was unavailable. Had I been informed earlier, I would have changed my order completely....even then...the Server never returned to table to see if I wanted to order a replacement item. Manager offers a couple of "free app with dinner" cards.... read more

Food was just okay. Green fresh guacamole was the best. Tacos lacked flavors and could have been tastier. Salsa was bland and had no salt either. Have definitely eaten more authentic Mexican food. Service was another issue all together and very slow and sluggish. read more

We visited Sofrita last night and and had a really great dinner. Ally the waitress was exceptional as well as the rest of the staff. Guacamole: Not for the guacamole purist but very good. There isn't much heat here but they add some textures and rough chopped tomato which are nice. Pork Tamales: Nice texture. Didn't crumble. Pork was slightly dry which I found off for a tamale. The Pork Pernil was just OKAY. The pork was cooked perfectly but it isn't hard to slow roast or braise a pork shoulder. There could have been a little more depth of flavor to the whole dish though. The side of yellow rice was perfect as were the flour tortillas. With the addition of their two side "hot sauces", it gets a little better. The guys I ate with had the tacos and both said they were amazing. Margaritas were meh. Tasted like a premade mix and not from scratch. They didn't match the level of the food by any means. Apparently they are known for their sangrias. Should have trusted Yelpers and gone that route. From where we sat, the "bartender" seemed nice but wasn't exactly enthusiastic about her job and that came though. Overall, I really liked the place and it had a lot to do with the quality of the food and friendly servers. Doesn't seem like a great place for groups but I would go back if in the area to try some more of the menu and would recommend it. read more

Before attending an evening musical fundraiser in Fountain Hills, I decided that some happy hour bites in the area were in order and this looked like the perfect spot for that. There is a pleasant patio area but since this was a cold afternoon I chose to stay inside, as did all the other patrons at that time. The staff was busy but pleasant and I was immediately seated. I ordered four mini tacos - two vegetarian and two meat tacos, all of them good ... and inexpensive, at a dollar each for happy hour. They paired nicely with a glass of Torrontes. I also ordered elote, which I enjoyed so much that I ordered another one. The restaurant has a very relaxed and casual atmosphere and is apparently quite popular; customers kept coming in while I enjoyed happy hour on that cold blustery afternoon. Now that the weather is getting milder, I look forward to another visit, and this time I'll choose the patio area. read more

Dissapointed! Please read the whole review. Service was great, lady a bit abrupt but I can deal with that, she was courteous but I am sure we annoyed her when we asked about the menu, like I said, she was fast, on point and that's important. Food, this is where they lost 2 stars from us. We are New Yorkers, which means, we grew up around good food. Good Puerto Rican food, my husband is half Puerto Rican and I cook Caribbean food often, all that to say that we honestly felt lied to, deceived when we saw their menu. I have been following Sofritapas for a while, I've been looking for any excuse to drive 45 minutes to have, what I thought, good Puerto Rican food. We walked in, where greeted by a friendly staff who took our temperature. We were seated right away, took a look around, nothing screamed out Puerto Rican, it seemed like I was in a catholic church, go use the bathroom to wash our hands and saw a shrine of the Virgin Mary, IN THE BATHROOM, I am not catholic but I assumed that having a shrine of a Saint in a bathroom is a big no no, but like I stated, what do I know. Took a quick look at the menu, asked the friendly hostess to please answer a couole.of questions we had, she was very sweet, she also mentioned they were updating a menu, and asked if we wanted to loom at the old menu, maybe it had more of the stuff we were looking for. She handed us the older menu, took a quick glance and realized that it was also not Puerto Rican at all. My husband explained to her that we were looking for PR food, she said that the owner was PR and her husband Italian, there was neither in the menu, Tacos, quesadillas, nachos, huevoa rancheros are neither Puerto Rican nor Italian. We ordered the very few thibgs that weren't Mexican, the bacalaitos were bad, really bad, it seemed that they pre-made goya bacalao kit, the tostones were pily and old, like they fried it the day before, put them on the fridge then mashed them when ordered, we ordered calamari, my 6yo mentioned that it was super chewy, which it was, not good quality at all. Overall, if a restaurants indicated they are one cuisine, but you open the menu and see veey little traces of that cuisine, run for the hills. Must add that we enjoy a good taco, we will wait in line 45 minutes for tacos in Phx, heck I drove 45 mins to have PR food, unfortunately, this was not the case. read more

Came here for paint night and drinks and it was fantastic! We had such a great time and the drinks were great. If you come here during the day, this place also has really great tamales. Would definitely recommend. It is a tad bit pricy though. Just a heads up! read more

Enjoyed the crab ceviche, which came with a lot of ceviche in a martini glass. We had to ask for more tostada chips to eat the ceviche. For dinner I ordered the tamales. You get two tamales, so I ordered one pork and one veggie. The veggie tamale was the better tasting tamale. The pork tamale was dry and smaller than the other. The veggie tamale had zucchini and corn and was larger and more moist. Very delicious. Everything on the menu looked good but I was pretty full after my two dishes. read more

Please note comment from business owner at the end of this review. My lunch at Sofrita was indeed during the Great Fair. From the outside, and even when you first walk into Sofrita, it looks like a pleasant neighborhood restaurant, but that is a disguise. Except for assigning tables and having a live waitstaff, Sofrita is a snack bar with a slightly enhanced menu. If I reviewed Sofrita as a restaurant, it would get two stars, and even as a snack bar, only three. Why? Things start out well. You are politely shown to a table, most of which are outside and have a decent view of trees, a street and the pedestrian mall. Then you are brought a faintly Latin menu, featuring six salads, three breakfast choices, a smattering of sandwiches (like a veggie wrap and a BLT), and a very small choice of beer and wine. But then you notice that the tables are so close together that the large dogs they seat (with their owners) at the next table are surely going to be eating with you too. Not good. If you want to allow dogs in your eatery, they should have a place that does not involve their begging for food at neighboring tables. (I like dogs, but not while I'm dining). And where are the restrooms? Sorry, Sofrita doesn't have any. When the food comes, you notice that you are given paper napkins -- also paper plates and cups and plastic utensils. The side "salad" to your sandwich comes in a tiny plastic cup (about one mouthful) and consists of canned corn, canned beans, and some kind of dressing. Your sandwiches are okay but nothing special, so the one chance Sofrita had to rescue itself with outstanding fare goes bye-bye. Three stars because it was a beautiful day to eat outside, and you should consider yourself lucky Sofrita. read more

The food did not have much flavor at all. Unlike most Mexican food, the chips and salsa (at least the first round) were not free & the taco entrees did not come with rice and beans. The rice also lacked flavor and beans were very runny. The food was also not very stove hot. Likely would not return. read more

I've been a few times now and just realized that I've neglected to Yelp. (Whoops) Super happy with this place. It's clean and the food us yummy. The ingredients appear fresh. The staff is always friendly. I've been for lunch a few times and had Happy Hour there last night. Food never disappoints! And the HH prices are SPECTACULAR! Parking is plentiful (street parking). Indoor and outdoor dining available. I don't believe I've used their restroom, but the restaurant is clean so I'll bet it is, too. Great for a couple or a small group. Highly recommend it! read more

Found his place while at the Fountain Hills Art Festival. They have a good selection of healthy foods. Because of the festival just outside the place was crowded and the food was slow to come. The tacos were wonderful they offer salmon and shrimp to name exceptional selections. most of the seating is outside so be notified. it would be fun to return and try the mushroom tacos. The wait staff seemed bored. read more

My new favorite place to eat. This is run by the entire family.. really nice people. everything I've ever had here has been fabulous. One suggestion - need better way to package your to-go orders. need to have cup holders / separators so soup, salsa and other liquid items will not spill. No place or business can ever be perfect. Everything about this place was yummy... Owner, waitress, the cooks in kitchen all smiled and really went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We wanted to eat all 3 meals there today, however we stated with breakfast. There is nothing that isn't made from scratch. The green salsa Verde amazing. We drove 40 miles one way to enjoy our meal. Small quaint place in downtown FH. We each had our own dish rather than the traditional Tapas style of sharing. Brussels Sprouts were the bomb along with grilled salmon. My husband had the coconut tilapia and my daughter had the shrimp tacos both looked amazing! Go you won't be disappointed. Looks like the offer sangria specials too! read more

The breeze was a bit too strong tonight, so we just had a drink outdoors and ordered our food to go. The cocktails were good, but too sweet - not unexpected. The food, however, was better than we expected. The red quinoa salad featured fresh spinach, corn kernels, Craisins, sunflower seeds, avocado, in a lovely gingered dressing that was not too tart. If you like cauliflower, Their version is absolutely delicious. It is steamed or cooked perfectly and topped with a spice mixture that perfectly compliments the flavor of the cauliflower. Some of the best I've ever had. We also highly recommend the fish and the shrimp tacos. Both had a nice coating and the quality of the seafood was very good. The tortillas were thin, flavorful, fresh , and delicious. Check it out! read more

Ally was our server, after complimenting the decorated wall of various cross hangings; she informed me they were for sale. For starters my friend Tommy and I had chips and salsa I ordered the smoked salmon tacos, not sure what he ordered (whatever it was, he seemed to enjoy it) I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting great Latin American food and excellent service. read more

We went for lunch on a Sunday in February. It was too cold to eat on the terrace, and we were glad to have had our Covid shots as the interior was very busy, with little distance between the tables. I loved the Cubano sandwich - $11.50 and my spouse raved about the BLT Avenida - $9.00. Service was friendly and we weren't in a hurry so the 15 minutes for the sandwiches to be prepared wasn't an issue. I wish that the restaurant offered an IPA beer. read more

Needed a recommendation for a place for lunch. Was sent to Sofrita. What a delightful and intimate restaurant. Loved the décor. I would characterize it as Latin Fusion influence. I asked what the best thing was on the menu and was told the shrimp tacos. So that's what I ordered. Wow! Delicious. There is an outdoor patio where you can view the large fountain as well. The Papas Verde had an addicting tang from the tomatillo salsa but were brilliantly balanced out by the chorizo and asadero cheese. The shaved brussel salad could have used a little more date and chile to balance out the vinegar but I was pleased either way. The elote was probably the only thing that fell short execution-wise as I didn't get much of the chorizo flavor, but the cook on the corn itself was perfect. The Gambas al Ajillo are absolutely a must-get. Juicy, sweet shrimp with an unexpected kick from the butter sauce and unsurprisingly great bread from Noble. The Tlayuda was a little heavy on the lettuce, but the smoked pork and bean puree combo were so flavorful that it helped balance out the richness with texture and freshness. I also loved the crispy contrast from the fried tortilla. We ended with the Concha and Mango Sticky Rice ice cream which sounded pretty simple but was quite impressive in its own right. The ice cream was a touch too frozen, but it ended up working out well with the crunchy cornflake coating and lightly warmed, pillowy concha to make a really satisfying ending to our meal. We started off with some cocktails and I was very impressed with the clear ice cube in my Smokey Old Fashioned as it was branded with the "Toro" logo. It was so smooth and probably the best Old Fashioned I ever had, so I had 3 more! My wife throughly enjoyed her Espresso Martinis also. I started off with the Grilled Octopus and nearly cried because it was so good. This is a food favorite of mine and although I love the flavors, most restaurants over cook it and you need to cut it with a steak knife. Not this dish, no knife necessary, your fork will do. So tender, so flavorful, so amazingly delicious. The Mrs. ordered the crispy calamari and was thoroughly impressed as the texture was what fresh calamari should be and not the rubbery texture you get from 8 out of 10 other places. Seasoned to perfection with spices but not overly spicy. My wife can't bear spicy anymore , but she really enjoyed it. I finished it for her of course, because she always remembers to leave room for desert and never finishes anything. And I'm glad because I always get to taste her meals too. It's a win-win for me! I then had an off-the-hook Ceviches that rivaled my own. I am also a part-time cook and also wrote a cookbook. Ceviche is a particular dish that I compare to other restaurants and until now, never found another place that compares to mine. Toro doesn't disappoint my friends. But the black beans on the plate my friend really enjoyed. And the rice on my friend's plate was not crispy and looked like it was freshly made. The environment was nice, our server was ok, she got busy as more people started to come, and the food was good enough but for what I paid for my plate ($20) I'd rather not have crispy rice. It's a nice place and I will go and try it again. Hopefully my food will be better.
